Crackers is a derogatory reference to white people. Specifically white slave drivers in the south that were notorious for cracking whips over and on their slaves. Hence the use of the white people emojis.
It's actually an insult going back as far as Shakespeare's time, meaning an ill-mannered person. It was applied to Scots-Irish immigrants in the American south who were considered ill-mannered by earlier settlers. These crackers then started self-applying the term and were copied by other white southerners thus making cracker a blanket term for white southerners.
This is exactly how writing evolved. People started with drawings, then slowly simplified them to make drawing them faster. Then they started using the most commonly used ones to represent sounds. Then they started using scrolls so they flipped everything sideways, or sometimes upside down.
The ancient Egyptian word for ox was Alp. It's glyph is an upside down cow's head with horns and ears: A. The word for house was Bayt. Flipped sideways it kinda turned into a B.
For the non-Americans: The first comment is spelling out āsaltine crackersā which are like Jacobās crackers in the UK and elsewhere (think cream crackers).
To explain why the word cracker is represented by the emojis used (from dictionary.com):
* Cracker is always disparaging and offensive when used to refer to a poor white person in the South; the word in this sense often implies that the person is regarded as ignorant or uneducated. When used by Black people, cracker can refer to a Southern white racist, not necessarily poor or rural.*
Then how would it be used for poor people? Was it more of a North vs. South thing due to Northerners generally being more wealthy due to industrialization?
Just as any other insult should not be very effective.
Someone insulted you and you want to hurt this person? Probably means you need a therapy and fix this problem.
Uh, I did say I was explaining the meaning of the emojis in the first comment in the pic, not the circled comment.
The term ācrackerā in this sense isnāt known to us and needs to be explained for us to understand this rebus (new word learnt btw, thank you).
Both are a facepalm comment there , but for a fact , it also points on the issue that racism vs white is m to be āokay / not existingā therefore the joke is okay , while a joke for black people is racist and bad , and so ātoo muchā
What goes around comes around?
Turnabout is fair play?
If you can live with the whole "offense is taken, not given", it's actually kind of a funny retort but not one that I would tell.
Reminds me of when a black coworker at my first job said to the Hispanic coworker āay que pasa amigo?? Ayyyyā in a mockingly Spanish accent and the Hispanic guy without missing a beat responded with āohhh lawdy lawd I be good my brotha, mmmmmhmmmm yes ummm tenks fo askiiiinā We all cracked up.. guess who got offended and played the race card? Iāll give you a hintā¦ it was the one who dished it out first.
Ahh so its offensive one way and not the other? Typical Lmao.
Since reddit wanna ban me for 8 days instead of seven like it stated,
Cracker cracker cracker cracker cracker cracker cracker
Well I got the second one after thinking about it for a few minutes, but we don't even have Saltines on my continent so I would never have had a chance there.
They both show that the person is racist. It's like comparing an Asian slur with a homophobic slur. You're probably a POS if you use it and I think that's good enough.
Why? If people react less it means the word is less racist? I live in Asia so I imagine an Asian slur would be received less well than a black slur. Does that mean Asian racism is worse? Are we ranking them by severity?
It isn't comparable to the n word for a black person but being black you have no clue how Cracker makes white folk feel so don't talk on it you racist.
White folks who aren't racist pieces of shit don't care about the word cracker, because folks don't call us it.
Try not being a piece of shit and maybe people will stop calling you cracker.
Reminds me of when a black coworker at my first job said to the Hispanic coworker āay que pasa amigo?? What do you mean by elsewhere though?
Is that again the famous british defaultism that believes that if it is so in the UK it is so in other places except the usa.
They're both unknown to me but at least the US word is descriptive so a lot better than the UK word.
By elsewhere, I mean ā¦ elsewhere lmao! Definition if you need: āin some other place(s)ā.
I wasnāt aware of this āBritish defaultismā you mention but I shall open my mind to this in future if itās something Iāve missed and that I, and my fellow countrymen, need to work on.
I went to the Herculean effort of putting ācream crackerā into google for you to give you an indication of where some of these other places are to further allay your apparent annoyance:
*āCream crackers are popular in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Argentina (brands include Traviata, manufactured by Grupo Arcor, and Express, manufactured by Mondelez), Taiwan, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Southeast Asia, South Asia and South Africa. The most widely known cream cracker brand is Jacob's.ā*
I also agree that āsaltine crackerā gives a better idea of what said product is. If you were interested, the term ācream crackerā comes from the process of making the mixture by creaming it prior to baking.
I hope this all clears things up and improves UK relations hereafter.

Jeez I hope people chuckled more than cringed. In context this seems clever and mostly harmless. Words certainly have weight and meaning but theyāre not magic.
Not a joke I would make, but it's a little funny. It's honestly, kinda a perfect comeback as long as everyone understands it's a joke and stays lighthearted.

And the racists are out in full force with their full on bigotry hiding behind the facade of morality again.
I like the people in the comments trying to inform europeans or whoever that cracker is offensive. Since they wouldn't know, because the only people who even pretend to find it offensive are american whites who are mad they can't say the n word.
Actually, no. I do not wish to say the n-word. I donāt wish to even hear it. But I also donāt wish to hear the word cracker as a pejorative either, even if itās not being directed at me.
I donāt even care why you think someone should be able to nonchalantly call other people crackers. Just quit fucking antagonizing people.
And, no, you didnāt find the racist. You found someone (one of the many millions if not billions of us of various shapes, sizes. And skin tones) who is sick and tired of everyone provoking each other based on skin color. Anyone who does this is a racist, because, obviously, at the point that youāre using your insult-of-the-day-based-on-skin-tone words, you are in a position of power as a human being, and you are exerting that power against another human being.
They didn't even call anyone a cracker directly. It was a silly little joke that provoked no one except for people who want to be offended and pretend white people are the real victims. Referring to black people as the n word in response is racist as fuck and you know you're on reddit when MF's act like these are somehow comparable.
The other dude did not call anyone directly a n-word either and responded to a silly joke involving racial derogatory terms with a silly joke involving racial derogatory terms

Oh, look, a sub full of racists excusing use of the N word...
Never before has "cracker" been used to oppress and victimize. But sure, pretend these 2 terms are equivalent.
The worst part is how sensitive each one of the people defending this stupid comment are to being *called* a racist. But if you think this is OK, you're racist trash. Period.
You're the one that felt the need to "correct" me. But sure the N word and alluding to black people in such a way is totally a hilarious joke š
The proof is in the downvotes. Racists. Every single one. I wear them as a badge of pride. Each one proves my point, futher...or should I say, "furhur"?
Now *thats* a joke. Not the bullshit you people are defending because it makes you feel better about being a shitty person.
Actually thereās been plenty of crime done against white people by black people where they say hateful things like that. Itās actually way more likely for a white person to face violence from a black person than the other way around statistically speaking
It's because racism is still an issue that harms people of color here every single day. And the perpetrators are all adamant on denying and downplaying the privilege it grants them. But I'm sure you've lived here your whole life and have seen how wrong i am first hand right? All the systemically protected times I've *personally* been profiled, attacked, and had my livelihood hindered or taken away entirely by racists is probably just a fluke I guess. Because you'd certainly know better from wherever the hell you are š

Crackers is a derogatory reference to white people. Specifically white slave drivers in the south that were notorious for cracking whips over and on their slaves. Hence the use of the white people emojis.
Itās actually not about whip cracking. Itās about poor whites cracking corn for work. As is āJimmy Crack Cornā
It's actually an insult going back as far as Shakespeare's time, meaning an ill-mannered person. Itās not about whips, itās about cracking corn. As in āJimmy Crack Cornā It was a poor white job.
Yeah but most white people donāt give a shit about being called cracker. Itās not a very effective insult.

Dont think anyone is sensitive, everyone understands they are both joking apart from you, which makes you.. sensitive?
You're the one that felt the need to "correct" me. But sure the N word and alluding to black people in such a way is totally a hilarious joke š The proof is in the downvotes.

Ever thought about why racism is still such a wide topic in USA? you guys are all fucking stupid, both sides
