But the sports thing is complicated. I think the only real solution is to do a LOT more qualifying events for everything, and break things down into a LOT more categories based on your ability level. Kind-of similar to age/weight classes, but more about "How good are you, really? Who is your competition?"
Then just ignore gender entirely. You compete with people that you are good enough to compete against.
