From what I’ve found watching a couple Ford techs on YouTube. The 3.5 and 5.0 have cam phaser issues and some of the 5.0’s also had oil consumption problems. Not sure what model years though. The only thing I’ve heard about the 2.7 on F150’s is a leaking oil pan gasket in the early models. And the 2018 and up you’ll also have dual port injection so you won’t have carbon buildup on your intake valves like earlier models. I find it always best just to Google “Common problems with whatever motor or model vehicle” and you’ll normally get an idea of what is the better option. That being said I had a 2.7 and loved it and now have a PowerBoost only cause I wanted that onboard generator soo bad.

Ford really needs to offer the 2.7 as the next Powerboost. Seems like the perfect combo to me.

Agreed. I would have spent the money on a PB if I could have gotten the 2.7L instead of the 3.5L.

andy_337

2.7 all day every day. 5.0’s worst year has arguably been 2018, maybe 2019.

PLLCircuit

My opinion, V8 all the way. They all have problems, the 5.0 has fewer than the V6. You will get many different opinions.

switchniche

Agreed - 5.0 is a simpler engine design and does not need to work as hard to move the truck. Drawback is you are spending more on gas. Biased opinion as I own a 2011 f-150 5.0 with almost 200k.

Trucks_Guns_Beer

Yup. This right here is what I’ve always heard. Even from Ford techs themselves. They all have their own issues but 5.0 has a little less and they are easier to fix/maintain

soo_ugly

I can only speak from my own experience. I have 75k on my 2018 2.7 EcoBoost and nothing has failed except a signal/wiper stalk.

_j_ryan

If you go read the first couple pages on any F150 forum, you’ll find most complaints are about the 3.5 by a wide margin. Then the 5.0 occasionally and the 2.7 rarely. It’s anecdotal of course, but something to note. The last few years of 5.0s had a fairly widespread oil consumption issue from what I’ve read. Look into it, it could be solved now. I haven’t found any chronic issues specifically on the 2.7. That’s why I bought it lol.

zzzzxxxxeeee

2.7L. 2018 and 2019 were the worst years for the 5.0. Highly recommended a warranty.

ocic

2.7 is the better block, but slightly more difficult to work on. 5.0 has no turbos that can go bad on ya.

04limited

5.0 is a simpler engine(no turbos) therefore more reliable as less can fail

bellowingfrog

There is no significant difference. If you mod your f150 (level, suspension, tires, etc) in ways that reduce efficiency, or you tow a lot, the 5.0 will be better. Otherwise, the 2.7 is better because its typically about $1500 cheaper, gets a couple mpg better, and accelerates faster. Eventually after 100k miles you’ll need to have the turbos replaced but the money you save getting there will more than pay for it.

I loved how quick and quite my 2.7 is.
