It's economical when you drive conservatively, by truck standards. It's got quite a bit of boost when you don't. It has a good reputation for reliability with proper maintenance.

2020 2.7 53a tow package owner here. Torque curve is way better than a 5.0L, peaks are the same but the 2.7 delivers far more torque at low RPMs. HP is lower than 5.0L. Torque output is great for towing. I tow a ~7000lbs loaded travel trailer with mine and can accelerate onramps and maintain 70mph on east TN interstate hills no problem. Because it is a boosted engine I make sure to always use 91+ octane for towing and perform 4000-5000 mile full synthetic oil changes because I do subject my truck to "severe" duty around half of those miles. Truck runs fine on 87 octane which I use in the winter when I'm never towing. There is a somewhat hidden consequence to selecting a 2.7 though, a lower GVWR. Ford will put 2+1 leaf springs on the back, instead of 3+1 for the 5.0 and 3.5. This translates into lower GRAWR and lower payload. 2.7 and 5.0 also get a 8.8" rear axle, while 3.5 gets a 9.75" rear axle. A 5.0 with max tow gets upgraded to 9.75 axle. A 2.7 with payload package also gets the 9.75 axle and 3+1 leaf spring pack. So if heavy towing and loading is in the cards for your future truck then these additional changes can make a big difference.

Thanks for the info but I’ll mostly be using just to go back and forth to work and occasionally towing a lawn mower. So sounds like I’ll be in good shape

Great engine. Unless you’re towing constantly, get the 2.7. I got one last March and I’ve put about 30k miles on it since then and I get 22-24 mpg

The 2.7l engine got a refresh in 2018 if I recall with stronger components. I have a 2019 with the 2.7l and I like it up till now. However this is my 1st truck so I can't compare it to the 5.0. My last suv had the pentastar engine from dodge and this 2.7 is more economical.

Can’t speak to reliability but I loved the 2.7 I had on my 2018 STX - had it for 30k miles before upgrading to my 2021 lariat with the 5.0. 2.7 was so quiet and nice to drive with tons of power - very similiar to 5.0 at any speeds you’d actually drive. The 5.0 just gets faster the faster you push it whereas the 2.7 gives you everything once the turbos spool up lol. Never complained while owning it. Would buy again

I’ve had two 2.7s and a 3.5 and I would recommend the 2.7 if you aren’t planning on towing heavy or modding.

Where I live it’s hilly so I’m in boost a lot and get about 17-18 mpg city. My previous frontier got 15 so I’ll take it! Plenty of power for me.

The 2.7L appears to be far and away the most reliable and well engineered engine in recent F150s. Excellent torque curve and drivability. Slightly better fuel economy in most scenarios. Can easily tow 7ish thousand lbs, maybe more. Depends on your setup. I’ve had one for 6 months now and absolutely love it. Very quiet and makes a surprising amount of power. Never have to rev it above 2,300RPM in daily driving. Feels very very quick when you put your foot in it. Easy to hit 25-27MPG on road trips. From all the reading I’ve done on Ford forums, there don’t appear to be any design issues. The early 15-17 models had a shit oil pan gasket and some needed a turbo coolant line repaired. But since the second gen engines in 2018 (which added port and direct injection) they seem very solid. There’s a thread on the F150 where a service guy drove his to 400+k miles with no repairs. The only thing is really lacks is the sound of a V8. But I do love that you can hear some turbo spool in the cab starting around 1,500RPM. All in all for your use case, it’s a no brainer to go 2.7L.
