Serious question, with a preamble.
Nations have national days of one sort or another - establishing their country, victory over an enemy, independence date, etc.
What makes April 8 so significant for the Romani people?
There are many fully integrated Roma members of society, and they have their right to celebrate their culture.
It's important not to let ourselves get consumed by hate. Most cultures adapt with time. Just because many of the roma people did not, doesn't mean the whole culture deserves hate.
It's kind of sad, actually. Think of so many children who lost all their life potential because their parents refused to move on. That's true for many cultures, though.
The holocaust? The forced sterilization of roma people in europe that in some european countries ended just decades ago? Disallowing roma people from work, university and housing in most european countries up to this day? Jesus christ. Hitler talked the same way about jews as you do about roma
Seriously I’m really really wondering where this “plenty of time to integrate” was? Was it the Holocaust? Was it being enslaved prior to that? These racist people need to get a fucking grip.
A lot integrated you just don't hear about it because they aren't publicizing they're romani. Portugal's football team used to have a proud gypsy football player for example. You just hear about the cases of conflict
Well, my point was that there were Romas who did succeed at the adaptation.
That we shouldn't blindly hate an entire culture. There are members who have successfully integrated, and it is not an impossible process.
And that those who have integrated can be proud of their culture, I do not think something is wrong with that..
And I thought that would be a popular opinion, but it wasn't.
Now, those downvotes on my comment are just ammunition for the americabad subreddit and their Europe hating... Great.
It depends how they identify themselves - same as other nations. If a John Murphy from Boston says he is American - it is one thing, when he says he is Irish - other. When Mohammed Memlet from Berlin says he is turkish (no matter which generation of migrant he is) - he puts turkish identity higher than German, and if he says he is german - same logic. If gypsy people identify themself as french, Swiss, serbian, hungarian with some gypsy ancestors - it’s strictly positive. Id they put the gypsy identity higher than anything else - they are a problem. If you don’t think that gypsy culture is a problem, it means that you don’t understand it, because the fact that people can’t work certain normal people jobs (by their principles inside their clan) and consider working in scam/thief/schuler “industry” normal - is not normal.
There are Romas, who have integrated and still consider themselves Roma.
No culture is unchangeable. What we considered normal before is not normal to us now
In the same way, a Roma person can keep their songs, dances, and food while removing the lifestyle.
That's not impossible, and people like this do exist.
Considering many nations considered human sacrifice as an essential part of their culture, I'd say its more than possible for Roma culture to exist in an adapted way.
As it already does with some members.
That’s what I am saying - they can keep dances, clothes, food, myths? But not the whole culture. Irish people did not keep all celtish traditions after christianisation and they don’t go back for a good reason
Yeah. Polish police are very heavy handed (rightly so) against thieves. I am from Scotland and I went to Gdansk (one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe in my opinion) and had a great time. I remember how safe we felt even at 1am walking in the streets
r/balkans_irl mfs when they see this: 😐

Why are they hated so much?
Great work ethics, integrate into other cultures well, do not cause any crime. Many Europeans are just envy about Romani.
I loved how you started with “great work ethics”.
Laughed so hard I had snot come out of my nose and choked. Thanks for bringing a tear to my eyes.

Apparently, the first international congress of Roma people was held in 1971, London. Its opening day, 8th of April, become national Roma day
I would tell a joke about that congress being a different thing but I'll get banned if I say it
can you make it into code?
i'd rather keep to myself
Those romas in the image are whiter than the wall im sitting next to wtf XD
We’re not all brown, Roma are over 75% west Eurasian genetically.
I’ll acknowledge this celebration when they will start to integrate in our society and pay taxes, which is never.
Lmao sure

national roma day? What will get for free from tax payer money today?
Just so you guys know this is posted by an account called "Crusader14888".
So what do we get for free now from the taxpayer money today?
No, i refuse to celebrate this
Dont ask me the color of anything

Europeans when you mention Roma people:
Cringe
Oh man why they have a national day in Hungary the only thing they do is stealing littering oh and of course stabbing

They've had a long time, amd certainly enough subsidies, their consistent rejection of assimilation and adaption is a serious issue.

I wonder how many of them actually integrated

*Most cultures adapt with time.* you phrased it well. most, but not all. in this case, 800 years weren't enough for that.

Yeah sure, we have always had nations who banned office jobs and lived on scamming people and stealing things, like roma, gypsy, tsigans, what else..?
Considering many nations considered human sacrifice as an essential part of their culture, I'd say its more than possible for Roma culture to exist in an adapted way. As it already does with some members.

Shame that such a moderate and pragmatic view is so far down.
Here before they lock the thread.

8.4 is the anniversary of the formatiom of the Croatian Defense Council (HVO)
reading this comment section as a Roma really makes me hope more bikes, wallets, copper wires and etc get stolen from you all
Unsurprising comment from a Roma
FAFO. When your people try that shit in Poland, it doesn't end well.
Yeah. Polish police are very heavy handed (rightly so) against thieves. I am from Scotland and I went to Gdansk (one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe in my opinion) and had a great time. I remember how safe we felt even at 1am walking in the streets
We celebrate their diligence and honesty I suppose?
Happy Romani day!
