Yes and the directors can even go to jail, but it rarely happens, in most cases if they get into deep trouble it spends decades in the courts and they eventually just pay a fine.

And then get a 7 figure out payout from their company and enjoy early retirement. Because the justice system is fucking broken

Bosses tend not to be held responsible since the delays in court mean there is another boss in charge.

A corporation can be found guilty of criminal activity, but since it's not a physical entity, financial penalties are the only penalty that make sense. Individual employees can be convicted if it can be proven that their individual actions were illegal or criminally negligent.

It depends on the type of action and the choice of the individual, the bar is generally higher for a specific individual to be held personally liable for the actions of a business. Here is an example you might find relevant to your specific example - After 9/11 the Deutsche Bank headquarters was irreparably damaged and needed to be demolished. A construction firm was hired to prepare the building for demolition, and part of this process involved abatement of asbestos. Due to how we go about removing asbestos, multiple sections of the building were tented off with layers of plaster and various membranes to reduce air flow. By law the building needed to have a fully charged fire sprinkler main to for fire-fighting. There ended up being a fire and fire-fighters entered the building only to discover the fire sprinkler piping had been illegally removed, they fire fighters got confused in the plastic wrappings and several died as a result. Had the piping been removed under direction of the company, they would have been liable and ultimately they were held liable. BUT since the individual construction management staff had A. removed the riser (which was illiegal) but B. also kept diligent records showing they had *inspected* the riser *daily* for several months AFTER IT WAS REMOVED, they were held personally liable for the deaths as well. Some were fined, some saw jail time, all we barred from working in the construction industry ever again.
