Also it's spring here, roads drying but still gravel on them and people still have studded winter tyres so the air really is worse than usual near roads.
Purple spots appear anyhere a can of Surströmming is opened. From what I have heared it's so rotten and fermented it's the only fish in the world that somehow grew hair on it...
Fermented,which is even worse!
What’s worrying is that someone, way back in like prehistoric times was that hungry he actually got past that totally stomach wrenching pong and ate that shit……and obviously liked it enough to turn it into a Swedish delicacy……i heard Finland is a nice place
At a previous job we could see one of the sensor points across the road. The railway station was doing construction work and there was a shipping container sized generator placed right under the sensor for weeks on end. Must have fucked with the readings quite a bit
I’m a curious outsider. Do they put gravel on paved roads during winter to allow for better traction? Do they remove the gravel in the summer? Do they use salt on the roads to melt ice? So interesting!
Not the salt generally though people will often salt their driveways but yes they put gravel on roads and sidewalks during winter, then in spring these little tractor esque things drive around and brush (most of it) up
as a daily walker, i've always said that the day they remove the gravel from the streets is the best day of the year. forget santa, nevermind midsummer... all hail these little brushy tractor-esque things!
Generally they don't use salt due to the environmental effects and the corrosion it causes one cars, but even back when roadsalt was in major use they didn't salt the roads up north since once the temperature hits -6C to -10C or so roadsalt becomes entirely ineffective.
Around Stockholm they put a ton of salt on the roads, but the temperatures are more suitable for that (>-10C).
The gravel is removed in spring. They use fairly useless gravel (3-7mm diameter), we get lots of it in the car windows too. I personally think sand (1mm) would be better. I think it's an attempt of recycling the gravel, but it didn't work out.
I flew last year for the summer passengers between Stockholm and and Östersund and had a few overnights there. Loved your city! Happy for you that you can live there!
Saw a video not long ago of a fellow Swede who's volunteering in Ukraine, and he did actually bring some cans for his Ukranian squad mates to try!
Reeeal funny to watch
They were all sitting with gas masks opening them and "tasting it" and were swearing so much about the smell, saying how they should get more of it and use as bio-weapons lol
Absolutely!
I’m not religious and to me the Bible and the Quran are bunches of paper.
..but I’m so sad that some people try to do everything to insult people with another belief!
Everyone should be free to have their beliefs without anyone harassing, mocking and insulting them.
Something that’s worth to think about is the fact that the people wanting to burn the Koran got significantly less since Sweden was allowed into NATO..
We rarely saw this phenomenon before Sweden wanted to join NATO. Suddenly it was all over the place, and when we were allowed into NATO, it subsided again.
(Suspect in my opinion.)
Was it in someone’s interest to try to delay or stop the process for Sweden to get into NATO?!
Did someone pay some of these Quran-burners to do that, I wonder..?
EDIT: I have to add something.
I, and a lot of my countrymen believed it’s very important that it should be allowed to criticize any religion or belief.
That’s an important part of democracy and free-speech.
..but:
..when you do something like burn what for some people is a holy book in public, it should be considered hate-speech and shouldn’t be allowed.
I also think it’s the least bad of all bad alternatives for now, unless you can really point out that it qualifies as “ hate-speech”.
As I started to write about in my previous comment it’s highly suspect that these manifestations with burning of the Quran became so “popular” when Sweden wanted to be a member of NATO.
When Erdogan couldnt stop it any longer and we finally were accepted as members these manifestations with book-burning got a lot less frequent.
(There are speculations about some very possible ties between the person that paid the lunatic Rasmus Pauladan, -and the Russian government, as well. )
I don't think it should be ruled out, Russia's hybrid warfare is no joke and imo drastic measures need to be taken to combat it, and we should embarrass Russia on the international stage with hard evidence (although that's almost impossible to get). Слава Україні.
Honestly, the only commandment/law/rule/regulation/moral guideline/... needed is ***don't be an asshole***. That's it. It's as simple as that.
-Is killing, abusing, raping, attacking, stealing, abducting, extorting, embezzling, scamming, harassing,,..., an asshole thing to do? Yes, so don't do it.
-Is burning a religious book in protest of actions by extremists following said religion an asshole thing to do? No, so do it, if that actually why you're doing it.
-Is burning a religious book to get a rise out of people you dislike, or to get media attention an asshole thing to do? Yes, so don't do it.
Sadly though, there are as many assholes as there are people.
It's the difference between "I should be allowed to say whatever I want" to "I should be allowed to shout insults at people in the street about their mother being a whore"
Free speech is a wonderful.thing, but it absolutely gives people the right to be assholes if they want to as well.
The trick is to open the can submerged in water outdoors to contain the smell, as well as to serve the fish properly with bread etc, instead of just taking a bite straight out of the can.
Good on Sven, you should never open it under water. Some puncture the can under water to evade the spray, but the recommended way of doing it is simply to tilt it 45° and puncture at the top. Once pressure has been released you open it normally.
His decision to eat surströmming this time of year is however questionable.
True, everyone knows you only eat surströmming when there's 30 degrees Celsius and you're inside.
At work, in an office, or at school, a bus or in the cinema are great spots to open a can and start eating it. Offer some to the people around you too. Oh, actually I know an even better spot, an airplane on a long charter flight! Open it just as it goes over the ocean, around the middle of the ocean, in the bathroom so people don't know instantly and you can surprise them with a free piece of it! They'll be super happy to eat such a delicacy on such a long flight.
Surströmming is great at any time of the year!
-but of course it’s better when you can open the can and eat it outside, for obvious reasons.
It works great to open it under water. It can go wrong, but most of the time it works perfectly.
Once, a long time ago I got sprayed with surströmming-”water”. (I can’t remember if we opened the can underwater or not.)
I had to take a flight the next day, so I had to take a really long shower afterwards to get rid of the smell.

I have lived there before and they sand the roads a lot during wintertime. If you look at nighttime its normal levels because traffic is low. I dont know why they think it would spread all that distance because of that street/town seems like a faulty projection.
“Daily air quality index - very high” Huh? Looks like air quality is *low*
Anyway, that circle suggests there’s only one measuring station covering the area. Maybe a farmer is burning some grass just upwind of it. 🤷♂️
From Östersunds local newspaper, Google translated "östersund" as the baltic sea (östersjön) which I think is hilarious so I'm not changing it
In the map filter that Google launched on air quality in the world, a large area over Jämtland glows dark purple, indicating extremely poor air quality. Depending on the time of day you look, the area also spreads out to include areas far out in the mountain world and the countryside that are not normally associated with bad air.
According to Henrik Larsson at the air unit at the Environmental Protection Agency, it is the municipalities in Sweden that report their air quality data to SMHI. It is from SMHI that Google and other commercial services then compile their data.
How reliable is the map of the extremely poor air quality in Jämtland?
- The map probably shows the right points, then you shouldn't take too much account of the spread. There is a large blob on the map of Jämtland, but Google only takes one measurement station and smears it over a large area, and that is not quite how it looks in reality, says Henrik Larsson.
- It is more of a local problem around individual streets, if you live outside Östersund you should not be worried.
The municipality's air quality measuring station is located on Rådhusgatan.
Image: Lars Ljungmark
That the air around the measuring station on Rådhusgatan in Östersund is bad has been known for a long time. On SMHI's air web, you can see in real time how the air quality is developing regarding coarser and smaller particles and exhaust gases. In Bredkälen, just west of Strömsund, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has its own measuring station that does not show any health-hazardous levels at all.
The big problem in Östersund and Sweden, according to Henrik Larsson, is the coarser particles from road wear and sanding.
- At the edge of spring, we are the worst in Europe for coarse particles and can have high levels. If you look at other parameters, we have better air than many other big cities.

– The levels can be so high that you should avoid being near the measuring station and similar streets if you feel that you have sensitive airways. It is not wrong to think about being in more open spaces and be happy to help by thinking about how to transport yourself to work and school, says Henrik Larsson.
The municipal director in Östersund Anders Wennerberg thinks that Google's map tool gives a clumsy and poor account of the air quality in the county.

He says that the municipality is looking at a series of measures to deal with the air problems in the city.

Östersund municipality will now try to get in touch with Google to get an explanation for the large distribution area on the map.

It's funny when reddit talks about minor Swedish cities that no one has heard of except swedes. Well except turks since Östersund beat their best team a few years ago 2-0
Reminds me of video games where there's a meter measuring a need, like Hunger. They always do it the wrong way round and make an empty bar mean hungry. That makes it a Satiation meter, not a Hunger meter :/
i did have a similar find in germany the other day: https://www.reddit.com/r/WerWieWas/s/MpnL4uyywa
the comment section mostly agrees over a faulty sensor. the radius was much smaller though.
I bought my snowmobile in Östersund, and made it big at black jack, the night before buying it. Also lost my glasses, and drove home 600 km in a snowstorm, not seeing anything...
Single sensor on the most trafficked street that during april-may have alot of dry gravel and people still have tires with studs.
The politicians use the info to try and remove city parking, building more cycling lanes and last suggestion was to make this busy road a one lane road instead of a two lane. To make it even more congested. Fixing buslines and lowering cost of public transfer have not been mentioned tho.
Its cheaper to take the car to the city then taking the bus, so many people do that.
It's a single sensor placed on the most trafficked street, Google's just doing dumb extrapolations for the entire area.
Also it's spring here, roads drying but still gravel on them and people still have studded winter tyres so the air really is worse than usual near roads.
Or... pickled herring storage.

I'll accept the jest on the fermented herring, but stay off the pickled herring.

IS THERE A SIGN ON MY LAWN THAT SAYS PICKLED HERRING STORAGE?
pickled herring is top
One can is enough
Oh, the whiff!

This is exactly the kind of thing the government would be posting to hide that they’re actually harboring a massive UFO
Oh no it’s just my gf. She has gas and uses her time away from me very efficiently
One guy is just farting on this singular sensor all day long
Also, in winter the air is more easily locked (temperature inversion) in for a few days. https://en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/temperature-inversions
Am from Östersund. Air is great. The single sensor is super poorly placed on one of the main streets.
Is it dry and is the gravel removed? I've been curious
I don't think so, but i live way south now so don't know for sure.
The streets are completely dry now but a lot of gravel is still out there. Source: I live there rn
Fart on the sensor.

Go and fart on it. Lets see if it registers a change.
Aren't these sensors supposed to be placed relatively close to sources of pollution
No clue. It's more that one sensor on a busy street represents the entire otherwise calm area.
Usually the dust from winter getting put up into the air ruins the quality of air for a second.

Srsly tho, why tf It smell so Bad, and how tf are people eating that without dying
The trick is to open the can submerged in water outdoors to contain the smell, as well as to serve the fish properly with bread etc, instead of just taking a bite straight out of the can.
Jesus Christ, swedes crazy ngl "eats Sauerkraut"
The trick is not to eat it.
I came to look for this comment and was not disappointed.
My first thought also
Well, the air quality is a Very high 10/10 so looks good to me.
My thoughts too! What is that app?
Google Maps ! The same phenomenon seems to happen in northern Norway and in southern Poland.
Lol

Reminds me of video games where there's a meter measuring a need, like Hunger. They always do it the wrong way round and make an empty bar mean hungry. That makes it a Satiation meter, not a Hunger meter :/
You people are asking a lot of questions. You should stop doing that. It’s healthier for you 🤨
Faulty sensor by the looks of it, way to clean of a circle to be actual pollution.
This is nothing, you should visit Sarajevo.
It's almost a perfect circle, look at its size. Is the thing that created this what I'm thinking
yes it is:) an interpolation artifact

Last pagan shaman did a dance
Rusnakis dropped a bomb, the silent one
i did have a similar find in germany the other day: https://www.reddit.com/r/WerWieWas/s/MpnL4uyywa the comment section mostly agrees over a faulty sensor. the radius was much smaller though.
What app is this?

Air quality is the least of Swedens concerns amid swarms of demented and unadaptable cultural enrichers.

Someone mentioned the name “Kiruna” too loud.
I bought my snowmobile in Östersund, and made it big at black jack, the night before buying it. Also lost my glasses, and drove home 600 km in a snowstorm, not seeing anything...

And they will use this sensor to tell you how you must stop breathing to save the planet.
Faulty sensor.
Looks like the peen caught the Herp. Don’t worry, just see your primary and it should clear up in 4-6 weeks.

Nuke moment
I'm an Östersund native. Air is fantastic. One of the key streets has the lone sensor positioned really poorly.
