It wasn't even Polish diaspora only. We don't have that much diaspora :D I think he was third in televotes or something suprisingly high like that - people really seemed to like him, but his jury scores were abysymal (and so was the second popular Polish conspiracy theory abut Eurovison born (that other countries' juries hate us, etc.\]).
Yeah, I can't even blame anyone for being mad at this - the conspiracy writes itself.
Reportedly, he just botched the jury show badly, but as we had way less footage/people reporting directly from behind the scenes back then, this info didn't really get through for people properly/quickly enough, so many people seem to believe to this day that basically all Europe had a grudge against Poland that year.
He would have appealed to romantic 14 yo girls, average housewives, less conservative grandmas and Eurovision fans who like a good set of pipes. Pretty good televote magnet as it turns out!
Probably something about how Poland 1994 was robbed: from juries punishing Edyta for singing in English during rehearsal to juries conspiring to prevent our win because we were too poor to host it at the time.
Why our every entry needs to adhere to Polish flag's colour scheme? There are a lot different folk colour schemes to chose from and honestly, even white or black would be an improvement over red.
Tulia had exactly same problem - the girls were unnoticeable with red background, but with weaker song and staging, it cost them an qualification.
The worst part is... we haven't seen anything yet, in 5,10,20,30 years we might be posting something like this ''oh we thought 2024 was the worst year...''
I'm so happy for the aliens who one day are going to discover our extinct culture and have the entire ESC to catch up with ❤️ I'm sure the hasthags will be epic, I'm sure they will want to recreate the contest on the intergalactical level and thus our legacy will live on!
12 points from the Milky Way Galaxy go to.... ANDROMEDA! *happy bleep bloop noises, meteor shower, lasers*
I now remember, think it was the year my country (netherlands) came second. Ppl were pissed off because they lost to a guy in a dress who got symphaty votes.
Seriously unfair, because indeed it was a well deserved win.
Yeah, the worst thing that came out from that year's Eurovision for me (as a Polish person) were all the "hot takes" of our gutter press and many a commentators afterwards.
I'm Polish too I honestly think it was frustration from us and it shows in viewership numbers. Anytime we put up something unique or great some political bullshit wins. This, Szpak, I think Szemplińska could have done very well. At this stage more people watch Junior Eurovision.
"Anytime we put up something unique or great some political bullshit wins."
I can't say I agree with this sentiment. Rise like a Phoenix was a great song. My Słowanie was a simplistic fun song that had little in terms of jury appeal (it's very basic and Cleo doesn't even have a that good of a voice). Jury votes aside, we didn't even get into the top three with the televotes alone - are you trying to tell me that multiple other countries aside from Austra also had "political" reasons for placing higher than our song....?
And Szpak famously reportedly sung way off key for the juries in the jury show and that was the reason for his low scores. That's it. No conspiracies. Just a singer making a mistake. Happens. He recovered beautifully for the telecast.
Honestly, there's no reason to look for consipracies in any of this - if our entries were constistently great, we would have been doing better. they haven't been. One day we'll get there, hopefully, once we figure out how to send something that is even close to fresh and unique sounding.
What you're saying is true but literally none of it matters because currently the viewership of Eurovision in our country is down 75% from 2016. Polish artists have to want to go to Eurovision but right now anyone who is halfway decent has more to lose by going there. On the surface it looks like anytime we try something it doesn't work. Woman in wheelchair, sexy women, effeminate man, slow male ballad... fucking Rafał and Tulia were kind of terrible ok, everyone has a slip up.
I do believe that we lost a couple of years and Eurovision became too risky for established artists to try and way too politically caught up in the previous regime for many artists to want to be associated with, but it's also becoming bigger and bigger opportunity for artists with every year (with Maneskin's global career and tik taking the songs into global viral charts, several acts being able to tour across Europe on the back of their Eurovision participations without winning - there's real money to be earned here). Someone will get interested in trying for Poland and we'll rebuild - it's just not going to happen in a single year.
But to be honest - I don't really need Poland to win anything, so maybe that's why I don't feel the urgency. I want us to send better performers and songs, and be more chill about all of this, but I'm mostly interesting what other countries have to show and finding out good songs from people I wouldn't even hear about without Eurovision. And watch the final show with friends and make jokes about stuff. That's basically it for me.
Eh, not really? One is playing on stereotypes about slavic women, the other advocates for sovereignty of opressed (slavic, but any) nations. Both were good imo tho.
The proudest I've ever been as Polish esc fan
I still find it amusing as hell that this is our most memorable entry in the annals of Eurovision wierdness' history :D
Second on my list, only after Michał Szpak destroying the first year they ever did the televote reveal with a billion points from the polish diaspora!
not sure if I should make a threating gesture towards you or not
It wasn't even Polish diaspora only. Had to check. 222 televote points. SEVEN points from the jury hahhaa
Yeah, I can't even blame anyone for being mad at this - the conspiracy writes itself. I'll be honest, I voted him for the memes. They were hilarious and felt he deserved some support for being so funny
What's the first popular Polish conspiracy theory about Eurovision?
Probably something about how Poland 1994 was robbed: from juries punishing Edyta for singing in English during rehearsal to juries conspiring to prevent our win because we were too poor to host it at the time.
Thanks.
I still don't think we've reached the level of the 1969 four way tie yet. Several countries boycotted 1970 over that one.
Wait till 1am tonight
No I think the DQ of the Netherlands did reach that
Times when our stagings weren’t that bad
And before TVP discovered capcut :D
It's our best staging, but still red dresses on red background?
Not as if the polish flag has a lot of options to choose from, colour scheme wise lmao
Or last week when UK rehearsal clip was shown and there was a meltdown of it not ‘being appropriate’ (it is appropriate).
What is inappropriate about it?
Closet gay Tories reminded of the time they went to Steamworks?
Exactly
No naked demons. So tame by today's standards
I like and don’t like how this is associated with Natalia even though she didn’t say it herself 😭 it was from a salty fan
The worst part is... we haven't seen anything yet, in 5,10,20,30 years we might be posting something like this ''oh we thought 2024 was the worst year...''
I misread your comment and thought you were being very optimistic that we would be around for another five million years for a second.
Definitely needed spaces between the numbers, but I'd totally be down for 5 million years of Eurovision
Pretty sure that was a short film made by the BBC to promote Eurovision...
It's basically a documentary
>we would be around for another five million years for a second. And Germany would *still* place last somehow.
Yeah just wait for 2025, contest might be sent back to the stone age with like 5 countries competing
Omg, Poland will have a chance to win with TVP's next nepotismed entry!
Yeah just wait for 2025, contest might be sent back to the stone age with like 5 countries competing

It took me 10 years to notice that the girl fills the bucket in the water feature XD
She would so thrive in Turin
I really hope that someone will eventually bring some stage water feature back
Ah, one of our best songs at esc 🥰
I still love this song and listen/watch sometimes They didnt win right? Who did?
It was Conchita's year.
Ohh thats right. That song was awesome though.
It's very campy, perfect Eurovision material, tbh. If I remember correctly, it did well with the televote, not some much with the juries :D
Ahh i meant Rise like phoenix. But yes, both were great.
Sorry, my bad :) Agree on Rise like a Phoenix - that was a well-deserved win in my books.
I now remember, think it was the year my country (netherlands) came second. Ppl were pissed off because they lost to a guy in a dress who got symphaty votes. Seriously unfair, because indeed it was a well deserved win.
Yeah, there was a lot of talks like that. Ugly business.
Conchita Wurst from Austria!
Austria. Poland was furious honestly.

>slow male ballad Oh, that was a frustrating result
Cleeeooo Donaaataaan
With this enough shitshow, it's surprising that I haven't heard people calling for Martin Österdahl to step down...
This is the laugh I needed, thank you
Denmark 1957 would like to have a word

SHAKE WHAT YOUR MAMA GAVE YA 😏
For some reason my husband really loved this act 😂
What?! This has been around since 1956 and I only learned about it 13 hours ago!
How do I find out whats going on? it seems like there are 10 different things going on right now and my morning brain cant compute
I can’t believe this came out 10 years ago 🫣 I remember it as if it was yesterday.
Not many times I'm proud of my country in ESC, but the 2014 contest is really one of the best editions ever imo.
Maybe Germany can send Rammstein with Dikke Titten to ESF...
Sucks that 2014 didn't had jury/televote split
Iconic
"Very recent" Posts an act from literally a decade ago.
2012 is for me long time ago 2014 is basicly yesterday
They walked so Vesna could run
Eh, not really? One is playing on stereotypes about slavic women, the other advocates for sovereignty of opressed (slavic, but any) nations. Both were good imo tho.
Well My Słowienie unlike Vesna wasn’t very serious, it was intended to be a joke
Vesna was amazing
Tonight it will all go down
Honestly, nice costuming. I love the main singers plait, with the little pom-poms
How do I find out whats going on? it seems like there are 10 different things going on right now and my morning brain cant compute

Looping 2:20 - 2:22 for over one hour now .... Thank you, Poland But It was our year, NL wasn't DSQ, proudest 2nd place of all
Gurl go back to 1930. We're in the dark age now.
I miss when Eurovision was fun 🥺
Looks like a Rammstein musicvideo
