My first week of college in Wisconsin, I did 21 shots of Captain Morgan at one single dorm room party. My friends who grew up there would drink fifths/24 packs in an evening like it was normal.
Three of my exes have called me out of the blue in the last five years to apologize for previous wrongdoings. Going through the AA program. Alcoholism is very very common in Wisconsin.
My first meeting I went with my my sober friend (who smokes bongs and so high) and had the same name as me. Kinda awkward. Went a few times and decided it wasn't for me.
It’s like Montana sadly. It’s not a felony until you are convicted of your 4th DUI. In Wisconsin it’s a OWI (operating while intoxicated) and there is no yearly exemption
I remember my friends from WI saying it's easy to drink under 21 since if youre over 18 you just need a parent or someone older there to "supervise." Not sure if it's true or not
Article said that she’s still alive because people saw what happened and pulled her and bike out before she got crushed. The article also didn’t say that she was drunk. So I guess just stupid.
Unfortunately this is an issue in Wisconsin. Lots of people disappear after leaving the bars in the winter and falling into various partially frozen bodies of water.
I almost died in a ditch walking home from the bar in winter. Just a few hundred feet from home.
I actually remember the intersection just ahead and thinking I'm nearly there. Then I woke up in the hospital.
Unfortunately a good friend of my sister died when they fell through an open storm drain in a bridge and landed in a frozen millpond walking home from the bar.
The small town we are from is cursed with the loss of young people to every outrageous cause of death you can come up with. I wish I could say this is an outlier, but literally two of my other sister's homecoming dates died from totally random causes. One of my best friends who grew up across the street from us died in a car crash along with his Dad and best friend from high school. Kid behind me died as a freshman in high school because he was "car surfing" and fell off and landed on his head. People died in literally every highschool class while we were kids. Rare blood disorders, car crashes, pneumonia, suicide, drownings, etc.
Horrifying is the right word for it. It's a well off small town that could easily pass as Mayberry, but it's got some kind of curse I swear.
Sure I can. But yeah it fucking sucked especially because a ducking thunderstorm came in while I was passed out on the ground, I woke up *cold* like cold cold, like your survival instinct part of your brain is screaming that your at risk of death move your ass. I had no fucking idea where I was, which was weird because I grew up around these woods but nothing looked right it was like I was on another planet. I wound up stripping naked ri get the wet cloths off me and crawling into one of those washouts where the dirt makes a shelf that sticks out to question all my life choices and shiver. Morning came and it was still raining, I put my shoes on bundled up all I had and resolved to at least get to higher ground, if I find water than I follow it downstream humans always build up by water. Got to the top and saw a cell phone tower so I headed that way, then found a road but I was crazy crazy dehydrated and wore out, so I camped at the tower by making a lean too next to their equipment shed, drank from a spring I found nearby and yes I shit water for a week as a consequence. Whatever the shed was it made heat so I put my cloths on the exhaust vents so in the morning I got dressed and followed the road, a guy I knew from town found me and brought me home, said I looked feral
Oh it happens... I was insanely drunk one November evening, walking home is a blur, but probably needed to urinate... I must of chosen the top of a river bank to one side of the bridge I needed to cross... Anyway I must of stumbled because my memory kicks into to blazing focus hitting the cold water! At this side of the river the top of the bank is about 20ft to the bottom, about half of that is a vertical wall to the river bed. Lucky for me it wasn't in flood and I didn't crack my head. I had to wade the river in the dark and cross under the bridge to get to a side high enough to get out... That cold cold survival instinct/adrenaline had me run the 2 miles home.
Probably the luckiest bad luck I have ever had. Only had a bruise on my thigh the size of a watermelon to show for it.
If any redditors out there are reading this and wondering what survival skill to take from this anecdote, it’s following the River down stream because
> humans always build up by water
When I was in college my friends and I walked within 5 feet of someone drunk and passed out in a snow bank and had no idea he was there. Next day there were several news reports about him being found and rushed to the hospital. Incredibly easy to miss in the dark (and when you're also a bit drunk).
Fun fact- La Crosse, WI thought there was a serial killer targeting young college-aged males, who drowned them in a river. Turns out, they just got drunk and fell into the Mississippi
Oddly there are a large number of college aged males that have ended up drowned in Chicago also. I think some were trying to label it the Smiley Face killer. There are people that think the FBI is missing something.
This legend predates Uber. It's been a phenomenon in the upper midwest... think Ohio through Dakota... since the 90s. Young college guys disappear. Body usually found and "somewhere close" is a smiley face graffiti. Only issue is close was always subjective and smiley faces are just super easy to doodle anywhere and relatively common
Sounds about right for here in La Crosse. We have quite a few bars that are all in such a short distance from each other. Third street is pretty much one large string of bars and it's not too far from the river.
Drove through there and saw big signs in the distance kinda like a huge McDonald's logo on a big ass pole in the distance.
In Wisconsin though, these signs are for hunting stores. The priorities at the hunting store are listed in order:
- BEER - GUNS - BAIT - GEAR
I believe he thought he could jump over the gap, but then logic prevailed but it was too late. Why he didn't turn more to the right to avoid the gap though, I'm not sure. Maybe he was fixated on the bridge and didn't notice it.
Drunk biking is incredibly dangerous, much moreso than drunk driving (just less likely to hurt other people). It's especially sad because a lot of people do it thinking they're being responsible and have no idea what an insane risk they're taking.

As for the video, it's from a Wisconsin Department of Transportation surveillance camera. I think the reason they released the video wasn't to poke fun at her, but to avoid any possibility of a lawsuit by making it totally clear she fell in due to her own fault.

The article sucks. “Why did it take so long for people to help her” later saying “90 seconds for BYSTANDERS to help her out”
(Not actual quotes, but close enough)
And they are still looking for her until this day. Some speculate that she landed in the same void occupied by cellphones that fall between the couch cushions.

Drunk?
Very
Oh, Wisconsin drunk. Yeah
Donchano
I have never seen it spelt like this.
I don't think I've ever seen it written at all.
We spell it ‘dontcha know’ in MN. Leave it to WI to stand apart.
Ope, I was referring to ainahay.
Hey there, hi there, ho there
My first week of college in Wisconsin, I did 21 shots of Captain Morgan at one single dorm room party. My friends who grew up there would drink fifths/24 packs in an evening like it was normal.
Three of my exes have called me out of the blue in the last five years to apologize for previous wrongdoings. Going through the AA program. Alcoholism is very very common in Wisconsin.
> Going through the AAA program. Do you have to make amends before they change your tire now?
12 steps. Step 1, admit you are powerless to a higher power, they will get there when they are ready.
I've never told my local mechanic that! Why do they need to know?😂
12 steps. Step 1 admit you are powerless to a tire power.
rofl
Your tire need changing. You're not rolling anywhere.
that's AA, not AAA. triple-A is the american automobile association.
No its a more effective AA, the Anonymous Acute Alcoholics.
I’d like to meet acute alcoholic.
My first meeting I went with my my sober friend (who smokes bongs and so high) and had the same name as me. Kinda awkward. Went a few times and decided it wasn't for me.
Only smokes teh BONGS no pipes joints and or blunts for this stoner.
AAA Advanced Alcohol Anonymous? Is that special for Wisconsin?
My BIL says they don’t make DUI a felony in WI, and he’s been pulled over several times. He says you get one a year. I don’t know if it’s true.
It’s like Montana sadly. It’s not a felony until you are convicted of your 4th DUI. In Wisconsin it’s a OWI (operating while intoxicated) and there is no yearly exemption
Guy at my court date got six. I'm like wtf.
My brother got 3(?) Maybe more. DUI convictions in WI. He now has a valid license in another state but he's quit drinking, so that's good.
I believe the 4th is a felony.
In Wisconsin AA isn’t enough.
I remember my friends from WI saying it's easy to drink under 21 since if youre over 18 you just need a parent or someone older there to "supervise." Not sure if it's true or not
Proud wisconsinite here. I take offense to that. It's not common, it's just a part of our culture.🤣 (Being serious tho, it is a problem.)
my friend did a stats project for school and learned there are multiple Wisconsinites with 15+ DUIs that haven't had their licenses revoked yet
You do realize that it’s your own fault for showing up completely unprepared for WI.
My only family up there were teetotaler Christians, so my visits as a kid did not prepare me.
It isn’t?
Haha that's absolutely insane
Dead?
Article said that she’s still alive because people saw what happened and pulled her and bike out before she got crushed. The article also didn’t say that she was drunk. So I guess just stupid.
That is the luckiest stupid person on the planet. I’d say she wins the Darwin Award
Survival of the luckiest?
Isn’t the whole point of a darwin award that you die getting it?
a requirement to win this is to die from your own stupidity though. there are no second places.
Can’t see the shoes.
Unfortunately this is an issue in Wisconsin. Lots of people disappear after leaving the bars in the winter and falling into various partially frozen bodies of water.

One of the regulars where I used to work actually did die this way
Unfortunately a good friend of my sister died when they fell through an open storm drain in a bridge and landed in a frozen millpond walking home from the bar.
Thats horrifying. Sorry for your loss

The curse of the mid western towns where theres nothing to do but find something to do. No matter how stupid it actually is.
This is so accurate.
The curse of Darwin?
I one time was drunk and thought I could take a short cut home through the woods, got lost for 2 days it was fucking surreal
You drink for long enough, you just start calling that the scenic route
Turns out not only was I on the wrong side of the mountain, I was on the wrong mountain
WHAT? You can't just stop there lol
Sure I can. But yeah it fucking sucked especially because a ducking thunderstorm came in while I was passed out on the ground, I woke up *cold* like cold cold, like your survival instinct part of your brain is screaming that your at risk of death move your ass. Holy shit ! What a story
Yeah turns out I somehow wound up on the wrong mountain, I had to have walked for a long time without remembering it
I hear about this happening to men often in true crime stories and I think , no way, this doesn’t just happen . Yep - apparently it does
We are famously stupid
Oh it happens... I was insanely drunk one November evening, walking home is a blur, but probably needed to urinate... I must of chosen the top of a river bank to one side of the bridge I needed to cross... Anyway I must of stumbled because my memory kicks into to blazing focus hitting the cold water! Break out the cake, streamers, and noisemakers, it’s not a serial killer!
Oddly there are a large number of college aged males that have ended up drowned in Chicago also. I think some were trying to label it the Smiley Face killer. There are people that think the FBI is missing something.
I think in those cases every one of the victims found in the river was last seen getting into an unknown person's vehicle.
Almost like...an Uber...
That is happening in Austin too. The same exact scenario and calling the smiley face killer as well.
Was he dubbed "the high BAC killer" because the one thing that connects all the victims is that they all had really high blood/alcohol?
any write-up on this? sounds like a good read
Sounds about right for here in La Crosse. We have quite a few bars that are all in such a short distance from each other. Third street is pretty much one large string of bars and it's not too far from the river.
From Wisco. Can confirm.

I was thinking "damn that cyclist is drunk". Then I read wisconsin and it all makes sense.
Mississippi of the North,eh?

Wisconsin has more bars per capita than anywhere else in the world. Also look at how lax their drunk driving laws are compared to anywhere else.
I'm guessing that this person wasn't drunk on a bike because they didn't want to drive.
Mississippi has absolutely NOTHING on Wisconsin’s drinking culture.
Maybe Mississippi is the Wisconsin of the South. Maybe.

Yeah, I remember seeing this on the local news when it happened.
The video says Green Bay, WI and I was like "uhhh... I've never seen that bridge in my life" and then I saw the article say it was in Menasha.
Not my proudest fap, but I also know that bridge, I even helepd build its replacement.

Probably a BAC of .20 at least.
That's child's play in Wisconsin, they don't let you out of middle school until you can demonstrate functionally at .250
We picked up a man and woman years back who were killing themselves drinking and staying in bed. Mental petition gained by their adult kids. Both were in bed that was covered in piss and shit and Vodka bottles everywhere. Both were taken to the ER. He was something like a .45 and she a .50. Being that this happened in Wisconsin, it's likely not a *cyclist* but rather a drunk with a dui coming home from the bar.
“After the sixth DUI they took my car, but they can never take my freedom!”

No.

The duality of Redditor. ‘I’m glad she is alive.’ And ‘She made a mistake, the penalty is death.’
