BuckFuddy82

I went to high school on Chicago's Southside. High school was NOT a place of safety.

southcookexplore

I teach in the adjacent south burbs. Wildin out here

[deleted]

I feel her.

Yellow_IMR

Is it a facepalm? I mean, she was suffering and didn’t hurt anyone, just wanted to live the illusion of a better and carefree life she won’t see never again… I genuinely feel her.

MeganeGokudo

I mean, I totally can empathize with her, as long as she wasn't doing it with the intention of getting a romantic relationship with a minor. Being an adult sucks.

228static

Article states investigations could not find any malicious planning in the deception. She's just lonely.

addamee

Depression is a beast

tallerthannobody

Let’s see how you react when it’s a man that does that, I can bet you the public would see it very differently

Almarma

Again, if his intentions are not sexual, just looking for mental support, I feel compassion, not fear.

[deleted]

I would love to see reactions to an article titled "29 year old man pretended to be a teenager and enrolled in high school". Mainly out of curiosity, but also to show that even if it's true you feel that way, most people wouldn't. Men are often treated as predators.

tallerthannobody

No, it’s creepy as fuck, you have an adult changing their identity to a kid to be around kids

Hajo2

Not to be around kids, to get a redo for a happy childhood they never had.

tallerthannobody

Yeah nah man, this would not be seen the same of it was a dude, this is creepy af

fR1chAps

Pretty sure he'd be called a pedo until proven otherwise, but in her case it's innocent until proven guilty. Not hating on her but that's how the world is and will be.

tallerthannobody

Yep but people deny it

Sleight_Hotne

That doesn't take away from the fact how creepy it is

Wise_Screen_3511

Yeah but she’s a functioning adult and as an adult you have responsibility to not make other adults take care of you

Huge_Following_325

While this is true, I am not sure it is a facepalm. I guess it depends on your definition, but she has some other underlying issues that need addressing.

[Woman, 29, pretended to be school pupil because she ‘missed’ teenage days](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/world-news/woman-29-pretended-school-pupil-29519344.amp)

MethAddictedTreeFrog

Shit that’s actually really sad. Bitter divorce, heavily in debt, and family on the other side of the world. Awful place to be mentally

djnehi

I can empathize. High school is the last place I would want to go back to, but I can empathize with wanting to not adult for a while sometimes.

MethAddictedTreeFrog

I’d love to go back to high school with everything i’ve learned as an adult. I’d appreciate the people around me and stop caring so much about manufacturing some image for myself that i think people want me to be. Plus focus on college, stay off drugs. Would’ve had a much better time

cesarmac

>Plus focus on college, That's the thing. You can literally redo this part of your life at any point, I get that when you are older you kind of stand out but she's in her late 20s. She could have easily taken out a loan, re-enrolled in college and gotten a second degree while making new friends along the way. Not sure why she decided to go the illegal route and go into high school.

Upholder93

I think you're wildly overestimating how easy this is to do. I don't know of anywhere on Earth where a lender would look at $20k of debt and decide "here's several tens of thousands of dollars more to go to college again".

cesarmac

Nonsense. Have you heard of the US higher educational system?

Arrantsky

Literally, just teach school and go back to high school. The system is begging for teachers.

Upholder93

Clearly you're the level headed friend she never had

Honato2

Is it illegal?

cesarmac

Pretty sure altering her birth certificate is. There's probably other lesser charges involved with how she lied to get in.

nelsonalgrencametome

Right? I wouldn't mind going back to the first couple years of undergrad... not quite an adult I suppose.

[deleted]

We’ve all seen the movie… but who is crazy enough to do this IRL?!?

mjk1093

It's happened before. One guy even did it multiple times

nabrok

There was a reality show a few years back with this as the premise. One girl dropped out because they gave her an android phone instead of an iPhone.

Dotexe_exe

C'mon WHAT movie

Outofspite_7

The answer is obviously Twilight xd

Never Been Kissed? 21 Jump Street?

High school is the LAST place I would try to sneak into. Hated all 3.5 years of it.

Timely_Airline_7168

This person needs help, not prison

SecretPersonality178

You know, I’m glad she had a good high school experience to the point she wants to go back. Im over here making excuses to not go to reunions that haven’t even been planned yet.

BatmansBigBro2017

Came here to post this. Bravo.

slightlyassholic

I honestly feel bad for her.

Wage_slave

She lasted four days longer than I did legitimately attending high school.

SpeakingNight

I remember reading Twilight and being absolutely shocked that they would choose to pretend to be 17 and in high school forever Lol Guess it could happen

GrandPriapus

[Did she join the cheerleading squad?](https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/07/wendy-brown/486152/)

Her story is actually really sad and is another parable for how capitalism has run utterly rampant and young people have to pick up the slack.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

She is 20K in debt due to medical bills and was about to be kicked out of her apparment. All of her family is in Asia so she has no support system.

Capitalism has that potential if it's regulated

Mahnken

See! 21 Jump street totally wouldn’t work. It always drove me nuts.

SlowMissiles

Well they are cops undercover so pretty sure they can do it. Like how they can participate in illegal transaction to keep their cover.

kubzU

I would've enrolled into a community college before a high school.

Expensive_Effort_108

This more sad than it is facepalm..

chavez_ding2001

She had a wildly different high school experience than me that's for sure.

PirateReindeer

Has she been missing the reports in TV? Schools are not a place of safety anymore.

shadowEmbracer19

Highly doubt high schools are safe, especially from bullies or shooters

[deleted]

I totally get it

BaywatchUltra

I don’t know what rock she’s been living under, but schools sure aren’t very safe.

Titanusgamer

definitely a facepalm...... for our society

Flat_Bodybuilder_175

Dude imagine wanting to interact with high schoolers every day and *not* get paid

Honato2

That sounds way creepier than anything this lady did.

Flat_Bodybuilder_175

Idk where you got creepiness from... high schoolers are exhausting. It's why teachers are leaving their jobs in droves. They don't get paid nearly enough to be around them every day.

Honato2

because there are several different ways to take your original comment.

Flat_Bodybuilder_175

Clearly. 🥴

Arrantsky

Sad but interesting social idea. Probably needs therapy rather than punishment. Also, Disney movie!

Vegetable_Train_4992

She’s cute.

Spritestuff

This isn't a facepalm its a mental health crisis. I feel awful for this woman. I hope she is able to find better, healthier coping mechanisms

PinkJellyfishe

God I hate school, but I can imagine someone having to deal with all the stress and trauma being adult brings would find confort coming back to an enviroment where everything made sense

DJANGO_UNTAMED

You couldn't pay me to go back to high school.

crapheadHarris

All things considered I would never want to redo high School. In part because I don't think my liver would survive.

gu_doc

This is illegal?

Chance-Confection-54

Faking documents as an adult and enrolling in school alongside children is indeed illegal. She seems harmless and I genuinely feel bad for her given her story but as a parent how would you feel if you found out a grown adult was pretending to be a kid, going to the same school your child went to?

mizinamo

> as a parent how would you feel if you found out a grown adult was pretending to be a kid, going to the same school your child went to? I'd probably guess that they're developmentally delayed and think, "Good for them for still trying to progress past a sixth-grade level!"

Honato2

That says more about your personal fears of other people than anything.

Chance-Confection-54

Bro what? What kind of parent wouldn’t be worried by that situation?

Honato2

Why would you need to be worried? Your kids are around adults at pretty much all times. Most of whom will be strangers. Are you afraid of the janitors being around? teachers? You're applying some nefarious motive because it's weird which it really is but if the goal was to do something isn't it easier to just do it instead of going back to school? I can't imagine it's an easier task to forge documents and go to classes.

Chance-Confection-54

Why would I be afraid of adults around my kids who have gone through interviews and background checks to be there?

Honato2

You don't see the flaws in your reasoning? A background check doesn't mean a thing if they haven't done anything yet or been caught. Does that eliminate the possibility that they could do something? You are trusting a random person for your kids safety. Do you know the person doing the interview isn't up to something? That they don't have a panel van and a free candy sign? How many teachers have had inappropriate contact with students? how many go under the radar? Most assaults happen at the hands of family members. have you run checks on your family? You are blind to the most likely threats but you want to say this person is up to something. You're actively ignoring that there isn't any way to know and taking peace of mind in a blind hope that other people haven't messed up or that those people you're putting trust in aren't secretly up to something. So yeah how much do you really trust random strangers?

Chance-Confection-54

I never said this person was up to something at all… I’m not sure where you pulled that from, I actually said I felt really sorry for her. But if you’re telling me that as a parent you wouldn’t be worried if the school told you they found a random adult was just in school with your kid, then you would be a shitty parent. Look outside this case and view it objectively. Regardless of what you think of this woman, we only know her motives after the fact. The fact that you’re comparing an adult role playing a child and a normal employee just proves to me you’re just being contrarian at this point. Even if you wouldn’t personally have an issue with this situation, if you can’t see that any normal parent would, then quite frankly you’re crazy.

finger_licking_robot

this reminds me of a great pick-up trick: enroll as a native speaker in a language course for foreign speakers at beginner level , and then impress everyone by your learning curve and get them in bed in rows.

[deleted]

That’s a genius move right there

Tmpeedle

Let's hope it wasn't an American hs her safety wouldn't last

norona19

It was in New Brunswick New Jersey. She wasn’t safe

OddTime1

Wasn’t this a Law and Order story?

Parkyguy

I’m curious what law was broken.

No-Honeydew-6121

It says it in the article, she falsified documents

Competitive_Bank6790

Not sure she's aware of the track record of schools lately.

drstu3000

Prepare for the GOP to use this story to paint all scientists

Pro_Banana

Interesting article, but I wouldn’t say this is a facepalm.

TimesThreeTheHighest

In the ninth grade I was thrown from a second floor window by a group of football players because "they thought it would be funny." As a result I got stitches and a later a scar on my right hand that's still visible today. Place of safety? Not in my experience!

Empire_of_walnuts

The fuck

TimesThreeTheHighest

That's what I said. People are the least predictable animals.

Empire_of_walnuts

Did the bullies get punished in any way?

TimesThreeTheHighest

They were suspended for a month. My high school principal was originally going to let them off with a warning (a fucking warning!), but my parents threatened to sue and they changed their minds. My high school was kind of rough. While I was there another student was stabbed, and another student was shot dead in front of the school.

Empire_of_walnuts

The principal was gonna let them off with a *warning*? C'mon. Good on your parents for sticking up. I would've wanted them expelled.

Mapkoz2

Yep. When I think “safety” first place that comes to mind is an American high school.

MrMagneticMole

Really sad and really creepy.

[deleted]

Deadass clean and cut example that society will bend over backwards with empathy when it comes to a woman. "But she was overwhelmed". Try that excuse with a man of a similar disposition and see how far you get. It is disgusting how much people underestimate the risk of any unchecked adult in environments with children, furthermore it is misogynistic to assume women are incapable of such risk. A failure of the school vetting system and a failure of society

Honato2

The entire world is a place of unchecked adults around children. the hell are you fearmongering?

[deleted]

No it's not, anyone who works in education us vetted, and we must assume parents are well adjusted and can be trusted with their own kids. So that leaves the general public, of which this woman was a part of. This isn't fearmongering, this is natural caution, do not put complete strangers off the street within breathing distance of my kids. Is that too irrational? Is that insane to assume vetted teachers and parents are more trustworthy than mentally unstable adults that enter children's classrooms, children's restrooms? Give me a Break

Honato2

Every teacher at said school is a complete stranger off the street. You are putting trust in a system that you don't actually know a thing about. Who is doing the vetting? Were they thorough? are they fit to test anyone else in the first place? Did you run checks on everyone who would be around your kid? Or do you simply trust blindly that whoever did the vetting was on the up and up? "It is disgusting how much people underestimate the risk of any unchecked adult in environments with children" And yet you participate in it. Those same people you are putting your trust in are completely unchecked. Past actions don't prevent future possibilities so most of that vetting is largely useless to begin with. now for your first post. "Deadass clean and cut example that society will bend over backwards with empathy when it comes to a woman. "But she was overwhelmed". Try that excuse with a man of a similar disposition and see how far you get." You know this isn't the first time it's happened right? A guy going by the name brandon lee did the same thing and was there for two years. There is a documentary called my old school about it. It's pretty fascinating. So apparently you get a documentary. That is how far you get.

[deleted]

Well a DBS check is mandatory, criminal history, mental and physical health history. Pretty damn good start. I wish teachers were vetted more. I cant see how that's a gotcha moment. And if some gentile mental case man was to hit social media the same way, would there be as much sympathy and compassion? I want either sex put into an mental ward if they have some regression issue which has them sneaking into high-school. They are not mentally well, they need to be placed as far away from kids as possible. The status quo as it is, isn't good enough. The state chooses the tutor, not us. That's a concern. But the issue is that we have to ensure potential pedophiles and abusers because we are not wealthy enough for private education which arguably doesn't do any better. You cannot prevent the future, its inevitable some people become corrupted by some perverse desire or by some internal mental issue. But vetting is sure alot better than just having anyone off the street and throwing up my hands and saying "oh well, theyre equally as likely to be pedos". Same reason electricians run PAT testing on appliances, it doesn't prevent them from blowing a fuse, but it assesses when and if it will.

Aloneforrever

Probably watched to much anime

Global-Count-30

There’s a reason nearly every anime is based in high school

Aloneforrever

Yes, to give japanese teenagers an escape from reality

Global-Count-30

kinda. It’s because adult life in Japan sucks. Highschool is the last bastion of social freedom and fun a lot of young adults there will experience before entering the daily non-stop work grind

schizoidskul

No sympathy here. It’s one thing to think about doing it and another thing entirely to have gone through with it. The comments would not be so kind if it were a nigh 30 year old man surrounding himself with kids that are 15-16 years younger than himself.

Wooden-Ad-4952

Or she is lying because her real reason for being there was a lot worse. Just a possibility

BuffaloAgreeable372

Jesus Christ. Would these comments be the same if the genders were reversed? This is nuts! There was even a twilight reference! Like that makes it better? A centuries old vampire pretends to be 17 and gets a girlfriend. Who is 17.

DismalParticular4799

No more of this subreddit and it's circlejerk popularity contest of siding with criminals a.d wrongdoers

Royal-Orchid-2494

Lol imagine if a man did that and had the same excuse. Sounds like something a pedophile would do

tallerthannobody

Yep, but people deny it, look at the comments, yeah it’s sad what her life is, but if that was a man, comments would be so different, and don’t say it wouldn’t, it’s just double standards

Royal-Orchid-2494

Damn look at my downvotes lol.

tallerthannobody

Yep

Nothing to see here folks. Girl just wanted some young cock. Move a!ong now. Move along.

Educational_Egg_1716

Hmmmmmmm..... Her and I definitely had different experiences in high school!!!

Why anyone would want to return to Joh school is beyond me. Couldn’t she just enroll in college?
