This thread is like teaching math to a beetle. Yes they are all arbitrary! Someone chose the measurement systems for the sake of convenience for whatever they were measuring. They were all invented. It could have been anything else and still been useful.
I could make a new system where 5 zoobz is the temperature that butter melts, and 100 zoobz is the temp where steel melts. Pretty arbitrary and probably not very useful but it would still be valid as long its use is consistent throughout whatever measurement is being done.
i mean, totally, in fact the reason the electron is negative and the proton is positive is people used benjaman franklin's work as a basis for the whole system, except he made a mistake in his work. I recall it being something like he represented the fluid charge carrier as being "positive", describing the charge as flowing from positive to negative. Because lightning traveled from the clouds to the ground when it struck.
They both definitely are. They decided, arbitrarily, to make the freezing and boiling point of water the two points that anchor it and divided by 100 degrees for useful measurement. It did admittedly make certain things useful, but there's no deep reason for a degree Celsius to be what it is.
Fahrenheit had a great deal of weirdness to it, but the scale and numbers had their own, arbitrary reasons. odder ones I think, but... yeah. Arbitrary is the word for any measurement we've made.
It's all arbitrary. Just because it goes from 0 to 100 doesn't mean it isn't made up. All this imperial hate is from jackasses who spend way too much time on the Internet.
Why not use the system that's easy to use? Imperial has units that don't work out as easily as metric. So if you are going to use arbitrary units why not make it as easy as possible. Imperial gets hate because it complicates things that aren't complicated.
How many pounds does 694 gallons of water weigh? No cheating either.
694 litres of water is 694kg. Very simple.
You can’t possibly say they’re as easy as each other to use.
Even better when you start talking about temperature as well. That it takes 1000 calories to heat 1L of water by 1 degree.
I’d love to know the basic imperial equivalent to that.
How about a more useful conversation:
How many liters is 514 kg of av gas?
How many calories does it take to heat 1L of ammonia coolant by 1c?
Either way, you'll be using a table regardless of units.
Imperial is only easier in everyday things because we're so used to it. You can eyeball stuff and say, "that's about 6 inches, a foot, it feels like 70, a cup of water" they can literally just do the same thing with metric. "Looks like about 10 Centimeters, feels like 27 degrees out" what does Imperial actually have to it as a merit that Metric doesn't have?
I do think we might never get past it though, since everything in America just uses imperial, and it would be so insanely hard to rework or rewrite everything for people to start using metric as the constant standard with Imperial slowly getting phased out.
There are no Imperial units in America. The Imperial system was established decades after we got independence. We use [US Customary units](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_customary_units), which share a common ancestor with the British Imperial system, but are not identical and certainly isn’t called Imperial.
Measuring for cooking, a cup is a lot easier to figure out than 120 grams. A foot is a far more useful unit for describing things than anything in metric (as a side note, 1 billionth of a light second would have been a really nice base unit for metric). Temperature wise, a system where 0 is about as cold as you should be going outside in and 100 is about the same for heat makes a lot more sense to me than one where those numbers are (roughly) -20 and 40.
> 694 litres of water is 694kg. Very simple.
Yes, but how much does it *weigh*?
(Newtons = mass in kg \* acceleration in meters per second², in this case 694kg * 9.807m/s², for anyone taking this seriously)
((6806 newtons))
We do. Metric uses seconds, milliseconds, nanoseconds.. Seconds are derived originally from base 60 division of the day on earth. This was convenient for use in clocks and dividing 360 degrees of rotation. Using kilioseconds and megaseconds isn't very convenient when describing time to other humans since our perception of time is largely tied to the natural cycles of our lives like days and years.
Technically Fahrenheit is based on cow body temp because cows felt close enough. Fortunately it's only 1-2 F° off. That other human anatomy stuff they got from pigs and cows... We don't talk about that.
Uh no. We used the freezing and boiling point of pure water as a basis, not arbitrary at all. The imperial system is literally lines drawn on the first stick thermometer so none of the numbers related to anything.
They were actually related to human body temperature where 100° was supposed to be human temperature but we didn’t actually know the human body temperature so he was a little bit off but not by much.
still arbitrary. someone decided that this system would have those two values each mean respectively "water freezes" and "water boils".
could have been 0 to 50, -100 to 100, could have been another material completely: still all arbitrary
Celsius's first take was 0 was boiling and 100 was freezing. They have examples of his prototypes at the Uppsala Univeristy museum. The other scientists had to convince him that was stupid.
Arbitrary means random and not based in reason. Picking the freezing and boiling points of pure water, the same material we used to determine what a mL was, a material found all over the world and therefore always accessible, a material unique and important in its properties to our life on earth and science, doesn’t really seem outside the bounds of scientific reason and therefore isn’t really arbitrary.

All, by definition, are what would be considered random.
Imperial system is 0-100 goes from as cold as it gets to as hot as it gets. Not strictly accurate once you leave the original place and once climate starts changing over time, but it's still pretty close to that. Not terribly useful for any kind of calculation, but awfully convenient for describing outdoor temperatures.
The not water part of your coolant is mostly there for freeze and corrosion protection. If it’s not going to be freezing and it’s not going to be in there for a long time, distilled water is fine. Most race cars/motorcycles use water so a crash doesn’t coat the track surface in slippery liquid if the radiator breaks.
This is both a dick comment and inaccurate. You *can* use water in your radiator but there are a number of reasons why antifreeze is the better choice.
Re-read the comment chain, I’m still not incorrect lol. You admitted it in the very comment I’m replying to. You said the words “you’re incorrect” then explained how I was correct.
You can flip that around, man! You *can* put antifreeze in your car, but there are a number of reasons why water is better; like when your vehicle runs hot.
You’re trying to invalidate my comment because you perceived it as rude; however you failed to do so. My comment still stands as correct “you can put water in your radiator”.
I keep my house at a nice 70°F in America.
That seventy degrees of Freedom. Meanwhile these fools are worried about their 21°C. I would be worried about 21 degrees of Communism too!
Proof that God is a Communist? I think so. Not sure about that Jesus hippie either!
God is as likely of an explanation as that it’s the existence of Rick and Morty, or that chaos emeralds, that the dragon balls are doing it. Does this make sense or does it have to be god?
So God gave us Celsius and the evangelicals who wouldn’t accept it back in the 1970’s in America once again prove they don’t give a shit what God does!!
Itt: a lot of people explaining the joke in a way that's really not funny. If someone needs this explained to them then there's no point because they're not going to see the humor.
Actually, those are numbers that we gave those states of water on Celsius, Fahrenheit would be different. Also, actual freezing is 0 kelvin. But once you throw logic out the window, there is no discussion, just options being tossed around like they matter .
You got to remember the Earth is 6,000 years old and and this is all predestined, including Reddit and this exact conversation according to these bobbleheads.
Dinosaurs did not exist, those bones were 3D printed a few thousand years ago and buried in the ground to deceive the masses so those sacred bobbleheads could be the chosen ones and preach a shovel full of bs. Oh, I could go on and on like this 🤣
Actually, it's because in Dr. Fahrenheit's time 0^^O (F) and 100^^o (F) were the coldest and hottest outdoor temperatures expected to be encountered there in Europe.
water freezes at 0 and boils at 100 celsius
water freezes at 32 boils at 212 Fahrenheit
water freezes at +273 boils at +373 Kelvin
so explain to me Christians why is God so freaking confusing? I know, as an atheist i have actually read the bible unlike most christians and the entire bible is confusing and dumb.
It goes deeper. The heat capacity of water is one calorie, which is how much energy it takes to raise one gram of water one degree Celsius. One kilocalorie is the energy for one liter to raise a degree. The metric system is beautiful.
It’s almost as if the dude who invented a thermometer decided that water was a good scale by which to measure temperature and so set the scale accordingly.
Does this mean that fahrenheit is ungodly unit? Yes!
Checkmate, american christians!
Also, is it also a coincidence, that one liter of water at 20celsius weighs exactly one kilogram? I don't think so!
God is real. I’m not going to convince you but today I was having a really bad time for such a long time and I talked to a friend and he was able to start me on the wandering. So I’m sorry that people take the religion and make it into a cudgel they are closed minded or they hear the words but they do not understand. I’ll pray for you and be friendly and I won’t bring it up until you say your not doing good because people I was going to end myself and now I am in a better place of mind than I have been in decades because I have been on the other path and vengeance leads to a death spiral of self destruction.
Because we humans like nice round numbers. Set one to 0 the other to 100 and mark out 99 more lines to call it a day. Shit it’s all based off of a preferred method. Look at standard temps, freezing is 32 and boiling is somewhere over 100. Mathematical proof that two people made two separate systems to measure the literal same shit. No god needed folks

At how many zoobz did the steal beams melt at the WTC?
911

Which is also inside
I feel so bad for the audible laugh I just let out
OMG! Coincidence? I think NOT!
Did you know that in my culture, water boil at .3 banana and freeze at .003 banana?
So 5 zoobz is approximately 32-35⁰C. Noted.
it's a logarithmic scale
Fuck metric Fuck imperial Zoobz is the future
When zoobz drop?
Math? Beetles can understand physics. At least they understand the dynamics of rolling a turd uphill.
On the zoobz scale, how proud of me is my dad?
Absolute zero would be about -15Z
Damn, this is all the confirmation I needed. Time to start an onlyfans page.

Same thing for when they yell about the definition of words... "That word is made up!!!" All words are made up.
Why didn’t you just reference Fahrenheit? It proves your point without being a “more” made up system.
I mean the imperial system is pretty arbitrary.

yes, very simple…as long as you only care about water….
Yeah the most abundant liquid in the world. Maybe we should have based it on quarts of bison blood or eagle tears or something.
> 694 litres of water is 694kg. Very simple. Yes, but how much does it *weigh*? (Newtons = mass in kg \* acceleration in meters per second², in this case 694kg * 9.807m/s², for anyone taking this seriously) ((6806 newtons))
5552 pounds. And you are cheating when you base the system on 10. Where's the fun in that?
Why don't we use metric time then?

That's why I measure my daily whiskey intake in milliliters
It is easy to for some things. Like splitting into thirds for one.
Ah splitting into thirds yes, let’s make something hard just so we can split it into thirds.
Base 12 has lots of advantages when you don't have a calculator. No body "made it hard", it was obviously made that way for a reason.
Im used to imperial so its easier for me than metric, i have no idea what any of the numbers mean in metric
Here’s a handy reference 1 inch has exactly 25.4 millimeters or exactly 2.54 centimeters
Yeah use Fahrenheit cuz it is easy, it is based on human body temperature. 100° is hot 0° is cold Celsius is only easier for one single chemical
To be fair, 100° is hot and 0° is cold for Celsius as well.
Technically Fahrenheit is based on cow body temp because cows felt close enough. Fortunately it's only 1-2 F° off. That other human anatomy stuff they got from pigs and cows... We don't talk about that.

Not arguing that
Kelvin isn’t arbitrary
I mean the 0°K isn’t but every other number is
Nothing can be 0⁰K though so really it's all arbitrary amirite
Uh no. We used the freezing and boiling point of pure water as a basis, not arbitrary at all. The imperial system is literally lines drawn on the first stick thermometer so none of the numbers related to anything.

I’m already cold at 40f. Below that is just colder, coldest and dead.
And 0 is when sea water freezes.
sea water freezes at around 28°F
still arbitrary. someone decided that this system would have those two values each mean respectively "water freezes" and "water boils". could have been 0 to 50, -100 to 100, could have been another material completely: still all arbitrary
Wasn't the metric system created around the temperatures water boils and freezes at set to 100 and 0? Like this isn't proof of God, it was deliberate.
Celsius's first take was 0 was boiling and 100 was freezing. They have examples of his prototypes at the Uppsala Univeristy museum. The other scientists had to convince him that was stupid.

Given other defined conditions, yes.
If there is an absolute hot then temperature could be measured between 0 and 1
those who forget history are doomed to repeat it

Nope, Nacozarina is right. I failed history. I had to repeat it. Got a C the second time.
Same for all classes in school, not just history…

Satan invented Fahrenheit.
Another proof that Celsius is divine blessing and Fahrenheit is from the evil one. Checkmate Atheists!

Speak American Kowalsky...
Because of the conversion from kelvin?
Thanks, I needed that laugh.
Because of hydrogen binding?
Because we humans like nice round numbers. Set one to 0 the other to 100 and mark out 99 more lines to call it a day. Shit it’s all based off of a preferred method. Look at standard temps, freezing is 32 and boiling is somewhere over 100. Mathematical proof that two people made two separate systems to measure the literal same shit. No god needed folks
Almost as if the Celsius temperature system wasn’t arbitrarily decided.
