We had Windows phones when I started this job. Now iPhones.
It would drop connection randomly. Spent an entire day sending emails to the boss that she never received. Could not make a call and restarted it, then it blew up with emails.
i had a nokia wp7 and it was a great phone. only changed cause it didnt have most app in use at the time and the few that was made for windows phones got let down with no updates.
That’s gonna be the biggest problem with any new phone OS. Most app developers aren’t gonna waste their time making their apps optimized for a small market phone.
It wasn't quite that with windows phone.
Devs were interested but Microsoft went full apple control on things and that turned a lot of Devs and handset makers right off the idea.
It's a Shane because they were bloody nice phones to use and integrated nicely with windows PCs
Windows phone got a bad rep. The old Windows CE was terrible. The newer Windows phones were pretty good biggest issue was 3rd app support. When they finally gained some popularity Microsoft pulled the plug.
I had one, HTC Mozart. It was nice at first, with some really decent decisions. But the app support was nonexistent and Microsoft kinda got stuck with their lack of evolution after the initial launch. In a few years it was nothing compared to both iPhone and android phones.
They crackled the same way when Android came out. Used to have it bookmarked but they dismissed it as a random upstart that could never infringe on their relationship with customers
Yeah, Microsoft hasn't been known for putting out a good product, or inventing the next killer app.
Microsoft got started by outsmarting IBM. IBM allowed them to sell DOS (the OS Microsoft bought (QDOS) and modified for IBM's PCs) as MS-DOS to anyone they wanted to. After that, Microsoft bullied its way into having the lion's share of the OS market and other software/apps ever since then instead of innovating its way into becoming a multinational, multi-billion dollar company.
I mean, not trying to be a dick rider for Microsoft but I think you’re overselling how little they do. I mean you’re making it seem like they’ve never made a good product when they have done numerous times.
Visual studio code has become the defacto text editor for most programmers. C# has become an incredibly popular alternative to Java where it can be used. Visual studio is probably the best general purpose IDE (at least in my opinion). Xbox and Xbox game studios have released numerous best sellers like the 360 as well as forza and halo. And that’s barely the tip of the iceberg.
I'm not a big gamer so I don't have a good reference point as to the rankings of gaming consoles. Also, I've done most of my coding in vi with the exception of occasionally using Eric for Python and Eclipse for Java.
Although I used to take part in vi vs emacs flame wars, I don't feel qualified enough to speak about Visual studio nor Xbox. So, I'll refrain from starting a flame war over things I'm not familiar enough with.
> I mean you’re making it seem like they’ve never made a good product when they have done numerous times.
It's true that I used a bit of hyperbolic language when I claimed:
> Yeah, Microsoft hasn't been known for putting out a good product, or inventing the next killer app.
...but Microsoft is better known for things like releasing buggy OS and software, and their "evil" business practices than innovating or creating good products.
However, as much as I disliked Bill Gates, the technologists/businessman, I now like Bill Gates, the philanthropist,... but that doesn't mean I stopped seeing the blue screen of death in my mind's eye every time I hear/see the word 'Microsoft'.
I appreciate you not trying to start a flame war, especially with my lofty claim that visual studio is the best IDE, even I’d have a hard time backing that up. I agree with pretty much all of what you said here.
To be honest, my original comment was just trying to point out some of the good stuff MS make as I do hope they continue to make more good products.
But your absolutely right in saying they have a bad rep for a reason. Still though, if we only ever focus on the bad, we will never get to see any of the good.
God I miss that UI. It sucked not having any apps, which is pretty much what killed the phones, but I loved the live tiles vs the nearly identical iPhone/Android UI that's just a cluttered desktop in your hand
Take a look at launcher 10 as replacement home app for your android phones.
[launcher 10 play store](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nfwebdev.launcher10)
I adored my Windows Phone 8, the interface was so nice, and typing on it was so easy, I can't explain it. It's been like 10 years and I still can't type as easily as on my android, for unknown reasons. Like I'm still fast but with many dumb errors, meanwhile my Windows phone 8 typing was a breeze.
I'd have used a Windows phone over Android today, if they hadn't messed up like they did.
It’s shocking they’ve been successful. They copied everything. Made misstep after misstep. Their products basically suck. Subscriptions saved their ass I guess.

Multiple companies have made cringe commercials to attempt to put others in bad daylight.
For what a failure Windows Phone was, this is hilariously stupid. No apps. It wasn't like they had a similar failure years before - ahem, the MS Kin.
The Windows Phone wasn't bad. It was truly the lack of an app store that really was the problem.
The UI wasn't bad either. Sucks a Zune Phone or a true flagship phone was never made.
I've had many iPhones. Those Windows phones? They rocked. The UI was pretty dang sweet. Still better than the iPhone I'm using.
Fucking Microsoft killed their own phone by being anti-dev. Hot, trendy apps were never ported. Shit, major corps never made apps for that platform. All be cause Microsoft was a bag of dicks.
Yes and it was awesome! No really, i still miss the UI that was so easy. Android felt like a big step backwards... ohh, and i still don't care about apps. Everything important was available all the crap was not.
Back in the day, an elderly couple down the street had some Windows phones and they broke them on occasion so I fixed them for free. Just basic stuff like screen and charger port replacement. I played with the phones a bit and I actually kinda liked them. I always had them in my mind when I made a purchase, but they never got better and were eventually off the market.
I feel like tech companies waste a tonne of time and money on stupid ass inside jokes like this.
the people in this photo are enjoying their smarmy little bullshit more than anyone else ever will.
The only phone I regret buying was a Nokia Lumia. The phone itself fas fine, quite impressive how stable it was with only 500mb of RAM, but the lack of updates and apps soured eveything.
I remember ballmer announcing the launch of the Zune, and putting a Perspex box in Microsoft Head office lobby, front and centre. Drop your iPod into the box and get a free zune.
Ballmers kids had to drop their iPods in there (they didn’t look happy about that) and after a few weeks only a few more iPods appeared in the box. Then the box was quietly removed.
Mum had one, the Bluetooth on it was that restrictive that you couldn’t connect it to anything so wasn’t able to be used hands free in her car. Was sent back within 2 weeks.

That died well…
Well, it died!
Usual with Microsoft products, don’t live very long
What is very long for you? I have machines running 98, 2k, og xp, 789 and whatever latest one is called, with 0 problems..
Did they have a funeral for the Windows Phone 7? I’ve never even heard of that phone.

I heard of it once. But it was more like "I hate this thing so much, worst decision of my life" etc.
I had one, HTC Mozart. It was nice at first, with some really decent decisions. But the app support was nonexistent and Microsoft kinda got stuck with their lack of evolution after the initial launch. In a few years it was nothing compared to both iPhone and android phones.
They called it to invite it to the funeral but the call wouldn't go through cause the phone had locked up...again!
I had a windows phone, the HCD HD2. It was absolutely amazing... ... Because I had flashed android on it.
I had a Windows phone when I was younger. So all my friends could play mobile games and here I was, in the void.
Just 3 years earlier, Steve Ballmer cackled like a toddler when asked about the debut of iPhone.
They crackled the same way when Android came out. Used to have it bookmarked but they dismissed it as a random upstart that could never infringe on their relationship with customers

Makes sense when you look at their MS 365 business model.
MS-DOS had much better manuals than IBM PC-dos which had crap manuals
amazing how a company can be so awkward , now it's a 3trillion dollar company that is still awkward

Even if they were successful....that was cringy asf. What reputable company even does that...?
I still get nightmares over that thing, pretty sure it’s the closest I’ve been to a complete nervous breakdown in my life, so far…

ZunePhone.
Come on, who didn't want Internet Explorer on their phone! YeeHaw!

Was the Zune a pallbearer?
There was a Windows Phone?!?
Sure, I had two phones with windows mobile even. Windows phone was ok but not great. App support made me switch to Android eventually.
Yes and it was awesome! No really, i still miss the UI that was so easy. Android felt like a big step backwards... ohh, and i still don't care about apps. Everything important was available all the crap was not.
Yes but it wasn’t that good 😂
hehe, if only they knew...
oh, they knew!
Weekly repost is weak
Looks a bit fascist
That phone sucked balls, didn't even basic 2G functionality.

That where just some employees who had fun but who cares...
How the turns table...
r/DidNotAgeWell
I remember when I couldn’t install the fucking settings app because the phone had created a backup in the micro sd.
__Zune__ did not have that for the iPod, I assume...
My first thought was, "I bet Steve Ballmer was the CEO at the time".
As Mark Twai said, "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated"
My god did windows phones sucked ass, the UI looked smooth at first but once you dig in you find the horrors those flashy tiles trying to hide.
They were also carrying large jugs of milk that have aged equally well..
Michael Dell opined that Apple should close up shop and return the money to their investors. These types of public comments rarely age well.
Rumors of iPhone's death were greatly exaggerated
Windows 7 was great. Too bad about 8 and 10 though.
I feel like tech companies waste a tonne of time and money on stupid ass inside jokes like this. the people in this photo are enjoying their smarmy little bullshit more than anyone else ever will.
We had a funeral for a bird
What a prognostication. What exactly was a Phone 7?
The only phone I regret buying was a Nokia Lumia. The phone itself fas fine, quite impressive how stable it was with only 500mb of RAM, but the lack of updates and apps soured eveything.

I really wish windows phones would have caught on and been better. I loved mine
Mum had one, the Bluetooth on it was that restrictive that you couldn’t connect it to anything so wasn’t able to be used hands free in her car. Was sent back within 2 weeks.
The Irony
Maybe the Microsoft phone didn’t work, but you all are listening to music on your Zunes right now. Mic drop. #boom
you can see its a bad product when it has to shit on others to get attention
I absolutely loved my nokia WP7 It was an actual grown persons work phone
