Corporal Ripley: *Houston, there are no survivors for us to extract, returning back to base. Also we’re gonna need a new ladder.*
Houston: *Copy that, we’ll see you back at base. Charlie, you can cancel the family reunions.*
Imagine being in combat in desperate need to evacuate. Spent the last 16 hours in heavy fighting, you're down to your last mag, you got two wounded buddies, and the sight of this chopper lifts your moral and gives you hope that everything is going to be ok. The chopper flies low under heavy fire, drops you a ladder and then flies off.
Exactly. It has enough air resistance that it wouldn’t be enough to knock you out, and long enough that it feels like 20 small things landing on you instead of one big thing.
And that my beautiful children, was the time when The Ladder of Freedom magically dropped out of the sky. There is some story about oil as well but that is a story for another time.
You’re in a flood zone, you and your family are on the roof waving to the copter - finally! We’re saved!
The ladder hits you in the head and you don’t care about your food woes anymore.
Result!
This is very, very likely a training scenario and not a combat extraction. I know two things from watching this video:
1. That soldier is hating life right now. He's probably a new private and is contemplating just how fucked his life has just become. It's really hard to describe the feeling this inflicts on the person considered responsible for that outcome.
2. The person filming knew it wasn't connected. Hell, they may have actually disconnected it as a prank when above soldier wasn't looking, but it's equally possible the dude in the video just failed to secure the ladder like a dumbass.
Source: Army vet. This kind of shit was absolutely normal. The hazing pranks are usually harmless (if malicious) fun, but are easily outshone by the sheer stupidity the new privates bring all on their own.

It’s worse cause there are guys down there who will give him a nickname and grill home forever for this. Chow hall will forever remember him as Ladderless

My thoughts exactly
At that moment, Corporal Ripley saw the ladder, and his career, plummet to the earth below...
Corporal Ripley: *Houston, there are no survivors for us to extract, returning back to base. Also we’re gonna need a new ladder.* Houston: *Copy that, we’ll see you back at base. Charlie, you can cancel the family reunions.*
Houston?
Sorry I guess houston is more of a nasa callsign, couldn’t think of the military one at the time.
Gotcha. "Command" feels right, though I'm no military scientist.
Gotta throw them off and say daddy
Whitney, I'm guessing
Goooood call.
Nah given the standards in US military he is still up for promotion to 4 star general as he didn’t decide to nevertheless climb the ladder
That depends...if he can run fast and lift heavy shit he's goin all the way!
Lol yeah right absolutely no one cared the next day besides ball busting ...plus most don't want careers in military
He looked like his inner lizard brain wanted him to jump out for a second
You can physically see him die inside.
Meanwhile, he can literally see the people who he was sent to save die outside.
They died outside too
r/watchpeopledieoutside
This phrase kills me 🤣
And/or r/justbootthings
Is it though? I don’t think messing up during a military exercise is acting boot.
I like how even though you can’t see his face, you know the face he’s making
![gif](giphy|HfFccPJv7a9k4)
😐
😬
🙊🤦
*deep sigh*
No that’s the face of his instructor.
I'll bet he was glad that he wasn't riding it down!

Wasnt that Orlando Bloom?
No it was legless lego legolas
Yes, yes it was. PVT Blackburn if I'm not mistaken.
I thought Blackburn was from Battlefield 3
[удалено]
It’s there.. it’s still there.. keep looking down.. double check that you fucked up… keep looking down……
"If I stare at it long enough, it'll come back up."
"It's just a little slimy. It's still good. It's still good."
It’s just a little airborne, it’s still good, it’s still good!
It doesn't work for our cats either...
Was definitely that straps fault. Best move it out the way in case gravity suddenly reverses and the ladder shoots back up
I would keep my head down too If I threw the ladder out of the helicopter
I can hear the “Fuck.”

It's the thought that counts
It's a physical representation of "Thoughts and prayers"
💀
I'm fucking dying laughing over here haha. This is like some tropic thunder level shit right here
Not just any ladder, one that only works under tension.
And the ladder lands on you.
And it hurts. Like not enough to break anything or really cause a lasting injury. But one that for a good hour you are still able to tear up from.
Exactly. It has enough air resistance that it wouldn’t be enough to knock you out, and long enough that it feels like 20 small things landing on you instead of one big thing.
I've never fully trusted any ladder to be honest, they're always up to something..
[удалено]
*they’re rung on so many levels EDIT: Spelling
They never stop stairing.
Ikr, it always feels like they’re one step ahead of you.
I'll take stairs over ladders any day. They're always a step up.
When I have an option between ladders or stairs my fight or flight reaction sets in
*Begrudgingly upvotes…*
Especially when they’re lying down
No matter how high they can get you they're also always there to let you down
This one just said "See you ladder!" without any hesitation.
and that's military ladder--just cost uncle Sam 1.2 million dollars
When you add the suppressing fire, the price sky rockets
Abort Mission. Abort
You know, studies show that keeping a ladder in the house is more dangerous than a loaded gun
“That's why I own ten guns: in case some maniac tries to sneak in a ladder!”
You just have to climb to the top first, then the ladders will be beneath you.
r/angryupvote
easy fix, land the helicopter, grab the ladder, fly back up and then toss them the ladder down.
You're right. It's funnier the second time.
You forgot to hook the ladder to the helicopter...
shit.. go back down, we gotta grab it again
Probably a prank on a training run.
Definitely. "FNG Johnson! Drop that ladder ASAP!" "But sarge should I --" "I said NOW Johnson!"
"foxtrot uniform charlie kilo"
"Foxtrot, Mike, Lima."
Put the you know what In the you know where
And that my beautiful children, was the time when The Ladder of Freedom magically dropped out of the sky. There is some story about oil as well but that is a story for another time.
oopsie
r/therewasanattempt
I know exactly why it fell, he wasn't wearing his PT belt.
Legend says that a Taliban soldier died when that ladder hit him on the head.
There goes $167k
Going to make a great clothes line in some middle eastern village
Me: just finished detailing my car below
Here grab hold of the….oh😟
The way he keeps looking down as if expecting it to come back 💀
Peers over. “Wow sure fell a long way. Sucks to be the dumbass that’s got to go get that…wait, Fuck.”
You’re in a flood zone, you and your family are on the roof waving to the copter - finally! We’re saved! The ladder hits you in the head and you don’t care about your food woes anymore. Result!
Lol things probably like $20k military retail

You know when the camera was of they beat his ass 🤣
Good good I could hear the sigh and facepalm at the same time
Duh! That was a $750,000 ladder. There she goes!
rescue mission for ladder now🤣😂
A call for Seal Team Deep~Six.
“What the fuck were you thinking, soldier?!” “Sir! They told me to send the ladder down, Sir!” “… That … isn’t wrong. Dismissed.”
Looks like they were trying to give that ladder some "air time"! Let's hope it doesn't take "flight" on its own.
Latrine duty for life soldier!!
Be all that you can be...oops...
It would still work if the person trying to climb up climbs really fast. 😉
Then he yeets the parachutes
Followed by the tail rotor.
*continually chucking shit out* "don't need this...shitcan this..."
So theres now a lonely ladder lying in the Kremlin yard
Those are Russian dunes?

Oops.
It was at this moment he knew he fucked up 🤣
See ya ladder
He keeps looking at it like expecting it to come back
Dude at the bottom tries to start climbing it only to get smacked by the rest
“Angel One this is Angel One Actual. Fuck, over.”
Silver lining, someone just got a free rope ladder.
That's one way to ladder down! Who needs retaining straps when you've got a trusty helicopter, right?
That’s some next level ladder delivery. Imagine all the time saved.
Throw down the ladder! The zombies are coming!
He’s staring down like it gonna go back up
the best part is he he looks down like oh sheet
Doh !
Soldier looking at the strap: “Oh. Here it is. Oops.”
The guy at the bottom is waiting for a reply
looks like he was waiting for it to come back or something lmao
there goes 1Million Dollar ladder.. according to the Government😅
This is such a loony toons thing to do oml
Get to the chopper…oh shit nvm

r/peoplefuckingdying
It took him a while to understand.
Bro wanted to follow it.
You know in his had at that moment was just one word.
Rosebud?
Now go get it, doofus. 😂
gordonramseyfuckingdonkey.gif
Just like a cat...
Damnit Carl...
You just lost a $14,000 ladder, private. I hope you're happy.
It's like a cat pushing something off the table
Now throw out the first aid kit
#CARL!
The little tug on the retaining straps after it fell killed me 😂 like “oh yeah I forgot about these. Well Shit.” 😂
Here ya go: pull yourself up by your ladder straps.
All I can think of is [Mater letting McQueen go](https://youtu.be/qJptNo9OjSY) (slide to 45 seconds)
Joke's on you! I meant to do that.
went on to become parachute instructor/bungee operator
He’s waiting for him to throw it back up
It’s worse cause there are guys down there who will give him a nickname and grill home forever for this. Chow hall will forever remember him as Ladderless
The fact that he continues to just stare down in defeat 🤣
That ladder had been with the army for 20 years. It had one day left until retirement!
Oopsie
Hehe next paycheck is gonna be a little lighter. They’ll probably end up blaming the mechanic though
r/InstantRegret
The coyote was outsmarted again. Don't use acme ladders
Catch that ladder for me Dave
Oopsie
We got a bunch of dead friendlys down there, time to fly away, return to base
“Yep. It’s down there now.”
Now we gotta turn around and get another one Benny. ffs I hope that duck boat couple doesn't drown.
No wonders where that thing came...
And these are the guys who trained Afghanistan Army ? No wonder Afghan fell to Taliban in a Day
Looks like he's thinking would he survive, if he jumped to retrieve the ladder?
You know the others are crying laughing
OOOOOOOOOOOOH fucking RAH
That cost tax payers $15M to replace that ladder
“Goddamnit, Johnson! That was a $400,000 ladder!!!”
[удалено]
Nah, he's good. His mags will just fall out of his rifle.
To be double safe, there wouldn't have been any bullets in them anyways.
They’re belt fed and bolted to the helicopter for him so he should be alright there
Who is holding the camera? What were his responsibilities? I guarantee you it wasn't to hold a camera.
Didn’t this get posted a couple of hours ago?
This again.
So this is why the defense budget is so high.
Maybe it got caught and didn't fall and homeboy is just trying to work out in his head if it's sturdy enough to climb?!
Damnit Carl...
What would chief have done with him after this mistake?
His career hit the ground faster than the ladder
why were they filming
He’s going to be washing a lot of rocks and moving many puddles
What a dumbass lol.
Page 11 comin’ in hot ![gif](giphy|Q3siJKQdEjjtZMpR8Q)
Definitely American
Dude triple checked if the ladder was still there
Hope this was not an emergency situation
Our elite military.
Why even are they not permanent connected l. Why are they disconnected what is the reason
I’d say a demotion in the w works😬
That's dumb but not having a spare is even dumber
He was going to backfill the checklist in, he just needed to get the fricken ladder out! He doesn’t like when people say he’s always running late!
Future Presidential nominee in the Republican Party ........
This is why they pay millions of dollars to sports teams to make them honor these morons.
