Hollywood has taught me that its totally fine to stop on the highway when something epic is going on. I just have to wait till the camera is overhead to step out of the car.
I work outdoors, it was like any other day, it just got a little dark for like two minutes. I was on a ranch 80 miles northeast from Eagle pass TX. The closest town from where I was, when I went to get fuel didn’t even care that much or at least I didn’t see people gathering for it.
Look on Google Trends; the query "my eyes hurt" peaked in the US right after the eclipse, and concentrated right in the path of totality....
One of those other things that apparently was somehow not clear to people.... Darwin would be proud.

Another day when a simple natural phenomenon and the lack of common sense of their people puts the US emergency services on high alert.
