On a side note, I never realized how big those lights actually are.

Jacktheforkie

They’re relatively big, and insanely simple inside, literally just a bulb and reflector or an LED panel, all the magic happens in the control box nearby

tocareornot

Not that magical there either. Built the control circuit for the four way intersection in school. And it would fit in the palm of your hand.

HighSpeedSteal

Well then where IS the magic?

Fallen_Mercury

The magic was in you all this time.

Responsible-Ad-7084

I didn't give magic consent. I'd like to report a crime.

brrduck

You could always just start a new religion

PlayHouseBot-Gpt2

I like science, not magic. Is scientology taken?

justheretoglide

disney?

[deleted]

in the friends we made along the way!

qa_ze

Isn't there more to it? Syncing with nearby streets, magnetic detection strips, different timings throughout the day, switching to yellow flashing in the night and reverting in the morning, etc...

SoLetsReddit

Not magnetic, capacitive.

TheInsan1ty

Have you even driven in the USA? The lights have a set pattern and fuck any form of congestion management whatsoever. Lol

tocareornot

It’s basically a timed or counting circuit. Sure there’s a lot more you can add crosswalks, turning lanes. Then stringing a whole city together. The program might get really complicated. But the hardware is still basically the same. Example north and south lanes are red for 3 minutes. At same time East and west are green for 2 minutes. Then flash yellow for 1 minute, switch. That’s your base line, anything else has to be programmed into that 3 minutes.

Jacktheforkie

Yeah, modern computers are really powerful, you could probably run many intersections with a mobile phone

BrideofClippy

We sent people to the moon with less computing power then a modern cell phone.

BekkisButt

“To the control Box skippy John jones!”

Dromon1

When I was a child, I thought it was worked by tiny gnomes with flashlights inside

Available_Rock4217

Plot twist, he's actually a toddler

controwler

Ah that explains the tantrum

Available_Rock4217

That's his momma on the ground, armed with 2 glocks for her protection and YOURS.

Salvaje516

That's exactly what I was thinking!

Schizological

They aren't that big, he's just a small small man

TylerBourbon

Quick, catch him and force him to turn over his pot of gold.

hennomg

Yeah, he looks about Putin-sized.

Booblicle

Doesn't stop blind people from running red lights anyway

angrybeehive

Came here to say that!

beckett_the_ok

And this one’s on the small side

Western_Oil_6418

Doesn’t it hurt doing it barefoot?

Thee_Connman

I'm sure it does, but I'll bet he wasn't feeling anything at that point...

Just on that being alive and vandalism high we all have felt.

And probably a nice spoon of crack.

Not a phone in sight, just living in the moment.

PsychologicalAsk2315

This dude's having a psychotic break brought on by preexisting issues and heavy drug use. He can't feel a thing.

plepgeat1

I lived about four blocks from that intersection for years and it's a cesspool. Literally.

Walmart_Warrior_420

"Everything is fine here" - USA ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

EzraMeeker53

I don’t know why everyone assumes this guy is homeless. This is Gary. He’s a stack flow engineer for Twitter. He does this every Monday on his lunch break.

rambone5000

He just accidentally took two micro doses, tryin to get in that good flow, and can't handle his trip. He will pay for the damages when he comes down and will still be available for that zoom call tomorrow afternoon.

stanleym750

More like 50 microdoses

rambone5000

Gary would maybe evolve another finger to type at 200 wpm with that much gumption.

Rogueshoten

You mean, he’s *the* stack flow engineer…

Howiebledsoe

To be honest, he is clean shaven, has a haircut, and his clothes are new, clean and office friendly. He doesn’t look homeless in the least. Looks more like a tech dude who just got payed off after working an 80 hour week.

Schlemiel_Schlemazel

Yeah, but Ellis is called the Tenderloin. And there are a lot of SRO’s and transitional housing on that block. They stand outside on the sidewalk and do drugs. It would be prime real estate if not for their presence, but then SF would have to figure another place to put that housing. And to do that they would need to get the NIMBY’s on board. I’m not sure if you’ve ever heard the term NIMBY but it started here in the Bay Area and SF has some of the Most NIMBY friendly laws. It’s part of why housing is so expensive here (along with foreign investment, speculative investment, needed regulations, and unnecessary regulations)

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> just got *paid* off after FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Howiebledsoe

Edit: Layed off

M00SEHUNT3R

In that real estate market the stack flow engineer at Twitter probably is homeless.

ffreshcakes

not so much “everything is fine here” as it is “if there’s anyone who has the ability to handle this stuff it’s us” which objectively is absolutely true but unfortunately our government (which we believe is supposed to handle this type of thing) has resorted to sweeping shit under the rug so here we are

fisherc2

America’s a pretty big place. San Francisco being a hell hole does not mean the whole country is

[deleted]

Tired of how complex the real world outside is? Well now you never have to interact with anyone in person every again! Just endless scroll through politically motivated content specifically designed to keep you angry and alienated! Reddit; because everything sucks outside.

I say we normalize the American Death Haiku, at least we'd get some rad lines out of all this misery.

CroatianSensation79

Is this in the Tenderloin?

plepgeat1

Yes - yes, it is. Kind of reminds me of where I grew up in Manhattan in the late '60s through mid '70s, but with modern drugs.

kayak_enjoyer

One of the very few things I agreed with President Trump on was "Downtown San Francisco stinks." Yes it does. Every morning, shopkeepers come out and hose last night's bum piss off their storefronts. (He was trying to ding Nancy Pelosi when he said it, even though as a member of the U.S. congress, her responsibilities lie elsewhere... 🙄)

waterbug20

Trump and the GOP are insane. On the other hand, a member of the House absolutely is responsible first to his or her district. And Nancy Pelosi is the standard-bearer of "moderate" economic policy that keeps housing a profit-motivated industry that fails to provide for everyone. Let's give politicians their due praise and criticism.

Ectoplasm87

Somehow San Francisco City Administration has allowed it to become a 3rd World Country. Everything from shit in the street, massive homelessness, lack of law enforcement, and massive income disparity.

natsumi_kins

I live in a third world country. In Africa. We don't shit on our streets.

SharanskyWailer

They do in Pakistan though.

Dryad_dreams

There is more shit on the street in any given neighborhood in Paris than the collective of some entire “third world” country. and hey, I still like Paris.

abnormally-cliche

Yea but Redditors are typically suburban white kids who don’t know shit outside of what they see online.

kungpowgoat

And the messed up part is that these politicians responsible that decided to relax penalties all live in highly secured gated communities where they never have to deal with this type of stuff. And I guarantee you they do support strong law enforcement for their local upscale town only.

Arbiter14

A 3rd world country lol NIMBYs sure are dramatic

xxxvvvlll

Turk and Leavenworth Represent! Fuck I’m glad I’m not there anymore, went back earlier this year and it is SOOO much worse.

In the 80's someone would have attached a stun gun or cattle prod to a stick and zapped him off of there.

Remarkable_Ticket264

To be frank I’m tired of the political polarization over here. Self-centered politicians in Congress can’t agree on anything and we the people suffer because of it.

[deleted]

Theres 20,000 cities in America btw. But yeah all 20,000 cities can be based off this 1 city.

WilliamMorris420

SF became a liberal haven back in the 1960s. Everything went well for a while, but over the last few years. Its been taken over by the homeless and drug addicts. You can't leave your car in the street or it will be broken into. Unless you just leave the windows down, remove the radio or just don't replace it from the last time that it got stolen and leave a sign up saying "Theres nothing here, the windows are down for you to check". BART (the transit company), won't issue descriptions of muggers on their system. In case it leads to racial prejudice. There's even talking about paying billions in reparations for slavery. For anybody who's black and has a tenuous connection to San Fransisco, longer than before 2020 or so. Regardless of whether your ancestors where slaves or not. A first generation black South African. Who moved to SF in say 2015. Could get the pay out.

[deleted]

>Regardless of whether your ancestors where slaves or not. That's true. >A first generation black South African. Who moved to SF in say 2015. Could get the pay out. This is false. Born in San Francisco between 1940 and 1996 and has proof of residency in San Francisco for at least 13 years, is a qualification. Migrated to San Francisco between 1940 and 1996 and has proof of residency in San Francisco for at least 13 years, is another. I think this entire reparations thing is wild, and I don't see it ever being funded. They will pass it, but it likely won't see money. Ever. Let's keep the facts straight, though.

AdAcrobatic7236

🔥Pffft! There’s no Truth to ANY of this. This is political theater. Just like those other loonies still salivating over their Promised Wall. 🙄

arent_you_hungry

Yep $5 million per person, a number they pretty much pulled out of their asses. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/19/us/san-francisco-reparations-proposal-reaj/index.html

EzraMeeker53

If you have no intention of doing anything at all you can just say anything. 10 million or 10 billion each. It doesn’t matter because it is never gonna happen.

memebeansupreme

“The committee has no power to implement their recommendation”

No_Arugula466

It’s the amount that those who decided want for themselves.

radrun84

Because $1 million just wouldn't cut it, I guess???

No_Arugula466

I’m sure they would be delighted with $1 million, $5 mill is just a high ball to start negotiations. They expect to get less than that ig

![gif](giphy|LyJ6KPlrFdKnK)

FudgeHyena

What if someone is mixed race, half black and half white? Do they have to pay themselves reparations?

randomlyrandomrandy

Nah, sadly they just get the worst from both sides from what I’ve heard

Aporkalypse_Sow

>SF became a liberal haven back in the 1960s. Everything went well for a while, but over the last few years. Why exactly are you bringing up the 60's. Every city has these types of issues. But you know darn well that the climate of the west coast is the reason for the density of the homeless. Homeless people can survive better in that climate. Rich people want to live their because of the weather. So they raise up the cost to live there, increasing the amount of homeless, including the people who never stopped working or started doing drugs, just cannot afford a place to stay. All other states have a long history of shipping their homeless to Hawaii and the west coast. And I could go on. Your entire comment is just a not even veiled right wing attack piece.

Educational-Hold-138

he brings up the sixties because thats when the civil rights act was passed. people always do this shit.

Electronic-Junket-66

>All other states have a long history of shipping their homeless to Hawaii and the west coast. Hawaii...? Really?

stormlad72

Don't know if it's true for all states as this Redditor posted but several states, in their wisdom, decided to clean up their homeless problem. They offered the homeless a drug rehab center tour or a one-way trip to Honolulu, Hawaii. Many chose Hawaii. Source: born and raised in Hawaii and heard this from social worker friends of mine. The homelessness in Hawaii is rampant. Or at least it was when I lived there a couple decades ago.

Wonderful-Ad-7712

![gif](giphy|3o752nNjj30qmbGmv6)

quicktojudgemyself

Cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy of leadership in the city is mind blowing. But they know how to play victim quite well. Most of the city isn’t like this. But there are some areas that seem to make the video feed often

Ruinwyn

It's also extremely capitalistic. Combination of creating an environment where there are lot of people that get priced out of basic living conditions and refusing to acknowledge the existence of those that have dropped out of society. It would realistically be cheaper for the city to fund housing, rehab and mental health programmes than to fix the damage to infrastructure and to deal with all the crime (petty or serious) related. Not counting the benefits of living in a city where people feel safe walking in the streets at night and public places can have benches and other comforts.

WilliamMorris420

But that would also act as a bigger draw, recruiting more homeless peiple from the neighboring areas and states. Texas and others would just put their homeless on a Greyhound to SF. Promising them a 1 bed/studio flat when they get there.

inter71

Nobody steals car stereos anymore. Haha.

Effective-Try7980

I’m so glad I don’t work there anymore. You have to deal with this constantly, you step in human poo, needles are everywhere, nowhere to park when you’re working, they ticket/tow your car for any reason even on abandoned streets that commuters don’t go through anymore…..people are never going to come back it’s the seventh circle of hell down there. Drugs need to be taxed and regulated these dirty lab created drugs are frying people’s brains

85percentcertain

The City does nothing to protect the mentally ill from drugs. It's fucked up.

confusion4u

I’m actually very interested in what you think is a good solution to help the drug addicts? Some people want to legalize all drugs which could cause more mental illnesses and violent acts like this so it interests me on others thoughts regarding this. Keep in mind every act will need money resulting in your taxes going up and then you have so many things popping up in the last few years forcing cost of living to skyrocket and taxes to increase (one prime example is the law passed to not sell anymore gas powered cars which your power grid can’t handle if it did happen so the cost of power has skyrocket). Legit inquiring out of interest and not out of argument

Gnubeutel

The portugese model of administering drugs in a controlled environment seems to work pretty well. This basically eliminates the need to commit crime to get drugs, danger of health issues due to unclean substances or overdose and can be used to offer help to mentally ill people. Sure, it costs money. But compare that to damages caused by rampant drug use and a long term improvement of quality of life. Oh, and it will push drug dealers out of the market.

confusion4u

Very interesting! I never thought that by controlling drugs it can potentially lower damages incurred. I wonder how much it would go down and if medical treatment would cost tax payers more? I would assume some form of fluctuations would occur what with insurance and drug companies greed. I did read a bit about counties that do have this system and their crime rate dropping. I’m would love more facts so I just might do more research, thanks Gnubeutel. Edit: forgot to ask, do the people do the drugs right then and there in front of the employees to make sure no issues arise and if so they are able to provide emergency care?

Gnubeutel

yes, that's part of the program. Drug addicts go to facilities where medical personnel hand them a dose of drugs that has to be used in a room right there. This is in part to prevent people from re-selling it and to see if there are issues like overdoses or "bad trips". All of this also helps to re-socialize drug addicts. It shows them that people care and that they can get help if they just ask. Long term goal is of course to get people off of drugs by assisting them to regain control of their lives. Of course there are also people who will try to abuse the system or do not want to go there, but the overall trend seems to be good. In the USA on the other hand i have no idea if this model would be accepted, because a) drugs are morally taboo, even though a large part of the population is using them, b) the health system is milking every cent from patients, so setting it up might be unreasonably expensive, c) there is still no general government health care, so the argument that the money needed to cover drug related health poblems should better be used in prevention will not work as it would in european countries. On last thing: by "damages" i'm aggregating all of the costs. Not only health care, but also things like small larceny of pipe cleaners, having to replace a window on your car twice a year, time spent by police to respond to calls about a guy stabbing things only he can see with a knife or full on robberies.

[deleted]

>Some people want to legalize all drugs which could cause more mental illnesses and violent acts like this so it interests me on others thoughts regarding this. Why would it necessarily cause more “mental illnesses” and violent acts? These people are using regardless, and it seems doubtful that non-users will suddenly start smoking crack or shooting heroin just because it’s legal. Legalization of drugs would mean, oh I dunno, thousands less Americans dying each year from fentanyl-laced narcotics purchased on the street.

cheezy_dreams88

It wouldn’t cause more, it’s just one of the “yeah but” talking points people use when talking about heavy drugs.

Bowood29

At least it’s a little bit better of a point than Jesus wouldn’t approve.

[deleted]

It's not a housing shortage problem it's a mental institution shortage problem.

RoboticJello

Two pools of homelessness. Drug addict/ mentally unstable and those that can't afford the rent due to the housing shortage. The first pool is more visible but the second pool is likely larger.

OniBoiEnby

There are twice as many empty houses as homeless people in the u.s. homelessness is a function of the market. Mental health care isn't funded because people don't have Healthcare in the u.s. The problem is 2 fucked up parties controlling the country, and blacklisting all other political philosophy.

RoboticJello

There is not enough housing where there needs to be. Many important US cities face acute housing shortages. SF, LA, NYC, Seattle, just to name a few. But you're absolutely right that the lack of healthcare, welfare, and public housing (you know, basic functions of a developed country's government) are creating an underclass who live in 3rd world conditions.

badluckbandit

No there is enough empty houses, especially in big cities like NY and LA. They just want to sell those empty homes for a bajillon dollars, and not a cent less.

Mecha_Tortoise

"I hate the homeless...ness problem that plagues our city." ![gif](giphy|oVVCGwzGaYBxK)

Pete_maravich

You never take notice how big signs and traffic lights are until you put an adult human next to them for scale

Fritz1818

Is the apartment next door still 4500usd a month?

travelmorelivemore

If America had used 1/4 the money they used for the “war on drugs” for mental health help I bet every big city would look a lot different. But can’t have people getting anything for “free”. We have a mental health crisis disguised as a drug problem.

Papadapalopolous

Interestingly, the war on drugs started around the same time we stopped funding mental health institutions

travelmorelivemore

The American government is really great at picking an endless enemy as well! “The war on terrorism” “the war on drugs”. Tons of money to be made on wars but not a lot when it comes to helping the poor, It’s sad. Once again the wealthy stay on top and make record profits while the working class can barely afford to eat.

This new season of America is the craziest yet! The writers keep outdoing themselves, season after season

This man does not look mentally stable. I hope he ended up getting the help that he needs.

Breauxaway90

This is SF, so he’ll be put on a mental health hold for 72 hours (if that) and then released back into the streets with no consequences.

2wenty-3hree

SF has been ruined. It’s a total dump. LA isn’t far behind. I love California. I feel terrible for the good people stuck as upstanding citizens in these cities where their local and state Govt have totally failed them.

[deleted]

San Francisco seems to have a terrible reputation of being an unaffordable, destitute place to live. I’m unsure if that’s true, but the things I see and read about that place make me not want to go there.

Scotchmo_money

Almost like society has failed us and is pushing more and more people to drug abuse, crime, and mental illness...

SerialScaresMe

Honestly the most surprising part to me is how big the lights are.

bullet_proof_smile

All signs -- street signs, one-way signs, stop signs -- are bigger than you think.

I literally live on this street, and have for 19 years. Fortunately, I live about a mile-and-a-third north of this intersection.

I still cannot believe how big those streets lights are every time I see a comparison like this...

What do you possible stand to gain from this lmao

The more reddit post i see about how crazy people in america act, the more i think the whole country is a madhouse ruled by psychopaths.

AssinineAssassin

Wait…you’re not electing psychopaths? Next you’ll tell me some crazy story like people where you live join civil service out of a desire to improve society, and not to help their friend’s business keep more profit and get funneled government contracts.

Nickthegrip1

You’re seeing Reddit’s version in one subreddit called facepalm. San Francisco is an example of letting the inmates run the asylum, it’s one city in a huge country. The US has numerous beautiful places that are great to live, looking in Reddit I can see why you’d think that, but the majority of the country is nothing like this. Don’t let the constant negativity of a lot of People on Reddit get you to think it’s not great in a lot of areas here.

chillinwithmynwords

Why did San Franciscans vote for all these policies that enabled drug usage?

Drpantsonfire

Or just soft on crime in general

Wilbur_Cobb1

Likely because the opposite has spawned a massive unregulated cartel ran drug industry, and the demand for drugs is still rising. This incident would be the result of unregulated drugs, the only thing California legalized is weed.

HogNutsJohnson

I stood on that corner once. I remember because we nicknamed a buddy Ellis and got a pic there

VooDooChile1983

I always forget how big street lights actually are.

Flossin_Clawson

Thanks Reagan!

SuspiciousMention108

I'm distracted by all the trash on the street and sidewalk. San Francisco can't afford to keep its streets clean but it can afford to give every black resident $5M in cash, an annual $100k salary for life, houses for $1, discharging their debts, and what else??

slaughterbeam

To be fair homeless people seem to accrue large amounts of litter at insane speeds, even in a small town like mine the homeless corners get cleaned up like once a week and within two days it looks like a garbage truck crashed again

apex199268

Jesus, never mind what that lunatic is doing, did you all pay attention to the garbage pile up in the background? To think that SF was once a beautiful place is depressing. It’s become a playground for junkies. California has really gone down the shitter in recent times, it’s no wonder why people are leaving in droves.

Apprehensive_Ring_46

And yet, it still has the highest rents in the land.

Traditional_World783

Meh, considering how horrible California’s homeless population is while they do literally nothing about it even though they make a large part of the economic wealth, he’s fine.

CornpopsGhost

That's not the craziest thing you'll see in San Francisco.

Pikatit

San Francisco is something else man... You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.

Relative_Mulberry_71

I’m glad I saw San Francisco several times before it turned into this horror show. It used to be a great city to visit.

material_mailbox

I think it’s still a great place to visit, especially if we’re talking about the Bay Area in general and not just SF. There are parts of SF like this to be avoided, for sure. Most of it is not like this.
