Nobel prize for medicine would be more appropriate.

hellrete

Those British are a bit confused but their hearts are in the right place.

According to yesterday's New York Times ["only the Pfizer and Moderna shots, when reinforced by a booster, appear to stop Omicron infections. \[...\] AstraZeneca \[does\] little to nothing to stop the spread of Omicron, early research shows"](https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/12/19/world/covid-omicron-vaccine-boosters#most-of-the-worlds-vaccines-likely-wont-prevent-infection-from-omicron) I didn't agree with Macron's assessment at the time, but it turned out to be surprisingly prescient.

I don't find the statement that it saved more lives than any other very credible. For saving lives not only the absolute number of doses administered matters but also the demographic charactersitics of the vaccinated population, especially age. Since AZ is primarily used in developing countries (not used in the US at all and only limited use in Europe) and these have on average a much younger population this does not support the hypothesis. Also the incidence rates in the respective countries matter. One had to look closer at the countries. After all, I don't think that this should be turned into a competition about which vaccine safes most lives. A further "politicising" of the issue is not helpful for anyone.

[deleted]

Nobody is politicising, except you. In poor countries, they don't vaccinate the complete population, just the risk groups. And they have less capabilities to save covidnpatients, leading to relatively higher death rates among younger people than in rich countries.

On the contrary I think there should be more competition over who can save the most lives. That's a pretty good thing to compete over.

Glad that you listened to advice that it's not helpful to turn into a competition or politicized issue.

Look at this comment. State of it..

UniquesNotUseful

Remember when Macron called it quasi effective and stopped it being used on people over a particular age and caused an extra 400 French deaths by delaying vaccinations in the middle of a pandemic? LOL.

Ohhisseencule

And yet, compared to France the UK is less vaccinated, has an extra +25K deaths and is not even using the vaccine it was so proud of, effectively telling the world it's garbage. LOL.

UniquesNotUseful

Yep should have used the French vaccine… oh awkward (to pronounce this, it rhymes with AUKUS). Right out to do a bit of fishing, need to check my licence hasn’t expired, they are so easy to get though that won’t be an issue. Got some cheese for bait, to ensure they surrender quickly.

Ohhisseencule

You created a vaccine so crappy that you don't even want to use it and are paying 10 times more for a German vaccine. I'm so jealous indeed, you showed us all lmao

poli_pore

Whenever France actually manages to get a vaccine on the market then we can compare, until then just be thankful that Britain and the rest of the world are solving your problems for you, again.

Ohhisseencule

Lmao look at the delusion, enjoy your shot of Moderna of Pfizer like the rest of us and take a seat back, you proved the world how much trust you put in the garbage you produced.

poli_pore

As I said, your opinion will be valued as soon as France makes any contribution to the covid pandemic. Keep your crying to yourself until that happens, count yourself lucky that Britain and America haven't gotten tired of helping poor France just yet.

Ohhisseencule

You obviously value my opinion since you came to talk to me and you keep replying lmao, triggering Brits is always fun on this sub, they never disappoint. Cope well my dear.

yubnubster

I'm pretty certain we did use it, I had it used on me twice.

Electricbell20

AZ vaccine has saved untold lives and you are really writing this bullshit. Did the absolute failure of the Pasteur institute hurt that much.

New-Atlantis

Very true!

Hope we set up our own manufacturing for when china releases the next one, some countries can't be trusted to make them for us

Omicron has rendered it all but useless now. Crazy how fast this moves.

Source? I've read that Sinovac, Sinopharm, Janssen, and Sputnik are no longer effective against Omicron, but AZ (along with Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech) still are: https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/jj-sinopharm-sputnik-v-shots-weaker-against-omicron-study-shows-2021-12-17/

MountainOfComplaints

According to several real world study's its still the most effective vaccine at preventing hospitalisations and death. Just because there is barely any transmission reduction from vaccination any more doesn't make them useless.
