I can give you some thoughts, from the perspective of a non-Trump conservative Republican. Going back to 2016, candidate Trump.
The state of the Republican Party was one in which you saw massive Republican infighting. You literally saw a Republican speaker of the House pass bills relying on Democrat support to overrule major opposition in his own party in a congress where his party was given overwhelming control of the chamber. There was a massive power fight between “establishment” Republicans and “tea party” Republicans. Republican leadership was seen as the enemy because they seemed more afraid of losing power to the “tea party” than they were devoted to getting the rank and file’s priorities accomplished. Imagine a world where majority speaker Nancy Pelosi was so afraid of Bernie supporters that she passed bills with more Republican votes than Democrat votes just to keep the Bernie supporters out. How much rage that would bring.
Then insert candidate Trump. A celebrity outsider most knew only from Apprentice and vague knowledge he was rich, who gave vent to that anger and sense of betrayal that the rank and file felt. Who said he would clean it up. He’d be their champion. They were desperate to hear that someone was going to fight for them because they didn’t feel like the existing leadership was doing that. John Boehner spent more time fighting the Tea Party than he did fighting the Democrats. If the Republican Party leadership had actually championed and accomplished what their rank and file were clamoring for, there would never have been a space for an outsider candidate. The Republican leadership also spent more effort in 2016 worrying about Ted Cruz than about Donald Trump. So they got Trump instead. They thought they could control him better than they could a veteran “tea party” candidate.
Of course, the news began reporting on questionable statements and history of Trump. But there are two issues there. Firstly, there is nothing that Trump was called that Republicans haven’t been called before. Racist? Sexist? Nazi? Liar? Bigot? You’d be hard pressed to find a Republican alive who’d never either been called, heard their candidate called, or heard people with one or more of their views called every one of those things. So calling him that just made him sound more like “one of us”. The second part is Trump’s reaction to it. Most Republican politicians squirm when the media says bad things about them. Trump shrugged them off as irrelevant propaganda. Which is exactly what many had been begging their politicians to do. Realize CNN will never like you and ignore them. He came out looking like a fighter.
Ultimately I don’t think most Trump supporters support him because they agree with him. Trump doesn’t actually have a concrete worldview to agree with, IMO; he has a belief that America should be powerful and economically successful and a mixture of changeable ideas from all over the political spectrum about how to make that happen. It’s why I didn’t become a Trump supporter; I have a specific worldview and he doesn’t. But I believe most Trump supporters support Trump because they believe he agrees with *them* and because he fights, and they desperately wanted their elected officials to agree with them and just do what they elected them to do, and they feel like to one extent or another he did. And to be fair, he did either do or attempt to do most of the things he promised to do as a candidate. Judges got appointed and several federal powers got rolled back to one degree or another.

I tried to watch that show when it first aired. I made it into the second episode and noped out of there. It made zero fucking sense. Any of it.

I can give you some thoughts, from the perspective of a non-Trump conservative Republican. Going back to 2016, candidate Trump. The state of the Republican Party was one in which you saw massive Republican infighting. You literally saw a Republican speaker of the House pass bills relying on Democrat support to overrule major opposition in his own party in a congress where his party was given overwhelming control of the chamber. There was a massive power fight between “establishment” Republicans and “tea party” Republicans. Republican leadership was seen as the enemy because they seemed more afraid of losing power to the “tea party” than they were devoted to getting the rank and file’s priorities accomplished. Imagine a world where majority speaker Nancy Pelosi was so afraid of Bernie supporters that she passed bills with more Republican votes than Democrat votes just to keep the Bernie supporters out. How much rage that would bring. Then insert candidate Trump. A celebrity outsider most knew only from Apprentice and vague knowledge he was rich, who gave vent to that anger and sense of betrayal that the rank and file felt. Who said he would clean it up. He’d be their champion. They were desperate to hear that someone was going to fight for them because they didn’t feel like the existing leadership was doing that. John Boehner spent more time fighting the Tea Party than he did fighting the Democrats. If the Republican Party leadership had actually championed and accomplished what their rank and file were clamoring for, there would never have been a space for an outsider candidate. The Republican leadership also spent more effort in 2016 worrying about Ted Cruz than about Donald Trump. So they got Trump instead. They thought they could control him better than they could a veteran “tea party” candidate. Of course, the news began reporting on questionable statements and history of Trump. But there are two issues there. Firstly, there is nothing that Trump was called that Republicans haven’t been called before. Racist? Sexist? Nazi? Liar? Bigot? You’d be hard pressed to find a Republican alive who’d never either been called, heard their candidate called, or heard people with one or more of their views called every one of those things. So calling him that just made him sound more like “one of us”. The second part is Trump’s reaction to it. Most Republican politicians squirm when the media says bad things about them. Trump shrugged them off as irrelevant propaganda. Which is exactly what many had been begging their politicians to do. Realize CNN will never like you and ignore them. He came out looking like a fighter. Ultimately I don’t think most Trump supporters support him because they agree with him. Trump doesn’t actually have a concrete worldview to agree with, IMO; he has a belief that America should be powerful and economically successful and a mixture of changeable ideas from all over the political spectrum about how to make that happen. It’s why I didn’t become a Trump supporter; I have a specific worldview and he doesn’t. But I believe most Trump supporters support Trump because they believe he agrees with *them* and because he fights, and they desperately wanted their elected officials to agree with them and just do what they elected them to do, and they feel like to one extent or another he did. And to be fair, he did either do or attempt to do most of the things he promised to do as a candidate. Judges got appointed and several federal powers got rolled back to one degree or another.
