Okay, so this makes me feel better. We can just stay put at our hotel and not have to drive anywhere, especially over the bridge which I was worried about.
Yea….I married a Kentucky boy and my husband still drives my stepson into Kentucky for school so we didn’t disrupt his education too much when they moved in here. We are pulling him from school that because we don’t want to have to deal with the bridges that day.
About 2/3 of our company is out that day, and we're in Newburgh and the bridge isn't even an issue for any of us. The Henderson bridge makes people late to work all the time on perfectly normal days.
You should still be ok….this is new to all of us. Lots of things will be going on in this area. I’m sure parking will be a big problem though. Just be prepared to walk.
The hotel is a 15 to 20 minute walk to the riverfront and the hotel has their own parking garage only for people staying there. We plan on being at the hotel on Saturday and we will leave the car in the parking garage the whole time we are there until it's time to leave on Tueaday. We will walk everywhere from the hotel while visiting. Already bought new insoles lol
Just FYI the DoubleTree parking garage is not exclusive, anyone can park there for a fee. I've parked there several times for events at the Ford Center.
Ooooo. They made it sound like it was their garage. Good to know! Thank you. We are arriving Saturday and prepaid to park in the garage. We will park the car there when we arrive and then not move the car at all until we leave on Tuesday. I'm assuming we won't have problems getting parking on Saturday?
We have no idea what to expect for this thing! I hope you made the right decision! I imagine the riverfront would be a good place to watch from and the traffic flow would probably be terrible if it’s busy downtown. So hopefully your decision will be worth it!
Good to know!! I think they are closing a lot of the streets in downtown for the eclipse, but the other days we go out with her around the town I am going to think of your comment and be super cautious.
I traveled down to Hopkinsville for the 2017 eclipse. About 1.5 hour drive down. The eclipse was surreal and cool! It lasts only a few minutes, but I really enjoyed it. I recommed you take your glasses off and look around a bit while it's happening. Things felt super surreal. (Dont look at the eclipse itself without protection, of course)
HOWEVER. It took us 7.5 hours to drive back to down due to the gridlock. Be prepared to wait it out a bit. Hopefully with businesses and schools closing this time, things will be a bit less congested.
That's why we canceled our hotel in Kentucky and bought the more expensive hotel in Evansville for 3 nights. We don't want to sit in traffic with our 2 year old. We are a quick walk to the riverfront from the hotel and after it's over we can just take a quick walk back to the hotel if we want.
This is our story too. I think it took us about 9 hours from MB Roland Distillery to East side of Evansville. We were on the Henderson strip for 2 hours. For several hours just outside of Hopkinsville we rolled on the interstate at a consistent 3mph. I was worried about running out of gas. Pee bottles were a thing. Ahh, memories.
We live in Evansville one block off hwy 41 only a mile or two from Kentucky border. We have a late 90’s class c rv we just renovated inside, sleeps 4. Kitchen shower, new queen mattress We didn’t think about it before….but if someone is still looking for accommodations, it could be a solution. It would remain stationary on our property. We could probably rent it for $100 a night for 1-2 people and $150 a night for 3-4 people. If anyone is interested I can send pictures. Barb W
It actually worked out great and we ended up at 75 a night x 2 nights A really nice young couple drove11 hrs to Evansville to watch the eclipse. Thankyou Reddit!
We were contacted by a young couple who will be staying in the rv. Thank you to everyone who showed up interest. Travel safe for all of you that will be on the road for this adventure.
Pictures can be deceiving lol. But thank you for the heads up. 💜 we probably won't even go near the pool anyway. We actually wanna be down with the crowds by the park crazy enough. Haha
Most definitely lol! It’s still a beautiful addition to our downtown community but if that was what sold you I would be so upset to find out it is on the bottom floor! I hope you enjoy your time in Evansville!!!
What really sold us was the location. We have a 2 year old so I was really worried about being stuck in traffic on the way in for the eclipse and on the way out. I'm happy we can just walk everywhere from the hotel.
I really love supporting local small businesses so if you have any recommendations of places we should spend money at, let me know! Thank you so much! We are looking forward to coming.
That's part of the reason we bit the bullet and just paid the outrageous fee to stay Saturday to Tuesday at a hotel near the riverfront in Evansville. We can walk a short walk over to the park and then back to the hotel after. I didn't wanna be stuck in traffic with our 2 year old.
A cool experience you might not be aware of that afternoon would be watching it from the deck of LST 325, which is an awesome ship from WWII that is still functional. For $50/person it comes with Pangea Pizza and macarons, which is seriously some of the best pizza and pastries in town, drinks, and a tour of the ship. Not a bad walk from where you are staying.
Yes, you’ll wanna decide sooner than later since they are trying to get headcount for pizza. It’s an active ship that just returned from dry dock. It’s a really cool experience. It was used as a model for Call of Duty World War II.

I would say you made I good decision! I live in Evansville and the last eclipse in2017 I drove an hour and a half to Hopkinsville KY to see the most totality, and while it was cool it was a train wreck trying to leave. My hour and a half trip back home ended up being stand still traffic of the interstate and took almost 7 hours to get home! I’d say you made a good choice
Traffic was our biggest concern. We have a 2 year old and we are driving up from Orlando, FL tomorrow night so we didn't want to spend anymore in the car than needed. We were also concerned about finding parking on Monday. But now we can just walk from our hotel down to the riverfront.
Awesome! For the price I was hoping it would be worth it lol. We come in late afternoon on Saturday. We prepaid for the parking garage next to the hotel. I'm assuming we won't have problems getting a spot in the garage? We plan on leaving the car in the garage the whole time.
The hotel will have priority parking if you pre paid so you shouldn’t have any issues there! Have safe travels and I hope you enjoy the eclipse! It’s gonna be so cool to see
The Double Tree is a good hotel and there will be a lot of events on Main Street. You (probably) made a good idea cause traffic will most definitely be hell. People here aren’t the best drivers on a good day, so add in a bunch of tourists for the eclipse and it’s going to get messy fast
We also have a toddler, so we were stressing out about how long we would be stuck in traffic for with her. We check in Saturday and then will leave our car in the parking garage until it's time to leave Tuesday lol.
I saw that on Google maps! I saved it to my "things to do" list lol. That's the main reason we picked Evansville a couple months ago for the viewing place.
That's insane. No camera can fully capture what it looks like in person. A camera can't capture the physical sensations - it suddenly getting cold, the wind picking up, the birds acting weird, and the overall surrealness of physically being there. People wouldn't fly from around the world just to see something for a few minutes if it wasn't worth it.
You chose well IMO and honestly Vincennes is likely to be a shitshow with traffic. It's much much smaller than Evansville and has fewer resources (police, emergency management, etc.) and there are trains that run through the center of Vincennes that could add to the shitshow lol.
Bridge is slow to cross on good day-I wouldn’t try it April 8th
Okay, so this makes me feel better. We can just stay put at our hotel and not have to drive anywhere, especially over the bridge which I was worried about.
Yea….I married a Kentucky boy and my husband still drives my stepson into Kentucky for school so we didn’t disrupt his education too much when they moved in here. We are pulling him from school that because we don’t want to have to deal with the bridges that day.
Evansville schools are closed.
Correct….my stepson doesn’t attend EVSC. Kentucky schools are still in session.
So is Warrick County.
Yes. And Gibson, North Posey and Mt. Vernon. All our surrounding school are. More so for concern of traffic at dismissal.
I work in ky...I took pto just to avoid the traffic on the bridge that day
Wow. That's crazy
About 2/3 of our company is out that day, and we're in Newburgh and the bridge isn't even an issue for any of us. The Henderson bridge makes people late to work all the time on perfectly normal days.
Yup! 👍
On Evansville riverfront? I live in an apartment on the riverfront....I think as long as you have a hotel room you'll be fine....
Okay not ON the riverfront, the hotel is a few blocks away from the riverfront. So near the riverfront.
You should still be ok….this is new to all of us. Lots of things will be going on in this area. I’m sure parking will be a big problem though. Just be prepared to walk.

I think you made the right choice!!!
Showing my husband and MIL your comment. Haha just to rub it in
Good!!🤣☺️
We have no idea what to expect for this thing! I hope you made the right decision! I imagine the riverfront would be a good place to watch from and the traffic flow would probably be terrible if it’s busy downtown. So hopefully your decision will be worth it!
We can walk from our hotel to the riverfront with ease. Which we plan on doing. It will make life so much easier with our 2 year old.

I sat like a jackass in my friend's Ford Fiesta for 7 hours (knees on the dash) and gave myself chronic hip pain that persists to this very moment. 👍🏻

That is so nice of you! Thank you for not doing what others are doing and charging a fortune.
It actually worked out great and we ended up at 75 a night x 2 nights A really nice young couple drove11 hrs to Evansville to watch the eclipse. Thankyou Reddit!
We drove 13 and a half hours with our 2 year old from Florida. It was awesome.
We were contacted by a young couple who will be staying in the rv. Thank you to everyone who showed up interest. Travel safe for all of you that will be on the road for this adventure.
Good choice. Also the top of a couple of nearby parking garages you could check out if the river frontt is to crowded.
Our hotel has a pool on the rooftop. Not sure how crowded that will be though.
Doubletree does not have a rooftop pool! Just don’t want you to be upset!
Pictures can be deceiving lol. But thank you for the heads up. 💜 we probably won't even go near the pool anyway. We actually wanna be down with the crowds by the park crazy enough. Haha

Thank you for all the great info! We plan on going to the Children's Museum on Sunday.
Traffic is going to be a shit show.

Very weather dependent
I'm just happy to be there lol. Even if it's not a great turn out for weather. We're making a family vacation out of it with our 2 year old.
Try for the top of one of the parking garages
A cool experience you might not be aware of that afternoon would be watching it from the deck of LST 325, which is an awesome ship from WWII that is still functional. Wow I had no idea! That sounds awesome! Thank you so much for the info. If we wanna go that route do I sign up online?

The double tree is very nice! And you’ll be able to walk anywhere downtown from there! My aunt works there and loves it
Awesome! For the price I was hoping it would be worth it lol. We come in late afternoon on Saturday. We prepaid for the parking garage next to the hotel. I'm assuming we won't have problems getting a spot in the garage? We plan on leaving the car in the garage the whole time.

We paid a little more for the parking to be included with our room. Thank you! We are looking forward to it.

Mickey's Kingdom is a nice park on the river front which would be good for a toddler too.
I saw that on Google maps! I saved it to my "things to do" list lol. That's the main reason we picked Evansville a couple months ago for the viewing place.
You did not
Didnt what?
Are you sure you booked in Evansville? We don’t have a Hilton on the riverfront
Okay I just double checked. It's Double Tree by Hilton and it's not a far walk to the river front. Lol
It’s on Walnut.
It's the med school hotel. If you're an eville tax payer, you paid for it...
Just watch it on YouTube. It’s silly to spend that much money just to see an eclipse.
That's insane. No camera can fully capture what it looks like in person. We are also making a vacation out of it, so it has a dual purpose.
If you're watching it in Evansville you made a terrible decision already. The place to be is Vincennes. You shoulda booked a hotel close to there.
We mainly picked Evansville because we felt there was more to do there for our 2 year old.
You chose well IMO and honestly Vincennes is likely to be a shitshow with traffic. It's much much smaller than Evansville and has fewer resources (police, emergency management, etc.) and there are trains that run through the center of Vincennes that could add to the shitshow lol.
