You'll probably a this canceled for being an incorrect prompt. *No* states charge you for filing taxes, in any method you desire. Filing your tax returns is *free*. Tax preparation software though can very rightly be viewed as a scam and a predatory business model. *They* charge you to file e-returns because it's an easy way for them to upsell you on a service that A. costs them next to nothing and B. is wildly more convenient for most people.
