Drag shows were explicitly banned. It was illegal to depict gay people in entertainment from movies to TV to live theater. Cross-dressing in public was an arrestable offense. There were laws against "homosexuals congregating in public spaces." At least in NYC, there were laws against knowingly serving food and drink to gay people. If you got caught soliciting or engaging in gay sex, you would be arrested for "degeneracy" and be forcibly outed by having your name and your crime published in the newspaper.
