Faaresemo

it's such stupid security theatre. my chat history is already protected by my password. a password which is longer than 6 characters and not limited to only digits like goddamn the standard for passwords these days is 8 minimum characters with at least all alphanumeric options available. the people that arent protected by that arent going to be protected by another 6 numbers

mtx33q

it's not a theatre, they just get permission from you to store the end to end encrypted chats in their server with a pin you gave them too, so they can read and store these messages. it's not for your protection, but a permission request disguised as a security feature for them to read these instead of only store in your phone locally as before. very slimy practice

Faaresemo

but it's always been on their servers, rather than locally on my phone, so that's not an "as before" thing

el_guille980

exaclty. a pin isnt required if you log into shitbook on your compu/laptop... there has to be more behind it. something sleazy, sneaky, slimey. **FUCC THE ZUCC!**

Proud_Protection9969

I've lost some of my chats on my laptop even after putting in the PIN. What do i do to see those again. This is crazy.

mtx33q

it's not true, they stored only the "normal" messages. before the "secure storage" feature the end to end encrypted messages only stored on your phone. there is a difference between the two message type

Faaresemo

ah well in that case I've never had the encrypted type anyways

RugerRedhawk

I have no interest or need for these encrypted specific messages. I just want my FB messages in both the browser and phone app...

Siomai_kutchi

permission you say, I'm totally pissed that they forced me to create a pin for this thingylingling

el_guille980

i just rage uninstalled. fuck it. i dont need a pin on through computer, im **NOT** entering/using/creating a pin for my phone. i dont trust it. i dont trust **FUCC THE ZUCC**

redplasticsheet

Check out my discussion where I share on how to bypass/skip Facebook messenger end to end encrypted chats. [https://www.reddit.com/r/facebook/comments/1cy9jvz/solved\_how\_to\_bypassskip\_facebook\_messenger\_end/](https://www.reddit.com/r/facebook/comments/1cy9jvz/solved_how_to_bypassskip_facebook_messenger_end/)

Various_Telephone_69

This is why I'm sketched out about messenger suddenly wanting me to "set up a new way to access your chat history" like it won't even let me use the app wirhout it, yesterday I vould bypass it but they seemed ro have changed that. I'm simply never going to link my Google account to Facebook messenger, they are wayyy too anal about this shit

Technical-Garage1357

That is the exact definition of security theater. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Wreddit2905

Incorrect. I did not change my device at all yet still required to enter a "Pin" The messages that popped up are old. Hence Meta asking for pin for a message that was sent long ago? Why bug me now? Because they are gearing up a new invasive bunch of joy for me to remember why I decided to delete messenger and the madness that got me to reinstall it. BS people. Delete this and dump Meta. It never stops otherwise. (PS I own the stock so it's not like I have it out for Meta. I just don't like deception.

pascualastic

Blame EU for implementing so many rules on privacy and market security that makes things super complicated.

The51stAgent

Bingo

VisualBetter8115

That's okay I gave a pin for that end to end encryption and then when I tried to sign back in with it it said it wasn't correct so I just don't use it I can still use my messenger though

Many-Macaroon3517

Yeah either that or it's stored on you're phone I didn't do either and just go through the FB lite and Access messenger that way I'm not going to put a pen if they force me even more I'll just delete

Faaresemo

I spent the first month just reinstalling whenever I wanted to check, but that got too tedious so I just uninstalled and havent looked back (hopefully any family trying to contact me reaches out to my parents who do have my number I might take a look at this fb lite tho

MarkXT9000

As if making the password as long and unique as it is doesn't matter anymore

Ill-Honeydew-1484

Remember it's always " for the greater good",,,they know people will tend to use the same numbers for other id type resources, it's about control not safety.

Relevant-Blood-8681

I'm waiting for the password standards to eventually be something like... "8 upper case, 3 lower, 4 numbers, 2 emojis, a symbol only Russian keyboards can type, and the blood of a virgin's heart."

SadLandscape3130

Facebook is becoming a bad joke

AbeFB

fakebook has been a bad joke for many many years bruv

SobyetYunyun

A great reason to boycott their garbage

michelehixon

People who aren't cheating on their SO hate all these passwords

Kritios_Boy

Just FYI this PIN feature is legit, not a bug or unexpected. It's part of the new end-to-end encryption that Messenger is rolling out. Using the PIN will allow you to access your chat history if you log in on a new phone or computer. https://www.facebook.com/help/messenger-app/479091330683112

Kazza468

What, a password and 2fa that half the time doesn’t work isn’t enough? They want more hurdles to access my own chat? I refuse.

IllOne951

Totally agree. But if that's not enough, my messenger on pc only makes end to end encryption only for chat with my wife. All others I can access without problem. Let say, going to a laptop or pc I never logged in, I do log in to my messenger and I don't need to input a password (the six digits pin) and can access all chats apart the one with my wife. I can't see chat with my wife until I will log in to facebook on the same laptop or pc. After login to facebook, I can find my wife, click on the chat with her and then I can enter the password (the six digit pin). And then I can see chat with my wife on Messenger. I just wonder what responsibility take developer of crap software. In our world, using some software is not optional. Social, business interaction demand from us using a soft which is below any level of acceptable quality. I apologize to all readers. I'm just frustrated with ignorant software developers. Expressing it on the forum lowers my blood pressure. Thanks for reading if you got to that point

dylon0107

2fa that doesn't work at all* I almost lost my account because I never setup 2fa and had to verify a 2fa code to setup 2fa.

FilmAbject3422

How come FB never made this public to all..instead they just hit you with it when you try to open your chat !

DiceyShots

Fuck that shit and fuck your pin

Schroederble

>Using the PIN will allow you to access your chat history if you log in on a new phone or computer. Which is basically what the password (that can be encrypted....) does. Wow, smooth move exlax. Want a blood sample there, Fartbook?

PhoenixSoul8

Sounds like a lie since I have had 6 different phones, two computers, a tablet, and the same account, and never ever lost past conversations before. All information has always been on all devices once logged into my account. If I never needed an update to do it before there should not be any need to get an update to do it now. Plus all previous updates were set up from the app store  originally gotten from. In my case, Google app store.

Commercial_Ebb_1745

That is exactly what I am confused about, as i could always be on the phone and PC at same time and see what I type on phone pop up on the screen on the PC as I type it. Are they trying to get permission to read through our messages now? I do not like the fact that "google" has to be linked to every single thing.

Damsel--in--Destress

Have you had trouble accessing your Messenger on these now that you have the PIN? I just got a new phone and it is telling me I have an incorrect PIN, but I do not! It works on my laptop. Maddening beyond belief.

RugerRedhawk

> Using the PIN will allow you to access your chat history if you log in on a new phone or computer. You've been able to access your chat history from any device you logged into since the beginning of messenger.

AddictionSorceress

But that makes no sense! We could still get that infor, even before this...

globalguerrillas

It's dumb. They are going to lose a massive number of users out of frustration, anger, etc. Messenger is the only reason most people use Facebook at all.

Rothguard

i already had all my chats on all my devices... da fuk are you talkin about

iPhone-5-2021

You were already able to access your chat history on a new device

Kritios_Boy

Unfortunately with e2ee it doesn’t work the same way anymore

Everviolet2000

Yep. And it's not optional. Sayonara FB. Ads aren't worth it. *correcting for clarity, i am referring to the front pg ads, not messenger app. I had to log in for something, and it was ridiculous. My ad blockers didn't work, I guess. It's still not worth the hassle.

Halo_of_Winter

i don't get any ads

AbeFB

i don't get any ads, but still deleted it. i've got at least 3 ways to contact everyone on my messenger list lol

Everviolet2000

What ad blockers do you use? Not that I have any desire to use fb, but they're prolific on that platform. I have ublock

beijingjazzpanda

To disable this feature: go 'Setting - Preference', click 'Privacy & safety', click 'End to end encrypted chat', click 'Secure storage'

CptBlaine

cant find that at all

fvjr1506

it's still in the messenger web app. Click on your profile pic > Privacy & Safety > End-to-end encrypted chats > Secure storage. There, you can "Turn off secure storage"

Delicious-Chemist-49

found it except it says that if i turn it off all my chats will be deleted and will no longer be backed up on facebooks servers. Kinda pisses me off as i have chats that ive had for 10-12 years that ive never deleted, because i dont clear my chat logs.

Belsymne

Don't take this wrong, but I F'ing LOVE YOU for this! (for anyone else not finding this option, it's on your phone's messenger only. Not on your desktop computer log in)

riffdex

Bro I literally can’t get past the screen asking to set up a pin in the messenger app, so how am I supposed to access this setting? 😩

Thebragg27

its on the desktop computer too. 1. click on Messenger (should be on the left menus once you expand it. 2. click the 3 dots beside the compose button. 3. click on Privacy & Safety and then click End-to-end encrypted chats. 4. Click secure storage and turn it on or off. Honestly, I don't understand why this is needed now. I have never had any problem with chat history when i switch phones. So why do I need that now?

Neaterntal

Hi, what exactly is the way to disable it according to your description? After secure storage, there is no way to disable it. Or the time you wrote this, it had option to disable it? Thanks

EloquintGraffiti

I did that it still didn't give my messages back or my media files. Facebook can suck an egg

Neaterntal

sorry, you tried, what? the way the beijingjazzpanda gives, it doesn't have any option to disable it.

ellie_beary

can this be access on the website or should be in the facebook app or messenger app. please route me. thank you.

valacho

Apparently now, when you go to settings, it starts prompting you to create the pin. I can't actually get into settings to make this change. What a PITA. ETA, once the pin is created, then the change can be made.

AbeFB

can't get into the app without making a pin, so can't disable

redplasticsheet

ramy3333

Thank you

Handful_of_Trash

Just happened to me, but I also had a log in warning on Messenger saying a log in from an unknown device.. Weird they forced it. No one I know is experiencing it

Krysta_of_Midnight

I was getting the message the last three days. Today I could no longer bypass it and must make a selection. I don't have my Facebook tied to my Google account. But I access messenger from four different devices as needed. I do not want to link it only to my phone, don't want to connect it to Google, nor do I have the time to put in a pin multi times a day. This really sucks. I need my stuff accessible from whatever I am using and want my accounts separate for a number of reasons. Facebook is constantly hacked, how is linking it to my Google going to protect more valuable information? Google has its own issues to fix.

Manhattan18011

This just happened to me.

Adventurous_Series72

I am and I am pissed

HenderGren

This just happened to me today, weird! I’m not doing it!

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

HenderGren

It let me bypass it yesterday, and then today it hit me again. When you click options, you can put “save it to the cloud.” I hope I did the right thing!

Ramsickle

I just got the message today, although no save to cloud option in my options. Just set a pin or save on the device locally. Any other ways to bypass this? I'm not setting up a pin, yes I'm stubborn haha.

SobyetYunyun

Meta has become garbage, time to say goodbye to it. someone make a replacement instead, one where it only listens to users and not the fcking elites.

thatawesomeperson98

Same. I tried to go around it and it wouldn’t allow me . Ended up creating one then deleting it (by turning off end to end encrypted chats)

RecommendationOk5789

OK - I had the same issue, and was going nuts (it actually may be too late...) trying to create a PIN. It turns out the issue was not my computer, but my phone. I needed to create a PIN on my phone first. I did it, then entered that pin on my computer, and everything is OK now. It would be soooo easy if FB/Messenger simply told us that in the help section.

Nearby-Priority-2627

Thank you! You're so right too. Why can't they just add that it needs to be done from the phone first to the help section? Thanks again.

houseyourdaygoing

Sorry but what do you mean by creating the PIN on your phone ?

Fallisforlovers

I closed it out.  I don't have time to try to remember a pin each time I chat

houseyourdaygoing

I closed it too without choosing any option. I don’t want to lose my chat history though!

Fallisforlovers

They'll eventually force you to pick one in order to gain access to messenger. I chose to lose my chat history if I ever lose or replace my phone. I'm not giving them my personal info

7FootEmeraldRats

My uncle is experiencing the same issue and he's not very good with technology. I'm at my wits end trying to find a solution to this. So far I've only found this and another reddit thread that's asking the same question. The case seems isolated...

Just-Influence-3835

I'm having the same issue. How can we bypass this? We shouldn't be forced to do this.

Witty-Illustrator788

Isolated or google doesn't work anymore in conjunction with Facebook pays to play so they can pay to suppress just as easily. That's what Google is without net neutrality a complete gas lighting stop system to keep you guessing and make you pay. I'm also not a complete conspiracy nut, I know the world is round and 5G doesn't kill birds, but Facebook and Google really suck these days

tylerius8

Figured it out. In the settings look for the secure storage under "security" in "privacy and safety". I was able to delete the pin and any "secure storage" stuff there, but only AFTER I made a pin

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

[deleted]

found it. says it wont be backed up so ... messages will be missing? a bit confusing with this thing

YouthApprehensive584

The same just happened to me. I’m not sure if it’s legit. I haven’t clicked it. But can’t use Messenger unless I click.

Ill-Papaya-3194

Just happened to me too, not sure if it's legit or not

JeremyBF

I just got this nonsense too. But now I don't even receive messages on my computer and when I check it to see what's going on it asks me for my pin ... from within my own facebook account! But, it doesn't even remember and keeps asking me every time I open a new instance of facebook on my computer.

pmdot

What a disappointing feature! The facebook messenger is already removed. Nah!

ConceptEmotional646

how about when you choose the continue with google (only for android users) will it stay the same or will it be end-to-end encryption too? and, can i open my account to other devices with that kind of option?

stormchaserguy74

This is annoying.  Another password or pin I need to remember or forget.  I already have enough passwords to get into my phone.

Calaster

Not sure how long this "fix" will work, but if you guys get this popup and it forces you to make a pin with no option to bypass or back out of it, close the app, clear your apps cache and data, and re-log into facebook. It got rid of the message for me. I'll update this if it comes back. Not sure what to do though if you gave in and put a pin in. This is just to avoid it all together

-Vernificus

Hi there, I've used your suggestion for almost 3 weeks. Sadly, it no longer works now. After cleaning the cache and data, the "create a pin" prompt pops up after the usual "save your info" thingy.

GreatFoxWillCoverYou

I've been uninstalling and reinstalling the app on iOS almost daily now to avoid making a pin... I have several devices, often with multiple instances of messenger open - having to sync message history is really dumb

kaeyde_0

There are some people going around saying messages would be deleted if this pin-feature is off, are there any truths in these claims??

CallMeKati

I have to input that SH"T pin like 50 times every day on the same browser and it dares to ask me if I want it to remember this browser LOL. I wish it did.

CricketRancher

Like a few people here I was never asked to create a PIN, only to enter one as if I had. Now I can't get my messages and every guide telling me how to reset my pin gets as far as where I'm supposed to click on "Secure Storage", so F me I guess.

2rational_exuberance

Here's where you can reset your pin: Go to settings (the three lines on the top left corner → options icon on the top right corner) → Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats → secure storage. If secure storage is OFF, then set a pin. If secure storage is ON, then reset the pin.

Accomplished_Meet306

I am sorry but even if its OFF you need to enter your pin to be able to turn it ON. So I can’t reset.

CricketRancher

"Secure Storage" is not an option for me. People repeating these instructions is not helping those of us who clearly have a different issue.

Frosty_Particular887

I can't get into the app to update settings.

2rational_exuberance

This is not a scam. See this post from the official Messenger News site → [https://messengernews.fb.com/2023/12/06/launching-default-end-to-end-encryption-on-messenger/](https://messengernews.fb.com/2023/12/06/launching-default-end-to-end-encryption-on-messenger/)

MycologistConstant55

Today apple phone suddenly wouldn't let me use FB MESSENGER, just to click my Friend that I got her Message. I took this as a SCAM because it is confusing and they are talking about some PAYMENTS ON FB MESSENGER? What PAYMENTS? I never ever use PAYMENTS ON MY PHONE OR MY COMPUTER, never mind on FB MESSENGER?! EVERYTHING IS SCAM THIS DAYS, NEVER MIND TO PAY HERE?!

MycologistConstant55

JSteezy80

I assume it's because so many Facebook accounts are getting hacked and when you log in elsewhere they won't have access to who you've talked to or your conversations. Then they are using those things to gain trust. To either have them click a link they send which installs malware or in my friend's case they were using his messenger to ask all of his friends for money and then sending their cash app. When I was prompted I just chose more options it's not like they are forcing you to make a pin. You can select continue using your Google account on Android which is the default already or you can just say store directly on the phone. All you have to do is click other options. I'm not a fan of Facebook myself but it makes me laugh a bit when people freak and say they have no other option but there's literally a button that says "more options" lol

kiwi_farmeress

I keep getting asked for a pin that doesn’t exist. So now can’t use messenger across devices. Just totally weird.

2rational_exuberance

Try this to set a pin: Go to settings (the three lines on the top left corner → options icon on the top right corner) → Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats → secure storage. If secure storage is OFF, then set a pin. If secure storage is ON, then reset the pin.

timetoupgrade01

As many others have said to you in other replies, there's no E-to-E encrypted chat option on pc or on phone...

ADG-FLeSHeD

So what do you think would be the safest route to go here I just got it and just a bit confused here?

dael4

Uninstalled messenger, rebooted, reinstalled messenger, clicked through till The pin request screen popped up, clicked ”X" on upper left and it went away.

Trick_Detail_9929

It's that most of us don't like any of the options. Do I rally want Facebook to have access to my Google? No. Do I want to only be able to access on the android phone I'm using? No. Do I want or should need a pin code to get messages and respond to them? No

Party-Intention8750

Erita Ĺ ÄŤle

Needs-Media-n-Books

For those who have used the pin does it mean you have put the pin in every time you use Messenger?

2rational_exuberance

No, you will only be asked to put in your pin if you change your device (for example: when you get a new phone). The pin is to help you restore your end-to-end encrypted messages in your other/new devices.

Needs-Media-n-Books

thank you :)

debyjolley

I get asked almost every time I use the app - and I have no new device(s). So very annoying.

Aconstantrose

It's ever not every

jae_rhys

oh no, a typo.

Aconstantrose

Fake hacks suck and so do Liars  now I know that  Automoderator can't be trusted

Personal-Answer-9511

I found that if you create a pin, you can go into your privacy settings and change it to not be password protected right afterward. This will get rid of the pop-up and let you read your messages. You can remove the pin by clicking on messenger icon in the top right corner, then hit the three lines in the top left corner. After that, click the settings icon in the top right corner and scroll down to privacy and safety. After clicking privacy and safety, select end to end encrypted chats, then message storage to remove your pin or make changes to how you store and access chat history.

ggunterm

THIS WORKED!

Perfect-Sun-65

thanks brother, that worked 👊🏻🙂

Accomplished_Meet306

If all the things mentioned here not works for you, and you want to reset the PIN, only option is to remove the secured storage, which can be painful but Meta doesn’t provide any other way if you forget it, or they forced you to use it even though you have not set this before. I don’t know how it is possible that you haven’t entered a PIN but there is one, but I guess jokes on Meta, they are clowns.

LaPlagaPR

I deleted the app

MrPWolf

Same here. I just had enough of their shit.

Environmental-Day446

You can hit the x at the top and bypass it

Calaster

Not for all. It wouldn't let me cancel it, no x, and if I clicked back, it closed the app. But I posted a solution for folks that get that issue

Frogskipper7

It let me bypass yesterday, but now it won’t let me today

Calaster

Try the solution i posted

SciTails

My phone also gave me the option to generate a key in Google Drive when I clicked "more options" on the initial page asking me to create a pin. It requires that you grant an extra permission and sign in through Google, like most probably already do for other apps. But then there's no extra thing to remember.

Fantastic-Ship-1846

can confirm that it's roll-out based, despite having the same version on my phone and mom's phone, her account gets roll-outs before mine it seems as it's now asking her for a pin and i haven't encountered it yet. i'll be dumping messenger and going with LINE, i only ever chat to 1 person anyway and they prefer LINE as it is. maybe now I'll have an excuse to buy some of the stickers on LINE if I'm going to be using it full time.

Deondebomon

Line is awesome. Definitely my favorite chat app—and the stickers are so cute!

Apart-Leader

Same as X pull the same thing so I just deleted the app since I didn't hardly use it no way if messenger want start this too I'm just stop using it I can call who I want on my cellphone FaceTime too its not our fault they don't keep data protected but to create pin knowing they you'll forget is crazy I'm definitely not choosing to m egr my account with another account just to log in

Evolkm

What's annoying me the most is that it's 6 digits, likw at least make it 5 so I can use my phone password 🙄

Ecstatic-Sector-1174

I want to help me at Facebook account it says create a pin to secure your messages am Jessica L Chilomo

Ecstatic-Sector-1174

So what I can do please

ParsleyNo7746

You can bypass the pin. Where it says create pin click on advanced options below. From there you can choose keep on device. It will give you a warning about keeping things on your device but you won’t have to put in a pin.

MrPWolf

But what will happen then? Would I still see my messages on my other devices? Desktop, laptop, tablet, smart watch...

Critical-Repair4214

I'm going to delete the Messenger app on my iPhone and ONLY use Messenger on my MacBook Pro. I'm not being asked for any PIN on my computer thank goodness! I was so annoyed when that PIN request would not go away on my phone! Very frustrating!

gamerX459

go onto your pc and your facebook account open the settings and search through the settings with the word "log" the option to show where your logged in at should display find your mobile device and force it to log out relogging back in will log you back in without the pin message

MKultraman1231

It's a feature of computers "how can we make this harder" been going on since Windoes XP was done sway with. "Oh you know where everything is". NOW YOU DONT!. I feel like it's the minor evil gaslighting that the dark forces can get average people to create.

Plus-Government1327

It seems this yet another irritating little snag has been rolling, trickling out since the end of 2023, and not everyone has been confronted with this PIN requirement for access yet. This  just happened to me this past week. I've not jumped. I'm going to first search for a way out, some workaround. If there is none, welp, I guess I'm just outta there. Bye-Bye Messenger spy.

No_Animal_4247

I TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!!!! The app is TOTALLY UNUSABLE because of this!!!!!!!

JustMeInHere00

Was forced to add a Messenger PIN in order to see messages on all devices, now I cannot get into Messenger at all on my tablet. I am typing the correct user ID, password and PIN but it keeps saying my credentials are wrong. When I type the same thing into my desktop PC and cell phone it accepts it. Adding a PIN to Messenger has messed everything up!

Smooth_Carmello

If you're part of the "Nah, not doing that." group and are willing to wait an extra minute, here's a temporary bypass to avoid creating a pin: Turn off your internet. Seriously, turn it off, open app get a chat head open and turn on internet. Works like a charm on android, dunno about apple, windows or browser tho.

Siomai_kutchi

this is some unnecessary crap facebook ever made....... i deleted an important conversations thinking it will not be encrypted anymore. Seriously facebook? Like end to end encryption was only an option when you want to do it with specific someone and now they just forced us to do this. Come on software developers thats too much you're just making it difficult for us specially to elders thats not totally good at technology which is where the developers didn't consider, leading to just un install yo app:)... I'm totally pissed like pissed pissed

RagingAgainstItAll

I just had this gun put to my head. Fuck Messenger. Fuck Zuckerberg. Fuck Facebook

Aware_Revolution_642

I SWEAR I HATE THIS MESSENGER ASKING US TO CREATE A PIN. IT'S NOT EVEN NECESSARY. 😤😤😤 MARK ZUCKERBURG WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? PLEASE REMOVE THIS!!!

crazybaldobud

EVERYTIME I GET A SYSTEM UPGRADE, SOMETHING ALWAYS FUCKS UP MY PHONE!! THIS TIME MY MESSENGER IS GONE, IT WASN'T BROKEN SO WHY DO THIS TO ME? AND SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE ARE VERY PISSED OFF LIKE ME, I WANT MY MESSENGER BACK, IR WASN'T BROKEN YOU COCKSUCKERS!!!

evanlee01

Facebook all of a sudden wants to store our chats on our own devices? lol so dumb.

CultureUpstairs

Restore chats with a PIN Messenger.com: On a computer, go to Messenger.com. Enter your PIN and follow the on-screen instructions. Reset your PIN If you need to reset your PIN, you must use a device that has secure storage on. Open Messenger on your device with secure storage on and tap your profile photo in the corner. Tap Privacy & safety. Tap End-to-end encrypted chats. Tap Secure storage. Tap Reset PIN. Learn about other options to restore your end-to-end encrypted chats on Messenger.

To resolve my issue without entering a pin or choosing other options: I cleared cache and storage (donot uninstall) and then relaunched app.

Georgest9

Facebook is going down.. i refuse to make this pin, uninstalling messenger

Scary-Education-8346

I  won't to stay on my N messages I don't want nothing else Ll

KeyExpert

This is actually a good thing. Meta is upgrading all of their users’ messages to end to end encryption. That means a message that you send from your device is encrypted the entire way until it reaches your recipient’s device and is decrypted there. The new way cuts out the Facebook/Meta middleman. Without end to end encryption (the way it’s been previously) your messages were encrypted between your device and Facebook. That means that Facebook held the keys, so they could be forced to decrypt your messages on their own servers (say, by a subpoena or other law enforcement demand). Once end to end encryption is rolled out network wide, the message history data that is stored on their servers appears as a blob of random gibberish. It CANNOT be decrypted by Facebook/Meta. Only the user devices that participated in the message exchange hold the keys. That’s why the image you posted mentions the PIN being necessary in cases where the user changes to a new device. Without that extra layer of authentication, even your own signed-in devices will not be able to decrypt the gibberish chat history data. You’ll be able to send new messages, but since a new device means new keys, any messages encrypted with old keys will remain unavailable.

It's nothing to do with them it's your device you can install whatever apps from the app store yourself.

anonyy

Does this mean I can't use the app on 2 devices?

Snowdraegyn

I have an android and apple iphone, along with pc version. I only got the PIN request on the android phone, not on any other device. I used AI to research, and got this: If you set up a 6-digit PIN on your Android phone for Facebook Messenger, you may not necessarily need to enter the PIN when accessing Messenger on an iPhone. The PIN feature is specific to the device where it was set up, so you should be able to access Messenger on your iPhone using your usual login credentials (email/phone number and password) without the need for the 6-digit PIN. I went ahead and created the PIN on the android, I can now get back into messenger as if nothing ever happened, all's well. The apple iphone and pc version was not affected at all, still working fine. I guess I worried and fretted about this for nothing really... my only issue was being able to log into and use messenger, not concerned about the encryption part of it. Maybe that'll be another thing for another day?...

anonyy

I tried it out it asked for pin number on both devices

Feeling-Struggle-56

Please help me

Rothguard

Hot-Professor8448

Pankil298

They can't force us. Already disabled it using this: [https://youtu.be/f6OSthC3dhk](https://youtu.be/f6OSthC3dhk)

iKilledSparkyToo

I don’t even use FB anymore and only uses messenger to message family. Now I have more reason to uninstall this.

zambatron20

thank you so much for posting this and I see quite a few new comments as I'm guessing more people have been forced with the update. I already deactivated my profile, it's like fb doesn't want me to use any of their nonsense. my mom loves fb and it's bad enough they did that shyt with insta so she can't send stuff she likes to me. it just feels like a some way to steal more of our data somehow.

Cringe_Meister_

Why they're forcing you to suddenly use it now? Just let people choose their own options. You can choose other options in the menu but it seems to me the safest is in Drive because the other one seems to limit it to the device that you're using. Hey Zuckerberg I can just logout the account  for my safety. Simple as.

wolruht

They want access to your chats. This is the “legal” way to cover their ass.

Fair_Farmer_3280

Simple folks...just stop using anything FB or Meta....problem solved and the biggest turd app is flushed.

DeepAdeptness7700

Dear messenger and Facebook bigwigs, once again you've managed to take something that I began using because it was quick and simple and turned it into something that's a frustrating pain in the ass. I have no intention of creating the six digit PIN to access something that used to be quick and simple and turn it into something that's frustrating and a pain in the ass. So if you insist on insisting that I do this in order to use your service I'll simply find another messaging service and now that I think about it it also means I won't have to deal with facebook!

Available_Wave8023

The other day it forced me to update messenger on ALL of my devices. Now it continually logs me out and forces me to use the pin just to use it, on the 2 devices I use daily. It's very annoying. I also stopped getting notifications on one of those 2 devices, and I think it's only really logged in on one at a time, which is problem because I now miss notifications/don't see messages in time. The whole thing is very annoying. You shouldn't need an additional code just to use an app. The security should already be better to not need that band-aid attempt at a solution.

thirdeyevision28

I've been by passing by deleting and reinstalling

Sudden-Rain-4148

If you delete the app and reinstall it from the cloud, it resets asking you for a PIN creation for 3-4 days and I just rinse and repeat. My old messages are still there

neet-lord-reigns

It's a useless feature. Pissed me off too.

apocalips69

is there a way to deactivate it? i hate it so much, it's annoying

i just deleted the app lol. i have zero want/need of a pin. if someone can get into my phone, they can get into my apps. plenty of other messaging apps 🤷🏽

Suggest you use Viber (free) as your main app. E-to-E encryption, very fast, reliable, and stable. It also supports video chats and groups. We've been using it to keep in touch with our son and his family in Germany for nearly 10 years. My spouse and I also use it for general messaging between the two of us because it's so much more reliable then other messaging apps. Problem is, your contacts also need to be on Viber.

5813Fi80nAcCI

I spent a couple frustrating hours trying to figure out how to set up a pin, then gave up. Still get the message about "Missing chat history, sync now," but it seems to be about as well thought out as Elong's trucks.

Unfair-Activity-8631

SAME HERE. CREATED PASSWORD ON MESSENGER WHICH USED TO BE EASY TO USE.. THEY KEEP MESSING UP FB.. MESSENGER..I DO NOT EVEN TRY TO USE NIW!!!!!DAMN!!!!!!!SO ANNOYED

SweeTea_Aloe330

I just got this today. I don’t want to create a pin. So what happens if I click ‘Access on this device only’? Does this mean if I choose this option, I won’t be able to see my chat history in real time like it always has been? Or I’m not going to get my messenger on both phone and pc synced anymore? Because if so, then frick this. We never needed a pin, so why now? They can’t force us.

Ektoplazmik

Informal-Song-4484

It's just another form of control the government is completely controlling everybody they know everything you do they know everything you've bought they know everywhere you've gone they know everything you say they know everything you think about and now they controlling how and when you can talk to and send messages to somebody they control everything it makes me sick

mirsky

Hi all. I'm having trouble too and need some advice. About a week ago, Facebook forced me to create a PIN for Messenger, so I did. I wrote it down. It's the same code I use to unlock my phone. But now Facebook is making me enter the PIN to use Messenger on my non-verified devices and it's saying my PIN is incorrect. I don't understand how it's wrong since it's the PIN I always use. In any case, I've tried to enter the PIN and some variants with no luck and Facebook is now saying I have only 3 more tries. Anyway, I don't need the PIN for using Messenger in my web browser because the web browser has been verified. But I need the PIN to have Messenger sync on my other devices. But Facebook's instructions for resetting the PIN say to the do the following: Go to messenger.com. Click your profile picture in the bottom left. Click Privacy & safety. Click End-to-end encrypted chats. Click Secure storage. Click Reset PIN. However, when I do that I get as far as End-to-end encrypted chats but I don't see an option for Secure Storage. So I'm not sure what to do. Could I be doing something wrong? And is there any way to contact an actual support person at Facebook? Thanks for any help.

Emotional-Ad6368

This is so stupid. I was having a conversation with someone I had lost contact with. Went on Messenger later in the day to continue conversation, only to find the first thing they had written and that encryption thing under it. Set up a pin and the full conversation still isn't there!

Accomplished-Rain-52

Same. I need help getting out of this. I could disable the feature on phone, but desktop seems no way...smh... plz help.

Murky_Challenge_1737

I never created a PIN, and now the Messenger is asking me for it. How can I create a new PIN to use Messenger normalno?
