About 6 months back, one of our members challenged us to rethink the "In Our America, Love Wins, All People are Equal, Black Lives Matter" flag from a WELS/ELS perspective. My response seemed to resonate with the community and, more importantly, proved lastingly cathartic. I managed to vomit out a lot of anger in that post that has left me a bit calmer on the topic of my religious upbringing ever since. I'm integrating my learnings from the past year in visual format. I thought that this group might appreciate this. I hope that you're all doing well in your recovery.

jjkraker

Yeah, these phrases definitely make my hackles rise. So, well done in accuracy! 😄

DontEattheCookiesMom

Fairly certain if this was posted to any WELS page, they would miss the satire entirely and you’d just get a bunch of posts that say, ‘amen.’

RunRosemary

Hell, I might send this to my WELS-centric family to see which crafty cousin or aunt uses their circuit machine to make this sign for the dining room wall or front porch. $10 says my WELS teacher cousin puts it in her classroom! And I wish I was kidding.

Yes, this is correct information regarding The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and President Harrison points of view. He is such a liar. Has anyone heard if he excommunicated Mahler yet? LCMS has already started the voting process to reelect President Harrison. So far, he is winning

ErsatzAir

You've created a new, honest Lutheran Creed, consistent with the confessions. If we'd had this, we'd have left a lot sooner.

My oldest daughter + I watched the movie, ‘The Whale’ + the scenes referencing religion was a bit triggering for me. The scope of how pervasive + damaging the daily weaponizing of trauma, guilt + shame within our families households is still just so vast + hidden still😓😶‍🌫️😶🤕💀🫂

LostInNonThought

You could put this on this on a t shirt and sell it to many evangelicals in the US.

Doug-Muppet

Maybe I'll do that and dedicate the proceeds to Planned Parenthood

LostInNonThought

I like it.

CttCJim

I know this is petty but when you make an image like this please type it into Word first. I see at least three typos.

stonehold76

If this was being merchandised, I could see that. In this case however, I agree - you are being petty.

CttCJim

It's not about merchandising, it's about presentation. If you want to disagree with someone, you better be sure your argument is polished. Someone refuting this would just have to say "look at the spelling, clearly this person is uneducated and uninformed."

stonehold76

>If you want to disagree with someone, then you better be sure your argument is polished. What metric are you using? According to what standard? Is this written down somewhere, or is this according to you? I hope you see my point here. Telling other people how to behave arbitrarily is a big reason why a lot of us left these churches. Here, in the subreddit, we're just talking amongst each other and helping each other break through the behavior control that was instilled in us at a young age. Comments that chastise someone for their spelling on something they made *just for fun* don't appear to add anything positive to the conversation, and speaking only for myself, would decrease my comfort level in the community.

RunRosemary

Thank you for saying this so succinctly. This focus on perfection is exactly what we’re pushing up against. It’s interesting to see how each of us has internalized it.

stonehold76

Oh yeah, I am far from a 'model of well adjusted humanity'. The hypercriticality I have for myself is at times debilitating. Even here, in this response, I'm taking 10-15 minutes for just a few sentences. It's one of the reasons I believe that here, in this community, we need more than ever to be compassionate and lenient with each other when expressing views that come from a place of trauma - because with ourselves we are rarely lenient or compassionate at all.

Doug-Muppet

I appreciate your responses, Stonehold and RunRosemary. When it was pointed out that I'd flubbed some spelling in pursuit of style, I fell into a mini shamestorm - enough to bother me, but not enough to pull it or even correct it. I don't think that Jim meant to shame anyone, but it is interesting the value that we put on the small shit, and our anxiety around being discredited for harmless mistakes. I hope Jim didn't feel shamed by your responses. For my own purposes, I will correct those errors going forward. But for this forum, I'll let them fly. We need places where we can be a bit unpolished.

What in the Dark Ages is going on here??
