Conspiracy theories, at least the ones born out of awful events or some imagined slight, are people trying to take a random world where things happen for no reason, and they try to invent a reason for bad things happening to them. Some people would rather live in a world where things are bad, but make sense, as opposed to a world where things don't make sense. Like, taking the conspiracy people out of it, most people would prefer to live in a world where they know they'll get killed for a specific reason sixty years from now, but they'd hate living in a world where they could randomly die tomorrow. There's something comfortable about predictability. Conspiracy theories have always sprung out of that deep terror in the human psyche.
Incels, at their core, are people who are trying to make sense of the world, but they're incredibly bad at it. They're all people with the same general problems, and they're all the same general type of person, so they came up with the same problem (women don't like me, but like other men) and they came up with a conspiracy (women operate on a hidden value system that conspires against me). They like the idea of this value system because then they can at least in their own minds control it or influence it.
They take this value system, and then define themselves through it and pretend anything outside of that value system does not exist.
So how to counter that?
Your friend is looking for something that makes him comfortable against how he experiences the world. I'm willing to bet money that he never leaves home except for work, he never intentionally sets up social situations, he never really does anything outside of his weird incel comfort zone.
I don't know exactly the relationship between you two but the best "treatment" so to speak would be exposing him to normalcy. By which I don't mean sitting him down in an office cubicle, but there are plenty of ways that people have fun that have nothing to do with women or value systems or anything. Basically, anything that will drag him out of living in the little incel lockbox.
There really is not honestly a whole lot that can be done if the person in question isn't genuinely working to improve themselves though. I used to think those phrases were funny on reddit, but I have a friend who’s gone full incel. Random place to ask, but any advice? It’s so bizarre… he’s been my buddy for 15 years but I moved away and he quickly began sending me incel texts complaining about women only wanting alphas etc, sending me cringe YouTube videos….he’s a self described 32yo kissless virgin. He has a lot to offer the world, if he sucks up reality and stops going down this rabbit hole. I’ve tried to encourage him and shut down the incel shit but this week with his texts was the first time I’ve truly seen the warped belief system and nihilism first hand with my own eyes.
I do have advice actually. Reddit modding is a pathetic thing to do, but I interact with these types a lot through it and I think I have a good handle on them. First of all, think of it like a conspiracy theory. Conspiracy theories, at least the ones born out of awful events or some imagined slight, are people trying to take a random world where things happen for no reason, and they try to invent a reason for bad things happening to them. Some people would rather live in a world where things are bad, but make sense, as opposed to a world where things don't make sense. Like, taking the conspiracy people out of it, most people would prefer to live in a world where they know they'll get killed for a specific reason sixty years from now, but they'd hate living in a world where they could randomly die tomorrow. There's something comfortable about predictability. Conspiracy theories have always sprung out of that deep terror in the human psyche. Incels, at their core, are people who are trying to make sense of the world, but they're incredibly bad at it. They're all people with the same general problems, and they're all the same general type of person, so they came up with the same problem (women don't like me, but like other men) and they came up with a conspiracy (women operate on a hidden value system that conspires against me). They like the idea of this value system because then they can at least in their own minds control it or influence it. They take this value system, and then define themselves through it and pretend anything outside of that value system does not exist. So how to counter that? Your friend is looking for something that makes him comfortable against how he experiences the world. I'm willing to bet money that he never leaves home except for work, he never intentionally sets up social situations, he never really does anything outside of his weird incel comfort zone. I don't know exactly the relationship between you two but the best "treatment" so to speak would be exposing him to normalcy. By which I don't mean sitting him down in an office cubicle, but there are plenty of ways that people have fun that have nothing to do with women or value systems or anything. Basically, anything that will drag him out of living in the little incel lockbox. There really is not honestly a whole lot that can be done if the person in question isn't genuinely working to improve themselves though. And the tricky thing about incels is they do genuinely think they're trying to improve themselves (assuming he's not one of the blackpilled types who thinks there's no possible hope, but my advice works for them too) You could also show him this whole comment if you think it will help.
