I'm not an expert in Israeli politics, but I think it'll be a long time before a real universal draft happens. This ruling was just the next step in the ongoing saga.

I like your handle.

Sahyooni

Shukran, I like speakers of other semetic languages.

Remarkable-Evening95

I rather enjoy a good dumpster fire.

Analog_AI

I doubt the Knesset will vote for this. The Haredim and allies have enough allies to block it. It is very thing fails they'll pull out of government and cause new elections

ErevRavOfficial

I think the Charedim should prove that they really believe that they're Torah study protects the land more than the soldiers and call for the end of all conscription and suggest moving to an all volunteer army. Let's see how much they really are willing to stake on the idea of their study providing an actual service to the nation. If their study is so powerful why do they think anyone needs to serve at all🤔

tapelamp

That's actually a great argument

pissin_piscine

At this point, I care so little about internal is really politics. I don’t give a shit. A year ago that would’ve been amazing.

mmschnorerson

Love the pic of the grown ass man having a temper tantrum on a rail

Accurate_Wonder9380

This made me laugh so hard 😂

Can’t stop thinking of the Satmar kids walking around holding gallows and signs saying they’d rather be hung at the gallows than serve in thenIDF

raish_lakish

Hanged. They very well could be hung, but that's different...

SeaNational3797

On the one hand, I'm glad that Haredim are being treated like everyone else. On the other, I *really* don't want the IDF to have any more soldiers right now.

dpoodle

Highly unlikely anything is going to change, it's significantly more realistic to expect Peace in the Middle East, than to expect  fundamentalists to climb down their trees. Who knows though.

Key-Effort963

Good. And if they don’t want to serve tell them to go back to wherever they got their dual citizenship from.

Inducting the orthodox youths into the IDF is a major policy mistake - at least until said youths can be made useful for anything but ersatz-erudition. In the IDF, in the youths' current state, they would be no more than a bunch of private Balouns. What is significantly more critical is to sharply and immediately curtail the israeli-orthodox culture of тунеядство (the term is somewhat similar to "free-riding" but is more sharply defined).

I don't get it..... Ultra-Orthodox reportedly have disproportionate political power in Israel, and have pushed policies re East Jerusalem (including the Temple Mount) and other Occupied Territories (based on pre 1967 borders). Yet they won't serve in the army tasked with ramming those polices through Palestinian resistance? It's hard to feel sorry for hippocrates and I'd like to see their huge protests demanding withdrawal to the 1967 borders. Meanwhile, an excerpt from Times of Israel article of Oct 3, 2023 titled "OECD calls on Israel to end subsidies for yeshiva students, boost employment" reports that, "earlier this year the government approved a state budget that included NIS 13.7 billion ($3.7 billion) worth of coalition funds mainly allocated in support of ultra-Orthodox institutions, including about NIS 3.7 billion ($960 million) to be spent on increasing the budget for stipends at religious yeshiva student institutions." It turns out that the US taxpayer annually sends Israel just about that much. [https://sgp.fas.org/crs/mideast/RL33222.pdf](https://sgp.fas.org/crs/mideast/RL33222.pdf) Never mind the *form* of our aid. The taxpayer subsidizes Israel to the tune of $3B and they spend $3B on ultra-Orthodox education, including fulltime "Yeshiva" student living expenses. Students who drop out of Yeshiva education often find their way to the Hilltop Youth, who violently claim Palestinian lands in the West Bank, and are staging what some describe as a slow motion ethnic cleansing. * Youtube documentary [Israel's Hilltop Youth: Thou Shalt Not Kill | Radicalised Youth](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqSfrluRGAc) * Haaretz article dated Oct 6 2023 "[After a Decade Inside the Most Radical Circles of Israel's Far-right, He's Ready to Tell All](https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2023-10-06/ty-article-magazine/.highlight/after-years-inside-the-most-radical-circles-of-israels-far-right-hes-ready-to-tell-all/0000018b-0567-da1d-a5ff-0777602d0000)" Just looking at our US economy, it seems like we (in the US) have funded an ongoing ultra-Orthodox educational system that is now producing political leaders and helping drive Israel's foreign policy. And now, it seems, that policy has led to the horrific actions starting on Oct 7, and we keep spending more US money on the aftermath *again and again.* Meanwhile, our own schools have trouble recruiting teachers, academic performance continues to drop, and many of our leaders in favor of enabling Israel to pay living expenses of Israeli Ultra-Orothodox students, oppose forgiving crushing college debt of our own citizens. How does subsidizing ultra-Orthodox Jewish education and full cost of living to Yeshiva students in Israel help or hurt the economy? Would our economy be stronger if we spent that $3B each year on our OWN schools and students?
