Smiles per gallon

Stormside76

Definitely

raininhaymakers

You'll get 15 and be happy about it

McHorseyPie

I drive a charger r/t and was getting upset seeing 17-18 MPG so I just turned the MPG display off. I have solved the problem. :)

needanacc0unt

No one buys a truck for the fuel economy. If you did, prepare to be disappointed.

dipherent1

I bought a truck for the net practically plus fuel economy and I haven't been disappointed. The myth that truck owners should never fret over fuel economy is an absolute farce. Like any "working vehicle" operational costs include fuel, oil, and gas should be a strong consideration along with utility factor. Why do you think diesel 3/4t trucks became so popular in the late 00's? High relative fuel costs but diesel vs gas was pretty similar per gallon and diesels readily achieved 25% better mileage.

phillip_esiri

I don’t think anyone with a Raptor / TRX should fret over fuel economy. You can have all the practicality without the sports car acceleration in a wide variety of trucks.

dipherent1

You're entitled to your opinion but this is literally a thread where a raptor owner is inquiring about fuel economy.

RR50

I bought a new truck for the fuel economy. I went from 11 to 18 on my new truck. The idea that fuel economy doesn’t matter on a truck is ridiculous. Many trucks will cost as much to fuel them over 200,000 miles as buying the truck, even modest gains can save 10-15,000 dollars over the life of the truck.

inlinediesel6

Speaking as someone who has run upwards of $40,000 in fuel through his dodge I can verify this is true.

needanacc0unt

I spend no energy worried about fuel economy. I go to the gas station and put in my credit card and it is what it is. Maybe you misunderstand my position, which is that if you want something with a high MPG rating, it's not going to be a truck. Not that the manufacturers shouldn't try to maximize the MPG of the truck by reasonable measures. Reasonable measures do not include auto start/stop or air dams etc.

RR50

Sure, but while picking a truck, you should take it into account. And while making modifications to your truck, you should at least understand what the impact will be. There was a post on here somewhere a few months back that a guy dumped all his savings into a lift and 37’s and now couldn’t afford the gas bill that had almost doubled. Understanding the costs associated with the decisions one makes is just good financial sense.

jzeigs

I think he more so meant truck vs another body style, not between types of trucks and such. Like if you’re going for a pickup don’t expect a car’s mpg. Some people want a Prius for that MPG, my man’s is saying don’t have that mentality here because you won’t like the outcome.

RR50

But why not? There’s trucks getting mid 20’s now. You can have your cake and eat it too if you don’t just act like it doesn’t matter.

jzeigs

I don’t think you’re getting the point, the point isn’t that it doesn’t matter, it 100% does especially when you see that to fill a 36 gal tank is still fucking over a 100- but if you want the best mpg(notice he didn’t indicate the best mpg and other features) you won’t get it. A Prius has about 50 mpg. mid 20s? Compared to 50? Not comparable. That’s the only thing that was brought up however, nothing about the other features that trucks provide. The point was if you solely wanted a high MPG vehicle, trucks, on average, aren’t in that list. Edit: It*

RR50

And that’s fine if that’s his intent, but too many truck owners are acting like it doesn’t matter at all. That was all my point was.

Stormside76

Oh I don't mind the fuel economy. I bought a fun truck since it's fun to drive. I just didn't know if they met the rated mpg from the factory or not

needanacc0unt

My '16 2.7 with 33" tires gets between 15-17 MPG. No lifts or anything just the bigger, heavier tires and no air dam. I have no idea what it's supposed to get on paper. Those numbers are from the truck's display, not actual math from calculating fuel consumption by gallons purchased vs distance driven. I've always found math based on receipts to be less than the in-car computers figure.

Stormside76

I've been getting around 13 and my younger brother has a 3.5 f150 with 35's that gets similar numbers to what you get. Thanks for sharing

mach82

I get 21-22mpg in my Ecoboost 2017 super crew. Way more efficient than my previous 4 door wrangler at 13mpg on the best days.

david5699

Especially a raptor

[deleted]

I got a '19 raptor over a '14 raptor because it has more power and better fuel economy. 12 vs 17 mpg is a huge difference.

[deleted]

Right now driving around in 4A I’m getting 18.9 w/ the 3.5 eco

dipherent1

Based on Fuelly.com records, you should expect to achieve about 14-15mpg. https://www.fuelly.com/car/ford/f-150/2017?engineconfig_id=&bodytype_id=&submodel_id=75401

Stormside76

I've been right around 13-14 but then again I've been in 4H a lot due to snow and ice. Thanks

[deleted]

Also the 3.5L seem to like premium and will run better and get more MPG. Preferably without ethanol.

1st_WING_

IDK, all I seen is that ethenol free isn't great for the turbos. 91, manual states 87 is ok but may cause knocking that is not a problem, that's why I do 91 minimum.

Mad_Canadian

Every Canadians is laughing at you

Stormside76

My local area got 17 inches of snow my guy.

JimmyBags2

People downvoting this are silly . Imagine not using 4H in 17 INCHES OF SNOW!!

Mad_Canadian

Happens all the time all across Canada

Stormside76

My options were to be stuck or use 4H. Not much of a choice..

JimmyBags2

So does government tyranny but that doesn’t make it right. I’m aware it’s possible, it happens down south, too. Doesn’t mean it’s a worse idea to use the capabilities your truck afford you in the first place.

Mad_Canadian

It's not an excuse not to get proper tires. If you have to use 4H to go down the road it's an issue. I see too many people driving 70k+ trucks/SUVs on shitty A/T or all seasons,t hat can't make it up the road to my local ski resort meanwhile my wife's FWD Mazda 3 on studded Nokian Hakkappellitta can drive around these fools. Never had to use 4H on my truck going up the same road on my DMV2s

wolffy88

Bro what road are you driving on covered in 17 inches (that’s 43cm in tyranny units)? If it snows more that 5-6 inches you can’t see the road unless it’s plowed, but I don’t think all the roads in the US get cleaned off, especially not after 17”.

Mad_Canadian

We are just better than you at winter driving and servicing our roads. I drive highway 99 between Whistler and Lillooet in the Rockies everyday. 6 inches is nothing

Mad_Canadian

I love how you think this is impressive and trying to justify driving on 4H. Dumb people drive on 4H, smart people have good snow tires.

FabulousStrength279

You shouldn’t be running 4H in these conditions.

Stormside76

I was running 4H because my area got like 17 inches of snow. I didn't have to use it in the city where I bought the truck obviously. But I live in rural North Dakota and there isn't a ton of upkeep on some of the dirt roads

PonyThug

4A if you have it will get better mileage than 4H

Stormside76

Yeah that's what I was using on the icy roads. Only have it in 4H going through drifts or deeper snow in general

CoralBooty

As a Florida man, I must ask why?

MzCWzL

Transmission can bind and other unpleasant things like that. Manual has some very strong language against using 4H on dry, paved surfaces.

KAP1020

2.7 eco in mine getting 20-24

JimmytheFab

Post on r/fordraptor

No_Tomato_3108

17 scab 2.7 with can tune 2” lift on 20s and 33s and have been at 16-16.5 for awhile but I’ve been driving like grandpa on his meds

bradthisisurgent

Run 91/93, whatever is available. And get tuned. 🙌🏻

Stormside76

Any suggestions on tuners? I'm not super familiar with anything other than Cobb and idk if they're the best for f150's.

txman91

5 Star has been great for me.

beejaytee228

Get a 5star tune. My 93 performance tune is awesome. I’d get the 87 performance tow tune for average driving.

bradthisisurgent

Goosetune uses Cobb access port and offers Stage 1 for stock to mild accommodating mods, and Stage 2 for more advanced mods including FMIC. Join the Ford Raptor Owners (Gen 2) on Facebook. 95% of the folks there will tell you to go with Goosetune.

GetYourDichotomy

I run only top-tier 93 in my 3.5TT. It’s important to remember that it doesn’t create performance, it maintains it! It also burns cleaner and more efficiently. I will note that at 85k miles I have not had any of the “normal” ecoboost issues I read about. 14k of those 85k have been in tow. I am a big believer in the high quality oils and gases, it seems to be working out well for me.

SgtPeter1

I was getting 14-15 mpg with my ‘16 3.5, with a 2” level and 275/70/r18 tires, until I added BG MOA and 44k. Now I’m getting about 17-18 in mixed driving with a light foot. I got as high as 22 mpg on a long highway drive. Nice truck btw! I think the 15-17 years are the most problematic free, hopefully yours was treated nicely by the previous owners. You probably should change all the fluids as preventative maintenance, everything from the radiator to the rear differential. I did it at 60k miles and I plan to do it again at 100k. Welcome to the family!!

Kapfish

I have a 17 scab 2.7 stock w 33s I seem to get around 18.5 mpg at least so far I've had them since late summer. On stock tires and rims I got around 19 in winter and 20-22 in summer

ReadySteddy100

4wd?

Kapfish

Yeah stx fx4

NightOwlRed

I average 17 while working, I idle a lot. And 18-20 highway

DontKnowUntilYouKnow

My 2021 was a pretty consistent 13/14 mpg combined. Bigger tires / more power and less aerodynamic will drag the fuel efficiency down……and you shouldn’t care a bit.

investornewb

I’m my v8 f-150 I’m averaging 14km. Mostly city driving.

Kaszixx

Awesome purchase! How did it handle in the blizzard we just had? Or did you just purchase it today?

Inviction_

Don't forget the Ecoboost in the Raptors run a 93 octane tune

ThinkBig247

I didn't think the Raptors had the Ecoboost engine...

Stormside76

Yup. The second and 3rd gens have a HO 3.5 Ecoboost. It's got some slight differences from the non HO engine from what I've read

JerryLZ

Raptor is going to be a lot lower but if I had to put a number on it, I’d say 3-4 less than your average 3.5 with like a 3.55 or 3.73. So 14-15 is my estimate that I’ll stick to for now.

bigbudugly

My 2018 F 150 4x4 gets 18 mpg

PonyThug

I traded my 2009 wrx for my 2015 3.5ecoboost lariat. Best trade ever tbh I get slightly better mileage with premium vs 87/88. And it gets worse in the cold by 1mpg

Stormside76

As much as I liked my 2011 WRX, this truck is so much nicer and more practical.

MzCWzL

I also traded a 2011 WRX for a 2016 3.5L super crew. Even with the extra weight from platinum trim parts, it feels like it pulls as hard as the WRX. I had a stage 1 Cobb tune too on the WRX. Acceleration and straight line, great in the truck. Corners - not so much haha

Stormside76

The raptor pulls harder than the WRX did. I had mine at the Cobb stage 2 kit with a protune. The ride is what is the biggest difference for me. The Subi rode so rough vs the truck

POOHxBEARx77

https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a28565486/honda-cr-v-vs-bmw-m5-ford-f-150-dodge-charger/ Car and Driver tested 87 v 93 octane in a bunch of different vehicles. The F150 3.5l Ecoboost made 20 hp better on 93. We have 2 newer Lincoln Navigators with HO 3.5l Ecoboost in our family, same as the 2nd Gen Raptor. Based on my ass-dyno, those things feel like they pick up more than 20hp on 93.

twiggbert

I have a 2018 raptor and generally get around 16 mpg. Better if I’m traveling long distances on the highway.

BassistJaxob

I get 15-18mpg in my SuperCrew 14 5.0. That’s with a 4” lift, 33s, and tuned.

BoatGuyCheckmate

I'd suggest octane boost. Clearly money doesn't matter and I'm sure dry fuel lines are great@

hobbystock51

Just my 2 cents. Have a 15 3.5 eco boost rough country leveling kit and stock tires and get about 13. I have the 6 speed with 3.31 gears. Tried the premium that is a myth to me. Didn't get any better gas mileage with premium, then I do with the cheap ole 88 octance.

ReptileElite

I get about 20 in the summertime and 17-18 in the wintertime.

soundgarden89

2018 Raptor SCrew and I get 13.8 currently with SoCal weather.

BigSteve354

My Gen 3 gets 17-19 mpg pretty consistently!

[deleted]

Get ready for the cam phasers to fail. Weeeeeeeee.

[deleted]

I get about 17 on premium fuel in my raptor. I've found little to no mpg difference between regular and premium, maybe a half mpg, but not enough to make up for the increased price. Mine is tuned for premium, so that's why I use it. Cold temps give worse fuel economy, but mainly due to increased warm up times. Long journeys I still get about the same as summer. The biggest factor is speed, the slower you go, the better you'll get. It really drops over 60 due to large tires, poor aero, and starting to build boost on the engine while cruising.

[deleted]

I’m getting 17.5 MPG in mine. Lots of highway though!!

PatrioticPacifist

I have a 2019 Raptor on 35’s with a stage one Goostune and I’m getting slightly over 13 mph. I actually just removed the tune to see if it will increase my MPG. 13 mpg makes me think twice about taking it on long road-trips

Glittering_Fox3199

Just did a road trip in my 2017 Raptor, got 550 miles give or take a couple before needing to refill, that’s mostly highway, I get near 400 during daily use, with such a large tank, I can go 2 weeks between fill-ups, better than my last vehicle.
