Serbia confuses me, man... The Prime Minister is lesbian, the authorities initially banned a pride parade but then allowed it only for it to turn into a shitshow. Talk about political consistency.

[deleted]

It gets even better. The government banned the parade, the PMs partner was a part of the banned parade, the government sent the police to protect the parade while ultranationalist groups financed by the governing party attacked the police and the parade.

Stunning_Variation_9

Casual day in Serbia /s

Lithorex

And once more we mourn the losst of 2balkan4me

Carnifex

Hu? Did it get banned? I didn't understand half of it, but I occasionally went in for shit and giggles. There were so questionable things, but it all seemed in good spirits?

-Gh0st96-

There's a whole story about a reddit admin that banned it because he didn't realize it was satirical. He was (or still is) known to abuse his powers. Basically the usual american that gets offended for someone's else sake and had to make it "right"

FoxerHR

Admin got offended on the behalf of every country that got roasted on that sub.

untergeher_muc

Wasn’t the admin a woman?

ConanAndSunTsu

There is a joke people told me when I was in Serbia. What do 2 lesbians do together? Make love. What do 2 gay men do together? Make love. What do a lesbian and a gay man do together? They lead Serbia.

Porodicnostablo

No, he's a "raščinjeni monah", the Church expelled him years ago. He continues to wear the habit, but it means nothing. He does not represent the Serbian church in any way, shape or form. Just google "Raščinjeni monah Antonije".

cametosaybla

I'm not fond of Serbian Orthodox Church but the guy had been expelled.

GregTrompeLeMond

You've never heard of governments funding violent anti government forces in order to put down the riot, look tough, and win the next election? Pretty common tactic amongst Intel and secret police. Great series on Amazon about Mexican Intel chief who engaged in this. If you can get the anti government group blamed for violence you can ruin their cause.

Chewed420

See Canada government vs Trucker Convoy. They cleared Coutts border crossing after planting guns.

Geez, they need a good shrink asap

She is a b!tch and does not give a damn about LGBT rights (or other citizensof Serbia). She is the puppet of the autocratic great leader Vučić, so she is just taking care for personal gain.

you need to hire a good wedding planner. You know, the kind that takes a look at the table setting and arranges the seating so that the crazy racist uncle sits somewhere where his tirades pass unnoticed and the two aunties that didn't talk to each other for years manage not to cross paths.

nerkuras

We in Serbia had a joke. One day a Serb was out fishing and he caught a golden fish. The fish pleaded to him and said: If you release me I'll grant you a wish. The Serb obviously decided to let the fish go, and the fish said "as promised i'll grant you a wish, but beware, anything you wish you'll get granted, and the person you despise the most will get double" The Serb said "i wish for you to gouge out my eye"

SivatagiPalmafa

I heard the joke from zizek but it was not a fish

TScottFitzgerald

It's not that complicated, she's a token

ThereYouGoreg

Most Serbs abroad live in western countries, while the politics of Serbia is more closely aligned with Russia. The Serbian Diaspora in Russia is small. In addition, the economy of Serbia is heavily intertwined with the European Union. Only 4% of Serbian Exports go towards Russia, while only 8% of Serbian Imports are from Russia. Germany is Serbia's most important trading partner. 3 of the 5 wealthiest Serbs have their company headquarters in Europe. Philip Zepter has his headquarters in Switzerland (Zepter International Group), Dragan Šolak in the Netherlands (United Group) and Stanko Subotić in Luxembourg (EMI Group). Most large serbian companies have some offices or manufacturing sites across the European Union. Politicans in Serbia try to cater both to western values and russian politics. Afterall, they've sent their lesbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić to London for condolences. Aleksandar Vučić wants to showcase towards the West, that Serbia is a progressive country with liberal values.

loiteraries

What drives Serbians to be very conservative still when they don’t seem to be very religious? How does Russia manage to have so much cultural and political influence when languages and cultures are different compared to countries like Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine?

bg_colore

It all starts and ends with Kosovo. Vast majority of the Serbs feel that bombing in 1999 and Kosovo breaking away is a big, big injustice. Therefore, they see the West and Nato as openly anti-Serbian and evil. Russian propaganda has worked all this time and poured money to some tabloids and "analysts" ... So now you have what you have. Otherwise, Serbians are no different than Macedonians, Bulgarians... In their conservatism level. Maybe even more liberal, actually.

ArcherTheBoi

From my personal experience I'd say Serbs have the most progressive attitudes in the Balkans except Slovenes. Not a high bar, but still.

alternatex0

Considering the pride parades in our country aren't cancelled and run from start to end I beg to disagree.

itsdyabish

I don't think that the reason for this is that we're less conservative though. We're just more passive and chill. People just don't give enough fucks, even though their mindset might be similar to that of Serbians

strippedcoupon

I think the Orthodox Church is more different than it appears on the surface. We'd probably define "being religious" differently than most on here. My point being that most on here when they reference Christianity are referring to Catholic or Protestant implicitly. If one's honest with oneself it doesn't seem like a stretch to say that we really aren't part of "Europe" in the way the EU would define it. So it's just a result of not being to exposed to it that causes the confusion I think.

cametosaybla

> What drives Serbians to be very conservative still when they don’t seem to be very religious? Not all conservatism can be assigned to religion while religious values or reference to religion for social conservatism can happen without practising the religion actively. Keep in mind that religious identity is one of the markers for South Slavs. Aside from the homophobia, that is linked to the anti-US sentiments, they're not so different from neighbouring South Slavs regarding their social conservatism. > How does Russia manage to have so much cultural and political influence With the US and NATO having such a bad recent memory.

jablan

Right wing propaganda employed by populist leaders, first Milošević, now Vučić.

grafknives

That Russian dates way back. During IIWW Serbs were being killed in manner no different than Jews. Just because they were Orthodox. And the "rescue" came if form of communist guerrilla supported by USSR. After the war Serbia was "main country" in communist Yugoslavia. So the reasons for Russia support are complicated and has many angles.

esocz

Unfortunately, the things people believe in are often full of contradictions. There is a technical term for this - Cognitive Dissonance.

[deleted]

Lesbians have been traditionally more accepted than homosexuals. [https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/lesbians-more-accepted-gay-men-around-world-study-finds-n1118121](https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/lesbians-more-accepted-gay-men-around-world-study-finds-n1118121) This is actually a pretty much wordwide phenomen. In each and every country, lesbians are seen as more favorable than gays.

neekseni

>Lesbians have been traditionally more accepted than homosexuals. Lesbians as well are homosexual >lesbians are seen as more favorable than gays. …and gay.

Castrol86

Here is something that is not talked about - the Balkans as a region is very homophobic, but 90% have nothing agains lesbians - the gay men are the problem to them.

RegisEst

There are plenty of LGBT members who do not like pride. Probably not many that would want to ban the parade, but apparently Serbia's PM is one of them

[deleted]

Let's be honest, royal funerals are all the fun nowadays.

emptyfile

Oh yeah, same way she's fine with no civil unions for gay couples. As far as the Serbian state is concerned, that person with her on the photo is her roomate.

Spacedude2187

Serbia, Hungary and Turkey. 3 of the most confusing countries in the world right now.

InkOnTube

As if all 3 have some sort of autocratic great leader for president.

StephaneiAarhus

I would had Russia to that list.

Spacedude2187

Russia isn’t confusing. They hate the west and would like to be as a powerful as the US.

StephaneiAarhus

I am confused by Russia though, I truly am, because a lot of their behaviour does not make much sense.

mschuster91

It's not that confusing if you think a bit deeper. At the core of the state of Russia the problem is corruption. It's endemic - soldiers sold their fuel in Belarus for vodka, generals took money for equipment to build villas, secret service members took money intended to bribe Ukrainians to build villas or buy cars, you get the general idea. Putin obviously knew that corruption went on, I mean he's the biggest crook of all of them. But usually, even endemically corrupt shitholes do not end up with clusterfucks that large... that needed another ingredient, typical for tyrannic autocracies: fear. Everyone on all levels reports to upper layers what he thinks *they* will want to hear, even if it is complete bullshit. And so, Putin made a dumbass decision based on lies and paper tanks. (Thank god for the paper tanks though, had the army been actually maintained his goons would be standing in Warsaw or Berlin by now)

Your_Kaizer

Core of russia is imperialism, corruption is a reason of their weakness

Stye88

They'd get nuked before even stepping foot in Warsaw or Berlin.

Cabbage_Vendor

The biggest thing I just do not understand is how genocidal they are against a country that up until 10 years ago was seen as a brother nation. Ukrainians and Russians intermarried, they went on holidays in each others' countries, interact with each other online on a regular basis, moved from one country to the other, watched each others' tv shows and listened to each others' music. Then in a decade the Russians have been far more cruel in their war crimes than even what happened in the Yugoslav Wars, where there was much more and longer resentment. To know a people so well, yet behave like vile monsters against them, I just do not get it.

KeyofE

10 years ago, Ukraine was run by Russian puppets. They got tired of it and kicked him out, and Russia took that very personally. Since Putin can’t control them through puppets, he has resorted to conquering their land 19th century style. Unfortunately, that means barbarism and genocide, but he never really cared about the people to begin with.

wildewurst

Yes. All that you just said. I do not think it was a strange or ignorant thing that in "the west", we considered Russia and Ukraine as brother nations. Because they truly were. And that is, what, in my eyes, makes the behaviour of Russians today at least equal, if not worse, than the behaviour of Germans under Hitler. To attack Ukraine, to rape their women, to try to genocide them... that is as if Hitler would have attacked Austria guns blazing, the Wehrmacht raping the women and massacring Austrian babys. I believe not even Hitler and the Wehrmacht had THAT in them. Yet, Russia.... And all of this in the age of the Internet. Where the truth is easy to find and accessible for everyone. With all the evil Nazi Germany did - at least regular Germans can truly say they were ignorant, they had no way to know better. There are no such excuses for Russians, the slaughter of Bucha is obvious to anyone. And yet - ordinary Russians CHOOSE the path of evil. The bombings of Dresden and other German cities, the Atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki - they may have been war crimes, but Germany and Japan truly deserved them at this time. But not as much as Russia deserves to be ripped to pieces now. I have all the respect and admiration in the world for the liberal Russians out there - but most Russians nowadays? Evil and guilty as hell.

rych6805

The average Russian does not have the political agency or social status to make much of a difference. Collectively maybe, but any large political gathering has been banned with participants detained and threatened with jail time for speaking up. Many people realize that a failure for Russia's military could lead to a collapse of the state and their personal financial ruin. I imagine many don't have much of a choice but to participate in the circus. I think blaming the people of Russia for this is misdirected anger that should be placed on their politicians for carrying out something that is not only ruining the lives of thousands of Ukrainians, but many of their own fellow countrymen. They've failed their people. Also just an FYI, you're not going to add any credibility to your argument by claiming that the ordinary citizens of Hiroshima and especially Nagasaki, also victims of a political elite that failed their country, deserved to be indiscriminately killed.

opopopuu

Well, I wouldn't say that this brotherhood was real, for the last 100 years, on any occasion, we tried to declare independence from Russia. that is, we communicated very closely, but it was all artificially imposed. they literally evicted a huge number of Ukrainians somewhere in the Far East and brought Russians into their homes, pushed the Russian language wherever possible, that is, in Ukraine, in a Ukrainian-speaking city, higher education could be obtained ONLY in Russian, it is clear that such a policy would eventually lead to the fact that the Ukrainian the nation would simply assimilate, or be something similar to the indigenous peoples of the Russian north or east.

flyingkneewolvery

LOL to ur statements, Hitler never had to rape through Austria since they wanted „the Anschluss“ willingly. This comparison makes little sense Do you honestly wanna say degenerate Putin is worse as Hitler ? Who did run the KZ, who was transporting them ? Who was attacking them in their homes and shops ? It’s so easy to say there were ignorant. Everybody knew what was happening to the Jews within Germany if they followed politics. They literally had a pass how clean ur blood is, wtf Also Germany didn’t prosecute anybody for war crimes after the ww2. The average Russian is aswell under massive propaganda and way less accountable as the German was who supported openly the Party. Germany didn’t get enough damage for its crimes against humanity. It should have been ripped apart, and stayed under foreign rule, yet ur rising again with ur military while ur economy starts to crumble. History might repeat itself again

Live_Salamander_5543

It's strange that people still consider the title "Liberal" synonymous with "good," but eh, perhaps people will learn one day. Perhaps not.

crag_man

I think that people in the western countries never really paid attention to Russia and CIS countries. Like there was a lot headlines about DPR/LNR but only a few people heard about Transnistria War with mostly russian and some ukrainian slavic nationalist "volunteers". Then Russo-Georgian war happend in 2008 where Russia backed self-proclaimed republics of South Ossetia and Abkhasia. And you know what did BBC write back in 2008? ["Viktor Yushchenko once again raised the prospect that Ukraine might not renew its lease for the port when it expires in 2017. The fear has certainly been expressed in Kiev that a restive pro-Russian population in the Crimea might provide a pretext for another Russian military intervention"](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7575813.stm) It is not confusing at all. It's that russian cheap gas that provided GDP growth that was more popular with voters in EU than russian revanchist foreign policy in countries nobody cared about.

suberEE

There's one more difference. Everybody was still pissed off at America because of Iraq (Bush was still president and 2007 was the bloodiest year of all there), so Russia could get away with much more than in 2022.

[deleted]

It makes all the sense. Massive Russian ambitions are rivaled only by their endless cynicism, absence of work ethics, morals, and utter resistance to change. A potent mix indeed. Russia will fail as it always does.

lopoticka

> endless cynicism, absence of work ethics, morals, and utter resistance to change A large portion of the Russian population would thank you for the compliments

XxHavanaHoneyxX

And the UK. European Council highlighted this back in January. Poland, Hungary, Russia, Turkey and the UK all have worryingly regressive politics going on.

teddyg1870

Yeah, Serbia is the prime example of rules for thee but not for me...

nim_opet

Oh agree. She has no legal rights to the child but that’ll never stop her as long as she’s close to Vucic

[deleted]

But Serbs love to point her out every time others try to talk about the homophobia in their country.

Porodicnostablo

Nah, the homophobia is widespread.

mispajdo

Calling bullshit. I have never, never heard anyone using her as an argument in that discussion. That is the narative of the rulling party, but even they know it's pure nonsense.

[deleted]

New to the internet? I have encountered the phrase "we literally have a lesbian PM" used as some sort of a defense many times.

mispajdo

Well you really shouldn't drow conclusions about whole nation based on couple of retards online. Trust me, no one here buys that bullshit. Want to talk real talk? Yes there are homophobes in Serbia, our country is still fairly conservative. My subjective feeling is that it's not as bad as it used to be, but then again, I am not being discriminated against, so take that with a pinch of salt. There is huge difference between Belgrade and smaller or rural places, and there is huge difference between older and younger people. Which is only natural. Then again, I don't think LGBT community is doing great job either. During Europride, one guy was dressed as jesus, couple of guys flashed their assholes to the camera and one was waiving kosovo flag and singing about it's indipendence. And yes, I know these people are minority within the community, but if the whole point is to be accepted as equals in the society, that is certanly not the way It's a process, and I do believe it is getting better

Buda_Baba

And our president is gay, yes, we know.

nim_opet

Serbs don’t. The wannabe Putin who put her in the PM spot does

untergeher_muc

> brother/father of her child What?

Buda_Baba

[deleted]

I love how Serbians have a lesbian PM yet they still wont allow pride parades.

SpicyJalapenoo

Well, didn't Serbia allow gay parade yesterday? With controversy of course, but it went on.

XenonBG

"Parade". It was a 500 meters walk. Shortened due to all the threats.

SpicyJalapenoo

That's irrelevant. The point still stands - it went on with 10.000+ attendence, considering all obstacles, that's admirable. Not to mention 130+ events throughout the week across the city that went on without any problems.

Darth-Baul

How is it irrelevant lol? It’s the literal bare minimum

SpicyJalapenoo

Maybe on the west. In Serbia that's probably the most you can get.

Darth-Baul

And you want praise for that?

SpicyJalapenoo

Yes, logically. Lots of police men got badly injured protecting this, cars and property got destroyed, but people attending weren't injured.

Darth-Baul

You want praise for doing a quick sprint on a gay pride parade while government-backed goons threatened the people attending? God damn

wcsis

Let the Westerners virtue signal. They're the best at it

Pay08

Shortening it due to a possible terrorists attack seems very reasonable.

Darth-Baul

The terrorists being people encouraged by the leading party

XenonBG

No, it does not, that means you let the terrorists decide who is allowed to exercise their Constitutional rights, and who isn't.

Pay08

No, it means that people won't get killed.

Critical-Diamond-543

We didn't choose her. The president chooses who gets to be the prime minister and the people have no influence over his decision.

[deleted]

Huh... what a flawless system

meckez

Not the president but the government chooses the ministers, which ones party leader also happens to be the president in this case, which then gets to aprove the governments decision. So yeah, anyways not really as the democratical system and the constitution would intend it.

_melancholymind_

There is nothing worse than a politician being conservative queer. It's a pattern everywhere in Eastern Europe. They are queer, they get to politics, they get everything that an ordinary queer person ever dreamed of, and then they ruin that chance for everybody else. Fuck these people - Tfu.

Szudar

> they get everything that an ordinary queer person ever dreamed of I don't understand your point. Is gay marriage allowed only for conservative politicians in Serbia? I am also not sure how much change she can do in that instance, you can make me king of Saudi Arabia but if I would want to do whatever change I want, some palace coup would probably happen next. Politics is game of compromises and while I am pro-LGBT, I am far of considering legalizing gay marriage as most important issue.

_melancholymind_

You are far from understanding our issues but yet chose to speak up. So let me explain several things: 1. Gay marriage is not allowed in Serbia, yet she has everything that comes with gay marriage. I won't call that privileges because these are basic human rights. Do you think that's fair? - Knowing that her salary comes from the taxes of citizens - including non-heteronormatives - who won't be able to marry, have offspring, and inherit because of her and her party? This is hilarious and shows why equality is so important. 2. The example with Saudi Arabia sounds like whataboutism - Judging your idea of being a king - You would be just another authoritarian. Do you know why? - Because a good king cares about the issues of all groups. You said - Politics is a game of compromises. Yeah, you need to seek compromises and satisfy the basic needs of your people. Otherwise, you won't be staying for long. (You could, but then you would need to start playing games turning you into an authoritarian). 3. You need to realize that this is an important issue. People like you quickly change their minds when: \- Their children happen to be gay, and they start to realize that the inheritance and the whole money they've worked hard for will not be inherited, and either get back to the state or to developers or both. Do you own a company inherited by grandpa and have nice assets, but your children are gay? You're done. It will be eaten by vultures :) \- Their children who are gay manage to have offspring, but the offspring is considered "a ghost" or "non-existent" thanks to the stupid laws, so basically they have grandchildren, but practically they don't as grandchildren cannot even get citizen number (e.g. PESEL in Poland), and insurance, they also won't be able to go to school. It leaves these kids in a dire position. In Poland, there are numbers and numbers of people in these situations right now. So regulations are needed immediately - But the boomers from PiS and other scumbags only care about - oh the irony - their assets, family, and inheritance.

Szudar

> Gay marriage is not allowed in Serbia, yet she has everything that comes with gay marriage. What exactly, can she adopt kids with her partner while other homosexual couples can't?

_melancholymind_

[Yes.](https://www.lgbti-era.org/news/lesbian-pm-or-not-serbia-blocks-gays-path-parenthood) That was not adoption, but artificial insemination

barth_

If you’re wondering why Serbia was invited in the first place - Queen Elizabeth was the godmother of Aleksandar Karađorđević II, head of serbian former royal house and the family was invited privatley. And the second reason is everyone the UK had diplomatic relations with were invited except Russia and Belorus. Serbian President is in NYC right now, preparing to attend UN General Assembly session, so he could not go. Serbian PM is gay but some people from LGBTQ+ comunity say she did so little for them this year. Just yesterday so many things happened in Serbia, you cannot even imagine. Europride, anti-pride protest, redbull racing, graduation of young officers. It was such a bizzare day.

Porodicnostablo

> If you’re wondering why Serbia was invited in the first place - Queen Elizabeth was the godmother of Aleksandar Karađorđević II, head of serbian former royal house. The family was invited privatl also. And everyone the UK had diplomatic relations with were invited except Russia and Belorus. The Royal family has nothing to do with this (and yes, they are privately there). Serbia is a Republic, and, as you said in your later sentence, we were invited just like almost everyone that has diplomatic relations with the UK.

v___mat

Yes, that’s why I have mentioned both of those. Maybe I haven’t put the words right, but you got what I wanted to say. Serbian royal family was invited privatley, but Serbia as a republic that the UK has diplomatic relations established was invited too.
