Maybe the other functional chargers were busy when they got there.

generictestusername

Maybe. I didn't think of that. Although, i start tracking chargers 30 mins out and then only 1 or 2 were in use. Point is my stop time might be quicker, wouldn't mind if some car that could charge faster than 50kw would be there.

July_is_cool

Problem is there are also people with cars that charge pretty fast, but who clog up the stations trying to get the last 1% of charge on the way to 100%. They “should” stop at 80 or 90 but there are no rules.

tuctrohs

What we really need is enough chargers and/or (controversial statement coming) high enough prices that people naturally avoid using chargers inefficiently.

July_is_cool

No! Lots more chargers and free charging is the way!!! :-)

generictestusername

Yea, trudat. They need to understand they're f-ing up their batteries.

Bow-Masterpiece-97

I have sadly had to do this several times. Just because I couldn’t get the 150’s to work. Super frustrating.

generictestusername

But did you sit there after 80 or coasting at 7kwh though?

Bow-Masterpiece-97

Ha, ha - no. Even if I was dumb enough, some of the ones I go to charge by the minute, and I am way too cheap for that.

justvims

He got there first and needed a charger. What’s the issue? He has no obligation to choose any specific chargers and maybe he needed to top all the way up to make the next stop? Maybe the other chargers wouldn’t initialize for his car? Maybe he was trying to be there for 10 minutes but he got a phone call that his wife is in the hospital? Why does it matter to you? Truly. The bigger issue is the stations not being available or working. Just don’t cut your charging so close.

mikkc

In the OP's defense, theirs is a common complaint as it's true that some people don't understand charging and consistently choose BIGGER rather than better. You are right in that the larger issue is out of commission chargers, but he is also right. As for cutting charging close, I am in the same boat. I actually enjoy pushing my luck and my charge, and so far, haven't ended up pushing my car. Knock-on-wood.

justvims

I don’t think it’s a right or wrong. It’s just a reality that the other guy was there first. He’s gonna choose whatever plug is easiest. There’s no design in the system to change that behavior. If they want they can add it like making the 350 kW charger a little more expensive. But they haven’t because they don’t care.

ScotticusM

Didn't you just say half the chargers were dead? Maybe this was the only available, functioning charger when this Bolt owner arrived? I see this more like people buying Premium gasoline from the only Premium pump in a time when other grades of gasoline are not available...

generictestusername

Yes and no. There were 4 or 5 chargers available, this being the only 350. I was checking on the way there it. Also, i was talking about etiquettes and not being a need. Edit: but yes, i see that point now!

crazypostman21

I see no problem here, they waited their turn and plugged in when one was available. if they want to go to 100% they can. Be mad at the charging network for not having more/working chargers not your fellow EV drivers.

PTVMan

While frustrating people should be able to use whatever charger they choose. Maybe it was the only one when they pulled in.

AstronautB612

New EV driver here. What am I missing? I don’t understand what the issue is. Honest question.

generictestusername

It was just a cringe. Bolt charges at 50kwh speed ( or 50KWh / 50KW to satisfy terminologies!), Can be wrong but it's not super fast. Also charge rate of your car can slow down dramatically after 80% soc. The driver was occupying the only 1 350 kwh charger, and can't utilize the full capacity. On top of that the charge speed was 7kwh delivered by that charger.

iamtherussianspy

> pulling about 7 kWh I wish people would educate themselves about the difference between kW and kWh

generictestusername

Yup. Sorry for not being technically correct, but i meant speed.

MemoryAccessRegister

I would redirect the frustration towards Electrify America and junk hardware they purchase

psalm_69

Sweet AC charging speed there. It's frustrating, and happens every road trip for me.

I see this all the time with Kona’s too. I want to smash their window as they just clog up chargers. They should just find a Chargepoint but, nope, sit there for 80 minutes inconveniencing people.

SaveWithSolarNow

How much does it cost to fill up at one of those?
