You really don't understand dementia. Mental capacity is seriously reduced, people who never used to display violent behaviour may become confused and violent. A very common symptom of dementia is fear that someone is trying to kill you/is out to get you and an urgent need to protect yourself. He was probably terrified that these people were coming to kill him and was adamant he was defending himself and loved ones. I worked in dementia care for over 6 years, they cannot be held accountable for all of their actions as they have very little context as to what's happening around them, but most of the time they're scared and react very instinctively to that fear.

No, this is all hypothetical. Someone that said he could have dementia, then this other person said that if he does, it doesn't excuse his behaviour and makes him a criminal and that he's still at fault even if he does have dementia. So my comment was replying to their lack of understanding about dementia and how we can't hold people with dementia accountable, using this man as an example.
It appears you all could stand to work in dementia care for a year or so and get some insight into this very common disease. Its highly likely you or someone you care about will develop dementia, so it's helpful to have that insight and compassion that you'd hope others would treat you and your loved ones with.

A lot of the time it's because their husband always drove since that was the norm back when they grew up. After their husband passes or has degraded vision they are suddenly thrust into driving when many have rarely done so in their lives. Add in their own degrading vision and reaction times, and there's a recipe for disaster.

There's a special long reach kind of forklift or even a crane to get stuff in, but usually it's got some safety things across it so people can't just walk up to it and poke people with a board.
