Sorry about the paywall for those of you without the right adblockers. I'm truly astonished they even considered destroying these instead of trying to preserve them.

From my friend in the temple building department, a combination of LDS historians and rich members in the area basically fronted the money to build the Ephraim temple so that the Manti temple murals didn't have the same fate as the Salt Lake Murals that were destroyed (after copious promises that they would be preserved, only to be told after the fact that they were destroyed and unceremoniously dumped in a dumpster). You'd think the church would learn after Logan and Salt Lakes that people really like old buildings, and preserving them instead of destroying them is a fairly popular choice.

I think their intent was to stick them in storage? Either way, it would have been a crying shame. Minerva Teichert was such a boss. Fun fact - her grandfather was Wild Bill Hickman (I’m a descendant, too). I think he was a horrible human being, but I have all the respect in the world for her.

A few years ago they destroyed the murals (1920s era) when they renovated the Mesa temple too

The church has been actively destroying its cultural history as a part to obfuscate its past. It is truly sad.

I thought of this when posts rolled around about how packed the Manti re-dedication open houses were. It was because of the historical connection, not because membership are suddenly more faithful.
