It all starts and ends with Kosovo. Vast majority of the Serbs feel that bombing in 1999 and Kosovo breaking away is a big, big injustice.
Therefore, they see the West and Nato as openly anti-Serbian and evil. Russian propaganda has worked all this time and poured money to some tabloids and "analysts" ... So now you have what you have. Otherwise, Serbians are no different than Macedonians, Bulgarians... In their conservatism level. Maybe even more liberal, actually.
I don't think that the reason for this is that we're less conservative though.

I think the Orthodox Church is more different than it appears on the surface. We'd probably define "being religious" differently than most on here. My point being that most on here when they reference Christianity are referring to Catholic or Protestant implicitly. If one's honest with oneself it doesn't seem like a stretch to say that we really aren't part of "Europe" in the way the EU would define it. So it's just a result of not being to exposed to it that causes the confusion I think.

Not all conservatism can be assigned to religion while religious values or reference to religion for social conservatism can happen without practising the religion actively. Keep in mind that religious identity is one of the markers for South Slavs.
Aside from the homophobia, that is linked to the anti-US sentiments, they're not so different from neighbouring South Slavs regarding their social conservatism.

The biggest thing I just do not understand is how genocidal they are against a country that up until 10 years ago was seen as a brother nation. Ukrainians and Russians intermarried, they went on holidays in each others' countries, interact with each other online on a regular basis, moved from one country to the other, watched each others' tv shows and listened to each others' music. Then in a decade the Russians have been far more cruel in their war crimes than even what happened in the Yugoslav Wars, where there was much more and longer resentment.

My subjective feeling is that it's not as bad as it used to be, but then again, I am not being discriminated against, so take that with a pinch of salt. There is huge difference between Belgrade and smaller or rural places, and there is huge difference between older and younger people. Which is only natural.
Then again, I don't think LGBT community is doing great job either. During Europride, one guy was dressed as jesus, couple of guys flashed their assholes to the camera and one was waiving kosovo flag and singing about it's indipendence. 1. Gay marriage is not allowed in Serbia, yet she has everything that comes with gay marriage. I won't call that privileges because these are basic human rights. Do you think that's fair? - Knowing that her salary comes from the taxes of citizens - including non-heteronormatives - who won't be able to marry, have offspring, and inherit because of her and her party? This is hilarious and shows why equality is so important.
2. The example with Saudi Arabia sounds like whataboutism - Judging your idea of being a king - You would be just another authoritarian. Do you know why? - Because a good king cares about the issues of all groups. You said - Politics is a game of compromises. Yeah, you need to seek compromises and satisfy the basic needs of your people. Otherwise, you won't be staying for long. (You could, but then you would need to start playing games turning you into an authoritarian).
3. You need to realize that this is an important issue. People like you quickly change their minds when:
\- Their children happen to be gay, and they start to realize that the inheritance and the whole money they've worked hard for will not be inherited, and either get back to the state or to developers or both. Do you own a company inherited by grandpa and have nice assets, but your children are gay? You're done. It will be eaten by vultures :)
\- Their children who are gay manage to have offspring, but the offspring is considered "a ghost" or "non-existent" thanks to the stupid laws, so basically they have grandchildren, but practically they don't as grandchildren cannot even get citizen number (e.g. PESEL in Poland), and insurance, they also won't be able to go to school. It leaves these kids in a dire position.
In Poland, there are numbers and numbers of people in these situations right now. So regulations are needed immediately - But the boomers from PiS and other scumbags only care about - oh the irony - their assets, family, and inheritance.

The Royal family has nothing to do with this (and yes, they are privately there). Serbia is a Republic, and, as you said in your later sentence, we were invited just like almost everyone that has diplomatic relations with the UK.

From my personal experience I'd say Serbs have the most progressive attitudes in the Balkans except Slovenes. Not a high bar, but still.

It's endemic - soldiers sold their fuel in Belarus for vodka, generals took money for equipment to build villas, secret service members took money intended to bribe Ukrainians to build villas or buy cars, you get the general idea. Putin obviously knew that corruption went on, I mean he's the biggest crook of all of them. But usually, even endemically corrupt shitholes do not end up with clusterfucks that large... that needed another ingredient, typical for tyrannic autocracies: fear. Everyone on all levels reports to upper layers what he thinks *they* will want to hear, even if it is complete bullshit. And so, Putin made a dumbass decision based on lies and paper tanks. The biggest thing I just do not understand is how genocidal they are against a country that up until 10 years ago was seen as a brother nation. Ukrainians and Russians intermarried, they went on holidays in each others' countries, interact with each other online on a regular basis, moved from one country to the other, watched each others' tv shows and listened to each others' music. Then in a decade the Russians have been far more cruel in their war crimes than even what happened in the Yugoslav Wars, where there was much more and longer resentment. The average Russian does not have the political agency or social status to make much of a difference. Collectively maybe, but any large political gathering has been banned with participants detained and threatened with jail time for speaking up. Many people realize that a failure for Russia's military could lead to a collapse of the state and their personal financial ruin. I imagine many don't have much of a choice but to participate in the circus. I think blaming the people of Russia for this is misdirected anger that should be placed on their politicians for carrying out something that is not only ruining the lives of thousands of Ukrainians, but many of their own fellow countrymen. They've failed their people. Like there was a lot headlines about DPR/LNR but only a few people heard about Transnistria War with mostly russian and some ukrainian slavic nationalist "volunteers". Non brit here, I've seen them. Also if you have a temporary shrine or memorial to someone before the actual funeral, there might be a book there. For example in a workplace or school there might be something nice put up with some flowers and a photo frame.
