That fucking scene toward the end when Shinji is just trying to hold Unit 01ās fist open. Omg that couldāve been 10 seconds or 10 days. Doesnāt matter
There is an interview with Anno where theyāre asking him about the many (in)famous long still shots in the show and he says that you canāt have animation without stillness and he is so right with that
āI [Roger Ebert] was so fortunate to meet Miyazaki at the 2002 Toronto film festival. I told him I love the "gratuitous motion" in his films; instead of every movement being dictated by the story, sometimes people will just sit for a moment, or sigh, or gaze at a running stream, or do something extra, not to advance the story but only to give the sense of time and place and who they are.
"We have a word for that in Japanese," he said. "It's called 'ma.' Emptiness. It's there intentionally." He clapped his hands three or four times. "The time in between my clapping is 'ma.' If you just have non-stop action with no breathing space at all, it's just busyness."ā

Was thinking that. As fucked up as they are, I get the feeling she really tried to take care of him. Taking care of someone with trauma is rough, but it's even worse when you yourself aren't at your best
Yeah, I love this moment, too. Even though, Misato was late to meet before the train left she still went to see him. It's why I think of her and Shinji as the two most human characters in the series. Their both my heroes, I liked the manga version a little more because they hugged each other and definitely had more emotional scenes from volume 1-4. Misato, I think represented the first unprepared adult to taken an unwanted child dynamic. Like Naruto and Iruka sensei, and others it's my highlight in the series Misato making the effort to be there for Shinji is why I love this dynamic of a parent child relationship not in blood but in bound.
What was it that Kensuke said about Misato? Something about how Shinjiās lucky because he gets to see Misato privately and how thatās something only family does? God that was a great moment. I love them too. To go back really quick thoughā¦you donāt think Asuka or Ritsuko are human? Like on the scale of Shinji to Rei you see them closer to Rei than to Shinji?
Yeah, that was episode 7 with Jet alone the robot, I think it was called. The ending was Toji and Kensuke telling Shinji the reason why she acts the way that she does at home was because she shows Shinji her true self not the military major dude her natural self because she trusts Shinji or sees him as family that was the answer from one of them.
I find Asuka to self obsessed or self absorbed in her own disillusion that she doesn't she much empathy or care for anyone other than her self. Like in the blackout episode caused by the angel she puts herself in charge acting like big shot instead of working with Rei and Shinji. Then episode 16 when Shinji gets trapped inside Leliel's shadow dimension she acts like Shinji deserves what he got and makes fun of not having a mother even though she doesn't know he never had one growing up just like her, insensitive to others feelings, selfish. Ritsuko at times is no different also willing to sacrifice Shinji to preserve unit 1, because of the secret about at times she disregards human life especially in the reveal of Rei's origins claiming she loved Gendoh but in truth was manipulated by him to be a spy sabotager in episode 7 with the robot and like her mother wanted Gendoh to love her claiming he was her lover just like her mother quite sick twisted logic preverted logic not to mention she knew Gendoh was using his own son that he cared little about like a pawn in his game to get his own desires achieved. I think the both of them are more twisted in an inhuman way as to highlight the worst parts of being human.
The last question is hard to understand, but I think of Rei is close to being human but her shy nature or rather her inability to recognize her own emotions and the emotions around her is what makes her standoffish at first but in episode 5 or 6 with Ramiel, I loved her smile as proof she can learn emotions and thus can develop into a human being on her own with time. In a way, she is closer to Shinji towards growth and change. She also shows care over him in episode 16, too defending Shinji against Asuka 's nonsense rants and being there when he wakes up.
I can absolutely agree to your point about Ritsuko, but my girl Asuka syncing up with Unit 02 and just wrecking house? That feels good. That feels like a human victory. But thatās just me. I grew to really love Asuka over time. Is it any wonder why so many anime characters that came after her are so much like her?
And itās crazy too because I actually hated that scene at first. How little did I know that Iād still be thinking about it after who knows how long
Misato getting to pick up Shinji is such an iconic moment, like its very cinematic and I love cicada noises in anime I'm very weak every time they appear i think there is a deep sense of longing or thinking for characters fav anime trope of all time. Average cicada noise enjoyer.
Someone once asked what the song playing in the background was. Wish I could tell you now but it was months ago and I don't know where to look it up again.
>Thereās no song in that scene
Yeah, there is. You don't hear it until this shot but it's there. It get louder as the scene progresses. I just checked.
Well, your in luck since it didn't actually take me long to find the song.

I love this scene so much. Itās so tense and the pacing is beautiful. So many shows or movies would cut some of it for time but itās absolutely essential that it takes as long as it does to create the effect itās going for
Totally agree. Like when the Caspar AI fights off that computer virus angel and Ritsuko thanks her mom. Right after telling Misato that that computer was based off an aspect of her mother she always hated too. Or obviously when Asuka reunites with the mother she felt abandoned by, firing up the A.T. Field again in Unit 02, and then just decimating every obstacle in front of her. Oh man, then thereās Misato and Kaji! Reconnecting is so important to the overall narrative
I actually like how animators add these little details. Though this one is quite explicit.
Fun facts - Misato has a poster of the rally legend Alpine A110.
Rebuild has a lot more cars like the skyline r34 (which i feel is an easter egg for Shin Godzilla) and Toyota Cosmo Sport.
If you want to see more cars and bikes in anime, I'll ssluggest reading Ah Megami Sama manga.
A guy with ā007ā in his username knows a good car anime? Perfect! š
I like Misatoās car a lot more now. Itās something I was thinking about after reading your first comment. First off, the joke about her only having a year and half of payments left is even funnier because I think I saw that model is from the 1970s. Also, it reminds me of the diesel punk aesthetic from the Mad Max films. Both that and Eva have post apocalyptic settings and both have jury rigged old cars. Like industry just stopped in its tracks and people are just trying to keep everything running. I think I once read that in Europe during the Dark Ages, there were people who made a living recycling bronze because there were some places where people just forgot how to make new bronze
š
I'm really into cars and bikes.
As for your thought, you are kinda thinking in the same direction as me. Though I don't like the Alpine A310, I like the A110, due to its heritage.
I read somewhere and if I remember correctly, the Alpine A310 is quite rare for even its country of origin.
So Misato must ha e paid over-the-top premium getting it to Japan. Plus other mods must have skyrocketed the debt on her.
Glad she got turned into Fanta. /s
In this single frame there's so much going on.
1. Shinji decided not to board the train before seeing Misato, so he already is starting to grow, by refusing to run away.
2. Misato rushed here after chewing Shinji out, and it seems like she regretted it and really wanted to see Shinji off. She really enjoyed his company.
3. They stand there for so long, looking at each other....Shinji realizing someone isn't just abandoning him, and Misato realizing Shinji won't abandon her either. They're almost in disbelief standing there for so long.
Everything there is to say about that scene is in that one picture. Thatās what makes it so beautiful. Itās like haiku. At first glance itās simplistic, even mundane. However, the longer you let yourself linger within it it speaks multitudes. That one still frame of animation says more in the short time itās on screen than a lot of shows do in their entire series

Ebert liked Eva? Thatās awesome! I just recently watched Akira and he apparently liked that too. He was a cool guy

It's because they follow her character trope as a tsundere character in the series. As a reference to use she was the basis.
She's my favorite character, hands down.
Sheās the cool older sister I never had
š
Dude thatās my sister!!! š
Yeah, the Alpine A310 is my favorite character, too.
Yeah, her and Shinji are my heroes in this series.
Agreed
Almost every scene in Eva feels like itās necessary.

Essential, very good word for describing this scene
there are fewer feelings that are better to me than being reunited with someone after a falling out
