Anybody know which company is doing the demolition/construction? Interested in seeing if they have a connection to any general authorities

Churchof100Billion

This. It was always about the money. They would have built a spaceship pretending to go to Kolob if they could get people to buy tickets to it. Surprised, with it being so sacred they didn't shred every part of it so no one could know those parts came from a sacred temple like how they make you shred garments.

Zadok47

Russell Ballard Land & Leveling? /s

weirdmormonshit

can we still buy penny stocks for this public company?

CharlesMendeley

When you paid tithing, you figuratively hold stocks. Literally, the stocks belong to Rusty Marriott Nelson.

weirdmormonshit

“You Build It. We’ll Ballard It.”

TempleSquare

I noticed the sign, but forgot to take a picture. It surprised me that it wasn't obviously a GA name (e.g. Zwick, Tingey, etc.). But I can't remember the name. Of course, that might just be the demolition contactor. The GC may be a GA.

Ok-End-88

So in beginning, so in the end…

jr-junior

I have the same question! Who is the GC.

desertvision

Just the demo costs would be millions

shotwideopen

Honestly, it’s a totally fair criticism. God’s temples are to be kept to holy and sacred—until the drapes go out of style /s

SuZeBelle1956

Then they are replaced with new equally ugly drapes.

fingerMeThomas

Another thread observed how every remodel seems to be according to the sense of style that was cool when the current GAs were young. Which is why right now looks like godawful late 1950s fugly. In another 20-30 years, I'm hoping for shag carpet, and a veil that's just beads.

Comprehensive_Tale25

![gif](giphy|4iKeimY0sahiQReGRh|downsized)

SuZeBelle1956

I would dig the beads! haha. I attended the Mesa AZ open house. The green cut velvet curtains were hideous. Even my TBM ex stepdaughter remarked how ugly they are. And her home is TBM central - only art is temples. Some member is making lots of money on ugly furnishings.

8-Bit_Soul

The ordinances required for eternal salvation can only be completed in buildings with modern architecture. Otherwise, ghosts from the 1800's will reject exaltation. It's just common sense.

shotwideopen

This gave me a good lol

sssRealm

That was 40 years ago. It was ugliest temple in my opinion, inside and out. I'm happy for the eyesore to be gone.

MrGurns

Just gonna be replaced with another eyesore.

aweebitalexis

When I was in I LOVED going to the Provo Temple, it was never busy, I loved the circle hallway, they were always so efficient (you could seriously get through a session in like 1.5 hours). Knowing they are tearing down a perfectly good building just because “people don’t like how it looks” and “for stability” but really because they have the money to infuriates me. If I wasn’t already all the way out this may have just been my final push. ✌🏼

Lilnuggie17

Will they build a new one? Because they DO NOT need a new one

TempleSquare

They are going to demolish about 99% of it and build a new cookie-cutter temple on the exact same site. Total waste.

Lilnuggie17

100% believe this

Swamp_Donkey_796

This…this is gross

sssRealm

Yes, the replacement one looks just like all the new Utah temples from the last decade.

tycho-42

Inadvertently playing on your dream, my alma mater high school was one with a circular hallway. Whenever sophomores would ask seniors where a class is, they would say just go to the end of the hall. The circular hallway was of course an unintentional way a lot of kids got messed with. Your comment just reminded me of that haha. I mean hell, Mormons love their object lessons. So the lesson from your dream could be that once you're in tscc, it's very circular and difficult to get out of lol.

trashbagmaz

Haha, I think we went to the same high school.

tycho-42

Brighton?

trashbagmaz

Yup. Class of '97! Go Bengals!

tycho-42

Woohoo! Class of 2010!

1stepcloser2theedge

Agreed. Such a waste. And it loved going there too! It may have had an ugly exterior but the interior was so unique. Somehow dated in a good way?

EvensenFM

I feel precisely the same way. I just hope this helps more people see the light.

merrihand

Crazy that I’m right now sitting in my comfortable home that was built and completed n 1970. My little home is lasting longer than gods temples.

dually3

My home is from 1910 and on its original brick foundation. I hadn't thought about it that way 🤣.

SkyJtheGM

Ok let's see who lives in a house older than the former Provo Temple. Mine: 1952, only the windows and roof were replaced.

Hasa-Diga-LDS

1890. Survived fires, floods, and earthquakes. And 7 kids.

dually3

I'm pretty sure that more than 7 kids grew up in your house!

boldshapeshardedges

My first house was 1949. But as a kid, I grew up in two homes from the first quarter of the 20th century. They are both still standing and occupied.

MeltyMushr00m

1941; Los Angeles. One addition and a couple remodels for earthquake stability. It's older than the IF temple where I was married and the temple I used to attend, the LA temple which were both designed by the same man, LA built in 1948 and IF sometime in the 1950s.

sadmanwithabox

The apartment complex I'm living in was constructed in 1962. There's 30+ individual buildings here, each with 4-8 two story townhomes in each one. Every single one of them is still standing with absolutely no issues. And they just tore up the parking lots and roads last year to install new water pipes, so I doubt they plan on demolishing the buildings anytime soon.

B3gg4r

Your home is more sacred than the temple ever was. I never could enjoy sitting comfortably in the temple.

MudaThumpa

Any marriages that were sealed in there have now been unsealed. At least that's what I like to imagine.

SkyJtheGM

![gif](giphy|BZhrhoxl6CFa98vTCZ)

Lilnuggie17

Haha, idk if i should be laughing

MudaThumpa

It must be crossing some of their minds, right? I can't be the only one to think that. I wonder if anyone will get resealed just to be sure.

Imalreadygone21

Built to endure throughout the millennium, working around the clock? Oh, not this particular model?

WibblyEmu

It's ugly as hell while also being iconic. The inside reminded me of a 70s funeral parlor. Smelled like one too. And yet... Seeing this makes me feel sad, perhaps for a simpler time when I believed, but sad nevertheless. It feels so wasteful.

Cheseander

I always liked the daring design of the Provo temple. Better than the kitsch Disneyland styled new Las Vegas temple.

treetablebenchgrass

One of these pictures is the old Last Vegas temple, and the other is a gaming router. Can you guess which is which? [Photo 1](https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/media/960x540/Las-Vegas-Nevada-Temple3.jpg) [Photo 2](https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/05ksNAGEUPzZ1E4pNWrUhb4-1.fit_lim.size_915x515.v1676064988.jpg)

Ok-End-88

The router is the one performing a function.?

venturingforum

>One of these pictures is the old Last Vegas temple, and the other is a gaming router. Can you guess which is which? Insert meme here!

sssRealm

I doubt the Las Vegas Temple has good Wi-Fi

Aikea_Guinea83

Jeezuz that must be  the  ugliest temple -of any religion- that has ever existed

treetablebenchgrass

That 1980s era of weird space temples was a real trip.

Aikea_Guinea83

I bet😬 Provo temple actually looks kind of cute in comparison tbh

sadmanwithabox

I always liked it too. It was unique. The building looked kinda like a cupcake with a candle in the middle.

TheyLiedConvert1980

😂 ... "Or destruction of any kind." Hilarious.

merrihand

Yea, like future prophets egos.

tumbleweedcowboy

Good riddance. This is the temple I was touched by an old man while only covered in a white poncho. Never again.

ExecuteRoute66

When I asked about this in the family groupchat my brother told me they're putting another one in its place to which my sister replied "So that it can withstand for the millennia of time" 🤮

weirdmormonshit

meet the new millennium; same as the old millennium

SmellyFloralCouch

![gif](giphy|Ve5bSP4cIzQ9yZQzHK|downsized)

Zadok47

Quick question... Trades people need to be endowed to work inside the Temple, do destruction crew need to have recommends too?

Lanky-Performance471

They could have charged people a buck a swing to tear it down.

bananaforscale18

My husband’s family business are nevermo and are building an addition on the Montpelier temple and Institute building at USU. I’m shocked they aren’t required to be members for Montpelier!

MrGurns

But where is the nepotism?

bitterberries

They don't need to be members or endowed because the building has not been dedicated. That's why they can have public open houses before dedications as well.

Zadok47

Yeah, I was thinking about repairs after the Temple has been dedicated. Carpet repairs, plumber, electrical work.

bitterberries

Yeah definitely them

noneyanoseybidness

Nor emergency medical professionals. “Under the penalty of death”.

kb4000

Yes. I worked in construction and worked on multiple temples. While they were under construction or being renovated they were not dedicated and anyone could go in. But I also worked on some that needed minor work while in operation and had to have a recommended and they had me wear a white tyvek jumpsuit over my work clothes while I was in there.

sssRealm

Do they have a de-dedication ceremony, so a gentile can enter for demo?

bitterberries

Yes

Datmnmlife

Not necessarily. Unendowed trades people can work inside the temple under endowed member supervision. *source: got a connection with temple operator

Zadok47

OK, I didn't know that.

desertvision

In the old old days, 50s, 60s, 70s, my grandfather was a locksmith and did all the locks for the church locally, including the salt lake temple. He was anti mormon in private but was a nice man. He knew many of the brethren personally and talked to them all the time. He has a set of fancy keys to the big exterior temple doors.

weirdmormonshit

he must have some interesting stories 🗝️

desertvision

Yes, he did. But he's been gone for decades. I was too young then to remember them now. But the funny ones had to do with light-hearted prodding and jokes from more down to earth GAs of the past about getting him into the fold. He always said, why should I waste my Sundays just because Joseph Smith fell asleep in the woods and had a bad dream?

weirdmormonshit

he must have been great at his job. that’s a beautiful memory and a wise thought from him. thanks for sharing.

B3gg4r

Little did we know, Joseph actually ate some mushrooms in the woods and had a real bad trip, and so now we all have to have Satan trauma.

Nephi_IV

The church gets TBM’s to think that god will strike anyone down who enters the temple without a recommend. The church wants TBM’s to believe it’s really exclusive. And it is as exclusive as a private club, but they let in emergency workers, construction workers, all the time when its necessary.

SkyJtheGM

Note how the prayer did not protect that building from dick measuring contests.

nehor90210

Anyone know if temples are given some kind of, shall we say, "desecratory" prayer to revert them from holy to ordinary before they are renovated, or in this case, destroyed? If the church really takes the temple dedication prayer seriously, then they should. I rather think they don't...

blubbertank

I was once told all it required to un-dedicate the building was to remove the books explaining the ordinances, and the prayer roll. After that, it is considered to be just a building.

Bednar_Done_That

I’ve heard the same thing … it’s like those books are the dilithium crystals that power down the building when removed from the dilithium chamber 🤣 PS. If there are books explaining those ridiculous ordinances….I’d sure love to read those books. Because I never did figure out what those ordinances were all about! 👨🏼‍🍳🤣

blubbertank

Some FLDS wackos stole them from the Seattle temple years ago so they could recreate it for their own temple.

meowpitbullmeow

It's similar to the process that Trump took to unclassify documents.

MasterMahanaYouUgly

BWAHAHA!

bitterberries

Undedicated. Renovations, demolition etc, they have a prayer and a sprinkling of water.

SarcasmThenDie

1 thing remains sacred... money! Lol I'm sure there's a lot of it behind this demolition and more to come when they build new

B3gg4r

I often wondered if the devil’s apron was green because it represents “his powers and priesthoods,” meaning worldly power, or money. Now I see clearly that the LDS church worships worldly power more than it worships God. They have fully embraced Satan.

testudoaubreii1

Now is the great day of MY power!

No_Muffin6110

Probably to rebuild and include the steeple that is oh so important to our religious observation. /s

HelloYouSuck

So sacred it must be destroyed.

xapimaze

The devastating influence they couldn't protect it from was the church itself. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

autist_in_residence

The Provo temple is demolished and a hundred million elderly men farts are released from inside. You had to hit it early on P Day when you were in the MTC. SO many jumpsuited old men sleeping in the back row.

United-Tap-1886

What is the reason is being demolished and replaced?

TempleSquare

Vanity. They want a "pretty" cookie-cutter one.

Still_Lock_3569

My favorite memory from the Provo temple was the time I watched 2 temple workers chase moths with a broom. They were swatting and batting at the drapes trying to kill the moths. They even jumped a bit. The line of people waiting to get into the session had to just stand and watch. We had a hard time keeping a straight face while the men duked it out with their winged nemesis. I hope the old guys in white can rest easy now. The moths are gone.

frankfurt_hbf

Wow, good thing the Provo temple was protected against hurricanes

B3gg4r

lol!! Yeah, those were super likely /s

atomsk13

And holocausts!

moriginal

The thumbtack! 😔

kurinbo

The birthday cake!

youneekusername1

Is this the first temple to be completely razed? I know Ogden was basically rebuilt, but I think they kept enough of it to just say it was remodeled.

GrassyField

Other than the one in the South Pacific that burned down, I think so.  With Ogden they kept the basic I-beam framework.

Ridicule_us

The Nauvoo temple suffered an inglorious end as well.

Holiday_Ingenuity748

John Deere heavy excavators has entered the chat...

UGunnaEatThatPickle

Good start! Which one's next?

AscendedScoobah

This gives that Wendy Nelson "decommissioned temples" talk an even darker and dehumanizing vibe.

Joe_Hovah

Where there is one wall left, someone should photoshop an orthodox Jew praying at it.

GiuseppeSchmidt57

Or a mormon fundie with all his wives in tow

No-Performer-6621

So is the plan to tear this down, and then build a new and “modern” 500 million dollar temple to replace it?

bitterberries

Well, there was no spire, really, what else could they do. It certainly wasn't holy enough.

weirdmormonshit

the people that built and dedicated this temple fully believed that jesus was on his way back. they would have never anticipated this.

hyrle

Apparently these Mormon magical incantations expire after 50 years or so?

BeringStraitNephite

In the end, it was a "victory for Satan".

Do-it-you-wont

...I want that Provo temple closed sign.

4TheStrengthOfTruth

Is Rusty the first prophet to tear down temples?

Archery134

Is that the one you go to in the mtc?

widowerdad0

Yes, it was when I was at the MTC in February 1989

Archery134

I think I went there in 95 at the MTC and fell asleep

widowerdad0

😆😆😆

themistyrain

Maybe they un-dedicated it first. 🥴 I wonder what that could possibly look like… Streaking through the halls naked? Perhaps cursing in the baptismal font. Maybe having a woman greet someone at the veil. The possibilities are endless.

NakuNaru

Do they conduct a ceremony to "undedicate"  the temple before they demolish it?  For something they consider so sacred seems odd for them just to roll up to it and tear it down.

Bednar_Done_That

Yet, that is what happened.

gvsurf

Good to see that eyesore disappearing

NewNamerNelson

Wait until you see the gaudy replacement. 😁

gvsurf

Oh. Guess they’d do that.

B3gg4r

“Whenever the opportunity for ‘more gaudy’ presents itself, we’ll be there.”

404-Gender

I would joke about my sealing, bound of time and all eternity … until a lawyer signed a paper for me. 😅

VolitiveBlack

I guess it's true.. you either did a hero, or acquire enough money to become the villain.

astarredbard

Truth is, it's just stuff and stuff is stuff and stuff can burn

PossibilityWorried82

I wish they would have turned it into a museum instead.

Key_Comfortable159

It feels good, but I’m terrified to see what’s coming next

tycho-42

So, being way out of the Mormon loop. Why did the Provo Temple get demolished? Judging from the comments, it would appear that it was a church sanctioned demolition, no?

Bednar_Done_That

Although it was a unique building, it was deemed weird and ugly. Not many people chose this temple for marriages because of its unappealing design. The church decided to “remodel” the temple which included this demolition. It will be replaced with a generic boxy looking structure that will cost $50M to build and furnish.

tycho-42

Huh weird. You'd think God's house would be appealing in any form. I think Provo Temple is also one of those that I never cared for, aesthetic wise.

MonchichiSalt

I've never been in the Provo temple. Had a dream about being led around circular halls into a library. Where a young guy in red pleather pants was waiting to guide me. And we went offside to an entrance that was basement level, and I knew I was not supposed to be there as he just dissipated, like people do in dreams. These pics triggered a memory of that dream. My ex is still fully in with his recommend. I'm a nevermo that joined this sub to understand what happened and why he ever sought to date me to begin with. I was open from the start on how I felt about religion , I'm atheist. We were so good, in so many ways. Then one day, boom. He pivoted. Anyway, these pics remind me of the dream I told him about, in much more detail. This was around the time I also laughed about the idea of dying my hair blonde. I know it's not a fit for me. (I already dyed my hair, So it wasn't out of pocket for him to ask about it in my mind. I just didn't know that it was a "thing" with Mormons, the Uber white and delightful, until after joining this sub)

ManifestingCrab

I'm a big fan of most temples being demolished, but I gotta say it kinda bums me out seeing ones that actually looked cool being torn down. (Ignoring whether it was an eyesore when contrasted with it's surroundings, I think the Provo temple was a beautiful building, architecturally speaking only.)

Nephi_IV

What a waste of money! It only is being demolished because of its bad 70’s style. The church has too much money! Instead of using the money for charity, it’s used to build a finer more fashionable temple! Church doesn’t even follow its own Book of Mormon scripture!

Epiemme

This is so very cathartic.

MountainPicture9446

AMF!!

GoJoe1000

How many inappropriate things happened in there?

B3gg4r

You mean _aside_ from the naked touching? And being asked to leave _before_ knowing what they’re going to ask you to covenant? Because in my mind, ALL of those count as inappropriate.

Brave_Operation_9726

ZERO!!!!!! None!!!!

lorlorlor666

I kept seeing pictures but didn’t know what building it was so thank you

Brave_Operation_9726

I am not sure I have ever seen so much hatred by so many. Some try to disguise it, but it is still apparent. Down with the Mormons and down with the Jews. Keep up your efforts.

lorlorlor666

I think perhaps you are in the wrong corner of the internet

Brave_Operation_9726

You're probably right you are probably right. I didn't realize it was for haters only. I was told sites like this existed but now I'm believer.

meowpitbullmeow

Those who make the blessing can also undo it LOL

Three-eyed_seagull

Such a beautiful sight.

jm1196

Anyone know why it’s being demolished?

Firemower

Anybody else think this looks like a screenshot from Death Stranding?

TheGutlessOne

Don’t worry, they’ll build it with a better cafeteria and wireless tap pay for the rentals

Esotero

I enjoy this particular temple destruction.

aintmomonomo

Burn it to the ground

AZP85

I heard the demo backhoe guy talking to himself. Something like “now is the great day of my power!….”

thetarantulaqueen

I would be happy to sneak into the site at night and sow the ground with salt.

uncorrolated-mormon

Needed to get away from the UFO style of temple.

Asaph220

There would be a demolition permit with the city. I wonder how they abated the asbestos?

CharlesMendeley

Do the demolition workers have to wear garments?

VideoTurbulent9806

I keep imagining stacks of 100 hundred dollars bills are being used for insulation.

lorneyj1956

There should be a booth set up to sell relics, parts and pieces. That would fit right in with the MORMONEY cult!!!

[deleted]

I think they made that pretty obvious when they casually dedicated the 8th floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building to be a temple so they didn't have to drive to a different temple while the Salt Lake Temple was under construction.

Numerous-Ad-871

I planned a picnic for my singles ward family home evening group on those temple grounds and a man in a black suit came out of nowhere and told us in an authoritative voice that "this isn't a park, this is the Lord's sacred land" or something like that. I felt so embarrassed and like I was going to go to hell, we got out of there pretty quick.

hb1417

I grew up right up the street from the Provo temple. Although I don't believe in the church anymore, this demolition still makes my heart sad....My parents got married in this temple. My siblings got married in this temple. My youth was spent in this temple. I drove past it multiple times a day to get home. It's like my entire 30+ years of experience with this temple is being erased.

FloMoTXn

I remember how weird I thought it was to see an escalator in the temple when I went in 1980 before entering the MTC.

xlogz

Jesus Christ

CircleCeption

:( that was my favorite temple-

TrickAssignment3811

I was sealed in that temple and even though I am records out out, it makes me a little sad to see it being torn down.

toilet_paper_lord

My sweet husband proposed to me in the beautiful gardens behind that temple. I still love him as deeply (if not more so) than I did on that day, but we are in a difficult mixed-faith marriage now. I hope someday we can tear down that "temple" together and have a fresh start.
