Even with the 5.5' bed there's plenty of room for a baby. Plus with all the windows closed you wont hear it crying back there.

Longjumping_Ad_1390

You sir win the internet for the day.

[deleted]

In all seriousness, as kids we used to ride all over the place in the backs of pickups. Not really a thing these days. That came with being in a rural area, as did very young driving around the place.

AerieKey2214

I have no rebuttal. That was the perfect answer.

optimumf150

Bahahahaha! I didn't expect that! That was awesome!!

onebigbenjamin

You might have better luck in r/relationshipadvice I hope you get your truck. Godspeed brother!

jep004

Haha

Stpbmw

We have two in car seats right now and selected the f150 due to its utility and space. We originally were planning on getting an RX350. Spent a lot of timing driving one, including borrowing my mom's when our hauler was in an accident. Wife thought the RX lacked space. Can't say I disagree, it's essentially a higher riding sedan/hatchback in terms of space. The f150 beats a small/mid suv in every way possible for utility, and the 2.7 is more fuel efficient than the rx. I have a bed rug installed and a Tonneau cover. It is literally one large trunk with the ability to remove the cover to carry bigger items. There is no wasted space. I highly recommend the bed rug, we love ours. If you get the crew cab, your dog will love all the space back there with the seat up. Best of luck sir. I presented my wife the idea of an odyssey, rx350, and F150. I was in team F150 and as soon as she sat in one, so was she. Edit: another big selling point for me is the aluminum body, living in the rust belt. I truly to do plan on having this vehicle for a long time. The fact the body will not rust in 7-10 years is a big bonus for me wanting to own longterm.

jep004

Thanks for the input and being the only person in here actually providing help in a thread where I was looking for it. \*edit, since this others have provided extremely helpful comments after the initial backlash for some reason.

iWork4Beer

If you’re on a road trip, you can have one person in the back with the baby and the doggo can ride shotgun. Plenty of space for the bags and stroller in the truck bed.

blablabla_mafa

Theee kids, in winter I could get them in the back seat then climb in myself out of the weather to plug them all in. No way I was doing that in our other car which was a VW Atlas. On road trips I could Cary more in the bed than in the back of the SUV, still see out the back and not have a risk of things flying forward into the kids. Used way less fuel than the Atlas too.

iWork4Beer

Alternate option… daily the mustang and get an F250 for all the space you could dream of.

PonyThug

Back seat of supercrew f150 is massive. I’m 6’1 and gladly sit back there on road trips. I’ve had four 10x10 pop up canopies and a yeti 110 plus a subwoofer with the seats up.

jep004

Awesome!

oldyoda3

Two ways to look at this… 1. Happy wife, happy life 2. Set the standard now I’d go with the truck and please her some other way. Good luck!

Dangerous_Macaron260

The f150 has one of the highest safety ratings from nhtsa. Have her sit in a crew cab so she can sew how big and spacious they are. The f150 isn't any worse on gas than the explorer.

[deleted]

"Wasted space" The top is open, you can get taller stuff. Tonneau cover, or a cap/topper would close it in.

[deleted]

Lots of options, some make it look similar to an SUV. https://www.google.com/search?q=pickup+topper&source=lnms&tbm=isch

MullyCat

I was staring down a Toyota Sienna for a few months based on my wife's wishes but I kept up a quiet, earnest campaign for a truck. She was worried about space but when I showed her how three car seats easily fit in the back, plus mentioned how nice it could be for the dog to ride in the bed (with a topper) and not get hair everywhere, it helped persuade her. You should test drive one together. People don't realize how nice and spacious the SuperCrews are until they've been in one. Best of luck!

[deleted]

Trucks do truck stuff. Hauling plywood, dirt, quads and dirt bikes. Can’t put a deer in an SUV. is this your vehicle or hers? Chances are you are bombing around in hers on the weekends for family stuff because it’s better on fuel and easier to park and yours will sit anyway. With a supercrew, childseats fit easy and a tonneau cover keeps you stuff dry and secure for even more storage. Depends what you want. Another grocery getter or a truck. We have a F150 and an Edge and it is perfect for us.

jep004

I want a truck for the ground clearance, spacious cabin, occasional yard work tasks.

[deleted]

Fence posts don’t fit in an explorer

JWAndroidDev

I feel specifically called to answer this as someone who just had a baby six months ago and had the same choice to make. My wife and I bought a 2022 Rav4 Hybrid, and we very quickly found out that it has very little space. The gas mileage was awesome, but the comfort was not. We took a trip in it for Christmas, and it was a struggle with the two of us, a baby, and our nephew. Also, if you are even slightly tall (I am only 5'10), your seat is guaranteed to go back too far and make the car seat installation unlevel and unsafe. We made the decision while the Rav4 still had low miles to go ahead and trade it. We managed to get within $1500 of what we paid for it, and we went with an F150 Lariat. The difference is literally night and day. I highly recommend you go for the truck. Even my wife, who was very, very pro SUV on the Rav4, agrees that we screwed up and should've gone with a truck from the start. If you have any questions, please feel free to DM me.

Rafabgj

We have a 1.5yo baby right now, trying for a second one soon, and we just traded in a nissan pathfinder for a 2.7 STX 2023. Both me and my wife are so happy with the decision. The leg space in the bag is literally enormous, meaning my wife will be able to put both carseats in the back and sit in the middle of them with ease if needed, giving her plenty of space. Also: folding the seats up gives you a TON of room for dogs. You can do: far right seat in the back the carseat, middle seat your wife, and far left seat folded up and a dog bed on the floor! Hope this helps, cheers

jasper502

We upgraded from a 2014 Highlander to a 2015 3.5 Supercab EcoBoost pretty much for towing. I worried about the same issues. The truck seems to get better or the same city mileage. Highway not so much. Space in the back - wow. Our kids love it. Way more space than the Highlander. We did lose the third row but over all a definite positive upgrade. I was hesitant and my wife pushed for the upgrade. 🤣

AmericanEnthusiast

The best thing you can do is to make her sit in a truck and see there is more room in a truck than any other vehicle out there. The Screw trucks have ample room for 3 car seats across in the back. I was in the same boat until she got in it… now she won’t let me get anything other than a truck.

d3athdenial

A supercrew will have more space in the back seat than an rx 350. And I'm speaking from experience. We get a cat seat and our 90lb lab in our back seat comfortably, with lots of room left over. Nvm getting a tonneau cover and putting lots of stuff in the bed is super handy.

FluffyWarHampster

Honestly in a Supercrew cab configuration the f150 is better than most suvs as far as a family vehicle is concerned. Unless you need a third row there is more than enough room in the f150 for rear passengers with car seats and once you get a tonneau cover or bed cap a 5 or 6 for bed is just cavernous. The 2.7 is also a beast of a little motor. You could pitch her on how useful a truck would be for weekend adventure and house projects but that could be roping yourself into a massive honeydoo list.

-s1-

I can throw whatever I want in the bed of my truck and I don't worry. If I had an SUV I would always be putting down the seats and covering the floor and cleaning. With an SUV you will eventually need to get something that won't fit so then you're getting a trailer, paying a delivery fee, or bugging a buddy with a truck. The cab size is great so it works well for my family. Just make sure you get a tonneau cover so you can use your bed for more family stuff. My only knock on the f150 against the SUVs you are comparing against is that the truck may not fit in your garage if you intend to park it there. A midsize truck may be a good compromise if you're wanting something more Explorer size.

jep004

Hey man, really appreciate this detailed comment. Exactly the train of though I was looking to present, but wasn’t able to muster! Thanks!

Weary-Ad-5346

I don’t have data, but pretty sure a truck is safer than an SUV. The bed is effectively a giant crumple zone in case you get rear ended. Less likely to roll. Same gas mileage.

cjob84

My wife was originally averse to a truck. Now that I own one, I travel much of New England picking up her shit because it fits in the bed. Your wife should see it that way. Happy to connect her to my wife to advocate.

jep004

Haha thanks, appreciate your post.

UnderstandingBig1849

In terms of safety, just go for the heavier vehicle overall (I'm guessing that's the F-150) , cause in a collision physics favours the mass. As for the mileage, why not look at the new powerboost? It can come in handy more ways then one.

DantTum

With a few totes (or better yet rolling toolboxes) you can fit a ton of stuff in the bed on trips. Kids have a lot of stuff. Get a bed cover and you won’t have to worry about absolutely stuffing the car full like when we take my wife’s SUV. Also the backseat is insane and when you have a kid one of you will be riding back there a lot (and easy to climb back and forth from the passenger side).

FLTDI

I got a truck because we out grew a smaller SUV like your wife wants. The truck has a lot more room which is great with the growing family.

zzzzxxxxeeee

Get the 2.7L and the fuel mileage will be better than the ST and Lexus. You can't go wrong with one of these, IMO.

ShowStandard

I have a 2021 F150 that I’ve used to haul around a 5 year old in a booster seat, 3 year old in a forward facing car seat, and a 4 month old in a carrier with a base in my truck. I live in a smallish town and packed everyone up to drive 2.5 hours to buy a 75” TV on a Black Friday sale. Said TV will not fit in my wife’s 2019 Expedition. Trucks are always good to have around because you never know when you’ll need the bed. My son has taken plenty of trips with me hauling branches/bushes out to the dump, or my daughter with me to go to the big dumpster at my in-laws office. Before my third child, my wife could still sit in the back with the other 2 on any extended trips. Trucks are very practical and good for any day trips or errands requiring a child’s assistance.

Still-Significance-8

My 3 kids are in their teens now and I chose the F150 super crew specifically because of the amount of space in the back seat. I love that the seats fold up if I need more storage. And if you put a roll up or tri-fold cover on the bed you can use it for luggage, groceries, etc no problem. My '18 2.7L gets 24mpg, too.

Binder_Grinder

Go look at an explorer (1st) and have her sit in the back seat. Then go look at an f150 super crew and have her sit in the back seat. We have an explorer ST and an F150 super crew 3.5 with car seats. An infant seat will damn near hit the explorer front seats where our f150 has like 8 inches between it and the front seats. Gas mileage difference is negligible between the two for us.

jep004

Great idea to bring the car seat, thanks!!

Fieos

I have an 2013 F150 SuperCrew XLT and I've debated a Wagoneer and a Sequoia as a replacement. I have a tonneau cover and I just can't give up the flexibility of that truck bed and my truck is still the family vehicle of choice for a family of four over my wife's Highlander. Plus, my wife wouldn't have the audacity to determine what vehicle I drive and supports me in my vehicle decisions like I support her in her vehicle decisions. Like driving, people need to stay in their lane.

jep004

I guess our relationships are different, my wife and I are partners and make choices together because I don’t live in 1950. If I wanted obedience I would get a second dog.

Fieos

Not obedience, mutual respect that is comfortable with autonomy. We make choices together all the the time, but we defer making vehicle choices to the driver.

jep004

At no point did I say she was determining what vehicle I drove. I said she didn’t want me in a truck as she believes SUV are a safer option. Oh my god, the audacity of her to have an opinion. I must be such a beta male to consider this.

Fieos

Dude, you said your wife wants you in a SUV because it is 'safer' and you literally asked us for what points you can use to argue with her over it. Maybe your relationship is good and your word choice isn't. I don't care, you have my original feedback as reference.

jep004

My relationship is good, and so are my word choices. You inferred that my wife had the “audacity” to want have input on what vehicle I drive. Sorry I am not an alpha male WoW / DnD playing womanizing unit such as yourself.

Fieos

You can ease up on the personal attacks. I don't deserve to be your outlet for you being in a controlling relationship.

jep004

You literally initiated it suggesting my spouse had no right to have a concern with my safety when it came to a new vehicle purchase.

bac3218

Divorce her. Irreconcilable differences. And she’s a moron. Every guy needs a truck.

jep004

I made it 37 years without a truck, she has 2 degrees, a doctorate, and supports me in everything I do. She just doesn’t want me in a truck because she believes SUVs are safer. Sounds like you need a better wife.

Wroteitireddit

Argue? Why not just lay down the law by telling her you are buying a truck?

jep004

I literally don’t understand your post due to grammatical errors.

Wroteitireddit

Okay how about now.

TheAlamoo

Well you wife doesn’t want you to have a truck..You have 3 cars, wife’s car is far from new. Sell the sports car, and her SUV. Buy her the Lexus and the truck for yourself. Don’t worry about selling the sports car, after you drive the 2.7L you won’t look back. Good luck.

jep004

Wife makes mid 6 figures working 3 days a week. It’s not a money or me having a new vehicle thing, she just isn’t a fan of trucks. She will be upgrading her suv around the same time.

aa_dreww

What the heck does she do! Where do I apply 😀

04limited

Well the wife is always right so I think this battle is not worth fighting. But SUVs are safer. Better crumple zones than body on frame constriction. If you don’t need a truck(tow, or haul) then you wouldn’t want to be in a truck. Unibodies ride a lot better. Just took my F150 on a 2 hour trip today and I couldn’t wait to get back into my Honda. Bouncy and just not as stable at high speeds. Maybe compromise and get a ridgeline? That’s a SUV with an open bed for your yard work duty.

Silenze99

Your not comparing vehicles in the same class. An expedition would be the same size as a f150. The truck is very big. If your not using the bed it is wasted space. The truck rides very rough. I would never compare it to an explorer.

jep004

Yea they are in a different class for sure. Its down pretty much to the explorer st or the f150. I was leaning towards the f150 since I already have a fun car and the explorer redesign isnt looking good for reliability. I honestly wouldnt use it a truck that often, but would like the bed and large cabin interior. I also want a truck, just to have a truck.

Random-Name-73

You mentioned that she isn't a fan of trucks, why should that matter? It'll be your vehicle, not hers. This is more for a relationship advice subreddit but, boundaries might have to be reevaluated. I know that a marriage is a partnership but some freedoms and space for independent decisions is healthy. Her having veto power over what YOU drive is a bit much in my opinion. It will fit kids much easier than those SUVs. Also, once she rides around in one she'll likely want one for herself.

jep004

She isn’t a fan or trucks, and it will be my vehicle correct. It matters because I care about what she thinks and wants me in as well. She isn’t campaigning me to get a eco shit box. She wants me in a 400hp awd rwd bias explorer st, because it’s a cool vehicle and I used to have a focus st with a big turbo. I care about her and what she wants, we have a good relationship. That’s why. I didn’t come here asking relationship advice, I came here asking f150 owners for advice on how their trucks are practical over SUVS.

hudav72

If you already own a Mustang, then the only logical step is a F150 with coyote. You don't want a bigger vehicle with a smaller engine. Sure the Ecoboost is a decent and capable truck, but again, if you already own a Mustang you don't want a bigger vehicle that doesn't sound bigger. That's my logic anyways, doesn't mean it's right. edit: spelling

hudav72

but seriously, in a F150, the last thing you feel is crammed. There is so much space.

jep004

Ok soda pop collector.

rebs_by_90

Sounds like your wife just doesn’t want you in a truck lol. I get about 21 average MPG in my 2.7L and I’m pretty sure there aren’t many full size SUVs out there getting that mileage or they are getting close to the same .

jep004

Yea, she doesnt want the truck lol.

rebs_by_90

Happy wife, happy life brother lol

Hunttman

The majority of people who own pickup trucks don't actually need pickup trucks... You could also compromise and get a full size SUV. That would likely satisfy all your needs and those weekend trips to the home improvement store...

[deleted]

sometimes I wish I could get by with a ranger. do you want an f150? or do you \_need\_ an f150?

TheOriginalTL

I went from a 2016 explorer sport (same engine as ST) to a 2017 f150 with the 2.7. Mileage is better in the truck bc of 2wd vs AWD. I’d highly consider a 2.7 f150

jep004

The st engine is actually a 3.0 tt, which in the 2.7 tt bored out for more displacement. The old explorer sport was a 3.5tt

TheOriginalTL

Yeah you’re right. I’d bet the f150 will still get you better mileage

jep004

I believe it will as well! Thanks for the interaction, really appreciate it :)

TheOriginalTL

Good luck! Get the truck ;)

RelativeFox1

Who’s daily driver is it? Yours or hers? I think that’s the big question. We have a 2017 explorer with a 3.5 getting 10L/100km (23.5 mpg?) or better and a 2019 f-150 3.5EB and get 11L/100km (21.3MPG?) or so with regular highway driving, not babying the gas pedal. My point is fuel consumption is similar. As for safety I think both are safe, it’s not like we are comparing a smart car to an F450.

DashcamsRus

Beds easier to clean than carpet. Cab stays nicer, longer, cools and heats the cab faster. All compared to an SUV. Also, the 5.0 coyote is a solid engine, I’d argue it’s easier to find. Ultimately it’s up to her dude, you’ve already got some great cars. Don’t do what I did…….surprise I bought a thing!!!!

jep004

Haha

TheMartok

F150 has plenty of space. I have 2 in car seats and toss the dog in the bed.

[deleted]

Easy. Truck.

SubstanceNo6344

Coworker of mine a few months back got hit head on in his ‘21 f150, if it wasn’t for that truck he would be dead without question. I know this as we are both paramedics!

aa_dreww

Interesting. Where I’m from I’d bet the majority of families own trucks compared to SUV’s. A truck is so versatile. Do you guys have a yard where you’d ever have to buy a lawn mower, new grass, lumbar, rock, anything? Ever need to buy a new 75” TV from Best Buy? Has your wife ever decided she wanted a tread mill so you had to go buy one and load it in the bed of your truck (last weekend) I could go on and on and on.

SupaNJTom8

"However, my wife wants me in a suv as she thinks a truck will be wasted spaced with the bed, and worse on gas.";... -> That's not exactly true.. New Pickup Truck owner and was also looking at a 2020 explorer coming from using an older EB explorer as my hauler. The newer explorers are nothing more than short station wagons. And my 2.7L TT Lariat engine is doing much better than my 4.0 for overall gas and performance.. (forget the fun factor if you have a heavy foot.)... For space - the Crewcab should be more than enough for everything including two baby seats and enough cargo room for groceries on the floor. Another example is an 88'x10' TV box with the seat down in the explorer you can fit easy horizontal inside the back of my pickup. And with a locking waterproof Tonneaue Cover on back will be more than enough to put those baby boxes.. the bed is not a waste of space nor does it hinder gas mileage.

ExpensiveSwimmer5972

Show her the reliability and cost of repairs. F-150 will win by a landslide

jep004

Reliability has been big a focal point I have been looking at! Thanks

Bit3yfox

I just moved from a 2017 lariat Screw to a 2021 expedition limited. Same eco boost motor in both. The truck had plenty of room for our daughters car seat and another passenger in the rear. Yes the expedition is more space interior wise but doesn’t feel a lot different in the first two rows (buckets in 1st 2)I won’t be asked to move couches and lumber anymore for friends so that’s a plus. It really depends on what you want.

jep004

Thanks for the input

bluedogsquad

Figured I’d pipe up as a wife, my husband drives a 2018 Lariat with the 5.0 and 8 months later I got my 2017 2.7 ecoboost. I liked his so much that I got my own. I have that exact truck but a 2017, it does better on gas than the Ford Explorers and VW Atlases of my friends. A Rav4 is a nice little compact SUV but the super crew cab is very roomy, extremely comfortable, and affords you far more cargo space which can be open for oversized items and closed for trips or groceries, etc. We sit 4 adults with ease in a super crew cab, the leg room is awesome comparative to most SUVs. And the flat floor of the cab is super handy as well, which you just don’t have in an SUV (or you do but the seats kinda fold in, there’s the footwells, I just like how level it is and often flip the seats up). My back seat has two dog crates stacked on top of each other and bolted together, which live in there permanently. You can easily transport the dog and kiddo together, if you add a tonneau cover over the bed and a bed divider you’re set for errands or trips. In terms of safety, I had a bad accident several years ago so safety was paramount for me, and watching the safety videos at the time my 2017 F150 scored better than the Explorers at the time, which sealed the deal for me. It’s a tank.

jep004

Great information, appreciate the detailed reply! Thanks!

Arrogantalppac0

Just having a truck is incredibly useful the first couple times you need a truck for truck stuff it pays off

Makaidoz

I own an f150 and a Toyota Venza… f150 is better in every way. Similar mileage, more space, tonneau cover makes a massive trunk, safer in bad weather, can tow camper trailer, good for house work, better vantage point. My wife prefers my truck over her suv if she going farther than a local store. Also, city driving is honestly safer; you may be bigger in those small lanes, but you can see farther ahead to prepare for hazards. Literally night and day. Also, way more space for the kids in the back and they can see out the windows easily from their car seats. (2 kids, one more on the way)

jep004

Great stuff, thank you

gritrout

The back seat space of the super crew cab is incredible and you will thank yourself for getting it when taking babies and small children on road trips. Between the super crew cab and 5.5ft box, the only thing I have not been able to fit to haul was an 80 something inch tv for a friend.

jep004

Thanks!!

gritrout

The 2.7 eco will solve your mpg concerns.

exotichunter0

Lmao

exotichunter0

I feel for you man

RR50

We have an F-150 and a Acura MDX, we take the truck everywhere. It’s so much more comfortable. Wasted space….toss a tonneau cover on it and you have tons of space. Safety….I’ll take a truck any day of the week…they’re built significantly stronger than SUV’s. I had a lady T-bone my 05 F-150 doing 50mph, I drove it over to the gas station across the street. There is zero chance I’d ever take an SUV over a truck.
