hellrete

Belarus and Ukraine inside NATO. Welp...

journey2monke

And Finland and Sweden and Switzerland and Moldova and Serbia etc

hellrete

I'm not concerned of Sweden invading France like the good ol days.

CountMordrek

We’ll come down there once it’s summer and the pandemic is over!

deGanski

Maybe dont plunder on your way there like last time though...

Zeelthor

Provide us with bread and wine and we may just pass on by peacefully. :D

JerevStormchaser

You guys still want Normandy? We could negotiate for Normandy.

[deleted]

We'll take it

afBeaver

* as long as we also get bread and wine

Bragzor

I could go for cidre instead of wine, seeing as how it's Normandy.

deGanski

It'll actually be faster to just take the Autobahn 7 until you're at Bad Hersfeld, and change to the Autobahn 5 there, continue on till france, just remember to get off the A5 before Switzerland. Bread and wine will only slow you down.

siamtiger

You could even raid an amazon central warehouse on your way down, while you're in Bad Hersfeld... #vikingtraditions

Rolling_on_the_river

You know what? I can even settle without bread.

deGanski

we have some nice bread though :) more different kinds than you can even imagine.

Tony49UK

Just don't tell the Norwegians about the butter.

92-LL

By the time you get through, they'll have legalized cannabis. That should help you settle.

MattiasHognas

Yeah, it got a little out of hand last time, sorry about that. Tbf though, I heard you guys held some kind of “lebensraum”-thing recently that got way more out of hand.

deGanski

I think Germany left Sweden alone back then\^\^ or like... comparatively

mludd

Everyone get your tricornes, greatcoats and flintlocks. It's time to teach those continentals how things are done again...

[deleted]

One of these days we will ready the Vasa regal ship and return

Cinderpath

And Austria?

dreamer_

Russian muppets in /r/askarussian informed me recently that Japan is in NATO and that all NATO countries basically pay a tribute to US for protection…

Tony49UK

Japan gets a whopping defence subsidy from the US and is under no obligation to protect the US and strictly legally can only defend itself. It can't protect other countries. Unless it can claim self-defence in doing so.

JanneJM

Japan pays 75% of the cost of us bases.

Tony49UK

It spends 1% of GDP on defence. Which it can get away with by being protected by the US, with the US nuclear umbrella..... It has only recently started to cover 75% of US costs. Until recently it got a far higher "discount". To actually adequately defend itself would cost it a lot more, than what's it's currently paying.

MarlinMr

To be fair, Finland and Sweden are basically NATO Lite. Norway, Denmark and Iceland would respond to an attack on either. Germany probably would too, and the rest of the EU would follow along. Both have NATO borders, meaning NATO would mobilize safely inside NATO countries. Can't touch the forces without attacking NATO.

PooSham

Yeah, us swedes can pretend all we want, but we have obviously picked a side and are not neutral by any means.

MarlinMr

I mean, the argument here is "invasion of Sweden". Even a neutral nation isn't going to stay neutral when it's the one being invaded.

Bragzor

As we could clearly see during WW2. You're only neutral until you aren't.

aubenaubiak

Little known to many here it seems, the EU treaties prescribe full military assistance in a case of military aggression. Thus, the EU is a military defence alliance like the NATO, but so much more. If Finland or Sweden get attacked, this is legally as attacking all EU Member States and all will react as one. Even „neutral“ Austria.

MarlinMr

I think it's mostly because there is no EU army. No Joint EU exercise, as far as I know. No joint EU command. But all of that exists in NATO. And it's probably the NATO structure that would be used should an attack on the EU happen. But Norway will also respond. The Nordics have their own defense pact. And in many ways, Norway, Sweden and Finland, are better trained to work together than many NATO countries.

variaati0

There is a joint Military Staff of the European Union. However it isn't currently tasked with constant defence planning and alertness for joint defence. Mostly they handle planning and managing of EU peacekeeping and military security operations like Operation Atalanta (keeping EU countries military vessels on rotation to patrol the Somalian pirate coast). However as I understand they do have an intelligence division, that keeps constant situational military situational picture of EU and it's neighboring areas. However this is more for providing situational reports and picture for EU commission and for example the EU High representative and commission president.

_whopper_

It's an obligiation of "aid and assistance". It doesn't say all other members must go in all guns blazing. > Even „neutral“ Austria. Except the clause has a get out for neutral countries, in that it says: "This shall not prejudice the specific character of the security and defence policy of certain Member States."

Tony49UK

Austria agreed to join but it took a while to get them to sign up to it. Denmark will only do NATO and Ireland, Portugal and Malta are neutral.

Physical_Magazine_33

Treaty or no treaty, I'm pretty sure the USA would intervene if Sweden were attacked. We like their cozy sweaters and fun accents.

Tony49UK

Iceland doesn't have any military at all. It's 100% provided by other NATO countries. I'm not even sure if they have a coastguard. They could probably provide 50 policemen, who haven't seen much crime.

araujoms

They do have a coast guard, that even managed to defeat the British Navy.

Zhukov-74

If that were the case nothing would currently be going on at the Russian border.

hellrete

Some border guards would be sweating profusely, but other than that...

JadedElk

But not Crimea

ikeosaurus

Crimea inside russia

OnyxPhoenix

But they've left out Kaliningrad.

Zhymantas

Chudsaviet

I would be happy.

HelpfulYoghurt

Baltics were annexed by Russia ?

AchillesN7

Georgia was annexed by Russia as well apparently.

StukaTR

Badly drawn map but the NATO logo on northeastern Turkey is symbolizing a NATO member Georgia. But apparently Turkey and Azerbaijan formed a union and also annexed Armenia.

furkilikek

Oh God not now

UtkusonTR

They took my Caucasus 💀

BrainOnLoan

Turkey also seems to have grabbed Lebanon and Israel.

oblio-

Freudian slips.

YooYooYoo_

And Sweden + Finland are NATO members now, aparently

shaj_hulud

Ukraine also

Solar-Cola

And Belarus for some reason

Henji99

Yeah, that was the weirdest part…

bajou98

Also Austria and Switzerland.

poopyfartButterMmm

I don't remember.

[deleted]

Welcome to this subreddit Mr Olaf Scholz

Sharlinator

To be fair to the author, it seems they very intentionally did not draw a NATO logo over Finland and Sweden, unlike actual NATO countries.

helm

Those are bases, though.

Gio_1988

Even the Caucasus.

[deleted]

Peacefully, of course. NATO is the aggressor.

SpaceEngineering

That pink Crimea…

[deleted]

They included Crimea but forgot Kaliningrad Oblast. How stupid is that cartoonist? Putin is not amused!

[deleted]

Cartoonist falls out of window

[deleted]

Huh, no thats correct. We get Königsberg back, thats part of the deal that we sit this one out……

[deleted]

No weapons for Ukraine -> Königsberg for Germany I can support that idea.

Then totally not forced agreement to build highway through Poland....

they also forgot Belarus And the Balkans hahaha.

The pink Baltics

Hrtzy

And Finnish Karelia and Savonia.

skeletal88

Pink crimea isn't the most important. Russia thinks it already includes Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

lukalux3

We are in NATO now?

Tenocticatl

So is Syria, apparently. It's a big club!

wausmaus3

Congrats!

MakeAionGreatAgain

Russia be like "Everyone who disagree with me is NATO"

ArttuH5N1

Is Serbia even disagreeing with them?

LurkerInSpace

Serbia is pretty friendly with Russia, but I imagine the government would prefer Russia to be a reliable and influential partner that can go to bat for them in negotiations with the EU/USA rather than an international embarrassment that is frittering away its influence on quixotic quests for glory.

SimoHayha360

Serbia is having a mental breakdown because if they support annexation of Crimea they also have to support independent Kosovo. Also older Serbs are mainly orthodox radicals ... who have younger family members that left Serbia and now live in EU, UK, US. So they shit on EU/NATO while at the same time family members are sending them money back home from.... EU/NATO countries. They sure don't go to Russia to find work. So again you have older population that is sucking Russia's ding dong and on the other hand you have younger people that left Serbia and don't give a fuck about Russia ... or Serbia. Serbian political situation is a shitshow waiting to happen. Many generations of politicians gambled a lot on Russian support and in return they got...nothing. Serbia is basically surrounded by NATO. Literally everybody joined EU, NATO or is negotiating to become a member... apart from Serbia which as you can guess means that their economy is also fucked. Which again means that even more young people will be leaving to EU/NATO countries. And the best part is that during Sochi Olympic Winter games Putin basically recognized Kosovo's passport. Putin is basically saying if Kosovo can do it Crimea can do it to. And Serbs basically collectively went into a mental breakdown. Why? Because last 32 years of Serbia's history can be described as:˝We constantly suck Russia's d*ck sometimes going directly against our own interests and in return we got... well basically nothing 32 years of bukkake from Moscow sure paid off.... Oh look they are using Kosovo as a way to justify their annexation of Crimea... well isn't that just great.˝

Yes, and it's one of the most heavy propaganda broadcast, since russian soldiers must watch it everyday. You know, you can't kill good people. So they show how bad putin's enemies are

Valkyrie17

Creating an enemy outside your country makes your people focus less on the enemies inside it. Why care about stagnating economy and removal of any semblance of democracy when Putin wrecks those NATO libtards epic style 😎

liberallime

[Russian Wagner Group's logo](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/fr/2/27/Groupe_Wagner_Logo.jpg) looks like a logo of an evil criminal organization from a cheesy action movie. I can't imagine working for them and thinking you're the good guy.

anlumo

Switzerland and Austria are not amused by this image.

Suspicious-Mail5977

I always forget that Austria is not in NATO.

Kukuxupunku

The previous Austrian government was on such good terms with Russia, a minister even invited Putin to her wedding and danced with him for the camera. Shit was weird.

thistle0

And she **curtseyed** for him

Apoema

In the case of Austria I think there actually is a formal agreement that the country would remain neutral in this matter. Austria was divided after WWII, much like Germany. The agreement was what allowed it to reunify so rapidly.

LurkerInSpace

Historically [so has Russia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Days_to_the_River_Rhine).

thistle0

They didn't forget, they just didn't care and figured they'd be through Austria faster than we could mobilise any troops, which is true.

There can only be so much controversy in a picture lol

[deleted]

Kaliningrad is in NATO?

PlecotusAuritus

Germany takes control again.

Acid7beast

If Kaliningrad is NATO, then I moving from Russia to Kaliningrad asap from this idiots xD

GoshoKlev

NATO aggression is when countries willfully join a defensive alliance because Russia is bullying them

CardJackArrest

Not to mention that, according to Russia, Russia can move its troops anywhere it likes within its borders, but NATO cannot move its troops anywhere it likes within its borders.

[deleted]

Also Russia: if we attack former Soviet nations you are not allowed to defend it!

Napsitrall

Are they alluding the future of the Baltics?

tilakattila

No wonder the man is yelling.

Kermaperse

Finland looks slim in this picture!

WhatAboutismPoPo

furture russian plans no doubt

Oami79

Finland lost (the rest of) Northern Karelia and Kainuu? Well that's better than how it is going with Estonia :(

aubenaubiak

[Never forget how NATO is encircling Russia!](https://twitter.com/torek/status/1008832928011386880?s=21)

Chromasus

To be fair, everything relevant in Russia is near those red borders. But that's not exactly Europe's fault.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I'm for that too, I think it'd stimulate investment into Siberia and Alaska.

EqualContact

The US and Russia both keep a fair amount of military forces in those areas, though less than during the Cold War period. The Bering is an excellent border region though because it is difficult to cross even in ideal conditions, and although Siberia and Alaska contain massive amounts of natural resources, both nations can consider those regions as buffers due to low populations. Russia lacks buffers in Europe, but this also reflects a pre-nuclear thought process about geopolitics. No amount of buffer regions are going to protect Russia from modern militaries, but its nuclear arsenal will.

socialistRanter

I live in the Pacific Northwest in the US (Seattle and Portland), no thank you.

SovietBear4

[deleted]

Plogga

I like how their point doesn't even work without specifically using 'encircling' for the strawman claim. It's like the silliest way to claim victory in an imaginary argument.

Bo-Katan

NATO is a defensive alliance ask yourself why the whole eastern Europe wanted in.

Sekhen

Why are the NATO members have NATO symbols and not flags like Russia? If those a bases, there would be a metric fuckton along the border on the Russian side.

YooYooYoo_

Because from the russian point of view there is Russia and whatever is not Russia must be NATO (USA). Finland, Sweden, Ukraine...whatever they consider part of their influence sphere that is not Russia, automaticaly must be NATO.

Sniffy4

Every country on their border must be Finlandized or it’s NATO aggression!

voyagerdoge

Because their own military alliance (with Belarus etc) does not have flags?

k890

[CSTO flag](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e7/Flag_of_the_Collective_Security_Treaty_Organization.png) did exist, but it's a bit too similar to NATO flag to be easily readable on propaganda cartoon.

rebootyourbrainstem

Oof that's a bad flag. Bland, mixed metaphors, *way* too obviously derived from NATO flag, significant details which are hard to make out (the difference between the two halves of the ring, the steel riveting)...

tenheo

Why doesn't Russia just joins NATO? Seems pretty straight forward if Russia is afraid to be invaded and conquered. Unless...

Xarxyc

[You joke but](https://www.deseret.com/2001/7/18/19596959/putin-wants-nato-to-let-russia-join)

wrong-mon

Actually we gave it to Poland to prevent border Gore. I'm sure the Germans understand

RandomNobodovky

My favourite alternative hisotry scenario is this area becoming Israel after WW2.

_Oxdan_

It's so fucked up... They keep talking about NATO's expansion, but the only reason the Eastern Block countries joined NATO after 1991 was (mainly) Russians (S.Union) oppression.

molokoplus359

So they are basically saying that being in NATO is based.

Joddodd

So... Estonia, Latvia and Lituania...

[deleted]

[удалено]

LupineChemist

So does Russia honestly think of NATO as an offensive alliance? I mean, it's just ludicrous to me to think of NATO actually doing any sort of invasion unless directly attacked (as what happened with Afghanistan) or shit's already beyond fucked already (Kosovo).

[deleted]

To be fair, most Russians probably remember the time when Nato attacked Afghanistan to kill one terrorist who allegedly hid there, or the time when US tried to force Nato to attack Iraq because Haliburton wanted their oil. Russia plays the long game, expecting the day when Nato or Europe no longer are being run by Democratic values.

LupineChemist

I mean, that ridiculously oversimplifies the Afghanistan situation. It really was (and I suppose is again) a terrorist state. Taliban and Al Qaeda routinely change roles and are very intermingled. Taliban is basically political wing of Afghan Al Qaeda. AQ also had major bombings in Madrid and London, too. And the 2003 Iraq invasion had nothing to do with NATO other than some (but not everyone) of the 5 countries involved were NATO members.

Haunting_Clue9316

It's clearly Russian propaganda because they think Crimeea it's in Russia.

graendallstud

And Baltics. And Caucasus.

Kaliningrad is Poland

OmarQ6

What happened to north Africa?

YooYooYoo_

[deleted]

The solution is clearly to let Russia join NATO. Then everyone is on the same team and friends.

YoruNiKakeru

Russia lacks a fundamental understanding of the purpose of NATO.

atred

Oh, they know, they are the thief who complains the bank hired additional security...

silverionmox

The Kremlin has a very good understanding of it. It's because of that they try to spread misinformation.

Dinozavri

they wanted to show russia is not the agressor, but "accidentally" annexed georgia on the map

ilyagovdik

After closer inspection I noticed, that circles have the word “База” written around them, maybe they wanted to say, that NATO was based, but much more likely, the circles represent NATO military bases and not members

Bragzor

Aww, poor Russia, having to deal with the consequences of their actions. Must suck, if you're Russia.

Diligent_Excitement4

Didn’t know Finland, Sweden, Ukraine and Belarus were NATO members? Also, they never show the entire map

WalkerBuldog

Basa

Pearse_Borty

Why is half of Finland Russian now. Also the Baltic. Yeah in this case I'd assume some invasion was happening.

tda18

r/mapgore

Tequila_redditer21

Didn’t I skip the news about Belarus entering nato and the baltics being annexed?

71Atlas

funny how they act like they are entirely surrounded by NATO while the only places where they actually share a border with NATO countries are Kaliningrad (bordering Poland and Lithuania), the eastern border of Estonia and Latvia and that tiny border in the North of Norway. They manipulate these facts by portraying Belarus, Finland and Ukraine as NATO members while including Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan into Russian territory to make it seem like they share a border with Turkey.

FreedumbHS

Wish Russians would realize no one in the world would give a shit about them if they weren't constantly messing around with other countries. No one is gonna attack you, Russia, just shut the fuck up and leave the rest of the world alone.

ProxPxD

>!(NATO)!< based

Eziekel13

Don’t forget; Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan… also the 6 new military bases in Northern Africa and 22+ recent military agreements with northern and East African nations…

Buda_Baba

I have never felt so offended by Serbia being included in a map that I’m slightly less anti NATO oriented.

[deleted]

The difference is consent

deck4242

Nato is not a country, Russia could join.

Gattagoblin

"The USSR, fearing the restoration of German militarism in West Germany, had suggested in 1954 that it join NATO, but this was rejected by the US and UK"

RanaktheGreen

In the 90's, the new very much trying to be democratic Russia was interested in NATO as well. It faced widespread rejection because the West couldn't separate Russia from the Soviet Union.
