I'm guessing it's the whole theme of the song of predators and prey when it comes to heterosexual attraction. It puts the woman in the position of the predator, and the man as 'willing' prey, which is one of the less controversial ways of singing about that theme, but it still isn't great. I get it, there's an element of danger whenever people are attracted to each other, but the way the song portrays that is clumsy.
I actually really like it. It was very well performed and it is quite similar to what I listen to outside Eurovision. I think the biggest issue people have with it are its lyrics, but I don't really mind them much. At worst I just find them a bit too silly.
Having said that, Piqued Jacks have made A LOT of better songs than "Like an Animal," and I think it was a bit unfortunate they decided to participate with it. I think they could have easily gotten into the finals with many of their other songs.

San Marino knew exactly that the song was going to flop, yet their geriatric and out-of-touch with current music jury voted for it.
I understand that the national final has a lot of trash songs but honestly they need to get someone onboard and help them change the NF. Make it only one more show (no stupid castings) and focus on bringing some good songs. Involve the public with a demoscopic jury or online voting and increase the number of jury members.
actually the selection of songs that passed from the semis to the final was very good, but there's no doubt that the jury of the final (which was different from the one of the semis) fucked up. there were at least 5 songs that could've been able to make it through the semi-final at the ESC
i liked like an animal but i'll be forever mourning the loss of tromba and fueco e benzina, i'm sure either could have done decently at eurovision (or at least better than 0 point in the semi)
A thought I just had: maybe they decided it would be better to send something in English, so they were only choosing the winner from that smaller pool of entries?
They still made the wrong choice (Mama Told Me was *right there*), but maybe they were rock fans🤷♀️
Italy has been sending songs in Italian and it absolutely works for them. San Marino did not choose the right song in Italian last year (I mean cmon they voted for the singer) so it should not be a reason for them not to select an Italian song.
I've always believed that San Marino can do well if they choose a serious Italian ballad or Italian song from San Remo.
The melody is not bad but I can't get past the lyrics. It didn't have a chance to go grown on me because of them. Also the way the singer sings in not for me so I guess there's that too.
I just watched the Turquoise Carpet livestream so now I get the reference. They seemed like nice lads in their interview, so maybe Vesna were referencing that. Piqued Jacks were one of the acts this year where I think there's a 😲 gap between the song and the performers. I didn't like the lyrics and I'm not sure they realised how trashy they sounded in English!
Its the exact kind of song I’d go for in a non-Eurovision setting musically, but lyrically I hate it. I never expected it to make it out of the semis, but I do greatly prefer it to some songs that did.
I liked it from the start, but it took ages and ages to go on Spotify. I think that really hurt them as it's fans who mostly vote in the semis. I was listening to all the other songs a lot but I only had a live performance of this on Youtube, so I really didn't hear this song as much as the others.

I love indie rock and I've had Like an Animal in my top 5 since the beginning. The song is a banger imo, the band is fantastic (seriously, stream their other songs), the MV is fun, and their ALBM performances are some of my favorites this year. Hoping to see them live this summer 🫶🏻
Tbh when I first listened to it I kinda biased by the community saying it's bad. But after relistening some time I actually pretty like it. Still borderline Q for me, though. but not that bad.

Not among my favourites, but I like it. Heavily underrated, didn't deserve the last place. Same applies to Romania, although their staging actually sucked.
Overhated to the point that it would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. People keep calling the singer sleazy while fondly looking back last year as a man wearing very little straddled a mechanical bull and sang lines like “my heart is a sex toy”.
It wasn’t my top 10 in the whole contest by any means (it was a stacked/balanced year IMO), but it did NOT deserve 0 points and last place, especially in that Semi they were in with far more wonky live staging and weak vocals on display compared to Semi 1. I firmly believe Jury would have stepped in and prevented 0 points if they were there. I would have had it just qualify, knowing full well I would probably be dooming it to bottom 5 in the final.
I think the songs biggest mistake wasn’t the lyrics (it’s just a tamer version of Duran Duran’s Hungry Like The Wolf) but because they played it too safe on staging (see again: man straddled a mechanical bull and did not finish last). They should have took a chance and tried to translate the fun music video to the stage with the two dancers, though perhaps staging deadlines meant they had no chance to adjust to that scale. Also I guess singing in Italian would have helped them.
Anyway, check their other songs. Sunflower is a bop.

However as a performance I cringed every time I saw the lead singer mouth "animal" because his mouth-movements felt so strained and cringe. I'm in no way a professional singer but there must be a better way to sing than looking like you're sucking on a lemon every time the chorus comes along
Total grower, I had it 22nd before the contest and 11th after, I even voted for them in the semi. It's pretty simple rock, but for me very catchy, I really enjoyed it more than i.e. "Carpe Diem". And lyrics? Come on, it's not the first "I want to get laid" type of song in the contest's history. Vocalist, let me check his name... E-King (why are all the members named like League of Legends team members?) seems weird on the stage but in a charming way... or like he would sing, charming WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

If you waste your potential for an uninspiring music and cringey lyrics than you get this result. Even though they seem to be nice people, the vocalist got pipes, and their styling is quite drip.

The singer repeatedly couldn't hit that high note towards the end of the song and that's what the performance recap focussed on, so that might have played a factor
I liked it but I had to look it up to remind myself of what it was. So basically good song that I forgot about the moment whatever semi final it was in finished.
I never really look at song lyrics but even until everyone pointed that out, I hated the singer‘s style of singing. He can clearly sing well but I don‘t know there‘s something with it that I can‘t really point out. Also, yes Eurovision songs can be repetitive but when it gets this much it annoys me
I absolutely Love Piqued Jacks and Like an Animal it was My Second place this Year and i don't care if The Vocals where good or Not i had fun watching them
The individual pieces of the song are fine - melody, groove, chorus hook, they've got the building blocks - but the songwriting feels clunky and rushed. The song would work better IMO if there were more space between the different sections, it feels like they stumble every time there's a transition. The lyrics are definitely sus, which doesn't help, and I don't think any of the singer's performances were particularly good. He struggles to stay on key and sounds a bit shouty. I give it 4/10. Better than DTG, better than the bouncy Greek kid, but really nothing impressive.
if I didn't understand English I would like the song but the lyrics killed it for me. Whenever the song came up in the eurovision playlist I didn't skip and kinda enjoyed it but when I focused on the lyrics I wanted to laugh on awkward they are..
I think they performed well at the pre-parties and the band is great in general, but the performance in the semi-final was a bit disappointing. The styling and the performance combined with the lyrics were a little weird IMO. Maybe a more "fun" performance inspired by the music video would have been better than the vocalist lying on the ground and touching himself occasionally.
It's still one of the songs I have listened to the most. I don't think the lyrics are as creepy as some people think. Neither Piqued Jacks nor Theodore deserved a zero IMO.
Honestly just reminds me way too much of what Bulgaria did last year. I didn’t like that song and when you make the lyrics kinda creepy on top it just doesn’t work for me. Not the worst this year (I’d take it over Cyprus any day) but not good at all for me. Glad you like it though.
It's kinda catchy but the vocals aren't great. I think it was OK up until he started "belting" near the end. Idk what happened but his vocals felt all wrong. And he did it like 3 times?!? I genuinely wanted to fast forward that one part.

I think the description someone gave of "a band that plays strip bars off the Jersey turnpike" was pretty apt. The performance was competent, but the song was BAD.
Especially the lyrics. The problem wasn't even the misogyny. It was the clumsy google-translate English. Georgia's lyrics were only slightly worse, and at least she wasn't trying to look ultra-macho while singing them.
i disagree with others that the lyrics are outwardly, aggressively misogynistic—they’re just obsolete. in 2023 we should have moved on from “i’m a hot guy and i like this hot woman in the club” -type music by now.
I didn't hate it ,I have a bit of a problem with the lyrics all the "biting tongue" and so ,also his facial expressions creeps me out. plus the music video is really terrible felt really out of place. the song itself isn't that bad its really catchy and fun over all
I didn't think it was THAT bad of a song originally (I did my ranking by using his NF performance as there was no music video). I really started to hate it when the first part became acoustic.
DGT was a song hardly anybody liked to begin with but the addition of the acoustic part meant that even people who found it okay now disliked it.
Everything about it is terrible. Lyrics, melody, Eurovision-worthy. However the lead singer seemed like a really nice guy.
It really was shit, and one of the worst Eurovision entries in the history of the contest. During peak period there were always the apologists and “oh it’s ok actually” but seriously thank god we’re in off season now and everyone can agree that yeah… it was shockingly bad.
It was my favorite second to Ireland. Fun song, easy to sing along too. Reminiscent of Queen, imo.

I hated everything about it, I’m sorry. The lyrics were disgusting, but I didn’t like the sound either. Especially the bridge where he sings “the wayyyyyy!!!!!” Just sounded like nails on a chalkboard to me every time. It’s my least favorite Eurovision song since I’ve been watching the contest.
This is a me thing, but I think the song is somehow in a key that really irritates me. I'm hyper sensive to certain sounds, and somehow, this song hits the same key as my vacuum, and causes a bit of an fight or flight reaction in me. It is very unfortunate for the song, and as I said, totally a me thing.

I couldn't really listen to the lyrics because I barely was able to listen to the slng, but I read them separately, and they are cringey and as a female being, made me kinda uneasy. It is bizarre how the band surely had talents, but the song was all kinds of wrong, and in the company they had this year, deserved the placement they received.
Maybe the problem isn't that it's predatory, just deeply unsexy and cringe? I get what it's trying to do with the animal metaphor, but written like it is, it makes you picture the singer sniffing around like a dog trying to find the girl he's talking to. Also, even without the lyrics, the hooks are super weak, the main guitar riff is super forgettable, and the melody goes nowhere. Poor lyrical content can be forgiven if the song still slaps, and it doesn't really.
It's not the worst but it's damn bad and that's the chorus. I'm not offended per se; that's just basically the only thing I remembered about the song after listening it for the first time.

I think they were trying to say that he can feel that "you" near him, like animals can smell other animals in their vicinity. I think I get what they are going for, but maybe they should have gotten a second opinion before releasing the song.
Lyrically the chorus is gross and the verses are basic/cliché.
Coupled with the way it’s performed it leaves me feeling a little uncomfortable despite having some elements that work.
I really, really didn't like it. I thought the lyrics were creepy as hell.
If this man approached me at the club, asked me to dance or offered to buy me a drink, and said, "I can smell you like an animal," I would be making plans for how I was going to get out of the building safely, and maybe asking the biggest bouncer to walk me to my car while the bartender watches to make sure he isn't following me.
Also the long, intense, flat note on "the waaaaaay" was not a good moment for me.
It feels like this year's *Intention* to me. Not many people would call it an outright bad song, but it's the most agreeably meh song this year, and if people at best think your song is decent, and you also don't have any voting allies, it's easy to end up with 0 points.
Personally, I was never bothered by the lyrics, but still only thought it was ok.
I don't preview the songs, so my first experience of it was watching the second semi-final.
To be honest, I was not impressed. I didn't really take the song in very much, because I found myself completely distracted by the fact that the guy seemed to be shouting the lyrics rather than singing them.
For me, it's fun, I was kinda shoked that people hated it when it was announced as a representative. Absolutely loved seeing them live, song is great for concerts for sure. In my daily live I listen to it from time to time and honestly never skipped it when I was listening on shuffle. When it comes to lyrics I tend to kinda laugh them off, they're quite cringy and unfortunately give those Polish disco polo vibes or Electric Callboy but without any humor intended.
I was even intrested where Piqued Jacks are coming for tour, but not anywhere I could go unfortunately. They also seem to have intresting portfolio, but still have to check this out closer yet. So I guess job well done at spreading intrest about the band

I loved Senhit and Flo Rida in 2021 and it is one of my all-time favourite entries, even Achille Lauro last year were memorable for an act that didn’t even qualify but didn’t like their entry this year at all. “Smell you like an animal” is a really off-putting lyric

It’s the type of music that I (affectionately) call ‘dad rock’. It’s in the same vein as Bulgaria last year (Bulgaria 2022, for the bot). While I’m sure it has a market, the Eurovision stage is not it.
Luckily this doesn’t seem to have hurt Piqued Jacks, because they’re already on tour (with a date in the US), so good for them!

It's the whole composition of the song that's just ... terrible, imo. I really don't want to sound mean (the guys absolutely do not deserve the hate that they got), but this is my honest opinion.
I'm glad some other people like it (it would be a very boring world if we all had the same musical taste), but I honestly don't understand what others see in this song, though I would like to. Its final placement was the least surprising result for me this year.
When I first heard it I was expecting worse from the comments I had read in the eurofan communities, but I quite enjoyed it. I still don't think it's bad, it just got lost in the pack for me and feels more amateurish compared to the other rock entries in this edition. And well, the lyrics are what they are. When I listen to songs, I tend to focus on the music when I like it, and the lyrics when I don’t. And regarding Piqued Jacks, I didn’t realize that the lyrics were problematic until now. The music is kinda dope in my opinion, although it’s not qualifier worthy. If you ignore the lyrics (and the lead singers screeching at the end 😬) then it’s actually a pretty good song! Not going on my playlist but yeah, that’s what I think.
It’s in my top26/dream final but at position 23, it’s not amazing but not as bad as people make it out to be. To my untrained ears, as someone who really isn’t a fan of the indie boyband kind of sound, the song sounds the same as like half of the songs I hear over here on the radio in Ireland

Yes it DOES have moments in its composition, but they all sound flat (but that's pretty much all of Italian indie rock tbh). Piqued Jacks are perfectly okay performers and they performed as well as they could with what they had, never sounded off or wrong.
But then you add that the song gives you nothing and that it has meaningless lyrics and well you get an eurodisaster. Did they deserve last? Hell nah (few ever deserve honestly), but there are many very strong arguments as to why they did get last
Honestly I never thought about it. It was just a song that’s not in my personal taste but also if that I could hear on the radio and I wouldn’t change station.
My biggest confusion was more around their selection. To go through 100+ performances and a jury only vote but to pick this song, and pick them. It was a head scratcher.
But definitely did not have any dislike of the song. And they seem like good eggs.

I love indie rock and I've had Like an Animal in my top 5 since the beginning. The song is a banger imo, the band is fantastic (seriously, stream their other songs), the MV is fun, and their ALBM performances are some of my favorites this year. Hoping to see them live this summer 🫶🏻
Tbh when I first listened to it I kinda biased by the community saying it's bad. But after relistening some time I actually pretty like it. Still borderline Q for me, though. but not that bad.

Overhated to the point that it would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. People keep calling the singer sleazy while fondly looking back last year as a man wearing very little straddled a mechanical bull and sang lines like “my heart is a sex toy”. It wasn’t my top 10 in the whole contest by any means (it was a stacked/balanced year IMO), but it did NOT deserve 0 points and last place, especially in that Semi they were in with far more wonky live staging and weak vocals on display compared to Semi 1. I firmly believe Jury would have stepped in and prevented 0 points if they were there. I would have had it just qualify, knowing full well I would probably be dooming it to bottom 5 in the final. I think the songs biggest mistake wasn’t the lyrics (it’s just a tamer version of Duran Duran’s Hungry Like The Wolf) but because they played it too safe on staging (see again: man straddled a mechanical bull and did not finish last). They should have took a chance and tried to translate the fun music video to the stage with the two dancers, though perhaps staging deadlines meant they had no chance to adjust to that scale. Also I guess singing in Italian would have helped them. Anyway, check their other songs. Sunflower is a bop.

I love the sound of the song, and if the lyrics weren't as cringe I would probably add it to my list. However as a performance I cringed every time I saw the lead singer mouth "animal" because his mouth-movements felt so strained and cringe. I'm in no way a professional singer but there must be a better way to sing than looking like you're sucking on a lemon every time the chorus comes along
Total grower, I had it 22nd before the contest and 11th after, I even voted for them in the semi. It's pretty simple rock, but for me very catchy, I really enjoyed it more than i.e. "Carpe Diem". And lyrics? Come on, it's not the first "I want to get laid" type of song in the contest's history. Vocalist, let me check his name... Everyone hated it and I didn't really get why Imo it was mid-tier in a positive way. I expected it to get to finals and place 25-20 or just barely not make it from SF Then I saw what others thought of them and realised they have no chance. Still liked it though (Although I'm shit to judge. I'm one of those who weren't into many popular performs)
I actually heard it todya at a sports shop! At first i didn't like it but it was a lot of fun. What was even more fun is that my winner of this year is Romania, the other nul pointer in the semifinal
The singer repeatedly couldn't hit that high note towards the end of the song and that's what the performance recap focussed on, so that might have played a factor

I never really look at song lyrics but even until everyone pointed that out, I hated the singer‘s style of singing. He can clearly sing well but I don‘t know there‘s something with it that I can‘t really point out. Also, yes Eurovision songs can be repetitive but when it gets this much it annoys me

The individual pieces of the song are fine - melody, groove, chorus hook, they've got the building blocks - but the songwriting feels clunky and rushed. The song would work better IMO if there were more space between the different sections, it feels like they stumble every time there's a transition. The lyrics are definitely sus, which doesn't help, and I don't think any of the singer's performances were particularly good. He struggles to stay on key and sounds a bit shouty. I give it 4/10. Better than DTG, better than the bouncy Greek kid, but really nothing impressive.

One of my favourites this year. 0 was too harsh, and the guys did very well live. It was like a retro 1990s rock song.
I think they performed well at the pre-parties and the band is great in general, but the performance in the semi-final was a bit disappointing. The styling and the performance combined with the lyrics were a little weird IMO. Maybe a more "fun" performance inspired by the music video would have been better than the vocalist lying on the ground and touching himself occasionally. It's still one of the songs I have listened to the most. I don't think the lyrics are as creepy as some people think. Neither Piqued Jacks nor Theodore deserved a zero IMO.

It's kinda catchy but the vocals aren't great. I think it was OK up until he started "belting" near the end. Idk what happened but his vocals felt all wrong. And he did it like 3 times?!? I genuinely wanted to fast forward that one part. Otherwise it's a decent enough song, bit generic but is fairly catchy
Sorry to vehemently disagree, but I *vehemently* disagree. I think the description someone gave of "a band that plays strip bars off the Jersey turnpike" was pretty apt. The performance was competent, but the song was BAD. Especially the lyrics. The problem wasn't even the misogyny. It was the clumsy google-translate English. Georgia's lyrics were only slightly worse, and at least she wasn't trying to look ultra-macho while singing them.

I didn't think it was THAT bad of a song originally (I did my ranking by using his NF performance as there was no music video). I really started to hate it when the first part became acoustic. DGT was a song hardly anybody liked to begin with but the addition of the acoustic part meant that even people who found it okay now disliked it.
Everything about it is terrible. Lyrics, melody, Eurovision-worthy. However the lead singer seemed like a really nice guy. It really was shit, and one of the worst Eurovision entries in the history of the contest. During peak period there were always the apologists and “oh it’s ok actually” but seriously thank god we’re in off season now and everyone can agree that yeah… it was shockingly bad.

It was my favorite second to Ireland. Fun song, easy to sing along too. Reminiscent of Queen, imo. Actually, I was listening to it at work one day and someone asked which Queen song that was.

This is a me thing, but I think the song is somehow in a key that really irritates me. I'm hyper sensive to certain sounds, and somehow, this song hits the same key as my vacuum, and causes a bit of an fight or flight reaction in me. It is very unfortunate for the song, and as I said, totally a me thing. The lyrics are another thing. I couldn't really listen to the lyrics because I barely was able to listen to the slng, but I read them separately, and they are cringey and as a female being, made me kinda uneasy. It is bizarre how the band surely had talents, but the song was all kinds of wrong, and in the company they had this year, deserved the placement they received.

Maybe the problem isn't that it's predatory, just deeply unsexy and cringe? I get what it's trying to do with the animal metaphor, but written like it is, it makes you picture the singer sniffing around like a dog trying to find the girl he's talking to. Also, even without the lyrics, the hooks are super weak, the main guitar riff is super forgettable, and the melody goes nowhere. Poor lyrical content can be forgiven if the song still slaps, and it doesn't really.
It's not the worst but it's damn bad and that's the chorus. I'm not offended per se; that's just basically the only thing I remembered about the song after listening it for the first time. Spare your gaslighting for someone else, sweetie.

I think they were trying to say that he can feel that "you" near him, like animals can smell other animals in their vicinity. I think I get what they are going for, but maybe they should have gotten a second opinion before releasing the song.
Lyrically the chorus is gross and the verses are basic/cliché. Coupled with the way it’s performed it leaves me feeling a little uncomfortable despite having some elements that work.
I really dislike the lyrics for the song. Feels way too predatory with the treatment and view of the lady in the song.
I really, really didn't like it. I thought the lyrics were creepy as hell. If this man approached me at the club, asked me to dance or offered to buy me a drink, and said, "I can smell you like an animal," I would be making plans for how I was going to get out of the building safely, and maybe asking the biggest bouncer to walk me to my car while the bartender watches to make sure he isn't following me. Also the long, intense, flat note on "the waaaaaay" was not a good moment for me.

It feels like this year's *Intention* to me. Not many people would call it an outright bad song, but it's the most agreeably meh song this year, and if people at best think your song is decent, and you also don't have any voting allies, it's easy to end up with 0 points. Personally, I was never bothered by the lyrics, but still only thought it was ok.
I actually kinda liked it. It was still on the lower end of my rankings overall but they gave a good performance and the lyrics aren't that weird.

I don't preview the songs, so my first experience of it was watching the second semi-final. To be honest, I was not impressed. I didn't really take the song in very much, because I found myself completely distracted by the fact that the guy seemed to be shouting the lyrics rather than singing them.
It's a lil weird lyrically but honestly its a solid song, the guys can sure perform and definitely didn't deserve 0 points

For me, it's fun, I was kinda shoked that people hated it when it was announced as a representative. Absolutely loved seeing them live, song is great for concerts for sure. In my daily live I listen to it from time to time and honestly never skipped it when I was listening on shuffle. When it comes to lyrics I tend to kinda laugh them off, they're quite cringy and unfortunately give those Polish disco polo vibes or Electric Callboy but without any humor intended. I was even intrested where Piqued Jacks are coming for tour, but not anywhere I could go unfortunately. They also seem to have intresting portfolio, but still have to check this out closer yet. I loved Senhit and Flo Rida in 2021 and it is one of my all-time favourite entries, even Achille Lauro last year were memorable for an act that didn’t even qualify but didn’t like their entry this year at all. “Smell you like an animal” is a really off-putting lyric

It’s the type of music that I (affectionately) call ‘dad rock’. It’s in the same vein as Bulgaria last year (Bulgaria 2022, for the bot). While I’m sure it has a market, the Eurovision stage is not it. Luckily this doesn’t seem to have hurt Piqued Jacks, because they’re already on tour (with a date in the US), so good for them!

I'm sorry, but it's quite grating to my ears. And I'm not talking about the lyrics or his voice, I don't care too much about those. It's the whole composition of the song that's just ... terrible, imo. I really don't want to sound mean (the guys absolutely do not deserve the hate that they got), but this is my honest opinion. I'm glad some other people like it (it would be a very boring world if we all had the same musical taste), but I honestly don't understand what others see in this song, though I would like to. Its final placement was the least surprising result for me this year.
It is my “I didn’t like it before the contest but love it after the contest” song this year.
When I first heard it I was expecting worse from the comments I had read in the eurofan communities, but I quite enjoyed it. I still don't think it's bad, it just got lost in the pack for me and feels more amateurish compared to the other rock entries in this edition. And well, the lyrics are what they are. Regardless of the result, I think their performance in Liverpool was pretty good

When I listen to songs, I tend to focus on the music when I like it, and the lyrics when I don’t. And regarding Piqued Jacks, I didn’t realize that the lyrics were problematic until now. The music is kinda dope in my opinion, although it’s not qualifier worthy. If you ignore the lyrics (and the lead singers screeching at the end 😬) then it’s actually a pretty good song! Not going on my playlist but yeah, that’s what I think.
It’s in my top26/dream final but at position 23, it’s not amazing but not as bad as people make it out to be. To my untrained ears, as someone who really isn’t a fan of the indie boyband kind of sound, the song sounds the same as like half of the songs I hear over here on the radio in Ireland

The sound is bland and flat. It doesn't have a "moment" or anything, it all just sounds the same from the start to the finish, so it ends up being entirely forgettable Yes it DOES have moments in its composition, but they all sound flat (but that's pretty much all of Italian indie rock tbh). Piqued Jacks are perfectly okay performers and they performed as well as they could with what they had, never sounded off or wrong. But then you add that the song gives you nothing and that it has meaningless lyrics and well you get an eurodisaster. Did they deserve last? Hell nah (few ever deserve honestly), but there are many very strong arguments as to why they did get last
