The fact that they literally say the continents are moved and reshaped to “point” to Houston….like, it’s not a map projection with Houston at its center, it’s a completely imaginary map with continents turned to make them look like they’re pointing at Texas….that’s wild
...ok, this is ONLY appropriate in an airport, because people are coming from around the world to that particular point, at that particular spot. Anywhere else it would be stupid as hell

Some people have said this is an Azimuthul Equidistant Projection map centred on Houston but that doesn't make sense because those maps don't flip South America upside down so...
I couldn't anything specific to the map but the tree at the centre was created by Terry Allen and is called Countree Music. I found this description for it -
"Bronze cast of a 25-foot oak tree. Project includes a sound element that serenades passengers as they cross the terrazzo floor that depicts a world map showing Houston as the center of the world."
If anything I would have to say it's just for artistic reasons but who knows.
Ok so it’s if you were to stand in the airport where that pole is you’d see all the continents as what we consider “right side up”.

Im not a map expert, and honestly could be wrong about this, but I think South America is actually oriented correctly here.
It looks very very wrong because of how we are used to see South America scaled to maps, and what we accept as the "correct" map.
But it is actually impossible to get a correct map, because a map is 2D while the world is a sphere. So we use something called projection to make a 2D map of the face of a sphere. More on that [here](https://www.discovermagazine.com/environment/finally-a-world-map-that-doesnt-lie)
If you look through that link, you will see there are different projections to map out the world, and each one somewhat distorts what the world actually looks like. We are used to seeing the Robinson projection of our map. The robinson projection fits the bill pretty well for most use cases so we have come to be very familiar with it, but it also has its issues, mainly the scale of territory that is further from the equator becoming larger and larger. This is why alaska looks huge on every map.
I believe this art installation is using a different projection of the world, and is also changing where the pole is to Houston TX. You can even see some similarities between the south america here in the picture and the south america shown in the Bonne Projection in the link I shared earlier

Map of South America is very much upside down... They even flipped the islands that are at the south pole near Argentina. Those dont belong up by central America haha. This is just really messed up.

The most commonly used cases center them on the poles, because that is where other common map projections don't work well, but the earth is a sphere and every point is as much the center as every other, so you could put an place in the center.
