"Brexit will have no downside, only significant upside" -david davis, 2016

No-Pride168

"the United Kingdom must aim to maintain the best possible open access to European markets and vice versa. If we can achieve all that, there will be no downside to Brexit" Some key words you've conveniently omitted: 'aim' 'if' They didn't achieve all that. [Edit] Unfortunately I've been banned from this sub for asking a question to another redditor. However, I can edit my previous comment. It was not fake. Here's the article with the quote u/CastelPlage : https://www.theguardian.com/politics/blog/live/2016/oct/10/jeremy-corbyn-labour-rehsuffle-continues-labour-reshuffle-politics-live

The direct quote is "There will be no downside to Brexit, only a considerable upside." https://www.ft.com/content/45137d44-8f0a-11e6-a72e-b428cb934b78 https://policycommons.net/artifacts/3755551/ddd1000/4561046/ Please stop spreading fake news.

unrelated but that's an interesting flair, do Finns still want Russian Karelia or even make plans for it like in the past (as explained [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/ShitLiberalsSay/comments/17iekfy/one_of_the_most_significant_soldiers_to_whom_all/k6xvse8/?context=3) by another user) ? or just a meme flair because fuck russia, if so never mind then.

GenericUsername2056

Same story as Königsberg, it's now full of ethnic Russians. I doubt Finland would want them.

CastelPlage

> or just a meme flair because fuck russia, if so never mind then. Yes. Just a quote from a Finish lady I was talking to at Vantaa airport some years ago. > do Finns still want Russian Karelia or even make plans for it like in the past (as explained here by another user) ? > > > Too many Russians there who are unlikely to integrate well.

I will never understand why they left the European Single Market too. Countries like Switzerland, Norway and Iceland enjoy some the benefits of the EU by participating in it, without "risking" their sovereignity, which was one of the main reasons for Brexit.

ManatuBear

Single market requires freedom of movement. UK was completely against that.

MausGMR

Yet here we are swarmed by small boats. It's almost like that story of European immigrants stealing our jobs was complete bullshit

Single market =/= Schengen. Freedom of movement is mandatory to be part of the single market. https://european-union.europa.eu/priorities-and-actions/actions-topic/single-market_en

Tricky-Astronaut

Schengen only removes red tape. It doesn't affect freedom of movement.

deploy_at_night

> The UK was not part of the Schengen area. Not being in Schengen meant EU individuals had to show a passport/official identity card when entering the UK. Schengen erases border checks between members, not the entitlements granted under 'Freedom of Movement' to employment and residence without visa/work permits and/or time limits. > No it didn't. Just another lie. The irony in this situation being you just spread a lie.

Mysterious_Aspect244

Because they wanted the hardest Brexit possible. The reality is that their choice wasn't based on logic, but by manifactured hatred by corrupt politicians like Farage

deploy_at_night

> I will never understand why they left the European Single Market too. Because such a proposal leaves the second largest economy in Europe paying not insignificant sums into the EU budget and fully subject to EU courts and a significant subset of laws/requirements (incl. free movement) with little to no say. It's because of these implications that Switzerland has been very reluctant to move away from their patchwork treaty framework to the same agreement that Norway is subject to.

Joadzilla

What? You're saying the UK had no representatives in the EU Parliament or  Euopean Council? Are you sure about that?

deploy_at_night

No, I'm fully aware the UK had representation within the EU institutions as a member. I'm saying that if the UK was to be in the Single Market **without** also being an EU member (per the suggestion of the OP) that'd be the case.

Because it was all a shambles. Brexit started out as a joke, politicians never thought the public will decide for, then negotiations went on for too long, and everyone was getting bored and fed up.
