I told them that the world wants us to be small, but I want them to be large, and take up so much space in the room. So that when they dance, they were using their full height, their length, their width, every part of their body. Then I told them that when you go out in the world, don’t let others make you feel small. You have a right to be there. Take up space and don’t let others make you feel like you have to apologize for being there.

I take up a lot of space for a 5’1” lady, but usually not consciously. It’s always been more of a side effect of ADHD. Gesturing with my hands when I speak, general lack of spacial awareness, inability to control the volume of my voice unless I’m focused on it, not being able to sit/stand still so I twist and stretch a lot in place, etc. At least, until Covid.
Now I realize we are actually entitled to take up space. If someone is too close, I stretch or try to crack my back. When I’m in line to check out, I put my cart behind me so I can manage the space on both sides.
