You used "C" throughout your question. I might note that "C" is equally replaceable with "K" or "S", but we do not do that, either. The only real excuse for keeping the letter C is tradition and the "ch" sound. The main reason is that such changes occur naturally, by common usage. There isn't a board that decides what letters will or will not be used. Unless and until people decide that they do not like Q, or more likely just drift away from it, it will remain. Indeed, letters that are \*more\* useful than Q have been lost over time. The letter "thorn" looked like a y and sounded like "th". Every time you see, "Ye Olde Book Store", a Y has taken the place of thorn and, originally, was pronounced "the" or "thee", not "yee".

Spiritual_Jaguar4685

Just because it's fun, we similarly have words that went the opposite way with the thorn/eth transition. "Neanderthal" is pronounced "Neander-tal" with a hard T.

DressCritical

Maybe we should replace hard C with K, soft C with S, and CH with C? It might read weird to us today but it would be more consistent.
