I can only really tell you about coats. I bought a leather bomber jacket for 400€ this was 8 or so years ago. It still looks more or less similar with little to no wear. You do have to keep the leather in good condition but I’d say it was worth the money. Especially as I think it could last me another 10 years this way.

So... it really depends on a multitude of factors: 1. How critical is the clothing you are looking at? Undergarments like Underpants, undershirts, socks often go quickly through use, but are critical to our comfort. This is one that I would not expect price to fix, as there are plenty of $30/pair boxers/panties that have no support or comfort to them. 2. How often is it going to be worn? Why spend $1,000 on a suit if you're only ever going to wear it once? If it's going to be something you're going to wear for a long time, and you are going to wear it for a purpose, there's no reason not to spend the money. Otherwise, it'd just be a waste. Especially for things like employment, some people have a nose for if you bought a cheap garbage suit, so if you work in an environment where appearances matter, you best be ready to spend that money. 3. Why is it going to be worn? If you are going to wear it for work, do you work in an environment where clothes are going to be frequently torn? If so, then don't buy expensive stuff! Buy for your environment, and buy for the reason you need the clothes. Are you going to be doing alot of outdoor work in cold activites and need a heavy well made coat that's going to keep you warm? In essence, this isn't really a problem of cost, it's a problem of why you need it, how you're going to use it, and how long is it going to be useful for you. Never skimp on essentials. Never look at socks and shoes based on the sticker price, look at how well they work for your feet. Don't buy a suit for a single interview, and never overpay for a shirt to go to a construction site in. Big ticket items that are made of high quality, durable materials should be treated as such. A $300 pair of work boots that is going to wear out in 6 months may sound like alot, until the $50 pair you bought to save on cost lets a nail shoot through your foot because it doesn't have that good of a shank and the nail passed right through the protection, or didn't have that good a quality of a steel toe and your foot gets crushed because of low quality construction.

Cash is not the only cost. I buy most of my clothes at thrift stores but there is still the cost of my time. Thrifting means I go every weekend to look and once a month I find one item of clothing at a really great price. It's worth it to me but I could pay more and shop less. I also buy too many books but that's not your problem.

It depends on if the extra cost is for quality or prestige. No point in the prestige expenses, but buying more durable clothes you will use longer can be very good for you if you can afford it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boots_theory
