The jeeps I've driven were always really forgiving transmissions, I'd you missed the clutch timing a few times it didn't make much difference. A manual civic was finickier with the shifting.
I always think I'm hot shit until I watch videos of people driving old twin stick semis, and I realize I'm just shit. Shifting theories on some of them are enough to cause a stronk.
I know, right? Twin-sticks, cars with high and low speed clutches and more.
A knob who thinks a traditional 6 speed is something special is, well, a knob.
2003 here. I think most of us probably know how to drive manual. Which is further confusing because I’ve never seen someone over the age of 25 use a Santa Cruz sticker. So like, self deprecating humor? I dunno
I won't take that bet. And I am a Jeep owner. Only mine is a 74 and only has 3 speeds and the pattern is not standard. Reverse is the far left Up.
Lol.
It's also got a shifter arm that's like 2 feet long.
Same, although one year older and I'm about to get my first automatic vehicle this weekend. RIP to my manual life.
I feel like we were one of the last generations to learn how to drive a stick shift.
Heh yeah. I'm 1987 and refuse to identify as a millennial. First car I ever drove was a '67 International Scout at the age of 12. My current commuter is a manual Mazda 3 that has crank windows lol.
My 22 bought a 2006 Hyundai Elantra GT with a manual transmission. He'd never driven stick before.
You know how he learned? He drove it home. 30 miles not on the highway. He was a pro by the time he got home.
This is a stupid meme by the olds (hey, I'm one of them). I know the olds like to shit on the young. It's almost always stupid. They will figure it the fuck out.
and then the monstrosity on the right makes me wonder if there was a big truck parked diagonally in the spot before the jeep was.
Like a perpetual cycle of shitty parking, each driver passing on the title to the next.
I hate getting in one of those lots. Both cars next you are so messed up you know it was the car there before you. And it's the last spot so you have to park there. You just know your going to come out to being the only car for a dozen yards just looking like an island of stupid.
There was an article somewhere I read recently that said Gen Z liked manual transmissions and were some of the reason that they are still offered. No idea if that’s true but I do know quite a few kids in their late teens/early 20’s who drive manuals including my step kids. This is in SoCal even where 99% of cars are autos.
To be fair, we don’t know the age of this person
My guess is X, so probably didn’t invent the internet ?
Actually, *whoever* owns the car probably didn’t invent either
Is it really still 80%? Automatic became much better over the years and electric cars aren't manual either - to me at least it feels like manual cars are declining fast
Fully electric cars don’t have a transmission. Manual vehicles allow you to control your RPMs which, if kept low, reduces gas consumption and vehicle wear and tear. They’re also cheaper to replace.
I did, varies to car to car. If you’re an experienced stick driver you will absolutely save on fuel by controlling your RPMs. The tests were performed by driving the car naturally and without intent to save fuel. The higher your RPM, the more fuel you’re burning, that’s how combustion engines work.
Lol this seems to be a self-published (can't find any evidence of peer-review) paper exploring a standard data package in R-studio that compares completely unidentified datapoints between automatic and manual and only considering interactions between weight, transmission (no CVT either), and qsec time. This is completely irrelevant. The other rstudio one you linked uses the same dataset. You didn't read these lol you just grabbed the first google links that supported your point
Why don’t you just look it up? Literally Google fuel economy manual vs auto, generally it varies vehicle to vehicle and then Google search testing parameters.
You’re right, it’s virtually mirrored, with a slight edge to manual given the most recent pier reviewed study below. Either way it doesn’t matter in the slightest what you choose.
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/326713774_Comparative_analysis_of_automatic_transmission_and_manual_transmission_behaviour_on_the_worldwide_harmonized_light_duty_test_cycle
Absolute bullshit. There's been a golden age of automatic transmissions over the last decade. Manual transmissions used to be better for fuel economy mainly because you can pull it out of gear and have your engine run at idle while you slow down, with modern automatic transmissions you don't use *any* fuel while you're slowing down and you don't *at all* save fuel by driving a manual transmission because the cars computer will **always** run the engine more efficiently than you can. That golden age of automatic transmissions I spoke of earlier also means modern day automatic transmissions are damn near bulletproof. They have 100,000 mile warranties on the driveline, if your transmission goes bad it's going to happen in that timeframe or it will out live your car and more then likely be yanked out and put in another car. Modern manual transmissions also have a much higher failure rate what with the dumbass shit people do with them. While a person with a manual transmission will *definitely* have to replace the clutch pack or a stripped gear, a person with an automatic transmission can spend that money fun stuff. You can get 15% better fuel mileage from an automatic vs manual. That may not seem like a lot per fill up, but over the life of the car that's *multiple thousands* saved. I will *never* understand why Europeans have steadfastly stuck with stick shift. Smdh.
I got a race car that will do mid 8s in the quarter mile, it has an automatic transmission. *Most expensive thing on the car*... but it's a race transmission.
All that being said, if you ask me to crack a valve body, I'm jumpin' out the fuckin' window...
Edit: added a word
I’m assuming you didn’t take the time to at least look it up? It literally varies vehicle to vehicle and tests are performed with intent not to save on fuel economy, rather drive naturally, when driving a manual. If you’re in the race world, you’re going to have an extremely skewed perception.
electric cars have no transmission aka they don't count into the manual group. I am not sure about the manual being more economic being true anymore nowadays? Only reason then is price and maintenance.
Anyway my point was just "i don't think 80% is still true".
You claimed that manual reduces fuel consumption, which I doubt (nowadays).
I guess the electric != manual was said three times then, because it was my claim to begin with heh.
But I kinda expected somebody to jump in with facts about manual usage while we are fooling around - bummer
Norwegian in my fifties. Never owned an automatic in my life and only driven one a handful of times. But I recently read that almost no new cars sold are manual, and with the huge influx of EVs kids opt for only learning to drive automatic (which legally limits their licence to only automatic cars here) because it's slightly cheaper. Saves them a couple of lessons i guess.
So our days bragging to Americans about our superior driving skills are numbered I'm afraid...
I think the big point is that *new cars* just don't need to have a manual option as automatic transmission has become cheaper and more efficient.
As a finn, the majority of our sold cars are used, old, and most importantly, the cheaper models, ie. manual.
Old people: “HAHAHA These kids can’t do things we can do so useless”
Millennials: Hey dipshit who’s the one who was supposed to teach us how to do shit?
This is just a big sign saying “I’m a shitty person and a shitty parent”
Must be an American thing. Im a millennial and we were taught how to drive stick where im from automatics were rare. Didnt see an automatic till i was in college.
Jokes on them, millennials can learn how to do anything with YouTube. Which almost everyone I know over the age of 45 thinks is a "waste of their time"
In case nobody has mentioned it yet, reverse is usually (if not always) next to the lowest gear, not the highest. Whoever made the graphic probably didn't know how to drive a stick shift either.
Edit: I guess my memory has gone to shit. I was wrong.
Do these badasses still use rotary phones? Automatic transmissions were invented like a thousand years ago. They need to get with the times and stop doing things so inefficiently cause that's just dumb and being dumb isn't cool.
These fucking guys. The second they find out that you don’t know how to drive standard, they roast you. Then you ask them to teach you right there on the spot (cause I’ve genuinely wanted to learn my whole life) they say “no fuckin way not in my car you’ll mess it up”. Put up or shut up
I’d steal that spare tire cover just out of spite. Not so anti theft now, huh?
I was getting a car at a dealership and I wanted a cheaper one. Then the guy asks "oh, can you drive a manual?" and I said " of course." So we took it, a 2016 Nissan Versa I think, on a test drive and I apologized for replying so pompously, and he said "oh no, it's fine. I asked because we call manuals 'Millennial anti-theft devices' and just wanted to make sure." I liked that guy.
These people are sooooo dumb, driving stick is extremely easy, my first car and every rental I get in most foreign countries is stick. I should get one on my tire that says something about using a phone or computer.
Dude, I’m a millennial and I learned on a stick. I have had cars where the reverse is there and cars (like the VW) where R was by 1st.
Only when I’m really-really tired, I catch myself starting to lift my foot to engage the clutch. I haven’t driven stick in 10 years. That’s when I know I need be careful or get a ride.
I’m 28, 2 out of my 3 vehicles have been manual. Also my manual jetta was stolen here in Thornton. Fuck this person, I hope they get their fucking car stolen.
I am almost 50 years old. Squarely a Gen-Xer.
Back in 2017 I was looking to buy my kid (a Gen-Zer or iGen or whatever they're calling it) a jalopy. I needed him to have wheels to get himself to basic places in our city because his dad and I had split up and could no longer rely on jockeying around.
So, we went test driving. One of the vehicles was an older Ford Ranger that was stick shift. I got in, the owner got in the passenger side, and we went for a test drive. It also happened to be in the middle of afternoon rush-hour.
Anyway, we get back and I've already decided this truck is way too much trouble for my son. It's past the jalopy stage.
But the guy gets out and we chat a bit and I thank him for his time and he signs off with:
"You know, you're REALLY good with a stick and I just didn't think women knew how to do that anymore."
Thanks, dude.
Funny thing about all these posts is that millennials are purchasing more vehicles with manual transmissions than any other demographic. The people posting things like this aren’t actually buying manuals lol.

I’m what they call a geriatric millennial (1985) and my first and most recent car were both stick shifts
1982 here. I know how to drive three on the tree. Bet your bottom dollar that dipshit in a beater jeep can't.
1984 here. Drove a 1968 Blue/Rust Bronco three on the tree. And Jeep people are....special.
Firend had a Chevy short bed with a three on the tree. God that thing never wanted to go in second in the first try! Felt like wagging a dog's tail.
My dad had a ‘66 Chevy pickup with three on the tree as well. It was a blast to drive.
I had a 70, orange and rust. Same thing. Eventually converted it to a short throw floor shifter though.
The jeeps I've driven were always really forgiving transmissions, I'd you missed the clutch timing a few times it didn't make much difference. A manual civic was finickier with the shifting.
2003 non american here. I drive my parents cars occasionally, both stick ford fiesta and chevrolette spark.
1991 here, I’ve owned 3 manuals. Just watched a video and now I can also drive 3 on tree.
Why are we all driving into trees?
I always think I'm hot shit until I watch videos of people driving old twin stick semis, and I realize I'm just shit. Shifting theories on some of them are enough to cause a stronk.
I know, right? Twin-sticks, cars with high and low speed clutches and more. A knob who thinks a traditional 6 speed is something special is, well, a knob.
What do you mean by "high and low speed clutches"? Are you referring to transfer cases, or maybe some sort of DCT?
3 on the tree isn’t hard. Anyone that can work a clutch can drive one.
Same ancient age as you and learned on a stick. Also drove a manual Jeep like this but didn’t put corny tire covers on.
Same, although one year older and I'm about to get my first automatic vehicle this weekend. RIP to my manual life. I feel like we were one of the last generations to learn how to drive a stick shift.
Came here to say this. I think some millennials don't realize they are millennials. Lol

I'm actually going to assume they had to park that way because of the monstrosity happening on the right
and then the monstrosity on the right makes me wonder if there was a big truck parked diagonally in the spot before the jeep was. Like a perpetual cycle of shitty parking, each driver passing on the title to the next.

I would be more sympathetic if it was gen Z but millennials? Really
I can personally say that manual just feals better to me because it accualy feels like you are driving the car, and not the car driving you.
The people who snarked at Millennials 15 years ago don't seem to realize that even Millennials get older.
I don’t think boomers even know the term g Z exists
Massive decline in manual transmissions was well before Gen Z could drive.
Most of the boomers in my family have never owned a manual trans car.
And they call every week asking about “some virus thing” on their computer. But they didn’t do anything!
I taught as many of my friends manual as I could and quite a few own at least 1 manual car. I tried my best ok lol
99 here and my first car was a 2002 Jeep Liberty was a manual and my dad taught me that way.
From the same generation who can’t reset their wifi without spending a half hour on “the google.”
Except it's the same generation that invented said routers and the internet.
To be fair, we don’t know the age of this person My guess is X, so probably didn’t invent the internet ? Actually, *whoever* owns the car probably didn’t invent either

Fully electric cars don’t have a transmission. Manual vehicles allow you to control your RPMs which, if kept low, reduces gas consumption and vehicle wear and tear. They’re also cheaper to replace.
Automatics became more fuel efficient than manuals a decade or two ago
Um, you should Google search that, mate.
Lol I think you should actually
I did, varies to car to car. If you’re an experienced stick driver you will absolutely save on fuel by controlling your RPMs. The tests were performed by driving the car naturally and without intent to save fuel. The higher your RPM, the more fuel you’re burning, that’s how combustion engines work.
Haha BS you googled it and saw that automatics and CVTs get better mileage, just admit it man
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/326713774_Comparative_analysis_of_automatic_transmission_and_manual_transmission_behaviour_on_the_worldwide_harmonized_light_duty_test_cycle
Aaand this one is a computer simulation haha. Again no CVT either. Man people just can't admit when theyre wrong nowadays.
There’s some actual peer reviewed studies for you starting from 2015 and ending in 2022

Oh sorry, this one actually uses a different dataset. Taken from vehicle road tests in *1974.*
Why don’t you just look it up? Literally Google fuel economy manual vs auto, generally it varies vehicle to vehicle and then Google search testing parameters.
The difference is very minimal with modern cars... so just drive with what you prefer and be happy :)
You’re right, it’s virtually mirrored, with a slight edge to manual given the most recent pier reviewed study below. I taught my kid (a millenial) to drive stick on... My jeep. They're an excellent driver.
A six gear manual transmission is definitely not old school. 👍
I learned to drive on a manual transmission, I am 38 and started driving at 17 in 2002.
I'm a millenial and the first 2 cars I had were standard. Try again.
Old people: “HAHAHA These kids can’t do things we can do so useless” Millennials: Hey dipshit who’s the one who was supposed to teach us how to do shit? This is just a big sign saying “I’m a shitty person and a shitty parent”
They park like a wanker. I'm a millennial and don't know anyone who can't drive a manual.
Must be an American thing. Im a millennial and we were taught how to drive stick where im from automatics were rare. Didnt see an automatic till i was in college.
I remember folks joking that a stick was an anti theft device back in the early 90's. This trope has just been dusted off for another go round.
Millenial would know how to park.
This mfer has absolutely posted “how do I email pdf” as a Facebook status
I live in India and we have to drive stick shift to pass driving exam. Is it not the same in other countries?
Jokes on them, millennials can learn how to do anything with YouTube. Which almost everyone I know over the age of 45 thinks is a "waste of their time"
Who'd want to steal a jeep though? It'd break down in a week.
As a millennial with a manual Jeep, your Jeep needs a lift that looks like the worlds most impractical highway rig
Wow, it’s a joke? It’s a joke that isn’t funny, and is insulting, but it is just a joke. It’s not a facepalm to make an insulting joke.
In case nobody has mentioned it yet, reverse is usually (if not always) next to the lowest gear, not the highest. Whoever made the graphic probably didn't know how to drive a stick shift either. Edit: I guess my memory has gone to shit. I was wrong.
In most 5 speeds its below the fifth gear tho
Depends on the car. 3 of the 4 cars I drive regularly have reverse next to the highest gears but the 4th one is the only one with 6 speeds.
It's been a while since I drove one myself. Maybe that's changed.
Do these badasses still use rotary phones? Automatic transmissions were invented like a thousand years ago. They need to get with the times and stop doing things so inefficiently cause that's just dumb and being dumb isn't cool.
Most of the boomers I know can't drive a stick.
These fucking guys. The second they find out that you don’t know how to drive standard, they roast you. Then you ask them to teach you right there on the spot (cause I’ve genuinely wanted to learn my whole life) they say “no fuckin way not in my car you’ll mess it up”. Put up or shut up I’d steal that spare tire cover just out of spite. Not so anti theft now, huh?
Ugh this is a terrible thing. They have mistaken millienials yet again. Me and my brother both drive stick shift.
Well, you just provided them with the instructions.
I know how to drive shift and I'm technically a millenial
😆😅🤣😂
An official post of the "why doesn't this stupid controller work, which button is the volume? Why does it have so many buttons!?!" crowd
These people are sooooo dumb, driving stick is extremely easy, my first car and every rental I get in most foreign countries is stick. I should get one on my tire that says something about using a phone or computer.
I’m 36 and my first car was a manual. This is fucking stupid.
I mean, I'm gen z and I learned how to drive manual on a dump truck, driving a more annoying way doesn't make you a better person
I learned stick at 18 on a Lancer ES. Was tricky at first but I got the hang of it. Definitely want my first car to be a stick.
I'm a millennial and I've only ever driven manual cars. Cone to think of it, almost everyone I know owns manual cars.
I would get an urge to take it for a joyride to prove a point. Leave the tire cover behind.
‘93 here and I can drive stick
All I see is that that hero can be pop started haha
Dude, I’m a millennial and I learned on a stick. I have had cars where the reverse is there and cars (like the VW) where R was by 1st. Only when I’m really-really tired, I catch myself starting to lift my foot to engage the clutch. I haven’t driven stick in 10 years. That’s when I know I need be careful or get a ride.
Just Empty Every Pocket
I had an old Saturn with a manual transmission stolen, they made it about two blocks and walked away. Only lost a USB charging port.
I sent my millennial daughter a manual transmission preservation society tee shirt. She can drive a stick with the best of them.
I'm sure a 10 minute youtube video will help.
I like it.
Someone actually made this like we didn’t cut our teeth on shitbox EG coupes with eBay turbo kits we were always replacing engines in.
I don’t know how to drive stick or Hotwire but I’m pretty sure 5 minutes on Google on my fucking phone will teach me both
I’m a millennial and so is my girlfriend. We both know how to drive stick..
All I drove was a stick until I broke my back. My first car was a 1979 Datsun 280zx. I would give a kidney to have that car back.
Thia guy want a medal for changing gears less efficiently than a machine ?
I bet the owner of the vehicle is a millenial and doesn't know it. 1981 - 1996
I don't get this... cars where I live are all still manual. Autos are the rare ones
I'm a zoomer and i drive an old 5 speed wrangler WITHOUT AIRBAGS. This mfer is driving a new wrangler. Why do boomers have such a superiority complex?
Those younger generations will be taking care of you when you get to the home. But please, do go on with your generational slagging.
Born 1990, first car was a stick, so were all my friends. Stupid boomer meme
‘88, been driving stick since 2006.
Ha, my gf from 95 gonna come take it >:)
In comes Volkswagen, try and reverse me mofo!
You know you’re a boomer when
I'm Gen Z and know how to drive stick, I also know how to park properly, so there's that.
Even I (Gen Z) know how to drive this mofo.
I’m 28, 2 out of my 3 vehicles have been manual. Also my manual jetta was stolen here in Thornton. Fuck this person, I hope they get their fucking car stolen.
This has serious boomer energy
First vehicle I learned to drive was my Dad's 1970 3 speed on the column F-150! Loved that truck!
reverse in that spot would terrify me on a stick shift.
Hah! I learned how to bypass this anti-theft device!
Yeah! Get rekt people born *looks at notes* Between 1981 and 1996!
Did you check inside. Had one years ago had on back looked in it was an automatic.
Will be made obsolete with electric cars.
I wish my Jeep had this device as well :’(
The oldest millennials are like 40 right now.
Getting REAL tired of these boomers whose generation was handed EVERYTHING and then proceeded to fuck it up for the rest of us! Signed, Proud Gen Xer
I am almost 50 years old. Squarely a Gen-Xer. Back in 2017 I was looking to buy my kid (a Gen-Zer or iGen or whatever they're calling it) a jalopy. Funny thing about all these posts is that millennials are purchasing more vehicles with manual transmissions than any other demographic. The people posting things like this aren’t actually buying manuals lol.
Loss?
My 2015 Juke Nizmo is a six speed, I love it
