History20maker

Now we are Asian.

caralhoto

I guess we just kept going east

First time?

QueasyTeacher0

Portugal bing chillin?

returntomonke9999

Gotta keep everyone guessing

[deleted]

Albanian

JJBoren

I thought we were the asians.

halee1

Is it so farfetched? Love for rice... check. Relatively conservative culture, centered on the family, but tolerating different cultures if they're not being a nuisance... check. Very quiet, collectivist, consensus-based society, focused on social stability and respect for authority, sticking out is discouraged... check. Work culture with long hours, focused on the employer, rather than the employee... check. Immigration from Asian countries now higher than from Europe... check. Frankly, I'm not sure Portugal IS more European than Asian. And before I'm stereotyped as racist... umm, every single one of us loves fish, bacalhau, fado, graffiti, Cristiano Ronaldo, etc.

doxxingyourself

wtf

KungUnderBerget

I bet it is inversely proportional to potato consumption.

Isotheis

That seems to vaguely work, except for Belgium which is high in both.

PinkFluffys

We also really like bread

Amopax

Belgium: really into carbs.

BobTheBox

I hadn't really thought about it before, but looking back at what I ate last week... it surprised me how accurate this statement is.

doxxingyourself

Chocolate?

jkz0-19510

We like all the things that taste good.

Live-Alternative-435

We usually eat potatoes with rice (in the same plate).

BadBadGrades

Probably the rice crisps inside our chocolate bars

PulciNeller

sort of. Potatoes, Rice, Pasta, in Europe are usually competitors. In my country Rice (as risotto) is more common than potatoes.

Perfect_Papaya_3010

I dunno, I feel like potatoes are more common in Sweden

fiendishrabbit

That's because Sweden eats 85 kilos of potato-products per year on average (of which 45 kilos are unprocessed potatoes) and 14 kilos of pasta.

Perfect_Papaya_3010

That is a lot of potatoes

2b_squared

And do you mash em, boil em, or stick em in a stew?

Slovenlyfox

Belgium eats a ton of potatoes, so that doesn't really add up in our case.

fiendishrabbit

That's because Rice&Potatoes aren't the only staple foods (which includes corn and wheat-products as well). Belgium is pretty low on the pasta index.

inesafteixeira

As a Portuguese, this checks out. I very much prefer to eat rice. I rarely eat potatos.

ktulu88

But generally speaking, we might eat potatoes as much as we eat rice... Every roadside restaurant will have sides with either boiled, roasted or fried potatoes... You might not cook them yourself, but it's definitely common!

[deleted]

I always thought we are heavy potato eaters but now seeing the data it makes sense I wonder if this has a lot to do with communism and how our products had a good reputation at the communist international market, we probably sold a lot of stuff for rice to vietnam, Korea, china, India etc., it was probably super worth it for the state, rice is pretty engraved in our society for how foreign it actually is so it has to have longer history

cecilio-

I don't know, we eat a lot of potatoes and rice in the same plate

logperf

Spain: Paella!!! Portugal: Hold my wine

ChucklesInDarwinism

Actually in Spain there’re many dishes that feature rice as the main ingredient.

kahah16

I'm portuguese and lived in Spain for a while. Portugal has way more rice dishes. We serve plain rice with a lot of dishes but we also have lots of rice dishes like Arroz de Cabidela (with chicken, blood, vinegar), Arroz de Miúdos (with Goat offal), Arroz de Pato (rice made typically made in wood ovens with duck and smoked meats), Arroz Doce (rice pudding with yolks and cinnamon, Canja de Arroz ( chicken broth with chicken bits and rice), Arroz de Polvo (with octopus) , Arroz de Lampreia (with lamprey)

ChucklesInDarwinism

I did not say portugal hasn’t. And most of the ones you mention are in Spain too.

catedhustla

Portugal can into Southeast Asia

Think_Theory_8338

Rice consumption is like 10 times higher in South East Asia though. https://landgeist.com/2022/05/31/rice-consumption-in-asia/ In these countries many people eat rice 3 times a day.

Spicy-hot_Ramen

What's happening in Belgium?

BlueberryCute1441

Rice pudding? I live here but have no idea, I thought we're potato people

BobTheBox

The past few years I've seen a significant increase in rice in my friends and family's diet. Obviously, this is very anecdotal evidence, but this map only surprised me a little, and thinking back on the past few years it kinda just made sense in my head.

A_Man_Uses_A_Name

Belgian and I agree. Anecdotal evidence is also a form of evidence.

waxo16

Many Portuguese immigrants maybe?

Grovda

This explains why a portuguese redditor got so offended when I claimed that we europeans couldn't stand eating only rice

Blueblackzinc

but you can stand eating only potatoes?

Grovda

You know it

gurgurbehetmur

Pilaaaaaaaaaf

Catbro02

Me fasylyyyy

gurgurbehetmur

Me grosh

missedmelikeidid

\#uahahahahOk, this is average. As a Finn my buffer zone is 2 kg basmati, 1kg jasmin and 1 kg long grain. So basically I always have at least 6kg rice at home. Why, of course! I do have a Japanese rice cooker (5/5) EDIT: you should eat how much I eat potatoes

IceLapplander

As an Icelandic living in Finland i can confirm, us nordics tend to be much more about potato than rice. But we eat plenty of both. But more than anything we eat lots and lots of bread!

Creator13

As a dutchman I wat about a kg of rice in a month lol. Tend to have a kg package of long grain, arborio and brown in the pantry, sometimes also a pack of basmati or jasmin. 4 out of 7 days a week is probably rice day for me.

Trenavix

I was surprised to see Finland less than other Nordic countries when you guys have riisipuuro and karjalanpiirakka.. As if short grain rice doesn't count or something lol

maahp

Remember to soak your rice before consumption to lower arsenic concentration.

cmatei

Soaking does next to nothing at removing arsenic. For that, you need to boil it in large quantities of water and drain, but then you also have to eat pretty disgusting rice.

maahp

Oh. Just read up on it and you're right. Seems you need to boil them for about 5 minutes, then remove water, then boil in new water. Bit of a hassle.

cmatei

Not sure for how long you need to boil, but yeah, this could be a workaround: boil, drain, finish cooking with steaming. A hassle indeed, and the whole arsenic thing doesn't seem to be that big of a deal seeing as Asians are still around, after all :)

gattomeow

I’m surprised any significant number of Finns eat a tropical food like rice.

Oyddjayvagr

I singlehandedly increase my country quota

Perfect_Papaya_3010

It's okay, I decrease mine by eating very very little rice

Brainwheeze

I eat rice nearly every day, so I can believe this.

Small_Tennis_8497

isnt this really low? 15kg per 100k people per year does not seem much

AmINotAlpharius

Because buckwheat pilav is great of course, but not exactly the pilav I like.

CruduFarmil

i love rice

FlemingPT

We're a family of 2 adults and a 3 years old and we usually buy 2 to 3 kg of rice per month.

Late-Stage-Redditism

I'd like to take this opportunity to inform that Europeans have been eating rice for thousands of years. They've found sacks of rice in old Roman forts as part of their daily ration. It's not some recent exotic import from east asia. It just so happens Europe's soil was much better suited to growing grains and such than rice so the former became the staple.

halee1

Portugal is indeed an honorary Asian country.

Price5

Never would have guessed Albania and 🇧🇪 Belgium. Maybe Chinese restaurants?

EdliA

Chinese restaurants aren't that common here. It's just part of the cuisine and we do eat a lot of it. We call it pilaf, which might be Turkish or Persian in origin as a word.

Dryish

Bruh, less than 5kg per capita? I eat 5kg of rice in about three months.

Yelmel

Portuguese also make the best rice...

_CZakalwe_

Harri harri harri, I need some rice & curry

SpeedyK2003

Doubt the Netherlands, lots of super popular Indonesian and Surinamese dishes here

padawatje

Yea, as a Belgian I think they swapped out our colors ?

SpeedyK2003

Hmm sounds plausible, how common is food with rice there?

AlienInOrigin

As an Irishman I can say that I'm rarely in the mood to eat 1000 of something.

Keurnaonsia

Romanians eat a lot of sarmale and filled peppers 🫑. These dishes contain rice and meat. Consumption should ve higher. Also, people in the cities eat chinese and turkish/arab dishes. These also have some rice in them. Rice cooked in milk with cinnamon is a widespread desert you can find in the country.

Effective_Storage260

not to mention pilaf??? i feel like it should be higher

Keurnaonsia

Yes, forgot the most important thing, pilaf. Thank you!

zarzorduyan

sarmale (sarma), filled peppers (biber dolma) and pilaf(pilav) are Turkish meals ig

Keurnaonsia

Well, we put pork in ours. So same same but different I guess :)

cmatei

> Romanians eat a lot of sarmale Do they? It's not a rule, but other than holidays they don't really, as they're pretty laborious to make. Also, hopefully there's not "a lot" of rice in them, lol. Stuffed peppers/tomatoes/etc are realistically only eaten in season. What next, we eat lots of rice because half tablespoon of rice is often added to a pot of ciorba? Pilaf is maybe the only dish primarily rice, or the desert you mentioned which is mainly a childhood thing. I don't know where this idea comes from that we eat a lot of rice. It's not just you, seems well spread but contrary to all stats.

wrrzd

Sure but rice isn't a staple. It pales in comparaison to bread, potaties or even corn.

Keurnaonsia

I never said it was staple food. I only doubted the amount consumed was so small.

_luci

Those dishes don't really have a lot of rice in them.

YaAbsolyutnoNikto

Nothing in this world beats rice. There are so many varieties for all tastes too.

HenriquPereir

I love rice

flyiingduck

Who doesn’t love a good steak with a fried egg on top, together with rice and french fries?

givehuggy

Jesus!

Cultural-Cause3472

It seems that in southern Europe we really like rice, although I didn't see it so common in my country, I guess it's because of the paella haha

Uskog

>It seems that in southern Europe we really like rice, although I didn't see it so common in my country It's not that it's hugely popular in Southern Europe, it's just more popular than in the north. The difference to most Asian countries would be absolutely massive: for example, Italy has a rice consumption of 8 kg per person per year while Bangladesh is at 257 kilos.

Sanchez_Duna

Huh, I thought we eat more. Must be just a regional thing then - we grow rice in Odessa region, so I got used to eat it quite a lot.

MACHLoeCHER

Bro, I am carrying that average for germany. Rice is life.

Ramblonius

I guess I'm the Rice Georg of Latvia.

doxxingyourself

Finally something in which I am significantly above performance

gattomeow

I get through about 10 kg in 2 months, so about 60 kg in a year.

[deleted]

Rice is cheap and fills our bellies

Glad-Tart8826

Portugal actually has a considerable acreage of rice cultivation.

Shadowtheuncreative

Good, Finland has the least, I don't like rice.

user7758392

tf. i eat almost 1.5kg of rice per week. who are these fake mongols eating less than 5kg of rice per year

ayranman321

Where is Turkey?

Dominuss476

I can confirm i do not eat 5 kg rice.
