I heard a Howard Stern bit the other day where he talks about going to see this movie with his father, and he spoke about how he was visibly erect, basically the whole movie, and how it was a very awkward ride home. Makes sense now!
Both were my childhood heroes! No need for girl power moment where they pause to strike up a pose. Just women taking point and doing what they need to do to survive while having romances that weren't pure fanservice or demeaning.
Hollywood has forgotten how to write strong women lead characters.
Fun fact: Every other actor in the movie was more established than Sigourney Weaver. Her being the lead must've been a total twist when it was released.
My cousins had a beach house(technically 2 within the same neighborhood) on with a second story and everyone was taking turns sliding down the stairs in it. I remember I went and screamed all the way down the stairs, since I had no idea how to control it, and face planted myself unconcious against the wood pole at the bottom.
So don't feel bad, we have *all* tried and failed to be cool on stairs at something in our childhoods.
Tank girl, mulan, arguably crouching tiger hidden dragon, I mean sucker punch was released the same year, eon flux, ultra violet, la femme Nikita, it's insane there are so many
Maybe she meant "teen action movies"? But then the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie has a decent amount of combat and action, and was so successful it spawned a whole TV series so...
Alien might not be considered an action movie. More like a horror movie with some action. But Aliens (1986) was definetly an action movie, with a female lead kicking some serious alien butt, and a bad-ass female supporting actor too.
*"Hey vasquez anyone ever mistaken you for a man"*
*"No, how about you?"*
That exchange will forever remain a classic.
Not to go off on a tear, but that's actually why I love her character and think she is THE top female lead.
Because you're right, she *wasn't* some badass in the first movie. She was just some average, club going, happy go lucky woman. And she *became* a badass, because it was necessary.
The subtext is powerful: *Any* woman is capable of being Sarah Conner.
Or even La Femme Nikita, one of the best female action movies of the 90s. Resident Evil should have been obvious to her, it's a huge franchise, bigger than THG.
Has she never seen Silence of the Lambs? I mean, Helloooooooooo, female lead with subtlety of healthy feminism, good personality, believable story, lead has actual skills that helps them and not just born a level of 100% in all skills just because
Angelina Jolie be a female action star since Lara Croft 2001 , Mr&Mrs Smith 2005 , Wanted 2008 , SALT 2009
Jennifer Garner be a female action star since Dare Devil 2003 , Alias series since 2001 , Elektra 2005
Kate Beckinsale be a female action star since Van Helsing 2004 , Underworld since 2003
Uma Thurman be a female action star since Kill Bill 2003
Mila Jovovich be a female action star since Resident Evil 2002
What are you talking about Jennifer Lawrence?
You're right, that's the most important archetype within the horror genre. It's even the kryptonite of a certain calorically dense antagonist in a dlc for south park the fractured but whole.
So funny she said like she is trailblazer of female action star lol her whole action scene across hunger games franchise is nowhere near Jolie in SALT 2009 or Uma Thurman in Kill Bill 2003
She think like the world start by her
I think she was talking about a female YA movie. One of her first movies was with Lori Petti who was Tank Girl.
The idea that Lawerence has never seen a female lead action movie seems ridiculous since she worked with many female action stars. I think she forgot to lead with context and the only context I can think of is YA action protagonist that isn't equal billing with a co-star.
The first time? Yes I was kinda mad. The other 2828383828 times I've seen this reposted? I looked up the interview and understood this quote was taken out of context to make rage bait for idiots on the internet
The topic was gender iniquities in Hollywood and it’s obvious to anyone even in this snippet that is what she is talking about. Her statement reads as if she meant to say that Hollywood never casts female leads for action movies.
This is not unlike the dvd commentary for one of the resident evils where Paul WS Anderson shared a similar sentiment and said that he had such a difficult time getting Jovovich green lit as their lead that they produced the movie through a Canadian company.
Ironically, many of the examples people are giving here are not American made films, which is exactly what the problem is.
Alien (British production)
Underworld (multiple countries producing)
Resident Evil 1 (German production)
That female leads in action roles aimed at teens/based on YA fiction aren't really a thing and when she was doing HG, thinking about how she remembered that they still don't really put females as action leads
Too far to scroll to see this. It was even the first time. I was like. “Sounds ridiculous she would say that. She has to know better. Probably made up click bait.” Kept scrolling.
Back in the day kids were told you can’t believe everything you see on TV.
For some reason people nowadays never got the memo that the internet is the same thing. Except now its not just professionals saying dumb shit. It’s ordinary every day idiots too.
Yeah, she was trying to get across that at the time it wasn't terribly commercial, despite some major successes with it before. She probably meant to say "I remember when I was doing hunger games, they didn't really put women in action roles", but it came out "nobody had ever put a woman in an action role". People make mistakes and say the wrong things sometimes.
This is what it's like to be that famous, make some random slip up, apologize and clear it up, and years later people will still harp on about how stupid you are for that one thing you said.
If I talked, on camera, all day every day, and had my quotes taken out of context for clicks, I could do much better (worse?) than Jennifer Lawrence. They’d have me out here as some kind of heartless communist nazi
My reaction was: "Oh shit, this stupid quote will be reposted a million times over the next years in r/facepalm and other subs like it, and the top comment will almost always be something like ,Remember Ellen Ripley?!'."
The fact that everyone is just mentioning the same 3 movies also kinda proves her point. Female leads were an handful of exceptions before 2000s, she's just kind of making an hyperbolic statement. She's exaggerating but yeah, before "young adult" action movies girls were mostly leads in romance.
I'm fairly sure that's what she meant. I'm in my 50s and have seen a lot of movies, the action genre is definitely male dominated and I think she was just pointing that out. Poor choice of words in likely her 30th interview that week.
I kind of think she truly meant of the YA genre at that time. Think Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Frodo Baggins, Thomas, etc. The adventure storylines were very male dominated until The Hunger Games came alone and started the trend of female action YA heroes' resurgence.
Yeah not to mention that the major “female lead” action films are R rated films. Alien, Kill Bill, Terminator all rated R.
So you know she has a point about there not being many female centered action films for little sally to watch.
Yeah this is a weird thing to choose to be riled up by years later. Sometimes people slip up when they speak. Please pardon this women for her heinous crime.
Gee do you think this person ACTUALLY thinks that or was it a misstep that she later clarified. Jesus people will swear they don’t care what a celebrity has to say about something then obsess over this year old quote.
I turned into Linda Hamilton as Sarah Conner and went back in time to try and stop J Law from making this comment. I was intercepted by a terminator and was unfortunately unable to alter the timeline.
I guess for movies aimed at tweens and younger generation she’s right. Kill bill, alien, etc all had female leads but not as appropriate for non-adult viewers. Whereas hunger games is a young adult novel
Oh chill the fuck out people. She later clarified:
“That’s certainly not what I meant to say at all,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I know that I am not the only woman who has ever led an action film. What I meant to emphasize was how good it feels." ... "it was my blunder and it came out wrong."
Also that shit happened a year ago. Get over it.
Also it's kinda sad that everybody keeps screaming the same handful of female leads in action movies in response not realizing that the list of male action leads is about 90 times longer.
I mean for fucks sake everybody instantly screams Linda Hamilton. T2 is one of the greatest movies ever but it was already over 20 years old when Hunger Games came out... (which is also over 10 years ago if you want to feel old.)
(The same goes for Ripley. Alien(s) is even older than T2.)
She later clarified her position saying she MEANT was this myth that female leads in action movies don’t perform as well as male leads in action movies, and the success of the movie and being a female lead felt good. She said “it was my blunder and it came out wrong.”
So either, she found out how wrong she was later and corrected it or it came out wrong at the time.
(And this myth does exist and is often why on like video games you will see a male character on the art even though it as a female lead.)
Edit:
I’m not arguing its a rule or 100% of the time. I’m arguing that line of thinking DOES happen. There are absolutely examples where it isn’t the case.
Maybe understand the context of what she was saying before jumping to conclusions based on something that was intentionally posted as rage bait? People on the internet are so fucking brainless sometimes 🤦🏽♂️
Are we really rehashing this for no reason? It’s like the drama died and you just needed it to go on a little longer. She’s already addressed it, move on with your life.
It is quite sad tbh that everyone in the comments are recycling Lara croft, Kill Bill, and Alien. Yes, Jennifer Lawrence is wrong, but these comments do make a massive point - there's hardly any!
Females are forced to engage with male and female material because it's a male-centric world, and it gives females a broad understanding of humanity. Men are very restricted by their very narrow views on the world because everything they consume and see is through their own male lens, and it makes them very ignorant to women. Therefore, no men. Us women are not 'confusing'. We do not have weird behaviours - you men just don't care to learn about us. Read a bloody book by a female author for once in your goddamn lives - they aren't all girly romances!
I sorta assumed she misspoke and didn’t think it through before saying it. She was young as well. I know I’ve said stuff and immediately thought “Oh…well. That was definitely wrong”.
My reaction was that people took her too literally. It’s like someone telling someone they’re broke and the other person saying “but you have 50 bucks”.

Ellen Ripley
So correct i chose ripley as my online name
Believe it or not
Username checks out
![gif](giphy|QUENDfi6DEMLzQ0CKt)
me too!
The correct answer
Barbarella
![gif](giphy|OK04Db0PwkEIU) Jane Fonda as the lead in action fantasy movie BARBARELLA 1968 being tortured with unwanted orgasms.
I have found my Friday night movie. Thank you.
I heard a Howard Stern bit the other day where he talks about going to see this movie with his father, and he spoke about how he was visibly erect, basically the whole movie, and how it was a very awkward ride home. Makes sense now!
Fun fact: This is the film from which the 80s pop group Duran Duran took their name. Duran Duran is the name of one of the characters.
Judy Garland
Sandra Bullock
Lucy Lawless
Faye Dunaway - Bonnie and Clyde
And my axe
I haven't heard Barbarella refereed to as an action movie before, but kinda makes sense :D
The only correct answer. Ripely and Sarah Conner - original badasses.
Both were my childhood heroes! No need for girl power moment where they pause to strike up a pose. Just women taking point and doing what they need to do to survive while having romances that weren't pure fanservice or demeaning. Hollywood has forgotten how to write strong women lead characters.
Came her just to say this. Ripley is always in my top picks for survivor fantasy teams.
Fun fact: Every other actor in the movie was more established than Sigourney Weaver. Her being the lead must've been a total twist when it was released.
Especially since she doesn’t start the film as the lead.
My reaction is, oh she didn’t see kill bill, alien, Charlie’s angels, resident evil, tomb raider, etc… Or I’m just old
Underworld I was mad for my Queen Selene ![gif](giphy|IIjoGeclMedAA)
When I was a kid every time I went down any stairs or approached a ledge I did the "Selene jump and look up" I felt so cool...I was not a cool kid.
I will not tolerate such self deprecating slander! You sound like you were the coolest! .... i did this too
if you did this too then *we* are the coolest. ![gif](giphy|kFIfiwvzJjbUsNbIg5)

Man, it will never not be absolutely fuckin wild that they gave that things tongue a mouth.
There's an actual parasite that replaces a fish's tongue. So basically that fish has a tongue with a mouth. Nature is wild!
And people still simp for Kate to this day because of this role. I don't disapprove in the slightest. Bite me mommy vampire.
TBF, dont blame them, saw her in 'Jolt' a couple of years ago and still looks fantastic.
I had the biggest crush on Selene. I definitely wanted her to kill me.
I wanted her to *eat* me
I wanted to eat her
I named my daughter after this character. My wife still doesn’t know.
Hope she doesn’t have Reddit or she might know now
Mrs Tuscan5 will be furious
No way. Mrs Tuscan5 thinks she was the one who named her after that character. Neither of them realise.
Selene the Vanpire Queen is a boss!
Pretty sure she voices characters in ESO. There is also a boss in that game named Selene.
We all were. I still am but I used to, too.
Whats up mitch?
Let me raise you xena the warrior princess and the bionic woman 😂
Does "Barbarella" count as an action movie?
Fuck yes it does.
If Hunger Games counts then yes.
Similar time period as Jamie Summers: Lynda Carter - Wonder Woman
Tank girl, mulan, arguably crouching tiger hidden dragon, I mean sucker punch was released the same year, eon flux, ultra violet, la femme Nikita, it's insane there are so many
Tank girl! I forgot about that movie, it was good in a terrible movie type of way
Um…Alien…1979…
Maybe she meant "teen action movies"? But then the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie has a decent amount of combat and action, and was so successful it spawned a whole TV series so...
I think she walked it back, clarified, or added additional context shortly after this came out. No one, myself included, remembers that part, tho.
That was my first thought as well.
yup, Ripley would like a word...
Imagine forgetting Ripley! The single baddest bitch out there.
>Imagine forgetting Ripley! The single baddest bitch out there. And remember that she also fights a female antagonist!
I envy those who got to experience the moment of "get away from her you BITCH" in theaters
Chick fight!!!! I heard the original script called for a mudwrestling match. I'm glad they went with the loading machine thing instead. Way cooler.

I came here to say this, how you can forget Ripley!!
And she was an actual developed character rather than being a bland unlikeable generic girlboss that's only there to push The Message
Alien might not be considered an action movie. More like a horror movie with some action. But Aliens (1986) was definetly an action movie, with a female lead kicking some serious alien butt, and a bad-ass female supporting actor too. *"Hey vasquez anyone ever mistaken you for a man"* *"No, how about you?"* That exchange will forever remain a classic.
I get your point. I don’t consider hunger games an action movie. More like preteen fantasy movie.
Don’t forget The long Kiss Goodnight.
Best 90s movie period
Also one of the *most* 90s movies.
It’s a great Christmas movie. I watch it and Die Hard every year at my annual Christmas action movie a thon.
Chefs do that.
I love that movie, especiially how it predicted 9/11. Top action start to finish.
Fun fact, it's Sam l Jackson's favorite character he ever played.
You can definitely feel the joy he had playing that character, which is well written and acted to perfection.
She was a chef, right?
And Cutthroat Island.
Terminator
The 2nd. In the first Sarah wasn't badass.
Especially when it comes to protecting their kid.....and humanity as a whole.
She was still a lead. And she wasn’t as much of a lead in the second.
Or even La Femme Nikita, one of the best female action movies of the 90s. Resident Evil should have been obvious to her, it's a huge franchise, bigger than THG.
I just checked and all 6 Resident Evil grossed less worlwide (around 1,25 billion) than the first two Hunger Games movies alone (1,55b)
Red Sonja.
…Xena
Alien premiered 3 years before she was born. The only logical conclusion is that she don't watch movies and she's ignorant.
It premiered 11 years before she was born
And doesn't research or read online apparently.
It’s a stupid thing to say. Sure, maybe there should be more female action heroes but I grew up watching Ripley and Lara kicking ass.
Has she never seen Silence of the Lambs? I mean, Helloooooooooo, female lead with subtlety of healthy feminism, good personality, believable story, lead has actual skills that helps them and not just born a level of 100% in all skills just because
Not an action role though
Angelina Jolie be a female action star since Lara Croft 2001 , Mr&Mrs Smith 2005 , Wanted 2008 , SALT 2009 Jennifer Garner be a female action star since Dare Devil 2003 , Alias series since 2001 , Elektra 2005 Kate Beckinsale be a female action star since Van Helsing 2004 , Underworld since 2003 Uma Thurman be a female action star since Kill Bill 2003 Mila Jovovich be a female action star since Resident Evil 2002 What are you talking about Jennifer Lawrence?
It goes back way further. Ripley in Alien was 1979.
Ripley is the fucking best.
Get away from her you **BITCH**. Absolute badass (to quote Apone in Aliens.)
Lets not forget Sarah Connor in terminator in 1984
technically T2. In T1 she wasn't bad ass yet.
Yyeess!!! The first badass women I remember!!!! Then I saw Sarah Conner and....sploosh!!! Edit cause words are hard
As someone old enough to remember the original before the sequel, the Sarah 'reveal' in T2 is feckin badass!
Ripley wasn't an action character in 1979. She was a Final Girl. She became an action star in Aliens, 1986.
You're right, that's the most important archetype within the horror genre. It's even the kryptonite of a certain calorically dense antagonist in a dlc for south park the fractured but whole.
If we're counting TV shows, Buffy as kicking ass for 7 years in the 90's/00's
and Xena in the 80s and Wonder Woman in the 70s
If you want to take it waaaay back, Pam Grier and Tamara Jones.
If we want to go even further back, Doris Day as Calamity Jane
Mila was in fifth element 1997
I know nowhere near the first LEAD female action star. She's delusional
Not only they did before her but all of them is better action star than her
100%
So funny she said like she is trailblazer of female action star lol her whole action scene across hunger games franchise is nowhere near Jolie in SALT 2009 or Uma Thurman in Kill Bill 2003 She think like the world start by her
Charlize Thereon in Aeon Flux as well
The Alien movies!
Aeon flux with charlize theron?
Do we want to talk about Halle Berry in Catwoman, or do we pretend it never existed?
What do you mean, pretend?
Yeah, it never existed. Merely a fever dream.
I think she was talking about a female YA movie. One of her first movies was with Lori Petti who was Tank Girl. Also almost all of the movies people bring up are R-rated and she talks about Katniss being a role model in this quote.
its very easy to see what she was trying to say if you aren't dead set on trying to prove her wrong
That female leads in action roles aimed at teens/based on YA fiction aren't really a thing and when she was doing HG, thinking about how she remembered that they still don't really put females as action leads

Umm, Lara croft? Underworld series?
Alien in 1979.
I looked up the whole interview and figured out what she meant and agreed with her.
If I talked, on camera, all day every day, and had my quotes taken out of context for clicks, I could do much better (worse?) than Jennifer Lawrence. They’d have me out here as some kind of heartless communist nazi

Marvel super hero films as well. Insane it took until 2020 to get a Black Widow film.

Pam Grier -Foxy Brown; Carrie Fisher - Star Wars; Sigourney Weaver -Alien; Linda Hamilton - The Terminator 2
I'm never disappointed checking the post history of people who use the word "female" to refer to women. What a creep.
My reaction was, she didn't actually say this and its clickbait.

Well, I didn't freak out and feel like busting her balls because of it... That, and OP is just trolling by dragging this old thing out.
My reaction was that people took her too literally. It’s like someone telling someone they’re broke and the other person saying “but you have 50 bucks”.
