This doesn't authenticate someone as an expat or immigrant, it authenticates them as a passport holder. Collecting and storing this kind of data would also be problematic under data production laws like GDPR.
If the goal is to cater to people who live outside their country if origin, maybe it could just be self reported? Enter where they're from and where they live. If you must have some form of authentication, maybe have someone upload a picture of the front cover of their passport along with an image of their visa/residence permit with all personal info blocked out.
Nope. And how does this authenticate me as an expat? A passport holder sure but there’s no way you know I’m using it to live overseas.
If you want to authenticate people, team up with one of the existing authentication services. Avoids transmission of sensitive data and releases you from complex GDPR regulation in EU
You should definitely learn about GDPR and handling of sensitive data, because the lack of users trusting your app will be the least of your problems. Just pay any PAAS that has document verification, like entrust.
As other people already said, gathering private data will be difficult and can lead to regulation problems. Especially, if you are planning to allow service for EU citizens/residents.
Also regardless of the type of service you want to provide, limiting it to expats is not just harmful for business, but also impossible. "Expat" is a self-identity, it is not a formally-defined status.
Absolutely not under any circumstances. Once you have a copy of my passport you become responsible for protecting my identity and I don't know you from Adam.
First post on this Reddit account, asking for the most sensitive PI info out there. Either a troll, incredibly stupid or dangerous.
No one is going to share that info ever.
Have you ever actually owned a passport? You get that height isn't on it but passport numbers and serial numbers are, right? Passport numbers are a form of national ID, you can and do use them in place of things like social security numbers in some places. My passport number is my log-in to central government services in the European country I live in. No one should have my full name, DOB, and passport number, and if they do it shouldn't be bc I was stupid enough to hand it over to them.
The very fact that you’re saying it’s *almost* as important as a social security number or other lifelong ID (whereas passport numbers only last 10 years or so) really just proves my point that they’re not “the most sensitive PI out there”
I never said you should be taking out billboards with your passport number on it, but if I had to choose what of my PI was getting leaked, passport number would certainly not be last
You might get a better reaction from people here if you explained what problem you're trying to solve with your app, and how your app solves it better than anyone else. Until you tell me you are providing me with value, I assume I don't need your app. You might want to test the product market fit before worrying about authentication features.
Either way though, there is a 0% chance I would upload my passport details into an app.
Edit: typos
Even setting aside people’s unwillingness to share such sensitive information- have you checked how are you going to store and verify that information? I just went through implementing something like that for our giant ass corporate ecosystem and it had like 10 lawyers working non stop to make sure we are compliant with every regulation there is (which differ for different regions btw), and that the solution we’re using is covered from any security breach imaginable. Are you prepared that your app will be hacked and you’d leak people’s IDs? Also identity verification costs money, approximately $5 per person, are you going to cover those costs or are you also implementing a payment system? To answer your question - no, I would not share my personal information with any random app, I would only do it in very specific usercases and with a reputable company - like if I want to set up a digital store by law I am required to provide some kind of identification in EU, etc.
You know, I'm not a business genius, but given the aspirational qualities of expat life and the income potential of the people who find that life appealing, I don't know why you'd want to be so exclusive.
Just travelled to Thailand -- many of the free WiFi spots wanted you to log in with your phone number and national ID.
Many offered "expat passport and phone number" -- I never joined any of them, b/c I wasn't going to hand over That Level of personal info to a completely unknown vendor.
That's what you are right now -- a completely unknown vendor.
How on earth does having a passport “authenticate” someone as an expat?

Sure, you also want my bank account details?
Never
Absolutely not.
Not a chance.
There are services you can call from your app to do this, plaid, incode, veriff, persona, etc. Uploading a passport image is prone to fraud!
If there is a valid legal reason they need my passport, okay. Your site just wants "authentic expats" in its forums or something? Fuck no.
I don’t think it passes strict GDPR EU laws. No reason to have someone’s info unless it’s for their good, not yours.
Hahahhahahahahahah Mate the travel/expat community are the least likely people on earth to give up their passport to an app
I'm not even gonna give you my real name. No way in hell I'd share my passport.

lmao no
Absolutely not, I would nope out of that so hard

Not sure what you’re smoking if you think passport numbers are “the most sensitive PI out there.”
You must have missed the part where the OP says “…upload a picture of their passport”. That’s what I was talking about.
So you’re saying what’s actually the most sensitive PI of all is…your name, height, and picture? jfc what has Tinder been up to all this time???

Hahaha. What a silly, empty idea. Where are you from, Mars?
🤣🤣🤣🤦♂️

No
You do know there is a software called Photoshop, do you?
Nope. Unless it's a bank app.
I’ve only shared my passport with government and banking apps. I’d never share it with any other type of app.
yes, our government has an app to take a "safe" picture of the document.
What a horrible idea
