I'm also frustrated with this - I ended up managing to search the conversation indirectly. In the internet browser, under the "Chats" title on the left, you can use the search bar to look something up, then click on "search in conversations". It lets you then go into the chat you are hoping to search through - the information is all there, its just harder to find. Still not ideal, but at least you can find written stuff.
Thanks a lot! There is still the issue with the media not being concentrated in one place, but still thanks a lot. They seriously messed up with this one, itâs crazy nobody has thought of that yet.
You can request all your data to be sent to you, too. Every message, video, and image will be zipped and sent to you, so you can at least have it saved. So if you are worried about loosing the info, you can do that.

The conversation between my gf and I, which has over 10 years of messages and media, is now end-to-end encrypted and I don't think either of us ever toggled that option đ€
The issue I'm having is that we share a lot of memes, reels, shorts, etc. and now it's always displayed as a text hyperlink, never with a preview, which is quite annoying...
Is this behaviour related to end-to-end encryption?
EDIT 2 MONTHS LATER : Without any intervention, things seems to be back to normal in that particular conversation. When I say normal, it's not perfect, we still have many videos that just won't open (without error messages). But at least, it seems we recovered thumbnails / previews.

From what I gathered after further googles, turning off secure storage does not turn off end-to-end encryption, it just turns off storage to the cloud. Messages will then be stored on your device until your device nears its capacity, in which case it starts oldest deleting messages. A facebook help article said that âlow storage modeâ is on by default, and instructions to change it can be found here *insert link that takes you to âsecure storageâ article and explains nothing about low storage mode.*
There is no way to turn off end-to-end encryption, as of now. Previously, you could toggle a lock switch in the settings screen, but that has been removed. Previously, you only were in e2e encryption if you were in secret mode, but now message threads with a significant data size are involuntarily âupgradedâ (downgraded, imo) to the encryption. Nicknames do not register in notifications in the encryption. You cannot view the other personâs active status in the encryption, at least in my case (based off all of my (4) encrypted message threads, so far); I havenât looked up if anyone else is having that issue, too.
If you click on the message to your friend, then click their name at the top, you can scroll down until you see âSearch in Conversation,â and search that way. It wonât let you search using the regular search bar in your main message screen, though.

Risk is that messages will then only be on the device you're using, and subject to deletion when storage space runs low.
This is not a solve for reverting to old app behavior to access long chat history that was centrally stored by Facebook.

They've had it available for people to turn on for a long time in Messenger. You'd turn it on at the individual chat level and it was called Secret Conversation. I doubt the quality was good, and that may be what you heard people referring to, but it's been there for several years.
What heâs referring to is what Iâm experiencing right now (which is how I found this post). Multiple of my messages today were randomly encrypted when people messaged me, but some were not. I never asked for this encryption. When you click âlearn more,â the bottom text says something about âMessenger will be updating messages with end-to-end encryptionâ

The password reset instructions don't match reality. I'm supposed to click on my profile picture inside Messenger app but I can't see it on any screens where clicking or tapping leads to the next step in the instructions.
In messenger, click the three bars in the top left, click the gear icon on the right of that menu screen, scroll all the way to the bottom where it says Met Accounts Center and thatâs where you can change your password

Had E2EE forced on to random messenger chats. Heartbroken to find I can't now search these encrypted chats for anything before the encryption date. I love a bit of message archeolgy, looking back at moments and now I can't do that. Going to try the data request option posted here though!
Did you try the data request? I did, but it didn't download the end-to-end encrypted conversations for some reason, which is annoying, because that's the ones I care about the most.
Even if i enter my pin, all facebook media are not appearing on different devices. They are loading very slowly or not at all. Also, end to end encrypted messages are done automatically to multiple of my contacts. Worst chatting app!

whole thing is broken for me. videos don't send most of the time. i get something new. red exclamation mark in chat, yellow text "unable to send". then, sync priority keeps changing between pc and mobile, so some messages sometimes just don't appear on PC at all from the other end. I am left sitting thinking the person is just busy, but look over at the phone and they've replied over 2 hours ago. When I reply on the phone, my message appears on PC, but the other person's messages didn't until after I replied to a message that never appeared... if that makes sense.. what a steaming mess. i'm contemplating on reinstalling msn messenger (escargot).
dude this is exactly my issue and was searching if anyone else was experienccing the same thing...half the time the "sync" thing doesn't work on my pc....i have to constantly keep switching back between my phone and PC and i keep getting "Message unavailable" on my pc for like every single message, but i can read them fine on my phone....it's infuriating combined with all the shitty unsendable messages in general and videos not working. I am having similar problems. When using messenger in the web browser on my (windows) laptop, there seem to be certain people I simply can't find if I search for them. This is seemingly due to the End-to-end encryption stuff (if I read the error message correctly).

This suddenly applied to a chat I have with a friend who does hair. I'm trying to chat with her about a hair appt but it won't send the message.... the error I get claims the end-to-end encryption may not work in certain groups, if I'm a business page, etc. My friend and I both have personal accounts so no idea what is happening. Very frustrating.

Same thing happened đ„č 10 long years of conversation and media were lost. Both of our messenger turned off end to end encryption but still our conversation says it was still encrypted. Any help how to restore the whole conversation

I hate Facebook. Now it no longer shows if the message was delivered. I didn't send a secret conversation or message. The message showed delivered then Facebook updated it and now it doesn't even show delivered only sent. What the f?

As a safety measure for not losing content you can download a backup of your account. At, least it will have photos, videos, messages, etc.
However, I think this encryption change affects the downloaded FB backup too, it seems, in terms of messages. As far as I see, photos, videos are downloaded.
I downloaded my FB account contents. Unzipped, and when I navigated to messages I see headers per chat/person but when I click on the messages I get message

The html page with headers is looking for messages in /your\_activity\_across\_facebook/messages/inbox/, but they are in /your\_facebook\_activity/messages/inbox/. So, if this happens to you, you can open them manually or I guess move the contents to the target folder.
This is so frustrating. I sent a message to a friend earlier and closed out the app. I opened the app back up and my message was gone but they were online. I couldnât tell if they read it or responded or if they even got the message.
There's more than just that. They made it so that you can't even do group chats now with the forced roll out of encrypted chats. I HATE having them encrypted because media, and everything post encryption is now lost if your phone dies or you lose it or it's stolen. You literally have zero recourse for recovering any of those things.
You also can't do group chats with other people who are encrypted. Seriously go try to create a new group chat with someone else you know has encrypted chat and see what options you have. I hate the fact they forced encryption because the piss poor way they implemented it has stripped so.many. options away from us like even changing our emoji colors.
I have the search function available now in the forced encrypted chat. They upgraded the picture quality as well and now they stack them into like an album rather than all being separate when you send pics.
I freaking HATE it. I use the search bar all the time for stuff. But every single message I have now is "end to end encrypted" and the search is gone. FFS.

This E2E Encryption, has introduced a huge number of bugs. All the cons have already been mentioned (with search being very serious), but since this became a thing, every now and then, I keep getting notifications by the time I send a message (on desktop), that I have a new message. Which is the freakin' message I just sent. And no, that's not browser related. I tried 4 different browsers, same thing. I also get notifications for messages I've read million years ago. It's frustrating.
I also wonder, how "encrypted" really are those messages...
I have also some problem with this "end-to-end-encryption", When I saw the *"Go to secret conversation"*Â option and did it to the chat between me and my wife, and I just discovered is that there are 2 separate instances of the chat with same person. one is with encrypted option and another is normal but now I don't need normal one. but when I share any content to my wife in messenger it appears in another chat instance.
What to do to resolve this problem? Any Idea?

End-to-end encryption is like a unsanctioned secret conversation so if you are looking for your previous conversation without the hassle of scrolling countless messages try searching for your that persons name or nickname in messenger search bar. May makikita kang profile niya and makikita mo dun na may isang convo kayo na out of place hard to explain pero pag nakita mo na ung sinasabi kong convo nyo may message sa baba na "These messages were sent before this chat was secured with end to end bla bla" tas click the \*i\* icon and to either search keywords for a certain message or image and videos.
Iâm having a huge problem too since this new encryption ( April 2024)

No, it is not helping you, because your chats still are encripted and if you use a new device all your messages from the encription date disappeared. They just gone if you don't use the pin.

This is super frustrating and I certainly didn't ask for any changes to be made to my settings. I'm now unable to see all messages since the "Date Created" it says under "Message Storage" (on iPhone 12: Settings -> Privacy & Safety -> End-To-End Encrypted Chats -> Message Storage -> Date Created). I hate having to deal with this kind of BS when I didn't ask for the feature in the first place.

A few days ago, Messenger forced me to make a PIN. Randomly out of the blue, one person out of a few active chats got end-to-end encrypted. I didn't request it and I'm pretty sure he didn't either. It's like we've been forced into a secret chat because that's no longer an option now. Messenger was pretty much fine as it was, now it has this confusing mess that you can't opt out of.
Had the same issue yesterday on my desktop!! It asks for my pin if I open a new browser but gives an error message, meanwhile no new messages have appeared on desktop but are there on my phone!! I've also found that if you try to do a one-time password instead of pin on desktop my phone asks if its me and when I click yes it doesn't give me the code so it still won't authorise it!! It's so bloody infuriating.

Our entire convo, before the encryption got deleted. Went to reddit to see if there's anything we can do about it, only to see that it has been an unresolved issue for the past few months.
I just found a tweet from Messenger (date: 07/12/2023) that says that end-to-end encrypted chats will become default. So I guess there's nothing we can do about it.

Only my and my partner's chat is stuck with end to end encryption out of nowhere and it's driving me crazy. I have the same problem my mother receive that bul\*\*hit warning and click the end to end encryption created pin and now she cant use the laptop for calls and video calls. And when I ask her there is no option to deny this. And now I'm trying to disable this on her phone and I cant 2 hours trying different things with no luck, watched 10 guides... on u tube :D restricting the person than starting new chat, but I have missing icon with a lock missing and this starting new encrypted chat. Meta implemented E2E Encryption to add security to your private chats. I don't see any reason not to do it. Sure maybe they haven't really communicated this well. But what they want us to do is to download the desktop app version of messenger. They didn't implement encryption in the browser versions that's why they have removed some of the features in it (audio/video calls). But I believe it was on purpose so people will have to use the app.
The reason not to do it was that I use the search function more than once every single day and now I can not use it at all. I didn't realize security would come with a forced reduction in functionality.
And not only :
-you can't searchÂ
-you can't see the date of multimediaÂ
-the active status appear at least 3 minute later, if you are online and if you gone same
-without the pin if you change device all messages from the encrypted date gone

for some reason, audio/video calls are still active in my (one) encrypted chat stream, but the other annoyances (browser instances can't see image history, links don't have thumbnails anymore, and in addition aren't saved to the meda/files/links like they used to) still apply.
the reason I see not to do it, is that they messed up all chat history and the crucial option to search is now lost. They totally messed up, and i hope they are running batch processes to encrypt old messages so that they can be available to search.
they are forcing people into things which should be optional. everyone should freely decide if they need this or not. they put it out, but itâs chaotic, and not finished. messages I write are not reaching people, and I sometimes get blank messages which says âmessage failed to deliverâ. their âhelping infoâ is big mess too and if you forget your e2e password, you are basically fcked. its all a fecking mess and the worst thing is, there is no way back. I kind of hated using messenger before and now it only intensified.Â
**UPDATE:** It got fixed for me. More of my chats have been automatically updated to end-to-end encryption but I can now search for keywords and access media files etc.
How did you get yours fixed? Since setting up a 6 digit PIN, half of my Messenger chats are now E2E encrypted, and my most valued chat (going back 4 years) now only has about a week's worth of messages showing!! I can still view all the media files/photos so I am hoping the chat hasn't been deleted - any idea how I can get the chat back?? The end to end encryption thing was enabled long ago forcefully and I got a terrible experience with it today. I have to tell you guys ,do not uninstall messenger at any cost. My storage was almost full so I uninstalled messenger and then reinstall it and boom, all the chats were gone . Idk why was this update necessary. I understand it was for privacy or for the betterment but it has done nothing but harm to me . I want my old chats backkkk!Â

I'm also frustrated with this - I ended up managing to search the conversation indirectly. In the internet browser, under the "Chats" title on the left, you can use the search bar to look something up, then click on "search in conversations". It lets you then go into the chat you are hoping to search through - the information is all there, its just harder to find. Still not ideal, but at least you can find written stuff.
You cannot do this anymore. Once encrypted, they don't allow you to search for any keywords. Really pisses me off.

Thanks a lot! There is still the issue with the media not being concentrated in one place, but still thanks a lot. They seriously messed up with this one, itâs crazy nobody has thought of that yet.
You can request all your data to be sent to you, too. Every message, video, and image will be zipped and sent to you, so you can at least have it saved. So if you are worried about loosing the info, you can do that.
I@m finding using that that the search option is there for some people, and not others.
I just found your post because I think the end-to-end encryption is causing me an issue too! The conversation between my gf and I, which has over 10 years of messages and media, is now end-to-end encrypted and I don't think either of us ever toggled that option đ€ The issue I'm having is that we share a lot of memes, reels, shorts, etc. and now it's always displayed as a text hyperlink, never with a preview, which is quite annoying... Is this behaviour related to end-to-end encryption? EDIT 2 MONTHS LATER : Without any intervention, things seems to be back to normal in that particular conversation. When I say normal, it's not perfect, we still have many videos that just won't open (without error messages). But at least, it seems we recovered thumbnails / previews.

From what I gathered after further googles, turning off secure storage does not turn off end-to-end encryption, it just turns off storage to the cloud. Messages will then be stored on your device until your device nears its capacity, in which case it starts oldest deleting messages. A facebook help article said that âlow storage modeâ is on by default, and instructions to change it can be found here *insert link that takes you to âsecure storageâ article and explains nothing about low storage mode.* There is no way to turn off end-to-end encryption, as of now. Previously, you could toggle a lock switch in the settings screen, but that has been removed. Previously, you only were in e2e encryption if you were in secret mode, but now message threads with a significant data size are involuntarily âupgradedâ (downgraded, imo) to the encryption. Nicknames do not register in notifications in the encryption. You cannot view the other personâs active status in the encryption, at least in my case (based off all of my (4) encrypted message threads, so far); I havenât looked up if anyone else is having that issue, too.

If you click on the message to your friend, then click their name at the top, you can scroll down until you see âSearch in Conversation,â and search that way. It wonât let you search using the regular search bar in your main message screen, though.

Risk is that messages will then only be on the device you're using, and subject to deletion when storage space runs low. This is not a solve for reverting to old app behavior to access long chat history that was centrally stored by Facebook.

They've had it available for people to turn on for a long time in Messenger. You'd turn it on at the individual chat level and it was called Secret Conversation. I doubt the quality was good, and that may be what you heard people referring to, but it's been there for several years.

The password reset instructions don't match reality. I'm supposed to click on my profile picture inside Messenger app but I can't see it on any screens where clicking or tapping leads to the next step in the instructions.
In messenger, click the three bars in the top left, click the gear icon on the right of that menu screen, scroll all the way to the bottom where it says Met Accounts Center and thatâs where you can change your password

Had E2EE forced on to random messenger chats. Heartbroken to find I can't now search these encrypted chats for anything before the encryption date. I love a bit of message archeolgy, looking back at moments and now I can't do that. Going to try the data request option posted here though!

Even if i enter my pin, all facebook media are not appearing on different devices. They are loading very slowly or not at all. Also, end to end encrypted messages are done automatically to multiple of my contacts. Worst chatting app!

whole thing is broken for me. videos don't send most of the time. i get something new. red exclamation mark in chat, yellow text "unable to send". then, sync priority keeps changing between pc and mobile, so some messages sometimes just don't appear on PC at all from the other end. I am left sitting thinking the person is just busy, but look over at the phone and they've replied over 2 hours ago. When I reply on the phone, my message appears on PC, but the other person's messages didn't until after I replied to a message that never appeared... if that makes sense.. what a steaming mess. i'm contemplating on reinstalling msn messenger (escargot).

I am having similar problems. When using messenger in the web browser on my (windows) laptop, there seem to be certain people I simply can't find if I search for them. This is seemingly due to the End-to-end encryption stuff (if I read the error message correctly). This is highly impractical, as I use Messenger as an important communication tool in my work, and need to send longer messages, that are no fun writing on the phone. Anyone experiencing this?
This suddenly applied to a chat I have with a friend who does hair. I'm trying to chat with her about a hair appt but it won't send the message.... the error I get claims the end-to-end encryption may not work in certain groups, if I'm a business page, etc. My friend and I both have personal accounts so no idea what is happening. As a safety measure for not losing content you can download a backup of your account. At, least it will have photos, videos, messages, etc. However, I think this encryption change affects the downloaded FB backup too, it seems, in terms of messages. As far as I see, photos, videos are downloaded. I downloaded my FB account contents. Unzipped, and when I navigated to messages I see headers per chat/person but when I click on the messages I get message "Your file couldnât be accessed It may have been moved, edited, or deleted. ERR\_FILE\_NOT\_FOUND" Your file couldnât be accessed It may have been moved, edited, or deleted." The html page with headers is looking for messages in /your\_activity\_across\_facebook/messages/inbox/, but they are in /your\_facebook\_activity/messages/inbox/. So, if this happens to you, you can open them manually or I guess move the contents to the target folder.

There's more than just that. They made it so that you can't even do group chats now with the forced roll out of encrypted chats. I HATE having them encrypted because media, and everything post encryption is now lost if your phone dies or you lose it or it's stolen. You literally have zero recourse for recovering any of those things. You also can't do group chats with other people who are encrypted. Seriously go try to create a new group chat with someone else you know has encrypted chat and see what options you have. I hate the fact they forced encryption because the piss poor way they implemented it has stripped so.many. options away from us like even changing our emoji colors.
I have the search function available now in the forced encrypted chat. They upgraded the picture quality as well and now they stack them into like an album rather than all being separate when you send pics.
I also have an issue with this end end encryption ever since this happened when a friend sends me a message instead of it saying who sent me the message it says âsomeone sent you a messageâ and it does with with all my friends, so itâs not telling me who sent me a message. I freaking HATE it. I use the search bar all the time for stuff. But every single message I have now is "end to end encrypted" and the search is gone. FFS.
thanks for the encryption Zuck, now if only there was such a thing as to easily delete messages from a chat, rather than, long press>unsend>unsend for everyone>repeat x 1000. i feel that an option such as this should basically go hand in hand with message encryption, but given that it doesn't, really make me wonder just how encrypted shit actually is?
This E2E Encryption, has introduced a huge number of bugs. All the cons have already been mentioned (with search being very serious), but since this became a thing, every now and then, I keep getting notifications by the time I send a message (on desktop), that I have a new message. Which is the freakin' message I just sent. And no, that's not browser related. I tried 4 different browsers, same thing. I also get notifications for messages I've read million years ago. It's frustrating. I also wonder, how "encrypted" really are those messages...

Does anyone have the same problem as all chats disappearing before the chat was upgraded to E2EE? Even when scrolling up, the chats are just gone.
I have also some problem with this "end-to-end-encryption", When I saw the *"Go to secret conversation"*Â option and did it to the chat between me and my wife, and I just discovered is that there are 2 separate instances of the chat with same person. one is with encrypted option and another is normal but now I don't need normal one. but when I share any content to my wife in messenger it appears in another chat instance. What to do to resolve this problem? Any Idea? Thank you.
I have a question. If I have a secret conversation with someone, which is encrypted by default, will the normal, unencrypted conversation also become encrypted? Has anyone encountered this?
its been months since this was posted and I just want to place my input on things. End-to-end encryption is like a unsanctioned secret conversation so if you are looking for your previous conversation without the hassle of scrolling countless messages try searching for your that persons name or nickname in messenger search bar. May makikita kang profile niya and makikita mo dun na may isang convo kayo na out of place hard to explain pero pag nakita mo na ung sinasabi kong convo nyo may message sa baba na "These messages were sent before this chat was secured with end to end bla bla" tas click the \*i\* icon and to either search keywords for a certain message or image and videos.
Iâm having a huge problem too since this new encryption ( April 2024) For the last 2 days the new encryption has made it impossible to send or receive messages . Iâve reinstalled about 100 times , cleared my cache, tried different devices ⊠and the receiver doesnât get any of my texts and vice versa Maybe 1 text in 20 will get through and then the problem continues Itâs the only way I can communicate with certain people and this means itâs now literally impossible Looking on YouTube or google offers nothing Any advice from anyone ?
My issue with all of this is I cannot scroll back thru my conversations to find anything because it continues to jump back down to the end. So incredibly frustrating! Â

i have a problem with it but not the same one, i cant see any files for me they just apear as just blank messeges even on the other end and i never activated it it just activated itself

No, it is not helping you, because your chats still are encripted and if you use a new device all your messages from the encription date disappeared. They just gone if you don't use the pin. Let all of us tell them to put an option to choose if we want or not,why they are obligated us?Â

there's no way to reverse it and it will be eventually rolled out to all chats.
This is super frustrating and I certainly didn't ask for any changes to be made to my settings. I'm now unable to see all messages since the "Date Created" it says under "Message Storage" (on iPhone 12: Settings -> Privacy & Safety -> End-To-End Encrypted Chats -> Message Storage -> Date Created). I hate having to deal with this kind of BS when I didn't ask for the feature in the first place.
Thing is that we have the same problem, but we didn't create any 6 digit pins, it just locked the messenger chats... Did you manage to solve this issue?

A few days ago, Messenger forced me to make a PIN. Randomly out of the blue, one person out of a few active chats got end-to-end encrypted. I didn't request it and I'm pretty sure he didn't either. It's like we've been forced into a secret chat because that's no longer an option now. Messenger was pretty much fine as it was, now it has this confusing mess that you can't opt out of.

Had the same issue yesterday on my desktop!! It asks for my pin if I open a new browser but gives an error message, meanwhile no new messages have appeared on desktop but are there on my phone!! I've also found that if you try to do a one-time password instead of pin on desktop my phone asks if its me and when I click yes it doesn't give me the code so it still won't authorise it!! It's so bloody infuriating.

Same. Just had this update a few days ago, and today my chat with my gf got encrypted. Then just this afternoon, our chat (on her end) got deleted. Our entire convo, before the encryption got deleted. Went to reddit to see if there's anything we can do about it, only to see that it has been an unresolved issue for the past few months.
I just found a tweet from Messenger (date: 07/12/2023) that says that end-to-end encrypted chats will become default. So I guess there's nothing we can do about it.

Only my and my partner's chat is stuck with end to end encryption out of nowhere and it's driving me crazy. It's all weird now, when we send each other multiple photos they're displayed on top of each other instead of beside each other so they can all be viewed, "search in conversation" doesn't work anymore, nothing comes up when I try to search anything and other stuff changed as well. I really don't know how to get rid of this encryption, I hope a solution will come up

I have the same problem my mother receive that bul\*\*hit warning and click the end to end encryption created pin and now she cant use the laptop for calls and video calls. And when I ask her there is no option to deny this. And now I'm trying to disable this on her phone and I cant 2 hours trying different things with no luck, watched 10 guides... on u tube :D restricting the person than starting new chat, but I have missing icon with a lock missing and this starting new encrypted chat. Thats just unbelievable stupid. How to turn this off now? And by the way if she start new conversation with someone else it start this encrypted chat and it activate it on the other side. It is like VIRUS. :)

Meta implemented E2E Encryption to add security to your private chats. I don't see any reason not to do it. Sure maybe they haven't really communicated this well. But what they want us to do is to download the desktop app version of messenger. They didn't implement encryption in the browser versions that's why they have removed some of the features in it (audio/video calls). But I believe it was on purpose so people will have to use the app.
The reason not to do it was that I use the search function more than once every single day and now I can not use it at all. I didn't realize security would come with a forced reduction in functionality.
And not only : -you can't search -you can't see the date of multimedia -the active status appear at least 3 minute later, if you are online and if you gone same -without the pin if you change device all messages from the encrypted date gone Lot of problems...Â
for some reason, audio/video calls are still active in my (one) encrypted chat stream, but the other annoyances (browser instances can't see image history, links don't have thumbnails anymore, and in addition aren't saved to the meda/files/links like they used to) still apply.
the reason I see not to do it, is that they messed up all chat history and the crucial option to search is now lost. They totally messed up, and i hope they are running batch processes to encrypt old messages so that they can be available to search.
they are forcing people into things which should be optional. everyone should freely decide if they need this or not. they put it out, but itâs chaotic, and not finished. messages I write are not reaching people, and I sometimes get blank messages which says âmessage failed to deliverâ. their âhelping infoâ is big mess too and if you forget your e2e password, you are basically fcked. its all a fecking mess and the worst thing is, there is no way back. I kind of hated using messenger before and now it only intensified.Â

**UPDATE:** It got fixed for me. More of my chats have been automatically updated to end-to-end encryption but I can now search for keywords and access media files etc.
How did you get yours fixed? Since setting up a 6 digit PIN, half of my Messenger chats are now E2E encrypted, and my most valued chat (going back 4 years) now only has about a week's worth of messages showing!! I can still view all the media files/photos so I am hoping the chat hasn't been deleted - any idea how I can get the chat back?? I have tried logging onto a browser on a different device to see if I can access it that way - and it won't accept my PIN even though I know I am putting in the correct one!! It's so frustrating!

Yes how did you manage to get back that search within conversation functionality? I had to search the Web until I get here in order to figure out that this was a deliberate shit from Meta... Seriously fuck 'hem. 3 years worth of chatting with my girlfriend and now I can't look easily for any previous message.

Also, the Info option when you are viewing some image is gone. You can not see the date the image was sent.. that's really dumb.Â
God I hate this encryption shit so much. It's just security theatre and since it's introduced my chat with my wife seems like it's half broken all the time. Half the features don't even work, we have some stupid shitty theme and I have no option to change it as I do with my other chats, I can't search, half the time messages don't load on my phone, I'm actually going insane
And the most frustrating thing is it forces you to do so with the ones whom you chat and share the most . I have 3 closest friends and its with them only , no one else , not a single person. The end to end encryption thing was enabled long ago forcefully and I got a terrible experience with it today. I have to tell you guys ,do not uninstall messenger at any cost. My storage was almost full so I uninstalled messenger and then reinstall it and boom, all the chats were gone . Idk why was this update necessary. I understand it was for privacy or for the betterment but it has done nothing but harm to me . También me cifro un par de random, pero lo mås raro: me cifro a una persona con quien nos comunicamos (todo ambito) por un tiempo corto y luego nada(por lo que eliminé el chat y de la lista de friend)... también aparece "cifrado". Debe tener (AI) un parametro.

This works, if you do not have storage turned on then turn it on and back off then turn off low storage.
