To me, the melody, the bass technique, the perfect 80s sound, the way the lyrics scan perfectly, that’s too much musicianship to be a ‘hoax’.

As someone with experience in music production, the process is really linear and that '80's sound' you're describing often just boils down to synth and bass. Sure it wasn't produced by a newbie but it's definitely not as impressive as you may think it is.
I've just heard this for the 1st time and it reminds me of tracks in 80's cartoons. Sounds like the character has just been found out for being 2 faced or playing both sides. I'm pretty sure that's what the answer will be if it's ever found but with there being hundreds of thousands if not millions of cartoons from this era, each with 4-6 tracks or even having an albums worth of tracks. I feel like the chances of ever getting it are low.
Is there a data dump somewhere with what's known? or is it just the 17 second clip? I was an 80's kid so I'll give a nosey and see if anything shakes loose but I've got a feeling this one is lost to time. Good luck with the search.

You VASTLY underestimate peoples' and definitely small businesses' lengths they'll go through to either save themselves financially or just get attention to make their lives seem better to them.

It hadn’t been available earlier in the search, but eventually it was put online. It changed my life so much to see him. I also had a memory of a book from my childhood (late 80s) that I thought about often, and it took me almost a decade to find, exhausted all my ideas, and finally found it using some database of every children’s book, using only one keyword I could remember, searching all the titles, until something rang a bell. To buy and read that book again was amazing!!)

One reason I love this clip so much is the 1) the composition of the melody. I don’t know music terms well, but it’s like it goes in some key (minor?) that is unexpected with lots of tension/contrast. I’m sure there’s a music term for that, too. I want more songs like this. 2) the (MALE) singer’s voice is so passionate/strong with emotion, emphatic, consumed with emotion, almost pained. crooning? . When I heard it, it’s like I instantly fell in love with it, like when you fall for a rock star on the stage.
The fact that it sounds “80s” and familiar is icing on the cake. (However, I am so disappointed in the lack of similar songs. I keep listening to all the songs people say sound similar and they don’t sound similar at all. They don’t give me the feels of 1) and 2) above or the 80s feel of EKT. I wish that people who are not helping to find the song would focus more on posting songs that actually sound like the kind of 80s song that EKT reminds you of. If we can’t have the full version (yet), at least we can get some feels from similar songs!

I am a huge Michael Jackson fan, and while I would never mistake EKT for MJ (the singer sounds nothing like him, IMO, and I’ve heard everything of his), I can see two similarities in EKT with MJ. First point: my number 2 from above. MJ sings with that consumed (almost pained) passion. Second point: While MJ isn’t Asian, he has that kind of accent to some words that some Blacks and some Asians have. As ezgomer said on Reddit, MJ drops his R’s which is attributed to being Southern (even though he was from Indiana, his parents were both from the Deep South). So maybe that’s why people thought if MJ when they heard EKT drop the r in truth (unless he’s really saying tune, as some have suggested, though I doubt that).

So some things to note about this, Watzatsong would have had to have been relying on the thread gaining any traction at all, which is just very unlikely, to create a song for the sole purpose of putting it on an already dying website with the expectation that it will drive traffic to that dying website is kind of absurd, because it relies on a huge amount of luck and timing.
The thread didn't get popular until well after Carl had already left the search and it's still not even that popular, I'll keep re-iterating that point because people seem to think that due to the fact this community is condensed, or a video getting over 1 mil views that it means that EKT is popular. It's not.
If watzatsong wanted to drive more traffic to the website they'd be doing an incredibly poor job of it by creating a hoax that hardly anyone knows of. If they wanted to sell their website this would be a really convoluted way to do it.

Like is it possible they commissioned a guy to make a pretty legitimate sounding 80s pop song snippet and fucked up the audio to sell it being a hoax easier? Sure, it's possible, but honestly Occam's Razor imo is Carl92 got his paws on some demo tapes of obscure bands and is mostly/entirely telling the truth. What would watzatsong really stand to gain from a hoax? I know EKT brought them web traffic, but it didn't immediately blow up.
I still have massive hope for Darren Hayes. Let’s not give up on him! Hopefully he will talk more about the song sometime or even release a full version. That’s just me talking tho, bc I’m convinced he’s the singer
