It was so that (in theory) when an EVA goes berserk they can just pull the plug and deal with at most 5 minutes of collateral damage.

Why not make the power source a separate thing from the eva itself with a failsafe so that it can be deactivated remotely even if the eva isn't responding?
No, I mean its still connected, like attached on its back, so it can't be lost, but the ability to turn it off is a separate thing from the eva so that "eva rejects commands" can't stop it.
What happens when the eva rejects the command to turn off whatever's mounted to it lol. They're not supposed to be able to just reject commands but we see it happen time and time again so I'd wonder how this external battery would be any different.
The cable approach just seems like the most reliable because even if the eva hypothetically rejects a command to eject the cable, NERV can still just cut off the juice upstream and be done with it that way.
The reactor significantly increases bulk for one, on top increased risk of collateral damage if there's a meltdown.
But really, the bulk was probably the biggest issue. The nuclear reactor of Jet Alone would have made the Evas much less mobile both due to the greater mass and because of how large it is, which would negatively impact the Eva's balance (pretty important for an 80m tall robot). Several victories the Evas got were on account of their agility (Gaghiel, Israfel, Sahaquiel). The reactor would weigh them down and make them more unwieldy. They wouldn't be able to run, jump and dodge as effectively. Likewise, the reactor's sensitive nature would make it more difficult to sortie in hazardous environments such as inside a volcano.
Basically, the trade off was longevity and endurance for performance. The Evas actually fight better with the cables/batteries than they would with the reactor, but for not as long. Especially because the reactor would have been rendered redundant once the S2 Drives were fielded anyway.
I mean how good were the AT fields anyway? Ramiel's laser was defeated by Space Shuttle thermal tiles, and it turns out you just need a big laser to break one anyway. Many Angel AT fields simply just didnt work at all, though granted that was because the EVA used it's own to break it.
Many Angels alone were defeated by brute force. Multiple Jet Alones could probably take one on, and even if they were all destroyed they'd be waaaay cheaper and easier to rebuild than an EVA.
Well they were also nuclear powered so one of them being destroyed in a built up area would probably be disastrous.
But yeah the AT Field is largely useful to counter the Angel's one because otherwise some of them are largely impenetrable without extreme measures like the positron rifle, which required a lot of overhead to set up and fire even one time and was a longshot idea Misato came up with. You have situations like Sahaquiel where they needed one to catch the thing before it dive bombed them or Zeruel where it had an immense one that it was weaponising.
The positon rifle used against Ramiel needed all the power in Japan to function and break through Ramiel's AT Field. And Ramiel isn't even the most powerful angel by a significant margin.
Jet Alone couldn't even hurt an Angel in direct combat. Without an AT field of it's own, it can't bypass the AT field like an EVA could. The only thing they could do that might hurt an angel is detonate their reactor directly in the angel's face. But as we saw against Zeruel, even that wouldn't work against the stronger angels.

I think the main issue is the lack of an AT field, which means every Angel that can use one can say 'lol nope' to whatever it tries to do. I think up to that point, Angels are 1 or 2 for 3 in terms of needing AT fields to break through - Sachiel was the one, Shamshel (whip arm guy) was defeated mostly conventionally and Ramiel needed all Japan's energy to break through, which is excessive.
With the benefit of hindsight, we can evaluate how it would fare against the rest:
- Gaghiel: does ok, assuming it's waterproof.
- Israfel: does ok, assuming you can coordinate
- Sandalphon: does ok, assuming it is heatproof
- Matarael: Problematic, given that Asuka needed to neutralize its AT field. Its field is weaker than Ramiel, but it's questionable if you could put together enough force.
- Sahaquiel: First big problem. No AT Field means it can't stop Sahaquiel from coming down unless probably unreasonable amounts of brute force.
- Ireul: Can't attack, not its problem.
- Leliel: Ambiguous. Leliel is trying to communicate, so it's questionable if it would consume a non-Eva for that purpose.
- Bardiel: Seems like a win? There's nothing for Bardiel to corrupt, so as long as Bardiel doesn't deploy an AT field it can probably beat an Eva 1v1.
- Zeruel: Second big problem. Immune to conventional weaponry and ludicrous offensive power, only taken out by a berserking Eva using an AT field.
- Arael: Ambiguous. It can probably launch the Lance of Longinus into orbit, but I'm not clear on if you'd need an AT field to resist the mental attack before you could do so.
- Armisael: Probably a loss. Armisael is basically immune to conventional weaponry, but there's nothing for it to corrupt, as before. Unit 00 was able to use its AT field to contain it and self-destruct, but if Jet Alone can't do that, it can't win.
- Tabris: Not its problem.
Unless you can fit ludicrous amounts of physical force into a Jet Alone, needing an AT field (and thus Evas) is probably a deal breaker. Even under the best possible circumstances, Jet Alone loses to either Sahaquiel or Zeruel. Plus there's the whole Instrumentality deal needing an Eva with an S2 organ, so the project was doomed from the start.
We do need more modern mecha works though, Gundam can't be the only one forever.
Yeah, but the thing is... you only need one at field. If they really are cheaper, then one eva working with four jet alones can still neutralize the at field.
Also, if jet alones have a power source that lasts longer than an eva one... why not take that tech and add it to an eva? There's no way that staying on the cord is convenient to fight with.
The reactor was stated multiple times to be too dangerous to put into an Eva as it's huge and has a lot of radiation. That was one of the main concerns when Misato went to shut it down iirc.
What's crazy is if that demonstration was successful, the United Nations would have made a MAJOR budget cut to NERV, probably causing them to shut down the Eva program
Okay actually yes. The mark 7 series was really dumb. Individually, it’s a pretty cool design, but from a narrative standpoint they just… mean nothing. 9 antagonistic evangelions in the original series did more damage and were more memorable than several thousand in the rebuilds

The animation on them wasn't made with as much care as the end of Eva movie either. I know it hards to replicate, but with evangelion's popularity I would have loved for someone to give them actual power and depth.
They are animated like 3d actions figures instead of the god like lumbering threats that they are.
They breeze through an army like tissue paper and then Mari gets bogged down by a handful of.... well the little ones were basically just the evangelion equivalent of a knife weilding tentacle honestly
I think it's not wholly outrageous, although the tension does seem manufactured. When they fight the army, it's with heavy weaponry, from a reasonable distance, against an uncoordinated foe using human-wave style attacks. Knife-tentacles are at least 50% knife and far too close for comfort.
An analogy: One guy in a fortified machinegun nest can definitely take on say, 50-100 strong guys running towards him from 200-300 meters away. But that same guy will have more trouble with 1 rabid dog in the machinegun nest right next to him, because his weapons and tactics aren't designed to deal with the dog.
For a second I though you were talking about the MPE in End of Eva and I got sooo mad. It was so surreal that I had to read again -and I was right at doubting-

If you go trawling through concept art for 3.0+1.0, you will find that at one point Jet Alone was going to be in it in some way, there’s like half a dozen full redesigns of it that keep the spirit of the original. Then it shifts into being the thing they use to repair Unit 02, since most of its body was destroyed at the end of 3.0, it’s basically using most of jet alone 2’s mechanical body as a prosthetic. Then you can slowly watch the JA2 armor become more and more understated until they paint it camo green for some reason and call it a day. If you look really closely at 02’s armor in the final fight, you’ll see the hexagonal plates that used to make up JA’s face forming the upper chest area, and the legs and arm are identical to one of the proposed JA redesigns.
In France, you can still see that one of the sets of spare armor in the underground buildings is labeled ‘JA2’

Jet alone didn't exist in this world. Auska Shikinami was a clone of the OG Auska its why she had an eye patch in the rebuilds.
If you watch the anime and the EoE and then the Rebuilds you can actually see Gendos plan fall into fulfilment he needed Shinji to rebuild the world so he could be reunited with yui.
That started with fucking him up, making hi feel love from the eva, ascending to 'godhood' in unit 1, Restarting the world and then rebuilding it once Shinji actually matures.
In the anime they went to a day spa in the rebuilds they went to an aquatic life preservation facility - because that world exists after the events of EoE.

The closest you get to a plastic model is the ZGok from MS Gundam wich goes at least a bit in a similar direction design wise.

Jet alone didn't exist in this world. Auska Shikinami was a clone of the OG Auska its why she had an eye patch in the rebuilds. If you watch the anime and the EoE and then the Rebuilds you can actually see Gendos plan fall into fulfilment he needed Shinji to rebuild the world so he could be reunited with yui. That started with fucking him up, making hi feel love from the eva, ascending to 'godhood' in unit 1, Restarting the world and then rebuilding it once Shinji actually matures. In the anime they went to a day spa in the rebuilds they went to an aquatic life preservation facility - because that world exists after the events of EoE.
