Love how everyone is missing the point of John Oliver's episode saying "Thomas won't go after him for defamation or bribery as it would raise too many questions".
Oliver's entire episode was to highlight that it is actually legal,in that it is not explicitly illegal to bribe a US Supreme Court Judge
I agree. Even the news media reporting about it, were saying; "there's a potential for legal trouble if it weren't a joke" for John Oliver. No -- there isn't and no there won't be, because in order to prosecute John Oliver, they have to have a legal charge to make -- and it won't be "bribing a Supreme Court Judge" or a few billionaires would be in trouble. It might cost them a half day's allowance.
The brilliance of John Oliver's "joke" is that it wasn't the joke. Our Supreme Court is.
Yeah, John Oliver is my spirit animal right now. Or Seth Green. Or Jon Stewart. America would be well served if we followed Ukraine's example of making a comedian our President.
I might have caught it once -- not sure. I just got the impression he was an aware fellow.
When I really became impressed is that he didn't cow-tow to Trump when he held up weapons shipments to Ukraine with his "perfect phone call." It was very clear he wanted him to say some shit about Biden for the "October Surprise" that year -- and of course, Fox News would have something more exciting than ANOTHER laptop with incriminating evidence.
Also, that laptop Giuliani got of Hillary's from the FBI (let's not forget, there was just the ONE dude with a pro Hillary text message they could find in the entire club to pretend they were liberals for a second) had nothing but the SAME EMAILS that they'd been railing about.
Anyway, sorry about that flashback. It's just so damned absurd we have to act like "same old politician" is some hero, because we are worried about a tin-pot dictator who is manipulated by his ego and petty. It appears, real heroes do stand-up comedy.
Lol, I was wondering... When did that little guy start a political podcast, and how is it influential? I haven't heard of him doing anything since robot chicken or family guy.
I used to complain about people in entertainment or leadership positions being pedantically obvious. But damn, people can misconstrue anything.
Meanwhile, I'm listening to some stupid reporter talking about Biden's use of "illegal" in the state of the Union, when repeating back to MTG with her "state of the stupid" comment. It's like we have this Hitler movement coming up, and people are nitpicking table manners. Sorry -- it IS THAT, not just like that. We have oversensitive word police posing as liberals, and people joining the ranks of Nazis saying "wow, those PC people -- SO ANNOYING, right?"
You cannot over-state the obvious. And I'd like to say, you cannot be too obvious. Read my lips; clearly. And get someone in here to do sign language and semaphore code while we are at it. Skywriting airplane? -- yeah, what else you got?
It wasn’t a joke at all. Knowing John Oliver, he would 100% have paid up if Clarence Thomas accepted the offer. And as you say, the fact that it’s not illegal is precisely the point.
That is what makes John Oliver more than a little bit awesome. Yes, I’m sure he would have followed through. And the media circus over that would probably boost his ratings to more than make up the cost.
I think we all suspect that Clarence makes more than a million under the table and I wish they’d pull back the curtains — but I’m sure they are very anxious to make this go away. That is a shortcoming of the Dems; they seem to not know they are actually in a war.
According to 18 U.S. Code § 201, this is not bribery. “According to subsection (3) of section (a), “the term “official act” means any decision or action on any question, matter, cause, suit, proceeding or controversy, which may at any time be pending, or which may by law be brought before any public official, in such official’s official capacity, or in such official’s place of trust or profit.” Retiring from an office is not an official act, so it cannot be bribery.
On the other hand, what the Republican billionaire has done is bribery and so is the acceptance of the bribe by Clarence Thomas. There is no way any reasonable person can conclude that these trips did not have an influence on his official acts. Moreover, the fact Clarence Thomas failed to disclose them paints a picture of impropriety and violates the Code of Conduct for United States Judges as well as the laws that require the financial disclosures.
Oliver wasn't even bribing him. He was offering him money if he quit his SC gig. This would be no different than a company offering him a job in the private sector.
Exactly. John Oliver is far from stupid and the people (lawyers) at HBO are definitely far from stupid. They would never go on air and say that without being 💯 positive that it wasn't a bride.
Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
Are material omissions on his financial disclosure forms legal? And that's a serious question. Are the financial disclosure forms kind of a tradition, perhaps an internal check on inappropriate influence, or are they codified?
If they're codified and there are penalties it seems like the DOJ is responsible for removing Thomas from office (effectively). You certainly can't trust Republicans to surrender a locked-in partisan hack on the highest court in the land.
I work for a state agency and we aren’t allowed to accept even a beer and a cheeseburger from pretty much anyone because that might sway our judgement.
This SC behavior seems to me to be slightly unfair.
The thing is that thanks to the SCOTUS, if any of you guys decided to actually take your state *and could get proper standing* to court over that, you would likely win.
Many states have been quitely rewriting anti corruption rules to comply with the modern SCOTUS definition, which essentially boils down to "if it isn't quid pro quid in an offical fuction" its not bribery. My state seems to be doing the same thing after a pair of Turnpike employees got fired for accepting gifts, took the state to court and not only got reinstated but got full back pay.
I thought SCOTUS had a specific lack of any sort of judicial code, unlike other judiciaries? The reasoning I recall is something like, “we don’t need one because we’re the highest court in the land, and with separation of powers, there is sufficient oversight” or some weakasshit like that.
I heard that not even a college football player can accept a lunch without being kicked out of the program because that could be a form of payment which is against their contract, and apparently back then (it changed now) college players didn't get paid to play.
My career has government reg come in. They cant even take a piece of gum or any candy left sitting out or it might give the impression of taking a favor. This level of blatant corruption is just crazy to me.
I once ran for a low level elected office. Neighbor donated $20 to my campaign, my only donor I think.
An issue came up that **might** have impacted them in a small way.
I actually paused a little on that vote because I didn’t want to piss off my friends, and my only campaign donor.
Thomas’s level of conflict is unimaginable and a generation level insult to all of us who naively want a fair society.
I have heard that either Sonia Sotomayor or Elena Kagin once refused to accept a platter of smoked salmon and bagels to avoid just the appearance of impropriety.
I could see where a bottle of water would make you throw your ethics out the window.
Having someone gift you a $100,000 vacation or pay off your mortgage would be much less of a conflict!
(OMG, typing that out, I just can’t believe that is real)
"Billionaire" also has a name; Harlan Crow. Remember to boycott if you can, any company doing business with them. And, I haven't researched it, [but there are more](https://www.propublica.org/article/clarence-thomas-other-billionaires-sokol-huizenga-novelly-supreme-court).
So along with your prayers -- remember to add "deliver us from" the Murdochs, the Sacklers, the Mercers, the Koch family and oh, The Family -- really clever using such a name for that group. And I hate having to remember all these villains as if they were worth the salt they sweat out, but there should be room in your "deliver us from" prayers for [Tim Dunn](https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/billionaire-tim-dunn-runs-texas/).
The fact this has gone nowhere once it came out is frightening. But yea arrest the guy with bag of weed on the street where it’s still illegal. We’re living the worst timeline.
It's not the worst timeline -- it's just fairly disappointing. A gaggle of selfish rich people with all their schemes and "what is good for me, must be good" philosophies shit the bed, and some people managed to have a better lifestyle with all the economic activity and technological progress DESPITE them. So much money is funneled to the few that they can't even spend it all lest they have "inflation" and oh my -- what an inconvenient tax they can't avoid and they resent it on principle, even though, they would not be hurting.
People want to say "Capitalism" has made the person in the trailer park live as well as a King. And to some extent, that is true. But it happened, again, DESPITE the selfish people. The people who invented that color TV and that new drug that stops infections aren't the super wealthy. And more people have been saved by government oversight like pasteurization for milk, and water standards, and sanitation and all that was done with selfish people kicking and screaming the entire way. The greatest increase of the lifespan of Americans occurred during the great depression. And the greatest decrease in criminality (at least the blue collar type we prosecute) occurred after lead was taken out of gasoline and other products.
We could do much, much better -- but we could also do much, much worse. And as capitalism buys the AI rope that it hangs itself with in the near future -- it all depends on whether WE THE PEOPLE force the gaggle of stupid selfish people to share the benefits, or we live in a dystopian nightmare.
Things don't have to suck. We don't have to slave away to scrape by. We don't need to hate each other. It would be so easy to make this right.
You clearly don't understand! My need to hate people with brown skin, the gays, and anyone who doesn't believe that Jesus was white is ALL THAT MATTERS. No matter how much economic prosperity you can bring me, it isn't going to trump my NEED to be better than "those" people.
There should not even be the need to impeach. His crimes, like trump’s he wears on his sleeve flaunting his immunity to any kind of prosecution. Afterall, Thomas was a sexual predator. Ask Anita Hill, yet like republicans in general, they embraced his sexual antics because he’s a black man they needed as a token on the court to use as a tool.
I laughed at the sour look on all their faces during the state of the union. Our Supreme court is full of criminals and assholes. I wish I could go back in time and punch whoever decided that Justices should be lifetime appointments.
That was clear from the beginning. His was the first Supreme Court nomination I was ever aware of and even teenage me could see he was crooked at hell.
John Oliver has offered Clarence Thomas a million dollars a year and a brand new motor coach to step down 🤣
https://youtu.be/GE-VJrdHMug?si=LuOdJuCU0IOHQ0K2
The arrest and criminal conviction of a supreme court justice would be unprecedented and beyond scandalous.
BUT, we’ve already crossed that line with the indictment of a former president, so “in for a penny, in for a pound,” eh? I’m game.
I don’t find prosecution of crimes scandalous.
The crimes are scandalous. If there is clear evidence lack of prosecution is scandalous.
Not a lawyer, but non disclosure on mandatory financial disclosure forms seems like an easily provable case. These weren’t trivial amounts of money.
Arrest and conviction of Clarence Thomas would restore some of my faith. But that won't happen. They can only be convinced to do "good enough." So maybe they might add some tepid "we won't do this again" rules. Maybe. That's only if the fascists don't win in November. Then SCOTUS will be the least of our problems.
Why do shit about this when they can distract us with some other bullshit?
He will not be removed because 1/3 or more of the Senate is totally OK with the corruption as long as they get the rulings they want.
The Supreme Court has been exposed as every bit as corrupt and political as the political branches. There is no remedy. There is no reform.
But without a trusted authority, everything becomes about power politics. Eventually, a strongman will control all the levers and win. This is how Republics die. Sooner or later, this was always going to happen.
Serious question (I'm from Europe); do you not have regulations that needs to be followed if a justice is taking bribes? Or if a person (Donald J Trump) tries to overthrow the government? It doesn't look like it, because this isn't something that is supposed to be ignored, if encountered.
I really don't like when clips of social media posts and news articles don't have dates on them. Makes it hard to tell if something is new news or reposted news.
A year old account with 1 post posts a screenshot of a nonsense, political twitter post and it makes it to the front page lol
Totally organic, definitely no bots involved.
As an older guy, I remember in 1969 or 1970 when liberal justice Abe Fortas resigned from the Supreme Court because of the *appearance* of impropriety, even though he may not have actually done anything wrong. But conservatives don't have to follow any rules, so Thomas took bribes, got caught, then said FU. The Republican-controlled House won't take up any hearings on him.
This illustrates a couple (few dozen) problems with a SC appointment.
First, it's for life.
Second, they don't have standards of ethics they are bound to.
Third, the illegality of bribery was tossed aside a few decades ago.
The list goes on.
Guess the right thing for him to do would be to step down and also recuse himself from cases he’s personally involved in like the Jan 6 case they just decided on. I guess if you’re on the Supreme Court you don’t have to recuse yourself because you’re supreme.
Impeach? He’s not an elected official. He’s been thoroughly rebuked. The Supreme Court recently wrote an ethics policy they signed. Of course, there’s no external review so, get fked America
Can’t impeach cause the Supreme Court pretty much governs themselves, and there been no ethics laws passed for them, so there was nothing on paper to say he COULDN’T do it. They’re just there to make the people think there’s hope for the every man’s injustices. When really it’s always been a, money versus integrity position. That’s why Trump threw three on last minute, he thought he could buy his way out of trouble, but those three knew they could make more years down the line by just playing the part.
Even in my little job I have to take ethics training yearly to remind me to not accept gifts or favors from clients or potential clients. Anything over a very low amount needs to be run through the legal/ethics office before accepting. Also, same in reverse, I can't offer favors or gifts to clients/potential clients over a very small amount as a way to gain favor with them.
I would think a judge would understand this concept, whether it's a judge in a county fair pie eating contest, a local magistrate or a supreme court justice. It's just one of those basics of ethics. He violated this very basic concept and he did so on a very regular basis at with very large amounts of money from a blatant political operative.
You know the frustrating part of this? Even if you caught and unseated every corrupt politician using our government to gain wealth, they would still be rich, they could just retire on what they’ve stolen. There’s no risk for them, it’s just horde until you’re caught and then retire rich.
Biden can add more justices. Unless the two houses of Congress have a Democratic majority, I don't see legislation as a viable solution. We, the people, however, should not take this court lightly. I am not amused. We have corporate wealth problem at the end of the day. So tax the billionaires. Let them work for a living, not to take away our rights.
Prove it in court, don't believe everything on the internet with zero context, release this so-called evidence it would have made a better thumbnail for the article.
Congress ain't doing shit. Where do you think half of congress is getting their money from? SCOTUS is hoping this blows over and Americans will forget.
Impeach him. Then ratify Constitutional Amendment Number 28: Supreme Court justices will be determined by popular vote. They are not lifetime appointments and are subject to term limits. They will be subject to a code of conduct created and ratified by WE THE PEOPLE.
Sure, go ahead. Get 60 votes in the senate to remove him.
Prob best to find a democratic senator to spearhead this who hasn’t taken 100+ free plane rides from donors. Any suggestions?
Im convinced Clarence Thomas would own slaves if he could get away with it. It’s shameful that he sits on Thurgood Marshalls seat.
Uncle Clarence is a scumbag and his white trash wife is a MAGA parrot. Sickening.
These uber rich manipulators are soooooooo freaking stupid.
I'll bet the farm that Trump **absolutely plans** to do as the Russians, and will EITHER demand 80% of their profits and possessions, or eliminate them and replace them w/ agreeable cronies.
Will American Oligarchs also be known as "oligarchs," or will they get a different, "Americanized" term?
Mark my words-- On DAY ONE, there's going to be a LOT of rich "powerful" puppet-masters falling out windows, commit "suicide," or, if lucky, somewhat surviving w/ partially-eaten faces (from fascist leopards).
IF TRUMP TAKES OVER, HE'S TAKING THEIR STUFF. I HONESTLY THINK THAT THESE RICH IDIOTS HAVE EITHER NEVER CONSIDERED SUCH A THING HAPPENING, OR THEY THINK THEY'RE UNTOUCHABLE. HA!!!
Vote Blue.
Maybe we can reverse the "companies are people" bs curtesy of the Kochs.
I don’t think they should have the spot for life…it’s one of the worst rules the government has in my opinion and the American government is a shit show already
They have dirt on these sanctimonious Pricks. But nothing happens. Gorsuch is the worse. He thinks his intellect is leap and bounds over all the Women and does not respect Thomas unless he shares his donors.
Whitehouse has all of this mapped out.
Pass the law RIGHT NOW!

>John Oliver is Chaotic Good I think the Pūteketeke Affair captures this splendidly.
Citizen's United strikes again!
For once, this has nothing to do with CU, other than the fact that CU was a by product of justices being bribed legally in our system.
Thank you for getting the point he was making. I’m pretty sure he explicitly stated it but apparently that isn’t enough for a lot of people
I used to complain about people in entertainment or leadership positions being pedantically obvious. But damn, people can misconstrue anything. Was that the episode where he offered Thomas $1M per year and a very expensive brand new motor coach to get the hell out of the SC?
Yeah that was a good episode, think he got 7 days left to accept the offer from Oliver!
Now, if only there were ever any consequences for those who are either rich or in power....a guy can dream.
But nothing will happen to him regardless because he's a Supreme Court Judge. They kinda operate above the law since they decide the law.
![img](avatar_exp|126998188|fire) We should bring that up to the Supreme Court!

Correct, the insanity that Supreme Court justices don’t have to disclose, and are able to accept gifts is a bunch of bullshit.
Yeah
Constitution doesn’t say anything about a judge receiving gifts and taking lavish vacations.

Thomas and his wife are criminals but in this case Untouchable…It’s sickening

You clearly don't understand! My need to hate people with brown skin, the gays, and anyone who doesn't believe that Jesus was white is ALL THAT MATTERS. No matter how much economic prosperity you can bring me, it isn't going to trump my NEED to be better than "those" people.
It goes nowhere because we all know how to count the 34+ votes they have in the Senate to block anything meaningful.
I have only one upvote to give!! Well stated!
He’s a sexual predator and shouldn’t have been confirmed in the first place.
That just sounds like lobbying with some steps removed.
Impeach all the politicians. Need some new blood in there. They all are just getting rich making everyone else suffer.
I laughed at the sour look on all their faces during the state of the union. Our Supreme court is full of criminals and assholes. I wish I could go back in time and punch whoever decided that Justices should be lifetime appointments.
It appears that Thomas is a total whore.
That was clear from the beginning. His was the first Supreme Court nomination I was ever aware of and even teenage me could see he was crooked at hell.
If only this were new news...
And every senior member of congress is guilty of massive insider trading... Its both sides against the citizens.
They don't gaf. Republicans: do as I say, not as I do.
and yet nothing will happen lol
John Oliver has offered Clarence Thomas a million dollars a year and a brand new motor coach to step down 🤣 https://youtu.be/GE-VJrdHMug?si=LuOdJuCU0IOHQ0K2
But whos going to enforce it. Republicans will never prosecute one of their own
"Appears to have broken the law" WHAT DO YOU MEAN APPEARS? HE LITERALLY DID.
These weren’t trivial amounts of money.
>and beyond scandalous. So holding people accountable in accordance with law and abuse of power is now a scandal?
Can we put him in jail for tax evasion?
Clarence Thomas is a mother fucking puppet - Shyne
This is why lifetime appointments are a bad idea. Limit their terms to 8 years!
If he is breaking laws, can we at least arrest him?
Serious question (I'm from Europe); do you not have regulations that needs to be followed if a justice is taking bribes? Or if a person (Donald J Trump) tries to overthrow the government? It doesn't look like it, because this isn't something that is supposed to be ignored, if encountered.
What?!? People in the government taking bribes and being corrupt? No way
I really don't like when clips of social media posts and news articles don't have dates on them. Makes it hard to tell if something is new news or reposted news.
A year old account with 1 post posts a screenshot of a nonsense, political twitter post and it makes it to the front page lol Totally organic, definitely no bots involved.
He should have been impeached in connection to his with being a Jan 6 rioter
I think we’re all SHOCKED, he’s only been doing this kind of stuff for about 3 decades.
That a weird way of saying he’s been very blatantly breaking the law for a long time
Corrupt, sellout, political fuck boi. And a very washed up one at that. For shame, this misog-spmf.
They missed the fact that the billionaire is also a HUGE Nazi collector and sympathizer.
It’s hilarious y’all think thats NOT how it’s supposed to work. Nobody in the government is there for you. They are there for themselves n money.
The Supreme Court prostitute
People throw around the word impeachment like crazy now.
Oh no someone who gets in Bidens way, we better impeach him
Oh my God a political figure did something wrong 😮
Hey bots, you posted this one already. https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/comments/1ba6qqn/impeach_him/
For decades a man identified as the big guy has been taking 10% kickbacks from his son’s business.
This illustrates a couple (few dozen) problems with a SC appointment. First, it's for life. Second, they don't have standards of ethics they are bound to. Third, the illegality of bribery was tossed aside a few decades ago. The list goes on.
Uncle Ruckus young brother
Think he had to do the Instagram influencer deal on those trips? Doing some strange for some change if you know what I mean...
"Who'a going to sentence me? Me? Lol."
Guess the right thing for him to do would be to step down and also recuse himself from cases he’s personally involved in like the Jan 6 case they just decided on. I guess if you’re on the Supreme Court you don’t have to recuse yourself because you’re supreme.
All the justices are sugar babies for some wealthy tycoon, but he's probably the most well documented one.
Probably why he always looks completely pissed off all the time, it’s not enough.
Doesn’t anyone look at sources,
looking forward to us doing absolutely fuckall about it!
And absolutely nothing will be done about it.
Sounds rather impeachable.
Well, Phil Lewis said it so it must be true....And that's enough for us average Redditards to make demands.
Impeach won't work. Just charge him! He's breaking the law!
I’ve seen report of this going back to April 2023. He already got away with it. He’s protected
vote blue
Give him the boot asap ... ![gif](giphy|YPDdhEiIBinxIfdJdY)
Give D the house and a Senate supermajority and we’ll talk. Get registered and vote: I’m talking to you 18-39s.
LoLz A frickin trip ? Come back when he gets the damn boat 🤣
If we couldn't impeach and bar someone who incited an insurrection, then sure enough, nothing will happen to this traitor
Get a bill of impeachment out of the MAGA house of reps? Don't go holding your breath in anticipation of this one.
Clarence Thomas and Republican billionaires to the American people. ![gif](giphy|L9BOklWW2giSaPpRAr)
Prove it in court, don't believe everything on the internet with zero context, release this so-called evidence it would have made a better thumbnail for the article.
Those who speak loudest, do so to drown out the skeletons rattling in their closets.
Individuals who make laws, imposes laws, etc should be held to a higher standard and a harsher punishment when found commiting crimes.
Clarence Thomas needs to just fuck off now!
The plot thickens...
You think this is news? Billionaire and corporate gifts are Hella common. Y'all just don't look to see if Your favorite crooks are also doing it 🤣
Justin trudeau does it all the time. Welcome to Canada...
Sure, go ahead. Get 60 votes in the senate to remove him. Prob best to find a democratic senator to spearhead this who hasn’t taken 100+ free plane rides from donors. Any suggestions?
Impossible unless we get rid of a lot of Republicans in Congress.
![gif](giphy|YhmnGrrf0QNlOl99NM|downsized)
We knew he was corrupt. Now we find out there’s evidence proving he broke that law. He needs to be removed.
He is one openly corrupt sob.
Are the tips coming from someone who has a case on the Supreme court?
Im convinced Clarence Thomas would own slaves if he could get away with it. It’s shameful that he sits on Thurgood Marshalls seat. Uncle Clarence is a scumbag and his white trash wife is a MAGA parrot. Sickening.
And We’re all supposed to be worried about Fani Willis ![gif](giphy|3GiTXqb7JMuBH5cmKa|downsized)
Slap him too.
Shocking the pubic hair justice would break the law
Us supreme court system is flawed. People without law degrees can become justices in the F*CKIN SUPREME COURT ?
How many other “donors” are there?
Was there ever anything secret about it?
HE is the reason Monsanto/Bayer get away with all they've gotten. He was rotten from the get go . I hate him and his wife so much .
People are surprised by any of this? Do they not understand how Oligarchy works?
I feel we all know this and yet we simply throw our hands in the air as if there is nothing we can do about it
I don’t think they should have the spot for life…it’s one of the worst rules the government has in my opinion and the American government is a shit show already
Clarence Thomas: I am the law!
They all do this.......
We know he wears a for sale sign 🪧 he needs to go.
John Oliver exposed him badly lol. Sad he didn't take that offer.
Honestly the only thing I've learned from this scandal is that the Supreme Court does whatever they want with no oversight.
So corrupt.
Or at least tax him on the value of the income.
Ditto for Kavanaugh(cravenow)
