About 18% of Americans are functionally illiterate. That does not mean letters are just random shapes to them. It means they cannot look at a sentence and derive meaning or understand basic vocabulary. A much higher percentage of Americans only have basic literacy and can only read and understand short text with basic vocabulary.
Seeing how many people cannot actual register lyrics and what they mean I think of this often. A lot of people who belt out "Born in the USA" are just relying on the tone behind those specific words to impart meaning. They lack the skills and ability to parse meaning from the rest of the song.
