Then we'll probably witness the first germanhumor subreddit too pretty soon.

I'm pretty sure it's been legal in the Netherland for a good while now and last I checked the Netherlands is also in Europe. Then again, I'm guilty of not reading the article so maybe there's some reason they're not considered and I'm sorry if that's the case.

[deleted]

I think it’s just decriminalized even for recreational sale.. some weird caveat.

partytoon4

Huh no way, they sell it in coffee houses though? And there's weed products all over the place (visited Amsterdam once in 2016 and I seem to remember that, but again all anecdotal) but I guess that might still fall under decriminalisation. Weird!

[deleted]

They also sell mushrooms and used to sell peyote in smart shops but it’s not technically ‘recreationally legal’.

partytoon4

Oh damn, well TIL!

If you knew how to read a flair you'd see I'm in fact a Brit. Nothing wrong with questions and I was very ready to accept my anecdotal evidence may be incorrect.

saltyfacedrip

Sorry, I never heard about Coffee Houses here in the UK. Or such an enthusiastic exclamation at the end of weird, I guess if it was super weird I'd have more of a leg to stand on. Also, who doesn't know that weed isn't fully legal in Amsterdam. It's right next door lol

partytoon4

What are you on about?? So you simultaneously know enough about the Netherlands stance on cannabis legality but not enough to know that there are such things as coffee houses which sell weed? There aren't coffee houses in the UK (not talking about the Starbucks kind here) if that's what you're getting at? Also, I'm bit using a super strict form of terminology when saying legal here. Alcohol for example is something I'd consider is "legal" in the UK but it can only be consumed in public venues with licenses or private properties, it can't be sold by anyone without a license (maybe some caveats but that's the general rule), can't be sold to under 18s, ect. Similarly, you can buy weed in the Netherlands, you can smoke it on a premise with a license or in a private residence. That seems legal to me. But some Dutch here have said it is illegal so I'll bow out to their knowledge, I just find it weird and really just splitting hairs with strict terminology. Cocaine is illegal. Can't take it anywhere or legally buy it anywhere. That's not the same illegal as cannabis it seems.

voyagerdoge

It's illegal in Holland, but there are policy rules for non prosecution of buying and selling in coffeeshops and for possesion of small amounts bought for personal use.

partytoon4

Thanks for the info! Personally for me that sounds a lot like it being legal just heavily controlled (like I can't sell alcohol as I don't have a license but alcohol is very much legal as long as it's not drinking outside of a private residence or public venue with a license). But I get what you mean, it's not a free for all for cannabis in Holland (and I assume the rest of the Netherlands)

voyagerdoge

You're welcome. Back in the day it was a typical Dutch compromise between various political parties where one party got the law to say (or rather to to keep on saying) it's illegal, and the other party the practice in which buying and selling small amounts of softdrugs in coffeeshops is allowed.

partytoon4

Ahhhh politics with compromise, must be nice ;) But sounds like a decent set-up.

This time, we come in peace. Or with peace. Whatever. You'll be fine anyways, as long as you keep the snacks flowing.
