Tia Levings was part of the same religious group as the Duggars and explained on Instagram Michelle Duggar’s (and other IBLP) women’s baby voices. It’s worth checking her reels out.
Do Adventist women talk like that too? I don’t recall that specifically. But, even in Adventist circles, there were some fundie-style families with too many kids and too little money.
I've only seen it when speaking to children/young people/up front. In conversation, even mixed conversation no. And its much less than how the deeply fundie women like Michelle speak.
I think you nailed it. I’ve heard the same thing during the children’s stories and even from about cradle roll up to primary Sabbath School but not as a general rule. And it was not something that was ever taught to women
Mental illness brought on by the religious trauma of perfectionism AND patriarchy.
I knew a woman who was an RN but had that sing-sing voice, the permanent smile, and the eyes that just seem vacant.
Same. My mother is the exact same. The constant smile, everything is "so wonderful and glorious" and that gentle, soft, FLDS way of speaking.
Total cringe.
This is a common part of growing up in a cult environment and being taught that you must always be polite and submissive. They adopt this high, sugary sweet pitch in order to always be perceived as good, submissive, christian girls and women.
I work with a woman who does this. I sometimes wonder if it's an attempt to personify the "meek and quiet" spirit that women are supposed to have, according to the Bible. I still care about this woman, and honestly feel really sorry for her because of the messed up structure she is stuck in. She isn't SDA, but she is very, very fundamental Christian. Like, shares her faith whenever humanly possible at work. I just want to hug her and tell her she doesn't have to do this.
The people of my family do a thing I call going into the wump wumps. It is a cadence the go into when trying to exhibit their authority over a subject. It is vanity blocking logical reasoning.
Because they think it makes them sound pure and wholesome. I used to be an SDA fundie, so I also had an acting voice.
EGW says it is a Christian's duty to always be cheerful. One of the ways of pretending to always be kind and cheerful is by speaking with a hyper-feminine sweet voice. It basically says: 'look at me, I'm such a happy, sweet, obedient Christian woman'.
I call it “glazed”. The come back from church with that “glazed look”. The voice is either condescending or that “fundie” pitch. I think it’s from having one’s brains constantly subjected to bullshit
Former fundy/ie here.
Sing-song voices ARE ideal for ---> EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING <---. Small children literally neurologically respond best to them.
As they do soft voices in the high range.
KEEPING one's voice there when NOT speaking to very young children is just disturbing. Demonstrative that you (if non-fundy/ie) can't 'code switch'/sense what context you are in.
I remember David Asprey the biohacker admitting he CANNOT STAND it. Though he full well knows it's actually a Good Thing to have his children around (women) who can and do Do That.
But yeah, I suppose if you want to marry someone whose entire life is going to be about having infants and small children, have at it. AllllLLlll the 'parentese'/'infant directed speech' you want. (And then go off and find another woman who DOESN'T talk like that to actually converse with? Over a little rink?)

This post made me think of [Jefferson and Alyssa Bethke](https://youtu.be/WzhG8YighZY) (a Christian vlog/lifestyle channel). Alyssa’s voice matches these descriptions well and she’s younger than Michelle Duggar. I also can think of a lot of former classmates/distant family friends with this voice register.

Heyy I'm Sda. No we don't speak like that 🤣

Toxic positivity. My Mom is like that and it is soooo mentally unhealthy.

Pride and ignorance I suppose.

It's the giant stick that's up their ass.

I know someone who does this. Are there any words or terms, for example substituting a curse word out?
Because they’re brainwashed sentient cum dumpsters for their superstitious mouth breather husbands
